Buying advice... Mac Pro vs. MacBook Pro

Dear all,
I have been out of the mac market for a while, and find all the new options a bit overwhelming.
Here is my quick question:
To Mac Pro (MP)... or Mac Book Pro (MBP).
Obviously, the best answer is have both.... beyond that:
The MBP for portability is probably the best laptop in the world.
But the 2.8/2.9 highest processor is overpriced versus the 2.6's and the 2.4's.
The last mac laptop i bought was 2002, and i am really impressed how far they have developed.
But, i still worry about some laptop problems... like they heat up and tend to break down faster due to more wear & tear.
MP i always tend to think the computer in the same location, not being moved, etc.. gives them a longer life. Plus, the expandability of the MP is really amazing RAM wise, etc.
I found this benchmark page of MP vs. MBP... it really shows the desktop is still so superior... something you dont much here these days, with most sales being laptops.
http://www.barefeats.com/three08.html
Previously, I had a G5 dual 2.0, so i guess either option will seem faster to me... I guess i just need to weigh how much travel vs. studio time will be in my future...
Even if money was not a factor, seems a good idea to not buy both laptop & desktop at the same time... to get the benefit of later developments in whichever is not picked initially.
If anyone has any other advice, let me know & thanks in advance!

While Kappy says it is not a valid comparison I am going to have to disagree with him.
I faced the same decision as you are looking at right now, but mine was about a year ago now.
I chose the MacBook Pro with the faster processor, faster hard drive, and the high res 17" LED backlit display.
I have the Mac Pro right now.
The MacBook Pro 17" just wasn't what I needed to have in a laptop.
I think that it was too thin for the size it was and I had issues with how hot it was. Temp wise I really think it could get close to causing burns on unprotected skin.
The screen warped due to the hinges being overly tight from the factory (Apple store said that it was normal for them to be really tight so the large display doesn't fall, but not one of the floor models were like that) I returned the customized MacBook Pro to Apple that I had ordered online.
About 2 weeks later I ordered the Mac Pro 2x 2.8ghz Xeon, 2gb ram, 500gb hdd, Nvidia 8800GT. Then ordered more ram from newegg.com
The MBP cost me more than the Mac Pro did, even with student discount.
6 months later still happy with the Mac Pro I decided I wanted a laptop again.
I went out and got a Toshiba Satellite x205-SLI6 for way less than the MBP with system specs that are just as good. It is 2x thicker than the MBP but I think that is a good thing, I don't feel like it is going to break when I pick it up.
My suggestion would be to get a Mac Pro.
They have so much power that you will be set for a long, long time to come.
The laptop world is aimed at more disposable devices and are still at a point where they are starting to get some real power but I would wait for a quad core laptop to be released before I would ever get another one at this point.

Where can i buy original memory for my macbook pro 13inc mid 2012 and how much is this ?

"Memory sold by the Apple Online Store is guaranteed to be compatible with your Macintosh."
    http://store.apple.com/us/mac/mac-accessories/memory
Other than Apple there are only two vendors with which I have personal experience and can recommend: Crucial and OWC. People have reported problems with many other brands, yet Crucial and OWC's prices are as good as any you are likely to find.
Go to Crucial and download the little app that examines your system and recommends RAM upgrade options.
Their prices are good but don't have to buy memory from them - determine what you need and buy it from Crucial or OWC / MacSales. You'd be paying Apple a lot more than either one of them, and you don't have to.

  • Buying Opinion - Upgrade Powerbook vs MacBook Pro

I'm thinking I may try to upgrade my laptop as my main objective is to get CS4 right now but I have a friend who is selling his MacBook Pro for $900. What's your opinion as you would know better what Macs can handle? My main problem is speed especially with CS programs and I do need a new battery. I have a PowerPC G5 Dual with a large glossy screen for my most intense work that I can do from home. But I like to have a laptop that I can take on the road for working on projects. It's mostly for Photoshop/Illustrator/InDesign. So no animation or gaming purposes.
    I have:
    Machine Name: PowerBook G4 17"
    Machine Model: PowerBook5,9
    CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (1.5)
    Number Of CPUs: 1
    CPU Speed: 1.67 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
    Memory: 512 MB
    Bus Speed: 167 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: 4.9.5f3
    His computer:
2.16 ghz Core 2 Duo Processor
    3 GB RAM (Newly upgraded)
320 GB 7200rpm HDD (Newly upgraded)
Dual Layer Superdrive (DVD and CD recorder)
    15.4" 1440x900 Widescreen Glossy Display
    128MB ATI x1600 Video
    DVI-VGA adapter Cable
    Apple Wireless Remote
    Brand new battery
It includes OSX 10.6 Snow Leopard, iLife 09, and iWork 09, all part of the "Mac Box Set," so this is all legal software.
The original box, discs and documentation are all included.
The condition of the system is excellent with one minor exception - there seems to be a very slight bend in the casing underneath the expresscard slot. One of my photos shows it.
Do you think it's doable with what I have (and what could I do?) or should I go with the newer MacBook and save myself the headache? What's the main difference with the computers?
    Thanks everyone!
    Tiffany

Re: Buying Opinion - Upgrade Powerbook vs MacBook Pro
You can get a brand new MacBook for $999 so don't bother with the used one. For the price difference, save up and buy new MacBook Pro for $1199. Faster than Macbook. Shop around. Everyone is discounting. You might get free ram upgrades (unless you're getting free ram, buy separately and install yourself), free shipping. Try Epercom, CDW and Small Dog in addition to Apple. If you go to Apple store don't be shy about asking for a 10% business discount. I asked and got one for my imac last summer.
He's offering it at $900...does that seem like a fair price for what I'd get?

  • Im thinking about buying OWC ram for my macbook pro.

Im thinking about buying OWC ram for my macbook pro but dont know if it will have negative affects on my computer, should i do it?

Only if you install it wrong or use the wrong RAM.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/
Use the free Crucil.com checker to doublecheck if you need too.
You don't want Apple to do it, they quoted me $435 to upgrade $70 worth of RAM.
Do it yourself or have a local geek friend (PC or Mac) do it, it's not hard, unles you got bad eyesight and can't see the tiny screws. Use a catch mat, follow proper anti-static and handling. (touch only plastic)
Break something inside, your on your own though. No warranty coverqge or AppleCare for self inflicted damage.

Already saw how to replace on youtube:

Now I'm looking for a seller on e-bay. Anyone has bought recently and can refer?
All tips are welcome and thanks in advance!

Personally, I wouldn't purchase a battery from eBay for an expensive MBP.  What you get is what you paid for (buyer beware).
Call around to your local AS or AASP for prices.  Do a Google or Bing search.

insteade of using mac os on macbook pro, i wanted to install windows 8 pro on mac book pro, will that void my warranty

Installing any OS you want on your machine will not void the warranty.  Only making hardware changes other than those listed as "user servicable" by Apple, or negligence will void your warranty.
I will warn you that there might be SMC or EFI udates you will want for your Mac hardware that are only available if you are runnign Mac OS.  For this reason, you may want to keep a small partition on your drive which still has Mac OS installed, or at the very least, keep an external HD around to be able to boot Mac OS.  Additionally, if you are having hardware issues, like a failing DVD writer, you may have a harder time getting Apple to repair it under warranty if you can not reproduce the error under Mac OS.  When I had the DVD writer replaced in my first MacBook Pro, I found the problems trying to write discs under Windows 7, but when the tech could reproduce an error under Mac OS, he quickly accepted it was a hardware problem and not software.  Without reproducing it under Mac OS, he admitted that he might not be able to get them to replace the drive.

and where i find it ? and how much

Here are the International Apple support telephone numbers:

I note Egypt is not listed.
Purchasing a battery from a third party vendor is a high risk proposition.  Many such batteries have been found to be substandard.
I suggest that you try and contact Apple and see if you can have one shipped to you.

You need a Firewire 800 to 400 adapter or cable or a external USB 2/3 drive (self powered) it can default to the old USB the G5 uses 1 or 2.
    Format the drive info here.

  • Do I need trend smart surfing for mac for the macbook pro

do I need trent smart surfing for mac for my macbook pro?

That's totally up to you. If you have the need to restrict the web sites that can be visited, then a product such as Trend may be worth the cost. If you are only worried about malware from your own surfing, then I consider the price for Trend excessive and unnecessary. The freeware ClamXav and a bit of common sense - about what you download and from where, not falling for scams and fakes that ask you to provide personal information, and in keeping your operating system up to date -  should be sufficient.

    Hello edolillo,
It sounds like you are wanting to use your iMac as a secondary display for your MacBook Pro using a Thunderbolt cable. If your iMac is compatible, you may be able to use Target Display Mode, and this article outlines the requirements for it:

  • Installing After Effects 7.0 Pro on MacBook Pro

I am trying to install my After Effects 7.0 Pro for Mac on my MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion X and Intel processor but keep getting error messages and it won't install.
Any advice or can I not use 7.0 on a newer MacBook Pro?

It reads "The installation failed. The installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance."
My hunch is that the system requirements include having a PowerPC processor and my newer Mac has an Intel processor. But, I was wondering if there is any workaround to this.

  • Officejet Pro 8600 - Macbook Pro and Macbook Air will not print

    Products:
    HP Officejet Pro 8600
Macbook Pro (Mac OS X, Version 10.7.5)
Macbook Air (OS X, Version 10.8.2)
    Question:
Why did my Macs initially print fine, but now will not print at all?
    Full Story:
I have a wireless network at my house that consisted of a 30mb cable internet, Netgear 900n, HP Officejet Pro 8600, 2 Dell Laptops with Windows 7, a Lenovo Laptop with Windows 7, and Dell Tower with Windows 7 - All printed just fine.
The HP Officejet 8600 was added to my network about 2 months ago.
I added a Macbook Pro and a Macbook Air about 3 weeks ago.  Both Macs printed just fine for about a week.  Then suddenly they stopped.  I spent about 2 hours on the phone with HP Service, and they finally said it must be my router.  So I called Netgear.  Netgear was useless!  They wanted me to agree to charges for services before they would even discuss the issue.
Due to information provided by HP's service support, and because Netgear will not support their product, I promptly purchased a new router - an Apple Airport Extreme.
The Macs recognize the printer, will print if hardwired via a USB cable, but will not print wirelessly to the Officejet Pro 8600.  The PCs print fine.
The frustration that is being felt is compound by the fact that the Macs printed just fine with the Officejet Pro 8600 2 weeks ago, and now the printer just shows "idle"... even with a new router. (see image below)
Please help, I appreciate any support.
As a side note, the HP Service rep was very friendly, and definitely tried to support the HP Product, which is much more than I can say about Netgear.
    Thank you,
    This question was solved.

    Hi,
More likely the issue related with Multicast, which Apple devices relies on to communicate with teh device through the network.
First try unplugging the router for 30 seconds.
Plug it back to the power and wait for 2-3 minutes.
Turn the HP printer Off and back On, then check for any difference.
If the same persists, try changing your router configuration as following
Note: the settings below are not related with the HP product, I provide you the steps as a best effor and those are only based on my own knowledge. you may try modifying the router settings at your own risk:
Open the router configuration page (can be found listed as the Default Gateway by clicking the Wireless icon on the printer, then print a network configuration report.
    Click the Advanced tab.
Click the Setup option from the menu, then click on WAN Setup.
Make sure to uncheck the box next to Disable IGMP Proxying and Apply the changes.
Click the LAN Setup on the same Setup menu.
Set the RIP Version as RIP-2 and Apply the changes.
Reboot your router and then check for any change.
I hope you may find that information useful, you may also use the user guide below for further information:

  • Does it worth to move from macbook pro to macbook pro retina?

    Hey
    I have macbook pro with
Processor  2.66 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory  8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512 MB
and its good but many people are saying macbook pro 2013 with retina display is the best laptop and has many features so do you advice me to move from macbook pro to macbook pro 2013 with retina display?
    thanka

It's a very sweet machine, of course. Although the upgrade path is a bit dicey. Just my opinion, but unless you have very demanding graphics needs (in which case you probably should have a desktop system with a huge monitor), I don't see the point of spending all the money. Probably you would get more value if you take your current machine and max out the RAM and get an SSD.
It's hard to advise anyone in such matters via the internet.
    Here are some good reviews:
