Buying a used 30" - any tips?

looking at buying a used 30" - any tips from you owners or used buyers on what to check for and look over that might not be so obvious?

My advice is - don't buy a used display unless it is really, really cheap. Visually displays do deteriorate over time, and new displays are constantly much better and much cheaper.
Personally I do not consider a refurbished new display in the same category as a used display.

  • Buying a used iMac G5, tips and things to look out for?

    What tips could you guys give me on when looking for a used iMac G5? I like the 20" models specifically and it seems the models are all over 1.6GHz so the speeds are fine.
    I currently own a G4 1.67 PowerBook and did a bit of reading up on that before I bought it, seeing what things to look out for what things turned faulty after a while and such. Such as the logic board and the 1 RAM slot going faulty on a few models, recalled batteries, which helped a lot in buying a used one.
    I'm looking for a new desktop but can't afford to fork out over 1 grand for the new iMac's and the speed of my PowerBook is enough for my usual browsing and processing and few photos. So please don't bother telling me to buy a new one cos new is always best, I don't mind spending reasonably less and having a decent machine still - 1.67 15" PowerBook has proved well :P

    Don't buy a new intel. buy a refurbished one from Apple. The PPC architecture is on its way out, few programs are being written for it, and most new applications are only for intel. I realize that even a refurb might cost a bit more than you planned to spend, but it will be worth it down the road.
    Look in the [Apple Store|http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/specialdeals/mac?mco=MTE3NjY], the choice changes daily, so just keep you eye open for the one you want and snap it up. And get Apple Care as well.
    Let us know what you ended up with please,

  • About to buy a personal domain, any tips

    I'm new to this and about to purchase a personal domain. Do I just buy the name or must I get a hosting package with it (some offer emails, 2GB storage etc). I assume the my .mac is the host but just want to make sure.
    Any help appreciated.
    Tony

    Tony ~ Your assumption that your +".Mac is the host"+ is correct, so yes, you just need to buy the personal domain without the hosting package with it.
    And unless you upgrade to a +.Mac Family Pack+ you'll have only one email address. A +.Mac Basic Membership+ comes with 10GB of combined email and file storage.
    If you don't want .Mac to be the host you can:
    1. Get the hosting package along with your domain name or...
    2. Sign up with another host separate from your domain name provider.
    Either way, when not using .Mac as the host, you would publish your iWeb site to a folder and then upload it to the non-.Mac host via +File Transfer Protocol+ (FTP) software. Here's a comprehensive list of Mac file transfer software:

  • Considering an iMac for basic college use. Any tips/advice/recommendations?

    Hey guys, I am getting some loan money that I can put toward a computer and I have always dreamt of getting one of those beautiful iMacs.
    I am thinking of just getting the basic model (and taking advantage of the free ipod touch that comes with it)
    I was just wondering for basic college use, do you think its an ok choice to make or am i better off doing something else. I do NOT need a laptop as I already have one.
    I just need to know if you guys have any advice for my purchase, any add-ons, any programs you recommend. Any advice would be great.

    For basic college use I would think the iMac would be great. A couple of things I would recommend first is try to max out the memory (don't buy from Apple) and you should probably get either (or both) iWorks 08 and Microsoft Office Student Edition. My suggestion is start out with iWorks and if you feel you need it get MS Office later. I would also recommend getting Apple Care to protect your investment.
    If you are a good shopper you can get good 4 MB of quality memory (Kingston, Crucial, or anything that meets Apples specs) for about $100, Apple Care is about $169 (or less) and iWorks will be about $79 (or less.) Last get yourself an external hard disk for Time Machine back-ups, for that I would a good quality firewire drive. There are a lot out there to choose from.
    Get what you need, it will just make the experience all the better!

  • I'm suddenly unable to open iTunes on my 5s phone (using ios7) any tips??

    Since yesterday I can't open the iTunes Store app. Tried powering off phone and restarting to try again with no luck. Any advice?

    Hello Ashjo277,
    Congratulations on your new iPhone 5s, and thank you for providing so much detail about the issue you are experiencing with the iTunes Store.
    The first thing I recommend is quitting and relaunching the applications on your iPhone:
    Double-click the Home button.
    Swipe left or right until you have located the app you wish to close.
    Swipe the app up to close it.
    You can find the full article here:
    iOS: Force an app to close
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5137
    If you are still seeing the same issue after quitting and relaunching the iTunes Store, I recommend resetting your iPhone:
    Resetting your device
    Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    You can find the full article here:
    iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
    If the issue persists, the last thing I recommend is backing up and restoring your iPhone:

    iTunes: Restoring iOS software

  • Started using illustrator any tips

    HI my name is joe and I'm a graphic designer/artist and I would like some feedback:
    converse illustration by Vex-arts on deviantART

    Kristacattack,
    The tracing results in separate paths. The straight lines show where the open filled paths start and end.
    In the first sample, you may drag with the Direct Selection Tool over the top where the straight lines meet and Ctrl/Cmd+J to join the the paths; you may do the same elsewhere to create continuous/closed paths (hopefully, you will only drag over the two endpoints, otherwise you will have to find and delete superfluous Anchor Points).
    This may be better than just cheating with the Live Paint Tool because the artwork becomes more coherent.
    Edit: Hi Monika.

    I would think a 15" with the i7 CPU. You can get a 13" with the i7 CPU but the 15" has a dedicated graphic chip along with the intergrated one.
    You will also need to upgrade the hard drive to a faster 7200RPM model instead of the standard 5400RPM model that comes with all MBPs. The Sibelius website recommends the 7200RPM or a SSD. You will also be better off installing 8GBs of RAM.
    Both of those upgrades can be made after you buy a MBP for much less then Apple charges for the same upgrades and you get to keep the original RAM and hard drive.

    No.

    That wasn't something that I was aware of, but looking at this http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4627 I'm not sure that there is much you can do about the device itself. I'm also not sure whether it only affects downloading directly on the device itself or whether you can connect the iPad to your computer and sync content across to it from your account that way - or even whether restoring back to factory defaults on the iPad will bypass the 90 days

    Hi, I'd like to put a black and white effect on my colour footage which will look really sharp but which also looks bright so the whites look bright and the blacks look very dark . Any tips of which best effects to use to achieve this look in Prem Pro. Thanks

    Under the Effects-Lumetri Looks-Desaturation choose a B and W effect. Then add the luma corrector from the Video effects-colour correction section. Adjust the brightness and contrast to get the effect you want.

  • Any tips for debugging apply handlers? How to use SYS.AnyData

    Well, I'm setting up my first stream.
    I've set up a simple stream just to understand the concepts, but now I need to start the real work.
    I've written an apply handler that takes the LCR, turns pulls values from the sys.AnyData, and uses them in another statement. I have excerpts from it below-- I've not used a SYS.AnyData before, and I'm not sure if I've set the conversion up correctly:
    CREATE OR REPLACE PROCEDURE reg_data_handler(in_any IN SYS.AnyData)
    RETURN SYS.AnyData
    IS
         lcr     SYS.LCR$_ROW_RECORD;
         lcr_anydata SYS.AnyData;
         -- Should I declare like this
    -- or should I make it a Number for
    -- the SYS.AnyData conversion?
         -- TYPE is really a NUMBER(11)
    samp_time nh_rlp_stats.sample_time%TYPE;
    BEGIN
    -- Access the LCR
    rc := in_any.GETOBJECT(lcr);
    -- Get the object command type
    command := lcr.GET_COMMAND_TYPE();
    IF command = 'INSERT' THEN
    -- get the needed data
    lcr_anydata := lcr.GET_VALUE('new','SAMPLE_TIME');
    rc := lcr_anydata.get_number(samp_time);
    Does anyone have any tips on how to do the debugging as painlessly as possible? I've tested as much of the individual units as possible, but in order to test the code that pulls from the LCR, it seems like I'll need to hook it into the steam and hope for useful dbms_output statements. Other ideas?
    Thanks very much.
    Robin T

    Actually, I have read the supplied list a couple of times over. There is a difference between reading and doing, particularly as documentation can be mis-interpreted or miss key items. I supplied the code snippets in case some one could see that I was mis-reading the info.
    My particular concern is with debugging: are there any tips people have learnt to make the process easier? If I just hook the handler into a stream and test it that way, I suspect that it might take some time to shake the kinks out. However, it occurred to me this morning that maybe I can fake out the LCR by constructing one of my own in a wrapper procedure and calling the handler within that. So, I'll see if that speeds up the process.
    Thanks very much for your reply.

  • Any tips for using the battery ? T500

    Are there any tips to use the battery for a long time ?
    I've seen the posts somewhere that "conditioning" is not needed for this battery, Li-on based ?
    Is recharging when the battery is half-charged a bad habit ?
    Thanks

    Hello shong9,
    First you should load your battery 36h, then unload it normally, till it will go to sleep or hibernate
    (depends on setting in power manager).
    Second load it 24, then unload it normally till it went to sleep or hibernate.
    Third and last, load it 12h, then unload it normally till it went to sleep or hibernate.
    Then you battery has got it´s full capacity and the powermanger will do all for you, to keep it healthy.
    You should leave the battery in your machine, if using AC.
    When you are working mobile, then charge it, when it´s necessary.
    That´s it.

    To enable the form to be signed in Reader you will need to open the form in Acrobat; goto Advanced>Enable Usage Rights and then save this copy of the form for sending out to the users.
    The user should then be able to edit and digitally sign the form. They can then email the signed/saved pdf as a browsed for attachment or via the email icon in the toolbar. Note - if you have created an email submit button on the form, then unless they have Acrobat they could only return an xml file.
    The other way to do this however is to create a dataset by 'distributing' the form. This time the Email Return button will send back a full version of the form. During the distribution setup you will have the option to email the form directly or to save it and send it later,so you can send to users as and when or even post it to a website or intranet.
    When you receive and open the returned form it will ask whether you want to add it to the predetermined dataset (or if you want to categorise the returns into geographical areas for example, you could create new additional datasets at this point). If the form is data heavy however, the dataset will become very large and unwieldy pretty quickly, but you can export the data from it (including signatures) in xml format and import this into an Excel spreadsheet.
    To simplify the Excel xml import process I'd recommend you carefully structure your form in the hierarchy (LiveCycle) into the order you would want the data items to appear in your spreadsheet and switch off those data items that you will not need by setting the default binding for the irrelevant fields to "None".
    Clear as mud? Hope this helps.

  • I'm going to Europe and will have my iPad along, any tips on the best plans for Internet use etc?

    Any tips for international use with iPad?

    Since storage space is not a limiting factor for you, you might want to take a look at Apple Lossless. Lossless will give you the equivalent audio quality of an uncompressed format such as WAV or AIFF with about a 30% decrease in file size compared to the uncompressed formats. Keep in mind that if you have an iPod, these Lossless fies will severely decrease your iPod capacity. For instance, a 30GB iPod importing the avg. 4 minute song in Lossless will only hold about 1150 songs.
    Personally, I use AAC @ 256 which I find comes pretty darn close to the original CD quality with a large decrease in file size. I have a 60GB iPod, so I was willing to sacrifice some iPod capacity for the improved audio quality.
