Buying a new MBP Retina, is the top end Haswell i7 worth the extra $200?

Spec'ing out a brand new 15" MBP… I'm upgrading from my 2008 Core 2 Duo model with 6GB RAM. The question is, specifically:
As a graphic designer who uses Adobe Creative Cloud pretty extensively (Indesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects), will the extra $200 for any extra 300mhz of processor be worth the added cost?
Already the machine is pretty beefy, just wondering what the community thinks.
Hollah.

not in my opinion.

  • Update impossible on the new MBP Retina?

Hi! I got my new MBP Retina two weeks ago and since then I tried to update it several times, but there's always an error message saying "the package is broken" or something like this when I reboot it.
I mean it does try to install it when rebooting but it fails everytime.I tried to download every package from Apple website separately and install them apart with the same failure everytime. I'm wondering where the error is!!
I consider restore my session but if you happen to know anything before I do that it would be awesome and perhaps save me a great amont of time! Thanks a lot!
    Configuration details :
    Processor : 2.6 GHz intel Core i7
    Memory : 16Go 1600 MHz DDR3
    HD : 512 Go SSD

    What are you updating please?

  • When should I buy a new MBP?

I'm leaving for college in the fall and I would like some help deciding when it makes sense to buy a new computer.  I'm planning on buying a new MBP with Retina display, but I'm not sure if it's totally worth updating yet.  I currently have a Late (October) 2009 White Macbook (2.26Ghz, 8GB RAM, 250GB HD), that works decently, but isn't wonderful--it's slowing down.  I would appreciate some ideas and thoughts on when it makes sense to upgrade:  now, before I leave for college; sometime during the fall semester, after I really know my computing needs (my least preferred option); or, this Christmastime?  If anyone has some advice, it would be much appreciated.
    Cheers!

Wouldn't it just make sense to put the money for the 7200rpm drive towards one more upgrade on the MBP?  I could just cut that up front cost.
You can choose to forgo the hard drive upgrade, however 250GB is quite small, meaning your likely using a great portion of the second 50% of the drive, which the read/wrire performance is substancially reduced.
7,200 RPM doesn't make that much of a battery life dent that one will notice it, but one will notice the speedier response.
S0 by incrreasing the RPM's and the storage size, plus newer drive with better read/write speeds through technology improvments combined with a zero erase + fresh install of 10.6.1 (your original disks) and Software Updated to 10.6.8 (10.7 is slow) should make a dramatic improvement on that model.
However a erase + fresh install of 10.6 on that present 250GB can do the job well too, 10.7 is slow and you likely have other problems the 10.6 install will also cure.
How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6
How to revert your Mac to Snow Leopard
I'm not sure where I can get a copy of 10.6.8.  Do you know where I could obtain that?
Your computer came with 10.6.1 install disks, hold c or option key down and boot off the disks, use Disk Utility to erase the entire drive (select the drive makers name and size on the left) with Security Option > Zero all data, wait, then when finished quit and install 10.6.1 and Software Update fully to 10.6.8.
If you no longer have the 10.6.1 disks, call Apple for a machine specific replacement disks for your 2009 Late 13" White MacBook.
You can also use the $29 10.6.3 white Snow Leopard retail disks sold here

f it turns out that I do need Windows for class applications, do I install it on a partition by using disk utility and partitioning my HD (also, how big does that partition for windows need to be)?
There are two methods to use Windows on a Mac.
1: Apple's Bootcamp, which takes the bottom free space on your boot drive (250GB isn't much if you have a lot of OSX data) and allows you to direct install Windows 7 (only) there.
2: Virtual machine software, which allows one to run Windows (any flavor and Linux's) in a window in OS X.
You can read about both (pro's and cons) here:

  • Brand new MBP Retina constant kernal panics

I have a new MBP Retina with Mavericks 10.9.4 installed. I have received constant kernal panics since a few days into it. It seemed as though they were being cause by the io/logic boards, but those have both been replaced now. OS has been reinstalled multiple times to no avail. BSD and kernals blamed are all over the place (Dock, WindowsServer, mds; filesystems, AppleSMBusController, IOAcceleratorFamily)
The latest kernal panic is as follows:

I've got many more where that came from. I just don't want to post a wall of text.

    An update on my situation.
I had my macbook pro replaced with a brand new one by Apple, which was brilliant customer service.
Before giving back the old macbook, I decided to copy all my essential documents over to a usb stick. I also formatted my time machine external drive so it was blank.
Rather than restore this new macbook using my time machine backup, I set it up as a new machine and copied just my documents from my usb stick. I then proceeded to carry out fresh installs of software I regularly use but nothing non-essential (namely Spotify, Firefox, Chrome, xCode, Adobe CS5, Squidman, MAMP and Office 2011).
For three days everything worked beautifully - until last night when I had my first kernel panic on this machine. Nothing was running apart from firefox when this panic occured. The report is below and states the process which was running was 'plugin-container' which is part of firefox.
    Below is the log output:

I'm running the latest OS X Mavericks - all updated to date.
I've tested the thunderbolt display with a friends MacBook Air and I see no problems there.
Any clues what is going on? Or it this latest Kernel Panic just a coincidence compared to my previous macbook?
    Thanks in advance!

  • Can i change my iPad 3 for new iPad retina in the apple store?

Can i change my iPad 3 to new iPad retina in the apple store by paying few money?

I have a similar issue...my uncle asked what I wanted as a present and I said a new ipad came out with support for Australian 4G networks and to get that...it's the 'new' ipad. Of course he went into the store and asked for the latest 'new' ipad on 28/10 and they sold him an ipad3 which retailed for the same price as an ipad4.
So when I got it I was advised by the telco that my version was not compatible. I called applecare to ask them if I could swap it being 1 week out from purchase and of course they said go back to the store it was purchased from. No surprises the store doesn't want anything to do with it, they just want to get rid of their old stock.
Now I am stuck with an ipad which I did not want (I specifically did not want the ipad3 because it did not support our local networks' 4G) and Apple have washed their hands of it.
This is terrible policy...at first I was upset Apple or the reseller won't exchange it but really I don't blame the reseller now...my grief is in the stupid Apple naming policy..."oh it's the new ipad with retina display now" .... hang on a second the ipad3 was also the 'new' ipad with retina display (maybe not by name) and was never referred to as the ipad 3rd gen...now they're saying oh it's now the ipad3 you want the ipad with retina display...guess what your stupid naming convention means half the noobs out there don't know what they're buying.
The identical naming convention has caused my uncle to purchase an obsolete product for top dollar...I have an iphone 3g, 4, 4s, touch, etc. well I think it's safe to say android is the future. I'm already finding streaming media is made impossible by Apple's DRM and policies...something my $100 andoid tablet can do easy.

  • My MBP display is not working.  Need to move data to new MBP Retina.

    Hello.
My 3 yr old MBP display failed (display just showing vertical and horizontal lines).
I bought a new MBP Retina today.
Genius Bar told me to simply attach FireWire, then press "T" on old MBP to boot in Target Mode.
Then, look for old MBP HD icon on new MBP Retina desktop.
I cannot find old MBP icon on desktop.
I cannot transfer data from old MBP to new MBP Retina.
    Any help would be appreciated?
    Ken

Genius bar told you right - you need to start your old MBP up into target mode (booting while hold down the T key) but you need to have the right FireWire cable hooked up to the machines before you boot either. What year is your old model? Does it hve FW400 or FW800?
Here are the instructions from Apple - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661. Take a look at it and see if it helps. Also make sure that you have the Finder set so that external and remote disks will show up on your Desktop. When the disk mounts you can either just copy over files or, if you want to transfer accounts and associated directories, use Migration Assistant in your Utilities folder to copy over the info.
Good luck - call back if it's not working.

  • Moving iDVD from old MBP to new MBP retina.

My old MBP (with internal super drive) is running 10.7.5 and has iDVD on it.  Obviously the new MBP Retina does comes with 10.8.2 and does not have iDVD.  Is there a way I can get iDVD off the old machine and install it on the new one?  (I have the external Apple Super Drive and need to burn some DVDs)
    Thanks!
    Trey

I think you can copy iDVD from the /Applications folder on your old Mac to your new Mac's /Application folder. If that doesn't work, you can use your SuperDrive and install iDVD from your iLife DVD.

  • Brand New MBP Retina dropped onto concrete... What would you do?

Feeling like a complete moron right now.
A week ago, I was really pleased to receive my new upgraded Macbook Pro Retina, and had it delivered with a hardcase.
Having found a great padded crumpler bag online, I ordered it and expected it early next week, but in the mean time I've been going to an from work with it in the hardcase, in my backpack.
Today, in possibly the most unfortunate circumstances, the strap on my backpack snapped (new backpack) and my new MBP slammed into the fresh car park floor. The concreate cut through the corner of the bag, and just so typically, into the only corner of the mac the hardcase doesn't provide complete protection. (if only I have put the mac in the backpack the other way round..)
The damage cosmetically, really isn't dreadful, although I'm seriously ****** at myself & the seemingly stupid circumstances. I'm also really worried that I may have internally damaged this £2500 beauty as the fall was from quite some height and the impact seemed so forceful.
I have insurance that covers my all my kit, (cameraman) including my macbook, as well as 3 years applecare.
If anyone is able to offer me any advice on what they would do in this situation I would be really grateful.
    Idiotic feeling fool, signing out.

Report it to your insurance company.  Apple Care does not cover accidental damages.

  • New MBP Retina Trackpad "jumps", doesn't select...

Has anyone had an issue with the trackpad in the (NEW) MBP (Retina or otherwise)?  There are times when I "Tap" to move the cursor or select something new and it won't do it correctly, or it will jump off the point (or link, or whatever) that I'm trying to select.  Occassionally, it takes a couple tries to get it to operate correctly.
I have tried changing the preferences--going both directions in sensitivity, but nothing seems to help (and that's about the only control we have now in the new OS).  I prefer my setting to "Tap", rather than "click".  If I wanted to make the click, it appears it wouldn't be an issue... I am just trying to keep it like I've had my previous MBP (mid-2009).  Both MBPs have Mountain Lion installed, and the mid-2009 seems to work flawlessly with the "Tap" selected.  Have already visited the Genius Bar twice--they have no solution.
    Any input greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I have the same EXACT problem.  It doesn't do it all the time, and sometimes can go almost a minute without noticing it, and the it might do it 5 times in a row.  I finally called Apple and we went through some resetting and such.  It didn't do anything, and he asked me to create a new test user account and see if it happened there, which it did.  He said since I was within the 14 day window, to exchange it and said he set it up in the computer and gave me a number.  I guess I will go to the Apple Store on 14th St. tomorrow and exchange it?  I dunno, I feel stupid exchanging it for such a minor (but definitely annoying) problem.  I imagine a software update could fix it.  I really doubt it's hardware (but the tech seams to think it is).  Regardless, I shouldn't have to deal with this issue for such an expensive laptop

  • Right time to buy a new MBP?

I am looking to buy a new MBP, but I was wondering if the time is right? Are they about to release a new model or should I go ahead and buy one now?

Only Apple knows when new models will be introduced and they only will tell on the day of release.  If the current crop of models fulfill your needs, purchase one.  If not, you are welcome to wait but you will not know for how long.
    Ciao.

  • Where to buy a new MBP?

looking to buy my first macbook pro (and first apple actually!) and am really excited - but i'd love some advice from more seasoned users.
when i buy the machine, i definitely plan to purchase applecare. there is a local apple dealer that sells MBPs with _another_ service plan that can piggyback on to applecare. before i lay out the details of said plan below, what i'd like to know is basically whether this is necessary and/or worth the $99 this plan costs.
here's what this piggyback plan would give me:
    MacTraining
Get free access to our introductory training classes: Intro toMac, Intro to iLife and Intro to iWork.
    4thYear Warranty
We will cover the cost of labor (but not parts) for repairs for a fourth year, if you purchase a Mac and AppleCare from us.
    FreeLoaner Laptop
Bring your computer in for repair to us and we’ll loan you a MacBook to tide you over.
    HomeSetup
We’ll set up your computer, Airport network or Time Capsule at your homeat discounted rates.
    MacSetup
We’ll install your software and transfer files onto your new Mac.
    PriorityRepair Service
Get automatically moved to the front of the line for in-house repairs.
    MacAssessment & Tune Up
Get your computer optimized and cleaned up—inside & out—eachyear.
    10%Off Ink & Paper
Save an additional 10 percent off the manufacturer’s suggested price onink jet printer supplies.
    10%Off any Used Mac
Get an additional 10 percent off any of our pre-owned Macs.
what looks potentially the most attractive to me is the 4th year warranty and the free loaner laptop in case of repairs (as i have no other backup computer at home, should the new one fail). i also appreciate the mac assessment and tune-up, though i wonder whether that is actually necessary for the maintenance/performance of the machine (?).
so my main question: should i buy my new MBP and applecare at a regular apple store or other retailer (best buy, etc.) - or should i go to this specific apple dealer in order to spring for this piggyback plan as well?
any thoughts and/or advice is most welcome...thanks in advance!!

The plan is only as good as the company backing it.  If you've done your due-diligence on the company then I'd say it's a pretty good deal.  You can compare how much they would sell the system for vs Apple or Best Buy etc.
If they aren't asking a premium, I'd say go for  it.
    Regards,
    Captfred

  • New MBP-Retina (Indexing Question)

    Hello.
I just bought a new MacBook Pro - Retina yesterday.
I am having difficulty transferring files from old MBP using Migration Assistant.
The old MBP display screen has failed, so I am unable to see screen promots / menus to go through the normal Migration Assistant process.
Instead, I am just hoping that the Transfer is occuring.
It appears that new MBP-Retina is (and has ben) INDEXING overnight.
Can anyone explain if INDEXING indicates that I have indeed started the file transfer from old MBP to new MBP-Retina?
Any ideas on how to start and/or confirm Transfer of data?
    Thanks!

  • Screen capture on my new MBP Retina 15"

When I do a screen capture on my new MBP Retina 15" and paste it into Outlook or any other program it looks huge and distorted, how do I fix this?
I'm assuming it's because I am capturing the image in Retina 2880x1400 and then trying to paste that image into a non Retina enabled 3rd party program so it scales the image down which causes it to blow up the img and distort/pixelate.
I'm assuming there is a simple common sense fix for this which  Iam obviously unaware of...?

False alarm, took memory stick back to store and fault is same on shops mbp-r.  They swapped it for a new one and now everything is fine.  Sorry apple, how could I have doubted you!!

  • Sad day today - New MBP retina 15" and no scanner and no CS6

    Walking back from happiness!
The first two week I was very amused with my new MBP retina 15" - I'm changing from Windows XP professional.
But now it looks like that I have to install bootcamp on the mac to run Windows 7 with my CS5 for PC.
Has anyone experience with installing bootcamp on mavericks.
Is it complicated, I'm a little afraid to destroy something?
    Greetings

Well, my English is not so good so that my writing was missunderstandable.
I know that software for windows don't run on a mac.
So yesterday i bought a CS6 for mac... Tragedy...
    Anyway ...
    But now: Bootcamp
I read the manual, but I'm not sure if I understood it right...
First I load the drivers for windows from apple and save them on a stick?
Then I make a partition in the Festplattendienstprogramm?
Then I set in the DVD from Windows in the DVD-Player and start the installation?
After restart of Windows i start the drivers from the USB?
Please be so kind and correct me if I'm wrong.

There is no way around the activation lock. You apparently decided to use the phone with someone else's ID set up for an iCloud (and find my iPhone) account before updating. Since Find My iPhone was active, updating to iOS 7 has automatically turned on the activation lock. If you do not have the Apple ID and password that were previously used, then the phone is now useless. You can't activate it without that informaion.
Talk to whoever you bought the phone from if you can. If you can't, buy a new phone.
