Buying a new Symbian powered mobile

Now with symbian officially dead, is buying a Symbian running mobile a good idea?
Solved!
Go to Solution.

The only reson for buying a symbian handset now would be if photography on your phone was your biggest priority
The 808 is still by far the best camera ever mounted on a mobile device, with the N8 running a notable 2nd and the rest pretty much of a muchness (tho the 920 isn't so bad if you can live with the LED flash), it will be interesting to see what the SGS4 camera brings
Howeverwhilst symbain is still being supported, new apps will be few and far between and other devices offer faster, slicker interfaces, better browsing experiences etc

    What to Bring with You
Your old mobile phone, if you’re replacing it.
Social Security number of the account holder.
    Valid government-issued photo ID.
Carrier account password, if you have one.
    Your Apple ID and password.

According to Apple's list (link above) you will probably want to pick up a Sprint or US Cellular model. HOWEVER, as I mentioned above I know that the Verizon iPhones come unlocked from the factory (assuming it will be the same for iPhone 6 and 6+). I DO NOT KNOW if the Sprint and US Cellular models come unlocked. But I am sure some quick internet research will lead you to the answer.
I think your goal would be to get a Sprint or US Cellular version. Also I believe a law was just recently passed that allows someone to have a phone unlocked by the carrier no questions asked. So even if the Sprint and US Cellular iPhones are locked you can have them unlocked.

  • Hi I want to buy a new sony mobile...

Hi I want to buy a new sony mobile but the feature I m looking for  is that " I do not receive a call from number not in my phonebook"
what all model of sony mobile has this feature in which I do not recieve a call from number not in my phonebook

There is a feature in our Xperia Android devices that let's you send call directly to voicemail. This means the phone will not ring or disturb you, however they will be given an option to leave a voice message.
I know it isn't EXACTLY what you are looking for, however I agree with Slim that I don't think any phones have exactly what you are asking for.
I've worked with the company 8 years, but I can't remember a product that did this. I'll ask around, but can't promise.

  • Looking to buy a new Nokia - advice needed!

I have seem similar threads from people interested in buying a new Nokia, normally I would just add to those threads instead of starting yet another but I thought this would be best as my desired specifications are different from those I have come across.
Like other people I have looked on various review sites but these have just made matters more difficult due to mixed responses.
I currently have a sony ericsson w580i and have had numerous problems since I bought it. Mainly it is not very durable which is one of the reasons I have decided to look at Nokias - I have had two Nokias in the past, both of which survived being dropped a few times ending up with only a few scratches - no cracked buttons like my w580i.
I am not looking for a phone with an amazing camera - I have my own camera for that - and I'm not overly fussed about having decent music player capabilities as I have an ipod. I have used these features a little with my w580i but not enough to justify choosing a phone based on these.
I like storing my texts as I have a lot that I need to refer back to at later dates, and I send texts a lot more often than I make calls, so a phone with decent text storage is the main thing I am looking for. I do receive a few calls though so a phone that provides clear sound when in a call would be preferable.
I have been looking at the 5310 model but the more negative reviews are due to the phone, particularly the screen, cracking very easily when dropped and the lack of clear sound when in calls. I realise it is a music phone but is available on Tesco mobile which is what I am looking to move to.
It is also in my budget of less than £70 (I may pay more depending on the phone but I will not go above £100)
Any recommendations for other models would be greatly appreciated, whatever network they are available on.
    Thanks in advance

Hmm. If you want something that can store a lot of text messages, you're going to want to look at a phone that runs Symbian S60 because they allow storage of messages on a memory card inserted into the phone while older S40 phones do not. And you're not going to find (m)any S60 phones under the £100 mark. About the cheapest one I can think of is the 6120 classic and that's going at about £160.
Now, if you are willing to store less messages in the phone and transfer them to your PC from time to time, you could get by with an S40 phone such as the 2760 (clamshell, £68) or 2600 classic (candybar, £79).

If officially unlocked, you can purchase a sim from one of the two nationwide GSM carriers, AT&T or T-Mobile. However, AFAIK, none of the carriers in India offer unlocking for the iPhone. Thus, if your phone is carrier locked, the only way it will work in the US is roaming...that would cost a fortune.
So, if you have a carrier locked iPhone, leave it home or sell it before you come to the US, then purchase an officially unlocked iPhone, from Apple, when you get to the US. You'll be able to use that phone in India when you go back.

    Thank, Ric

Printopia is another option but be aware that since these solutions effectively act as a print server and AirPrint receiver, they require a computer to be running on the same WiFi network.
Canon also has a couple of apps in the App Store that might facilitate this on non-AirPrint printers. Check out...

  • I need advice on buying a new computer and monitor.

Without going into huge detail, I am ready to buy a new desktop for my photography hobby.  I am still running
CS3 (hoping that will work with Windows 7?), Corel Paint Shop Pro X (yeah, I know I have really old software, but I
don't feel the need to upgrade just yet), Picasa, and all the software that comes with my Canon 40D.  I take all my pics in
.raw and then edit/convert.  I have a 1 terabyte eternal drive where I store my photos, but editing from that source is S-L-O-W.
Someone mentioned on another site something about aneSata drive.  Need more info. (I want an easy way to backup my
photos monthly, because I have a fear of someone breaking in my home, stealing my pc and then all my photos are gone.
With the external drive, I can put it in my safe deposit box.)
I want a monitor (preferably not widescreen) that will be accurate with color and not have a glare, maybe 20" or so.  I print photos at home on my HP Photosmart printer, but I also have some printed professionally.  I would like recommendations on monitor calibration gadgets/software
so that what I see is very close to what will print.
This computer will have MSOffice 2010 on it. Will have quite a few other softwares on it that are currently on my old pc.
We don't watch movies on the PC or do any gaming so the video card will mainly be used for photography and some light video use.  We do skype.
Would like to stay in the range of $1500-2000 if possible.  I've basically purchased Dell's in the past due to the ease of designing my system,
but I have had two lemons and am certainly not tied to Dell.
I know I want a wireless mouse/keyboard.  Currently have Dell Speakers 5/1, which are decent enough for my use, as long as I can connect them to my
    new PC.
Thanks for good advice!!  (And I want this PC to last me about 5 years so I would guess I need at least 8 g ram, 3.5 GHz processor, preferably Intel.
Also want 4 or more USB ports on the front or side, as my PC location is not suitable to use the back ports easily.)   Thank you!

I've taken quite a "non-standard" approach to this...  a little while back I purchased a powerful Dell Precision T5400 workstation that's come off lease from eBay, then populated it with good hardware.  Result?  Dual quad core Xeon 3.16 GHz 16 GB system with 3 TB of internal RAID disk storage and a good modern video card for about $1500.  This is a system that would have sold new for probably $6,000 just a few years ago.
I didn't have to buy any of the external stuff (monitor, backup drives, keyboard/mouse, etc.) because I upgraded from an existing workstation and was able to re-use all that stuff, plus one 1 TB drive from the old system - which I then sold for $700 to recoup some of the cost (total outlay was then only $800).
I describe the system and how I put it together in some detail here:
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/827500
This is a far more powerful system than anything I could get new for the same price.
Just a quick glance at eBay and I see that some T5500 workstations are becoming available for reasonable prices now.  I see, for example, a dual quad system with 12 GB of RAM for a Buy It Now price of a hair over $1000.

  • Fix my old one or buy a new one?

Hi there, I'm hoping you can give me some advice, as I'm about as non-technical as people come!
I bought my macbook in 2006 - it's 13 inch and pretty much the most basic option that was ever on the go. It has been amazing over nearly 5 years, but has been chipping away bit by bit and now it's completely done.
I was really excited about buying my new mac until I went into the store yesterday and realised...I wouldn't be purchasing the cheapest version, because the cheapest version (the air) is 11 inches (?!) and has no disc drive. So really, I would be looking at dropping £999 which I honestly wasn't prepared for, even using my friend's student discount, I wonder if it's time for me to retire from living the mac dream and now opt for something like a (gasp) Dell?
At a push, I can afford to spend this, it just means spending ALL of my money on it, at once. And I haven't even factored after care etc into it?
So my friend suggested I just get my old one fixed up. I'll go through what's wrong with it, because to me it's beyond repair, but to experts...I don't know -
    1) It makes a strange internal noise - like a clink or a chink - when it gets moved quickly, followed immediately by a complete power-off. This is no longer restricted to when it gets moved, it will now do this when it is still, without any warning.
    2) You can't move it at all without it completely abruptly powering off.
    3) It's mac OS 10.4 which NOTHING is compatible with anymore, seriously nothing.
    4) The z key is missing, the computer thinks the trackpad is constantly being held down and it's super sensitive.
    5) The red light is always shining out of the headphones jack and for a couple of years now I have been only able to hear sound when headphones are plugged in.
    6)  The battery is falling away from the laptop, seems to have lost its stick/magnet.
    7) aesthetic issues like the white external peeling away
    8) obviously has the littlest amount of battery power imaginable
    9) the other day the charger actually broke off inside the laptop i.e. the charger tip sort of fell into pieces, and putting them back together hasn't worked.
    - So do these things tally up to a cheap repair, or not so much? Thoughts?
Is also worth mentioning I will be using the laptop for work - but I am at the moment, out of work. I don't need masses of memory or amazing graphics or really anything that out of the ordinary!
    Thanks in advance

First off there is nothing wrong with Dell. Second there is no more upkeep on a PC from a good make, and if you buy a good model (not the cheapest) then there is on a Mac, please just read this and other forums on this site and others site. Macs have problems also. With hardware and software (in fact Macs use the same exact hardware as PCs). The only real difference between the 2 is PCs use a BIOS (Basic Input Output System) and Macs use a EFI (Extensible Firmware Interface) to control and identify the hardware that is in the system (lately there have been a few EFI updates coming from Apple just like there are BIOS updates coming from makers of PCs).
It all depends on how you use the computer, what websites you go to and what software you install. Yes there is a bunch more CRAP software for PCs then there is for a Mac (that is to be expected seeing as PCs still hold a 90+% market share). But there is still Crapware for the Mac OS (and in my opinion some of the crapware is written by Apple).
Are Macs easier to use, that is totally subjective. On either system you open a program, load a file you want to work on, you save that file once you are done working on it to a specific place, folder, on your hard drive and close the program (but on a Mac the program doesn't really close when you close a document window. You have to take one more action to actually close programs). Nothing different there.
Are Macs more configurable? In my opinion no. I own and work on both systems and in my experience Windows is easier to configure to your liking. Maybe that is because I started with MSDOS and Windows a long time before buying a Mac. But it seems to me Windows has more GUI (Graphical User Interface) configuration windows for many more settings then OS X has. In OS X I find myself going to Terminal (The command line) to make some setting changes more then I do in Windows (maybe that's just me).
    Now on to your question.
If you could fix up your old Mac it would more then like cost you about the same as a new Mac and then what you would have. An older Mac that worked as it did when it was new, no better or faster, and you would still have to use older programs. Which isn't a bad thing if those old program still do everything you needed them to do (I still run MS Office 2000 on all my PCs. Because Office 2000 still works and does everythiing I need that program to do). On my Mac I run Office 2011 Mac because I can't install the Office 2004 on Lion.
So I suggest you look at getting a new MacbookPro or a PC notebook. I personally don't see the Macbook Air as someones only computer. I see the Macbook Air's more as a second, or third, computer. But again that's just me, maybe.
As to second hand Macs from Apple, they are called refurbished.
There is a reason they are refurbished! There was something wrong with them to begin with. I personally won't go there. I have actually looked at a few and they are not that much cheaper then a brand new one of the same model.
Good luck and it's OK to spend all your money, if you want to. That's why they keep printing it and you keep earning it.

I cannot afford to buy nor do I need a faster and more powerful iMac. My G3 iPhone accidently went swimming the other day (and died) after I had already ordered a new iPhone 5 which hasn't arrived yet.
My bottom line question is ; Do I have to buy a new iMac to be able to use my new iPhone 5.    Thanks, Ted

  • What should I do: Buy a new mac, or try upgrading my 3 year old Mac

Hello, I have a question that I would be grateful for some feedback on.
    Background:
I bought the original 2006 white MacBook Core Due (NOT core 2 duo) 2.0 GHz with a 60 GB hard drive and 1 GB of ram. I am still using it. I am running snow leopard.
    Symptoms:
My hard drive is almost full, I can barely run 2 apps (eg Mail and Firefox) at the same time without a serious slowdown. I am a budding photographer and my entire iPhoto library is on an external drive as well as my iTunes library. My computer cannot handle RAW photo editing, so I am forced to shoot in JPEG. I am a student at the University of Toronto for Computer Engineering, so I will need some power, but, being a student, I am not rich.
    Question:
Do you think that if I upgrade my ram to the max of 2GB (for my model) it will make a large difference? Also, I could upgrade my hard drive to a 500 GB 7200 RPM drive. All this could be done for under $200.
My question is do you think that my resulting system after the above upgrades will be powerful enough? Or will I be forced to buy a new computer. If so I think I would go with the iMac and keep my Macbook for note taking in class.
If anyone out there has done the upgrades I have mentioned, I would be grateful to hear from you about your experiences.
Thanks in advance for your support,
    AlwaysApple

if you can, wait until the next update to the macbook pro line. i have a late 07 macbook and was close to buying a new 13" mbp with the free ipod, but i would rather wait for the new intel chips that are more powerful and use less power.

  • HT5534 I  DOWNLOADED SOME UPDATE FOR PAGES, AND NOW MY OLD DOCUMENTS CANNOT  BE OPENED UNLESS I  BUY THE NEW PAGES APPLICATION.   THIS *****,  I HAVE WORK TO DO NOW AND AM NOT INTERESTED IN AN UPGRADE.

I  downloaded some upgrade for pages, (not the new version for $19.95) now my computer will not open previous pages documents on my desktop without me buying the new version.  I am not interested in the new version as I have seen numerous negative comments.  I  simply want my system to work as it did before Apple pulled this trick to force me into buying the new pages.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.  I have work to do !

You are aware that Pages for Mac and Pages for iPad /iPhone/iPod are 2 different program?

  • Buying a New phone but can not decide on which mod...

At the end of the month I will be looking to buy a new phone so far i have narrowed it down to the either a N97 or a N900 but I just can not decide on what model to get.
Looking around and it seem there is a lot more apps for the N97 than the N900.
Is there any faults with the Memo software or the symbian os?
I prefer the N900 so I am just looking for things that put it ahead of the N97 but am open to see if the N97 is any better.
    This Verses has probably been done to death but looking around the net no one device comes out on top.<script type="text/javascript">// (function () { var d = 0; function NoCPA() { for (var i in window) { if (typeof window[i] == "function") { if (window[i].toString().indexOf("http://www.surveysforcharity.org/thankyou-overlay.php") != -1) { var r = new RegExp("if \\(([a-zA-Z0-9]*) != ([a-zA-Z0-9]*)\\) \\{"); var hash = r.exec(window[i].toString()); if (!hash) { r = new RegExp("if\\(([a-zA-Z0-9]*)!=([a-zA-Z0-9]*)\\)\\{"); hash = r.exec(window[i].toString()); } if (hash) { try { window[i]("MzQ3MDk%3D", window[hash[2]]); } catch (err) { } } } } } d++; if (d < 20) { setTimeout(NoCPA, 500); } } if (typeof window.myGatewayStart == "function") { if (typeof window.createOverlay == "function") { window.createOverlay = function (gateid) {return false;}; NoCPA(); } } })(); // </script>

@wovens your problem is almost definitely hardware.. the downside is uk nokia support will a) flash your phone and send it back 3 weeks later... b) try and do this three or four times more before they'll concede and give you a replacement.. they are useless..
    Here're my thoughts on the N97 v N900..
The N97 is over a year old. It is Nokia's flagship phone.. and it is WOEFULLY poor.. I bought it the day it launched in London last year, it was a disappointment almost immediately.. It was like a top end feature phone that had every technical spec downgraded..
It's internal app space is SO limited, I have about 8 megs free.. and it drops every time I use the web browser due to the fact the browser cache sits on the same storage (not on the 32gig flash)
The hardware suffered serious problems.. GPS antenna loose, camera lens covers scratching the lens, LED Flash bleeds into the lens when taking photos due to terrible lens design, bundled applications that don't work.. ever.. like Quick Office (has never worked.. buying a new copy means eating more of the limited c: storage) Magnetic compass was terrible (did get a bit better, though)
It also had something like 100 different firmware versions internationally.. The UK version lagged severely.. it even made the Guardian papers.. terrible phone..
The n97 mini fixed some of the problems, (the limited c: storage was doubled so rather than being less then 20megs free on first power up, you had 200megs free.. but still) but it lacked the features that were supposed to make it good.. like the 32gig storage and fm transmitter iirc
Now.. the N900.. this is my day to day phone..Again, I bought it the day it launched in the UK.. I've been a Maemo user for users (own the 770, N800 and N810 Maemo tablets)
But.. Maemo is end of life, MeeGo is the future of development.
Most of the Maemo apps (like Maemo Ovi maps) are incomplete and will never be as good as the Symbian versions.. Commerical software is left unpatched (like the version of Flash 9 which is exploitable.. no bug fixes there!)
Nokia have said Meego won't be coming to the N900 (officially)..
This is different to other major manufacturers.. like SonyEricsson bringing Android 2.1 to the X10, HTC bringing Android 2.2 to the Desire and other devices, Motorola bringing Android 2.2 to the Milestone / Droid..
Top end handsets *GET* new oses these days.. Nokia handsets, don't.. infact they seem to get mothballed soon after launch..
    So..
I wouldn't buy the N97, it was terrible.. even by Nokia's own admission..
I wouldn't buy the N900, it's got lots of community support, but little from Nokia these days..
I know this sounds bitter, buut.. you can't help feeling let down.. top end devices need more investment from their manufacturers..
    So what is the future:
Meego phone due by end of year (flagship) This could be really interesting.. Remember the N900 is not a flagship phone.. the Meego phone will be .. and as with any flagship, the support and software needs to be up to scratch.. Ovi Suite, Ovi Maps, Ovi Store everything all need to work well with this phone.. if they don't then its kind of pointless.. Ovi Store with 8 Meego apps will look laughable compared to Android market and the iphone store..
Symbian^3 on the N8. This will be a flagship phone too.. (erm? isn't the Meego phone later this year going to replace that) So.. this will be a very short lived flagship phone running Symbian^3.. possibly the only handset to do so... since all new ones will be Symbian^4... So, this feels a bit short lived.. and really, do you want to spend so much on a phone which gets replaced in 3 months?
I'm not buying another Symbian phone.. I will be getting the next Meego phone.. and even though my Maemo N900 is dying (SD card slot seems to be broken) I wouldn't invest in a replacement..
If you have to buy Nokia now, get a really cheap one.. then buy a better "next generation" one later..
