Buying a second hand iPad 2. What should I look out for?

Hi, I'm from the UK and I'm buying a second hand unlocked Ipad 2 (It wasnt bought unlocked), Is there anything in particular i should be wary of before buying. I'm buying this from a friend so i have the chance to physically look at it before buying? Its over a year old so, but can i still get some kind of apple care?
Also i've read that iPads arent locked to specific networks? But my friend tells me he had to unlock it to use his GiffGaff simcard..
Thanks in Advance

I can't comment on the cellular. HOwever make sure that iPad isn't still linked to the original owner's apple ID or you'll buy a brick.
http://support.apple.com/kb/PH13695
explains what the activation lock is and if the original owner's Apple ID is still on there or they can't give it to you, then don't buy it. Because it can't be unlocked.

  • I'd like to go back to Snow Leopard from Lion. What should I look out for?

I downloaded OS X Lion from the Mac App Store back in February, and I'm getting sick of Lion so I'd like to go back to Snow Leopard. I have the install disc. Will all of my files be used in Snow Leopard, or will I have to save all of them?

    Downgrade Lion to Snow Leopard
    1.  Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.4.1.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups, do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion files.

Become familiar with how it works. Then try out some of the features. Examine it for damage or dents. Is it still under warranty?

  • Buying a used iMac G5, tips and things to look out for?

What tips could you guys give me on when looking for a used iMac G5? I like the 20" models specifically and it seems the models are all over 1.6GHz so the speeds are fine.
I currently own a G4 1.67 PowerBook and did a bit of reading up on that before I bought it, seeing what things to look out for what things turned faulty after a while and such. Such as the logic board and the 1 RAM slot going faulty on a few models, recalled batteries, which helped a lot in buying a used one.
I'm looking for a new desktop but can't afford to fork out over 1 grand for the new iMac's and the speed of my PowerBook is enough for my usual browsing and processing and few photos. So please don't bother telling me to buy a new one cos new is always best, I don't mind spending reasonably less and having a decent machine still - 1.67 15" PowerBook has proved well :P

Don't buy a new intel. buy a refurbished one from Apple. The PPC architecture is on its way out, few programs are being written for it, and most new applications are only for intel. I realize that even a refurb might cost a bit more than you planned to spend, but it will be worth it down the road.
Look in the [Apple Store|http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/specialdeals/mac?mco=MTE3NjY], the choice changes daily, so just keep you eye open for the one you want and snap it up. And get Apple Care as well.
Let us know what you ended up with please,

  • I buy a second hand ipad unopened  and no receipt

I bought second hand ipad unopened  and no receipt .I'm afraid it is a ipad bought the insurance。do we have any way to fix it

Try posting in your native language. It is difficult to understand what you are asking.
It sounds like you are saying you bought a stolen or new never used iPad and you are now worried that the owner will claim it. Or you bought a stolen/new never used iPad and it is broken and you have no insurance to pay for fixing it.

  • Planning on Buying Used 2008 Black Macbook on Craiglist, what should I watch out for?

I have one in mind already and hte owner say that the battery is shot.  but i have a 2008 macbook battery at home that I will replace that with.  What are some things that i can do to test the computer to make sure everyhting else is in working order.  What are some things to look out for?

DO NOT buy it unless it comes with the origional 2 discs that shipped with it.  Ask to use disc 2 to run the Apple Hardware Test before you purchase it.  Make sure EVERYTHING works.  Bring a cd/dvd with you to test the optical drive.  Open TextEdit or any word processing program they have on it and test EVERY key.  Also, check
mac2sell.net to make sure they are asking a reasonable price.  Overall, use common sense.

  • What defects should I look out for on a new C2D MacBook?

    Hi all,
So, here's my Mac story. I've had macs for the past 4 years, I just like working on them when I have the option. When the new MacBook came out last Spring I immediately bought one, and then 3 returns laters, I got one that wasn't falling apart and was happy. Then the C2D came out, and I was antsy to upgrade. I know it was foolish but I talked myself into a MBP C2D. I got that, about 2 weeks ago and was very dissapointed in the display, grainy and all. So I talked to apple and they're taking it back. But here I am with no laptop again. SO I purchased a new C2D MacBook, and it arrives today.
So back to the question ... what defects with the new one should be on the look out for? It's difficult to figure out which MacBook people are talking about when they talk about their problems.
    Thanks for the help

To be honest, you shouldn't be looking for any defects. There were some problems with a small percentage of the original MacBooks which have since been resolved and should not appear on the new Core 2 models. Get your MacBook and enjoy it. If you discover something is not working the way you feel it should, address it then. To be on the look out for problems that you may have heard others having is only going to make you worry and probably think you have found a problem where none may exist.

  • What is the recommended upgrade for OSX 10.6.8 and what should I watch out for with the upgrade?

I would like to know whether there is a recommended upgrade for OSX 10.6.8.  Is it Mountain Lion?  Is there anything I should watch out for in case I do the upgrade?  My computer is not working optimally and now my external drive (My Passport, 1TB) is not recognized by my computer.  Thanks!

You should try to get your computer working before you upgrade.
Check that your computer is compatible with Mountain Lion/Mavericks/Yosemite.
To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) model number 3,1 or higher
    Your Mac needs:
OS X v10.6.8 or OS X Lion already installed
2 GB or more of memory (More is better - 4 GB minimum seems to be the consensus)
8 GB or more of available space
Check to make sure your applications are compatible. PowerPC applications are no longer supported after 10.6.
    Application Compatibility
    Applications Compatibility (2)
    Do a backup before installing.

  • I'm thinking about buying a second hand ipad online. Is it stolen?

    Hi!
I'm new to ipads, so perhaps I can get this answered here!
I am about to buy a 16gb ipad online. It is used, but has everything and is practically new. I'm always afraid of buying something that would turn out to be stolen. This only happens when I buy something online that's not in its original packaging, especially since every time I upgrade my gadgets, I sell them to Gazelle.
I'm curious if there is a resource to put the serial number into a database, and see if it was stolen from a store or something. It's probably ok, however I would rather be on the safe side before I have the police breaking down my door because I sold a 200$ ipad to gazelle a year from now.
    Thanks!
Note: Sorry for the double edit. I am told it was never used, and is refurbished. I know you can register an ipad and track it. I'm afraid someone steals it from a store, then sells it online or something.

  • Just got refurb Macbook - what problems to look out for?

Hello all! Boy i am chuffed to have this little beauty before me... but i have this niggling feeling... its a refurb and it might 'have issues'.
What are the problems we know about? And how do i check it hasn't got 'em?
Its a 2.16 Dual Core 2 Duo, Super Drive, 120GB HD, 1GB of Apple RAM
I don't mind cracking it open and extracting serial numbers from funny places etc.
    Respect
    Matt

Technically you are correct, but if you do any visible damage to anything while opening it Apple could decide that an unauthorized repair or modification was attempted and deny warranty coverage. Most people don't have the proper tools or knowledge to disassemble a MacBook without leaving evidence it was opened.
When I used to do warranty repairs for another major electronics firm not Apple, we always inspected the heads of the screws in the case. If they were damaged in any way it had probably been opened by the customer. When we replaced any parts we replaced all the screws with new ones so after we got through you wouldn't know it had ever been opened.
I reprimanded one of my techs because he didn't use new screws and you could see they were had some damage. Our quality control was strict.
I just don't think it is worth it to take the chance of losing your warranty by opening the case.

  • What to look out for when upgrading from 10.4.5 to 10.4.6

I'm thinking about upgrading our server from 10.4.5 to 10.4.6 (I've delayed it because I remember hearing a few things were broken in the process on some setups). So, being the novice that I am, what should I look out for?

The best thing you can do is to take a full backup of your system and then apply the latest update.
Also, it is safer to apply the combo update.
If you do not hear problems in here, there are probably not any problems
