Buying a new computer, what to get?

(Warning: Long post ahead; I'm quite thorough =p )
I've been around town; Best Buy, Staples, C. City, Dell etc. looking for a new computer. My current computer is only 2 years old and it's already atrociously obsolete (only 448 megs RAM), and rather than upgrading I decided to just buy a new one.
Well, the problem is that at all the places I go, their definition of a "gaming" computer is some monster powerhouse that can play games and end world hunger all at once; usually costing well over 1000 dollars. I'm 16, I don't have $1.5k to spend on a computer. My budget is <$600.
Another problem is the stock video cards. They're almost always "NVIDIA 6150" cards... my current computer already has one of those, and I'd like something better (preferably something that Spore supports, since that's my goal), unless it can do more than I'm giving it credit for.
So, here's what I would like at the lowest possible price.
-A moderate gaming computer; does not need to be able to play Xbox 360/Wii/PS3 graphic games (eg: Call of Duty, Fallout 3, etc.). Should be able to play other games well, however (eg: Spore, World of Warcraft, etc.). I would assume a good Nvidia card above 6150 (not 7100 though) will fit this purpose okay. Games don't have to be played on the absolute highest resolution, etc. but the lagging/skipping/stalling of my current computer makes them unplayable, and I don't want that to happen.
-4 gigs RAM, as that seems to be most common. 3gigs will do, though.
-Any size HD, but 300gig+ preferred
-Processor can be Duo or Quad, but power should be 2.4ghz+ (total). AMD or Intel preferred, but whatever I can get will do.
The rest, I really don't care about. I've got all the accessories (keyboard, mouse, monitor, speaker, etc.) so bundles aren't needed.
I'm not up for building my own computer as I don't have the time, skill, or resources to do so. In regards to the video card, all the stock computers I've found have the following:
-Nvidia 6150
-Nvidia 7100
-Intel GMA 3100
-Radeon 3450 (rare, and usually expensive)
If need be, I suppose I can buy my own card, but I have no idea how to install it or even if I COULD. (I've heard some cards are integrated so you can't just swap them)
So really, what I'm asking is for recommendations; either specific products or places where I could get something like this. Or if any of the computers I've found would do what I want anyways, and I'm just not understanding the power they have (I've never done anything on a computer with more than 1gig RAM). So if any of the "stock" computers that fit the above description will do what I want, that's excellent. I'm just not sure if I'll need to be customizing stuff.
Thanks in advance.

Hey!
Don't think of this of being rude.. But there is a really nice gaming computer that came out a couple of weeks ago. Its the New Gateway FX. It runs about $1,299.99 I believe. Now don't let that scare you away. This comes with a HD Radion 4850 in it. A really nice Graphics card. Not only that it has the NEW Intel i7 Quad Core, that runs at 2.6 Ghz. I have done many Services on the FX, and its a fast computer, and the thing is it can go even faster. It holds a 3gb of ram, With a 750 GB Hdd? And 2 HDD spots in the front. For even more space! Also has a couple of other neat features, but I think you got the point.
If I had the money this is the computer that I would buy. Also with your budget, Best Buy is having the 18 Months finance with 0% interest rates. I would do that but I have to be 18 for a credit card >.>. Hope this helps =]

  • Now that my Mac OSX v10.5 is not supported by Firefox, and I'm not ready to buy a new computer, what are my options?

I'm wondering if I can, or should, upgrade to 10.8 Mountain Lion?????  Or, should I switch to Safari?  There is not much stored on my computer except for usually about 500 pictures.

Upgrade Paths to Snow Leopard, Lion, and/or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard — Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service — this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion — System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
                 Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
    Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table — RoaringApps.

    I am a bit of a computer/Internet/iTunes dummy....
I am concerned about the health of my current computer but have not yet made the commitment to a new one, but:
    1) How can I transfer my iTunes account to a new computer when I get one...
    and
    2) What can I do if my current computer suddenly implodes and I have not yet 'copied/'saved'/otherwise protected my account, as is? -- I have already had my computer crash once and had one of your people help me restore all of the paid for songs (none of the uploaded from my own collection of CD songs, of course, so I had to spend a long time rebuilding that) -- and I believe I was told you could only help me recover that material one or two times altogether, no?
WithOUT purchasing a Mach or iCloud (I actually think I have one of the later, but rarely have checked it) account, is there anything I can do to responsibly protect my account?
Thanks for any time taken on this!!!

These are two possible approaches that will normally work to move an existing library to a new computer.
    Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
    Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entire iTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase and reload.
I'd recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library.
Note if you have iOS devices and haven't moved your contacts and calendar items across then you should create one dummy entry of each in your new profile and iTunes should  merge the existing data from the device.
If your media folder has been split out from the main iTunes folder you may need to do some preparatory work to make it easier to move. See make a split library portable.
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library or a backup then then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for advice on how to set up your devices with a new library with the maximum preservation of data.

I received LR 5 for Christmas but have not downloaded it yet on my computer. I have had LR 3 for about 4 years.  I am due to buy a new computer soon but need to know how many licenses/downloads I will get before downloading LR 5 on my current computer.  I may also purchase a laptop in the next year so that would require 3 licenses altogether (current iMac, future iMac, future macbook).

    You have one license.
You can download and install it on an infinite number of computers, as long as it is only installed on two of your computers at any one time, and in use on only one computer at any given time.
So in your case, current iMac, that's would mean its installed on one computer, no problem. Future iMac and future MacBook ... so if you uninstall from current iMac and install on Future iMac and future MacBook, it's now installed on two computers at a time, no problem, as long as you're not using Lightroom on both simultaneously. And if after that, you got two new computers and uninstalled Lightroom from the previous two, you're still good, it's only installed on two computers at any one time.

After much consideration, today I decided to join Adobe Photoshop CC only to discover it is not available to me as my laptop has Windows Vista.  What are my options other than having to buy a new computer or an old version like Ps5 or 6?

1-Do some more reading about a Windows "upgrade version" which, according to my experience, does NOT require you to format your drive... it upgrades over what you have, without disturbing installed programs... at least that is what happened the ONE time I installed an upgrade version, so I can't give a 100% assurance it will work that way with your computer... search link for all things Microsoft http://search.microsoft.com/search.aspx?mkt=en-US&setlang=en-US
2-Depending on the hardware you have, you may not be able to run CC programs well, if at all
3-CS6 is 3+ years old and is the ONLY non-CC version still being sold... unless you can find a "legal" CS5 somewhere

  • Can i get a newer version without buying a new computer?

Hello All and Anyone, I have an imac OS X version 10.6.8 and was wondering if it was possible to upgrade the version at all or if I have to buy a newer computer. I'd hate to think I'm "stuck" with this one, as there are plenty of apps I can't even download because this computer is 4 years old. There's still tons of space on it though & I don't otherwise have a need for a new computer. Thanks in advance.

Back up your data, check your applications for compatibility, and download Mavericks from the Mac App Store.

    anim8,
I do like the K8N-Sli Plat.
    Take Care,
    Richard
    Thanks alot for reply
What i fear with K8N-Sli Plat is that its older than K8N-Sli-F, and maybe more faulty. I dont know, but if K8N-Sli-F is newer, MSI has maybe corrected some problems.. i dont know :/
What is the most popular card atm? I really want a card that i can get support on, and thats why i dont like Sli-K8N-F much, because its new, and new cards often got new problems too.
I looked a lot at Neo-4 Plat too, but just before i should buy i saw that almost all hardware-stores in Denmark where i live, is out of stock, and they will not get them again because MSI has stopped to produce them. I dont know if this is coerrect, but if no hardware-stores in Denmark will get the card at store again, their must be a problem right?

  • Had to buy a new computer and not able to download my ITunes purchases

I had to buy a new computer and I am not able to download my old purchases. I didnt back up my purchases on my old laptop. What can I do to download my old purchases? Thank you

+I didnt back up my purchases on my old laptop.+
Woops, big mistake not backing up, since you only get ONE download from the store; no more downloads will be coming to your new PC.
Do you at least have your purchases on an ipod? You could authroize the new PC, then do itunes menu > file > transfer purchases from ipod.

  • Why would I have to buy a new computer to sync my new iPhone 4?

If I had a PC, I probably wouldn't have this problem. First of all, I have a Mac 466MHz PowerPC G4 that runs OS 10.4.11 (Tiger). It works just fine. I cannot upgrade to (Leopard), because my MHz is not over 600MHz or something. I cannot upgrade to (Snow Leopard) because my computer does not have an Intel processor in my computer. I bought a "PHONE", just a phone. No other phone would be giving me this problem. I shouldn't have to buy a new computer just to sync my phone to the computer to get all my music. I am probably going to a have to return my phone, because what's the point? I don't have another computer to export my iTunes library to. Does anyone else have this problem? HELP!

The PowerPC 466MHz G4 was discontinued on the 18th July 2001, according to some light research on the inter web, that's over 9 years ago, while I understand your frustration, you must have come up against some other issues with new technology not being compatible or useable with your current system, USB 2.0, PCIe, DDR, DDR2 or DDR3 RAM, SATA hard drives to name but a few.
I'm not having a dig here, but as others have said, the requirements for using the iPhone have been readily available for each release of the iPhone. If you chose not to check those prior to purchasing the iPhone, that is your responsibility, not Apple's.
Personally, I would be writing a thread praising Apple for making a machine over 9 years ago which is still running well for you today, instead of having a go about current technology not being compatible with what can only be described, from a technological standpoint, as a fossil.
If you had a PC, especially of the same age, it would probably sitting there not working at all. Hardware in PCs is generally outdated faster than on Macs.
As for "if you bought a phone, just a phone" you wouldn't be able to sync that to any device. Just a phone plugs into a wall mounted telephone socket. As for syncing non Apple Mobile phones with Mac OS X, the reason I bought the original iPhone and every iPhone upgrade since, is because it was the first mobile phone that could sync to a Mac efficiently and accurately.
If you think you'll be better off with a PC and just a phone, enjoy your shopping experience, oh and remember to pick up some Anti-virus software while you're there, you'll definitely need it. (You'll need iLife replacement programs too while you're at it. Oh yeah and PC variants of any third party software you currently use on your Mac).
