Buying an iPad as a gift for someone in the UK (advice)

Hi,
I'm planning on buying my brother an iPad for his birthday but he lives in the UK. The US iPad works out $200 cheaper than the UK version so I was thinking of sending him one from over here.
What potential problems would he face if I did that? He's not very technologically minded and don't want him stuck with problems he can't solve!

Yes. Apple or a certified Apple retailer. Any other source may be bogus. With the Apple SIM you don't need to decide what carrier at time of purchase. However, Apple only supports AT&T, Sprint, Verizon, and T-Mobile. Of course you can also buy it from your chosen provider if they support and sell them.
I suggest you visit Apple's online store to see what you need. It's well explained. I just bought one two days ago.

You will not be able to complete your order through the Apple Online Store, because the carriers require that you have the mobile number, account number, last 4 of SSN & password for account or any combination of a few of those criteria. The best solution Apple can generally offer is that you purcahse a Gift Card and allow the recipient to purchase the iPhone themselves. I understand that it is not the same, but I can tell you from personal experience that the reaction is equally as satisfying.

Gift for someone in the U.S, payment problems...

I have a problem since I want to buy a gift for a family member that lives in the us and pay it with my Swedish card. It said that the billing address must be within the US, is it possible to write the family members address or does the credit card need to be registered on the address? Is there any solution to this or can I just write my home address in Sweden as billing dress? I will be using the pick it up system so the shipping won’t be a problem. Haven't been able to find a good answer.

To be able to gift to somebody in the US (and who therefore must be using the US iTunes store), you will have to be in the US and have a US iTunes account (which means having a US billing address, and a US issued payment method ; you can't use credit card issued by a bank in a different country).

Gift certificate is your only option at this time. There is no way to transfer the ownership or a song or buy a song and have it show up in someone else's account.

Stores only have gift cards, and because I live in a different country to the person I want to send one to, that isn't practical. Installing itunes, seems excessive, especially as I would first have to install wine on linux, just to buy a gift for someone.

Welcome to the Apple Community.
You can only locate your device when it is logged into iCloud and 'Find My Phone' is enabled, additionally the device will need to be switched on and connected to a wifi or cellular network.
Unfortunately, you cannot activate iCloud or 'Find My Phone' remotely.
If the device is wiped by you or another, you may not be able to locate the device (although some have reported they can)

You can copy the app to your computer's iTunes library by connecting the phone to it and doing File > Devices > Transfer Purchases - an actual backup (either on your computer's iTunes or to the cloud) doesn't contain the actual apps, just their content and settings, for a restore to work the app needs to be either in your computer's iTunes library (for and iTunes backup/restore) or still in the store (for an iCloud backup/restore). Or you could just sync the app from your computer's iTunes (which will only install the app, not any previous content)

can anyone give a good contact number for someone in the upper level of customer care i have talked to two of the worst people from customer service, the "supervisor" who was very appropriate did give me a address to mail a complaint which i will but being a disabled veteran of the Iraq war and a member of the wounded warrior project i get upset at certain people who show no respect for the average person and even worse of an attitude to those injured serving their country. I'm in no way saying I'm better its just that i expect a grain of respect as a person, a fellow American working everyday just to get by. my issue was not an impossible issue to resolve but i was told by one rep that it was not possible after my call being "dropped" i called back and talked to another. Luke from call center Washington state told me it was possible but that the phone i ordered two days prior (that rep failed to finish the order)was no longer available and i could pick a different phone not on back order.......i mentioned my confusion to the lack of service and being told two separate things. i asked why this was when i was not the one who made the mistake he told me it was not there fault and pushed the blame to me....he then called me dude and started to speak over me. when i asked to speak to a supervisor he asked why i told him i was no longer interested in talking to him he said why, i asked to be transferred again he kept refusing saying listen man I'm trying to help you what do you want. i asked to speak to his supervisor at least three more times he refused. i asked for his employee information so i could call back to report his rude behavior he refused to give me anything except at the end he finally told me his name.. there is more but my hand is tired is there anyone who can help me? if i find an answer as i will be posting this to many sites i will post it here.
