Buying an iBook

Im looking to buy a new 14inch ibook in the next few months. Can I order a customized computer at my apple retail store and have it shipped TO THE STORE and i can pick it up there, or do they just ship them to your house? I am not home most of the day so signing for a package is hard. Thanks.

Welcome to the iBook Discussions! You should probably call your local Apple retail store and ask them if your iBook can be shipped there. But, other folks have done that so it shouldn't be a problem.

  • Buying an iBook G3 [Please Help!!!]

I am considering buying this iBook G3 from this website
    http://www.powerbookguy.com/xcart/catalog/iBook-G3-500MHz-CDRW-12-inch-p-17042.h tml
I have a couple questions on if I should actually buy it
    1. can I upgrade this OS to OS 10.3.9 (Panther) and it run with good speed?
    2. are there any other better websites I can go to? [please don't tell me ebay because I have already
tryed and I don't plan on it again]
    3. is this all around better than an iMac G3 (thats what I currently have)
    4. can i watch videos and meet the basic needs of a highschool student?
    5. is a 100 Mhz difference that big of a deal? (I might get a different model than the other)
sorry for all the questions but you know better safe than sorry (and please don't tell me to get a better computer I really don't have the cash)
thanks in advance and God bless!

    1. yes, however for the best results you may want to add more memory.$$$$$
    2. go to lowendmac.com and click on deals. select ibooks and you'll find a list of resellers. (i've bought 3 apple laptops off ebay and have been satisfied with all 3. you've really got to chose your sellers carefully and be patient.)
    3. well now i'm sure an ibook 500 is better than an imac 266 and worse than a imac700. a lot of changes were made to the imac g3's during its run and you didn't mention which model you have.
4 & 5. when apple went to the 600mhz model they upgraded the vram. that will make a difference in watching videos. anything greater than 600 and you will have a greater chance of having logic board problems.
    6. personally i would not buy any older laptop without the software restore discs. call (yes, telephone) and ask about the discs. my personal opinion is that a 600 somehow hits the sweet spot. good luck.

  • How do I buy an Ibook for a friend?

I thought there was a way to buy an Ibook for a friend, that he could download on his Ipad. I can't find the instructions anywhere.
    Can someone help me?
    thanks

Unfortunately, unlike in the app and iTunes store, you cannot purchase iBooks for others.

  • Can i buy the ibook with credit card

can I buy the iBook with credit card

You should be able to buy an ibook from the ibookstore with your credit card. If you don't already have the card on your iTunes account then you should be able to add it if it's registered to exactly the same name and address as you have on your account, it was issued by a bank in your country and you are currently in that country - you can either add it by logging into your account via the Store > View Account menu option on your computer's iTunes, or by tapping on your id in Settings > Store (Settings > iTunes & App Stores on iOS 6) on your iPad.

  • Is it worth buying an iBook these days?

    Hi!
I will in all likelihood make a MAC laptop my own in a few weeks and am torn between the MacBook Pro and the iBook. The MacBook is obviously much more powerful but plagued by many problems that I would rather stay away from. In light of that, is it work buying an iBook then? I like performance and want this Laptop to take me through Grad School. I am running applications such as MATLAB or LabVIEW which are fairly power hungry. A maxed out iBook is still $1000 cheaper than the MacBook configuration that I would desire, but how is its performance? Should I perhaps stick around and wait out until the MacBook Pro issues are resolved?
Thanks for all and any input.
    Regards,
    Christian

I think it boils down to what you are using the computer for. If you are using photoshop and do not want something slow then Ibook or Powerbook. If you need software that is not available to run native on a intel mac then I would buy the power pc.
If it is a matter of reliability the new revisions of the macbook pro seem to be fine. It is a beautiful machine. And intel is the future of macs. However, this is a transition period. We do not know what new products will be coming out and it seems as though there is a lot of development going on right now at Apple and Intel. Designed obsilesence. Buy the latest and greatest today and tomorrow something better will come out.
So my suggestion is to go to the apple store and try the models you are interested in. Get a feel for each machine. See how fast they open programs and work. See which one will have the software you need to run. Check out Apple on-line. There are great re-furbished models of powerbooks and ibooks available for a great price. My iBook was refurbished. It had a few barely noticible scratches but other than that is just as a new one for $250 less!
Personally I like to get a good deal. I chose the power pc because it is a known variable. Everything works well. The powerpc architecture is really rather amazing and I do not regret for a second my choice. Realize that only the iBook and PowerMac have not been released with an intel chip. So before the end of the year they will. Do you want more expensive but new or less expensive but old. Both are 100 times better than any pc alternative in terms of form and function so you really have nothing to lose either way!!

It's not currently possible to gift ibooks, if you buy an ibook then it will be tied to your account.

Now I know ... nothing...well at least about macs or ibooks (im a pc man at the moment). So heres my q's
    1) Do they have 801.11b/g and will it be compatible with my belkin wireless router and smoothwall (firewall) setup i.e. dhcp etc...
    2) can you run open office?
    3) As she will use it for office stuff too, can you move word/excel docs between pc and mac via a memory stick?
    4) what should i be looking out for for PC / Mac file compatabilty
Thanks in advance all, I do appologise for looking lazy but time is of the essance.
    Neil

    Hi TheMoog,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
    1) Yes, She should be completely compatible with the Belkin Wireless router. For more information go here
    2) To be honest I don't know about the program, but this site says you can.
    3) Yes she can defiantly use MS Office on her computer and be able to move it over to PC and vice versa. I don't use MS Office except for Excel. I am a huge supporter of iWork
    4) No you shouldn't really be worried about PC/Mac compatibility because there are so many ways to change info. The biggest thing that people have a problem with I find is games. You can check past posts for more info.
    I hope that helps,
    Jon

  • Buying an iBook G4

I'm considering whether or not I should buy an iBook G4. I just want to know the answers to the following questions.
Does the iBook come with a built in Airport Extreme Card?
If it does, is it compatible with my current Linksys WRT54G router?
If it isn't compatible, can I buy a new card or do I have to purchase a new router?
    thanks

    Hello Young Kang,
Yes, the iBook comes with AirPort Extreme built in and it's compatible with all 802.11b/g routers including the Linksys WRT54G (a very popular model with Mac users).

  • Im buying an ibook g4 ( can it run warcraft 3 smoothly?)

Im buying an ibook g4. The specs are 1.33 ghz with 1 gb of ram. Can this run warcraft 3 smoothly?

Not sure if this will help, but taken from their website (if right one):
    Systyem requirements:
    Macintosh® OS 9.0 or higher/ Mac OS X 10.1.3. or higher:
    400 MHz G3 processor
    128 MB of RAM
16 MB ATI Technologies or nVidia chipset 3D video card
    700 MB HD space
    4X CD-ROM drive
    Recommended:
    600 MHz processor
    256 MB of RAM
    32 MB 3D video card
DirectX® 8.1 compatible sound card (Windows)
    Multiplayer:
Low-latency, active Internet connection rated at 28.8 Kbps or faster. LAN play requires TCP/IP connection.

  • Buying a ibook

I'm going to buy an ibook G4 and wanted to know what extras i need to get or that would be good. Should i purchase the .MAC package? what is it mainly used for?

is there a major difference in weight betweent the 12in and 14in....?
Faster processor, larger screen (although same resolution as the 12) and Super Drive. Have a look here for specific comparisons.
do you get word or a program like it with the ibook?
Yes, Text Edit and Appleworks are included as installed software. Again, the above reference sets out what is included in either machine.
I opted for the 12 v the 14 as I wanted something more compact for travel. If you are going to be on the go with the iBook, I suggest you purchase a reliable carrying case to minimize bumps etc. Also, I strongly suggest purchasing Apple Care to extend the warranty to 3 years plus providing telephone support. Otherwise, you'll only get a year warranty and 90 days telephone support. The moveable nature of the notebook, ie more susceptible to damage etc., makes Apple Care a good investment.
Regarding iWork and Office 2004, these are specialty programs. The former is rather inexpensive ($79) and includes Keynote (presentation software) and Pages (more specialized word processing application). Microsoft's Office is more expensive. I suggest you have a look at the Apple Web Site for more specific descriptions of these software packages.

  • TS2551 I upgraded my iPhoto, and now I cannot buy my IBook..

I went to buy my finished iBook, and iPhoto suggested that I upgrade prior to doing so.. So I did and now I can't buy my iBook..the purchase screen wont load.. any ideas why? Any hel[p would be greatly appreciated!

I would love some help.. ok,
    - What version of iPhoto: iPhoto "11 Version 9.4.3
    - What version of the Operating System: Mac OS.X 10.7.5
    - Details: Iphoto was working fine, I made an iBook and went to purchase it, and on the purchase page a pop up came up saying that apple recommedned i update to the latest version of iPhoto before puchasing the iBook. So I updated iPhoto from the apple store, and after the update was completed I tried to purchase the iBook but now cannot. The white page comes up to buy it but is missing all the details (see below), and when I press check out nothing happens.
Has only been hapening since yesterday when I updated iPhoto, eveything else appears to be working as normal.
I have restarted the computer a couple of times including iin safe boot mode. Nothing seems to help. If you have any ideas they will be much appreciated!!

  • Using my credit in the iTunes store when buying in iBooks for PC on my macbook?

I currently have and generally always maintain a credit balance in my iTunes store account. Can this be used when i buy iBooks in the iBooks app?

Anything you purchase in the App Store, iTunes, iBooks or iBooks for the computer will charge whatever credit card you have set up on your account.  If you have a credit, that will be charged first and then the remaining balance (if there is one) will be charged to your credit card on file.

  • Off Topic, But I Need An Answer (About Buying an iBook G3)

I was looking around on eBay for different stuff and I came across several iBook G3's (the colored ones). I know that technology has changed a lot, but I think it would be cool to have one just to fool around on and show off (it would turn heads).
I found a user-upgraded model with the following specs:
    Processor: PowerPC 366 MHz
    RAM: 320 mb
    Hard Drive: 20 gig
    12" screen
    Mac OS X Panther
    Include Microsoft Office X
I wouldn't pay more than $200 total (with shipping) for something like this.
Would that setup be able to surf the internet, perform basic word processing, play iTunes music, and use MSN Messenger relativly well? Or is it simply a terrible idea to buy something like this off eBay?

You most likely wont find a colored iBook with a 20GB drive, the shipping hard drives for the models had 4, 6 or 10GB drives.
Then again, I see you did, good luck at getting it for less than $200.

  • Buying an ibook soon.

Hey. I plan on buying a 12 inch G4 ibook, with a 80 GB hd. I also plan on adding some RAM later on. I plan on using my ibook to do homework, e-mail, chat, surf the web... the usual student stuff, but I'm also interested in using iMovie to edit some movies. I realize that the ibook isnt the best laptop to edit movies, but I just dont have the resources to buy a powerbook. So I was wondering if there is any software that I should buy/dowload/install. I was also wondering if there are accessories that would help prolong the life of my ibook or make my life easier. I also plan on buying ms office the student version. How does that run on macs?

    Hey there,
Hope this helps. I am a student too and just recently bought the 12'' inch iBook with 80HD and maxxed out the RAM. (I bought the same RAM as apple but not in an Apple store to get it cheaper).
How many GB of files do you have on your other computer? I have about 45GB or so and now regret to have gotten the 80GB. I Should have gotten the 100. Because don't forget, it actually is 74GB, then they install tiger.. which takes another 12GB or so. So it does fill up quite fast. But hey, not many people have as many files as me so maybe it's not necessary to get more, or maybe just even get a 60 to save money. The 80GB also has a good price/storage. Better than the 100 for sure.
On the RAM side, I never actually booted my computer with 512 RAM, I got it directly with 1.5GB, and to be honnest, besides a slow down here and there, there hasn't been any lack of RAM. I do not do video editing, but i'm sure that if you boost your RAM a bit, it should all be fine.
Hope this helped, also as a student, try and get apple care. Look in the shops around to see if you can get an Educational price for it... that's what I got and it ended up costing only 199 instead of 3XX for the Apple care.
    Sincerest Regards,
    Eddi

  • Advice on buying an ibook

i would like a little bit of advice on buying a new ibook. Firsly i know nothing about macs apart from that i watch regular webcasts which are amazing! i am an experienced linux and windows user and i am involved in a lot of sound production? is the ibook for me, i shall need to do sound production on the move and create quality audio? any pointers?
    Dave

    Hi Davebradford,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
There have been many posts about whether or not to get an iBook or not. The main thing is what you need/are planning to do with it. Here is a similar post on if the iBook is the right choice or not. In my post there is also a link to one of my previous posts on this subject (more in depth). I don't know how in depth you are in sound production, but the Powerbook might suit your needs better. I suggest looking into GarageBand. Also, Apple has a site devoted to Pro/Music + Audio.
    I hope that helps,
    Jon
