Buying an iMac (the 20-inch model with 2.0Ghz Processor)
Hello all, well, i need an iMac, because i like graphics design, so i can do better things on a Mac, but i'm a gamer, too, i play games like Call of Duty 2, Battlefield 2, etc, so that iMac must have a good video card for those 2 reasons: Graphics Design and Gaming performance. I dont have much money, which means i cant choose between the 3 models: just that one, and i need to know if the ATI HD 2400XT video card can do what i want: Play Games and Design in Programs like Photoshop, Premiere, etc.
Regards
Well, don't just take my word for it, the web is full of criticism of the iMac as a gaming platform. Personally, I couldn't care less, as I rarely game. However, there's no point being religious about it. There are better choices for gaming.
Try Googling for "iMac gaming" and see what the rest of the world thinks. Here's an example: http://blog.wired.com/gadgets/2007/08/imac-ad-up-also.html
And if you can't be bothered to read the article, the meat of the argument is in the following comparison of graphics cards at Toms Hardware. The comparison is actually for the 2600XT which is faster than the 2600 Pro in the iMac 24" - but it still ***** big time. Take a look:

I am planning to buy an iMac 21.5 inch with Fusion drive and 16 GB RAM while i visit USA for a conference. My country of origin is India and the option of configuring to my need is not avaialble here in India. My concern is once i am back to India, will my iMac be covered by the Apple's Protection Plan if something goes wrong here in India?
I recently came across some posts regarding International warranty related issues for iPhone and iPad....hence this crossed my mind...
Waiting for response from the support group members...Thanks Ralph
This essentially means that if my iMac develops some problem (both software and hardware) in my country (India), it will be completeley attended (even the whole system requires replacement) by the AASP in India...is that what you say? -
Hello
I faced a problem when I tried to do the Tutorial "Using the Example Sinewave Model with a VxWorks CompactRIO Target".
My specifications are:
Software:
Win7 64-bit
Matlab 2010b with RTW (to compile the *.dll) (32-bit)
GNU-Toolchain 6.3 running in Virtual PC-XP-Mode (to generate the *.out)
Labview 2011 with Simulation Interface Toolbox 2011 (32-bit)
Hardware:
sbRIO-9631 (from Labview Embedded Platform Evaluation Kit)
I was able to compile a dll and an out file.
I created a custom fpga-Bitfile with the Tutorial "Creating a Custom FPGA Bitfile".
In a blank VI I made the Host-VI and with the SIT Connection Manager I created the Driver VIs.
Until here everything worked fine.
Now my problem appeared. As long as I don't create Hardware I/O Mappings my model runs fine on the sbRIO:
But when I try to map the in and out port of the model to a HW I/O I get this error:
What causes this error?
On my sbRIO following software is installed (followed this instruction: Configuring a Real-Time Target to Run the LabVIEW SIT Server)
Best regards
PatrickI have exctly the same issue. here is my error
my fpga for the bitfile

I am having doubts on the Intel Irish Pro 5200, dont know will it work fine for the latest versions of Photoshop and Lightroom and other Graphics software as this version is said to be the basic and was wondering if it would help for the type of work i do.
Nothing specific against the Iris Pro graphics ...
Just that it's the GPU in the lowest-end iMac model. The software you intend to use (Photoshop, Lightroom, etc) are resource intensive applications and the more powerful system you have the better they perform.
And there is more to performance than just the GPU ... CPU type/speed, VRAM, disk speed for starters. If your use of PS, LR etc. is light and you expect it to remain light, then maybe the low-end iMac will be fine. But if you are any kind of prosumer/power user I suspect you will quickly discover the performance limitations of the low-end model. I'd point you at least to the next model "up." -
I am a resident of Ecuador with an ecuadorian credit card.I used to buy applications from the us apple store and updated them whenever updates were available with no problem at all. Since approximately a month,I am not able to purchase any new applicaton or update the old ones.Apple send me back to the ecauadorian apple store were there are almost no applications and where I can not even update the ones I have.
How can I solve this problem.? Before I was able too purchase applications anywhere in the world. This is absurd.
Can anybody help me please?
Regards,
RefuriosoYou can't, you will need to be in the US with a US billing address (and credit card issued by a US bank) and iTunes account to be able to buy/download from the US store - the terms of use of the US store say (and other country's stores will be similar) :
The App and Book Services are available to you only in the United States, its territories, and possessions. You agree not to use or attempt to use the App and Book Services from outside these locations. Apple may use technologies to verify your compliance.
If there are apps that you want that aren't currently in the Ecuadorian store then you can try requesting that they be added, but ultimately it's the app developers that will have to grant Apple a license to sell them there : http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunes.html -
I am a average user, watch a lot of movies, play music, word processing, lots of internet browsing etc.
I am currently considering the following:
Refurbished 13.3-inch MacBook Pro 2.6GHz Dual-core Intel i5 with Retina Display
Originally released October 2013
13.3-inch (diagonal) Retina display; 2560-by-1600 resolution at 227 pixels per inch
8GB of 1600MHz DDR3L SDRAM
512GB Flash Storage1
720p FaceTime HD camera
Intel Iris Graphics
OR
Refurbished 13.3-inch MacBook Pro 2.9GHz Dual-core Intel Core i7 with Retina Display
Originally released October 2012
13.3-inch (diagonal) Retina display; 2560-by-1600 resolution at 227 pixels per inch
8GB of 1600MHz DDR3L SDRAM
512GB Flash Storage
720p FaceTime HD Camera
Intel HD Graphics 4000
They are both roughly the same price.I would tend to opt for the newer one. Even though the CPU specs suggest that the 2012 is faster, from a practical perspective you will be hard pressed to notice the difference in 'real' world conditions.

I am thinking of changing over from the "PC" system to an Imac. Presently we have Photoshop 7.0 and would like to know if we can cross change? and how much it would cost. I found trying to contact Adobe directly using a phone, very frustrating, if not impossible? I got caught up in an endless circle, even though I tried different.choices each time.
WayneI know that the program is old, however it was expensive to buy and I am really familiar with how it works, so that's why I would like to be able to do the cross over.
I don't work for Adobe but I can respond to a couple of your questions with certainty:
There is no upgrade (or crossgrade) path from Photoshop 7 Win to Photoshop 7 for Mac. That window closed many years ago.
Photoshop 7.0 will not run on modern Intel-based Macs. It was written for old PowerPC based Macs and the code will not run on Intel chips without Rosetta which is no longer available in current OS X operating systems.

it,s a 2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo
memory 2 GB 533 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
is there some kind of way i can upgrade that to a Intel Core Duo 2 processor
or is it just a batle i cant win ?You should be able to get a used or repaired MacBook 13/15-inch core2duo 2.0+GHz near
$350 or so, in working condition with some kind of limited warranty or guaranty. Companies
like macsales, wegenermedia, powerbookmedic, powermax and others offer previously
owned Macs that are not current models. Older, to vintage or obsolete; those who some-
times have the better deal on those also can repair most all Macs and have parts.
The effort to swap out a logic board (and then what? the
other parts likely won't match) isn't hardly worth the effort.
You may be able to find an early MacBook (circa 2006 to 2010 era) that needs minor work,
and troubleshoot/repair it with a DIY guide online... But that can be a gamble if you mess
up things that were not wrong in the first place, while learning on the job. It could cost plenty.
Some companies can sell you used parts, no guarantees on matching an incorrect logic
board with a diffferent build model spec computer's other original configuration. You'd do
better if you found someone selling their old MacBook Core2Duo, nearby, & could see it run.
I have a MacBook 13-inch coreduo 1.83GHz first-edition; an early core2duo won't do much
more than the coreduo. Snow Leopard is better than Lion in several ways; if you have older
software you already own that works, from the PowerPC era -- that can save you money.
Good luck in any event, & happy computing! -
IMac 21.5 inch- Better with a 1TB fusion drive or 16GB of ram?
Hello all.
I have decided to get an iMac. But, I need help on deciding what is a better upgrade. I am planning on dual booting windows and playing the video game: Battlefield 4. While this won't be for a while (I'd need to buy windows, then anti-virus blah blah blah....), I would like to know what is the better upgrade in the long run.
Thanks for the help.
M.Because ram in the 21.5 in model isn't user upgradable getting the maximum amount you can afford would be my choice.

Hi,
I've recently done a complete format of my OS and reinstalled it. I reinstalled all the drivers etc. such as the USB drivers/controllers and the new iTunes12. To confirm I have tried everything from this article (iPhone, iPad, or iPod not recognized in iTunes for Windows - Apple Support) along with my general knowledge and understanding of PC's but this one has stumped me.
Prior to my OS reinstall, My iPhone 5s used to show up as the appropriate device under "My computer" with the image being a Black iPhone 5s.
After the fresh install of Windows 7 and the drivers and iTunes12 I now have the problem of my iDevice showing as a blue camera as a "portable device".
If anyone can offer some advice or has come across this problem before it would be much appreciated if you could help me fix this problem. Here's a photo attachment to help you understand the issue (Ignore the names of the devices on each, I got both these images from the net).
Kind regards
Struthers88im not sure this is related but on my mac my various iPhones would show up in a similar way if i had photos on the phone that needed to be imported to the mac - i dont know what application is used on a PC to import photos (and there may be a setting in iTunes to automatically import them when the iPhone is connected to the PC)
I know Dropbox offers to import photos every time i connect my Iphone to my mac - but if dismiss the offer iTunes comes up with the iPhone listed properly
but if you do have photos on the Iphone that have not yet been imported to the PC you might try importing them and see if that helps -

Have any of you seen the 17-inch models in Apple Stores?
I am sooo ready to pull the trigger, but I'd kind of like to see one in person.
As of last weekend (Jan 24) my local Apple Store did not have them.On a serious note, I called both Tysons Corner, VA and Fair Oaks Mall in Fairfax, VA and was told that they have no clue when they will obtain the shipment. I ordered mine custom configured on January 6, 2008 and it's expected to ship on February 4, 2009. We will see.
My Blue and White G3 is ready for retirement. It turned 10 years old on January 29th. -
I'm not sure if buying an iMac would be worth it, and if so, 20 inch or 17?
Hello all. I'm a new user. A friend of mine has a 17 inch Imac that be purchased before the Intel's came out.
Now I am a pretty large PC user, but whenever I go over to his house, and use his mac, it just feels so user friendly and great, that it makes me want to purchase one.
One of the main reasons I want to buy a Mac is the fact that I am big into audio recording. I see all the studios and serious audio recorders use macs. This enticed my want for one as well.
Secondly, I am looking into to getting into video editing. My friend with the iMac uses final cut pro, and I have used it on his and it's great.
I do a fair bit of gaming on my current PC, which my brother built. Unfortunately he's taking it to college at the end of the summer.
So I think to myself, I could contiune playing elder scrolls IV on a mac, and have great audio and video capabilties.
So as I browse this forum, I don't have that big of a budget. $1300 was a push for me to buy the lowest possible imac. However I read something about the 17 incher sucking at gaming because of the weak GPU.
I don't know if its worth it to look at the 20 inch model, or just stick with the 17 inch one and hope it holds.
I want to make the jump from PC to Mac, but my entire family are big PC people, and i just don't know. Can someone recommend me a mac, and reassure that I seem to be making the right move?
Thanks, if you read all that.Given your budget, have you considered a secondhand G4 tower? You'd have the upgrade potential that the iMac's design doesn't permit. Then you could run dual internal hard drives, select your graphics card, and have PCI slots for any expansion cards your audio and/or video projects might require. The iMacs are great right out of the box, but if you're someone who'd like the flexibility to customize your computer for specific needs, I'd consider something like the 2002 G4 MDD model. Why not post your question in the G4 Expansion Forum, and see what advice/suggestions you receive from other G4 owners? Of course, you'd need to get a display, but then again, there are plenty of CRT or LCD models to choose from. If you've got a decent display for a PC, you can use it with the Mac.

I recently purchased an old iMac G3 Macintosh. I was wondering, is there a way where I can update it without using an external disc? I've seen the newer Apple products with the dock, if I update my iMac G3, will it have that, and if so, how can I do that?
I was wondering, is there a way where I can update it without using an external disc?
If you mean the iMac does not have an internal optical drive capable of reading DVDs, the only option requires another Mac with a DVD-capable drive and FireWire ports. Your iMac G3 will also require FireWire ports. Not all G3 iMacs have Firewire. FW started with the Summer 2000 models with 400mHz and faster processors.
With FireWire, you can use FireWire Target Disk mode to install from a retail OS install DVD in another Mac. If you supplemental info info tells us if you have another Mac with a DVD reader and the FW ports, we can walk you through the process.
If the iMac has a tray-loading drive, I'd forget it. They are very limited not only in the OS max (10.3.9) but also in RAM capability. Starting with the slot-loading iMac G3s, the max RAM increased to 1 GB (2 X 512MB modlules). Tiger likes 1GB RAM.
Understand that pre-Intel Macs are getting harder to use. Even with 10.4.11, your choice of browsers is limited (TenFourFox is the most viable option) and the G3s rudimentary video hardware means web browsing will be choppy at best.
If you are in the USA, you can try calling the Apple Store (1-800-MY-APPLE) for an OS disk. As recently as Jan 20, someone posted here that they were able to buy Tiger by calling. It was not clear whether the disks were replacement system install/restore disks or full retail install, but it's a free call.
When you do "About this Mac" to check teh OS verion, also look at the processor speed and tell us what that says. That can help with recommendations for an upgrade path. -
Is it better to buy the cheapest Pro model and customize it?
I'm thinking about buying a MacBook Pro, although I will be waiting for the upgrade everyone has been talking about. Right now, it looks as if it's cheaper to customize the $1199 model to have the same specs as the $1499 model. Upgrading the $1199 model to 4GB of RAM and a 250GB hard drive brings the total to $1349. Is the processor speed between these two models that big of a difference (2.26 vs. 2.53)? Basically I'm asking if it's better to upgrade the base model or just buy the more expensive model with the same specs. It certainly seems cheaper.
Depends on what you use your computer for, tensocfan.
If you use your Mac for CPU intensive stuff then the extra 10% in CPU speed may be useful and you can't upgrade it later. If not then go with the hip pocket nerve.
Cheers

I have looked on the board for this problem, and have found a few similarities, but none that actually match my case. So, here goes... First of all, my iPod: he is a very old 20GB iPod, a gift from Christmas 2003, and I have been considering replacin
