I own a MacBook from 2008 and an iPad from 2011, I am a loyal apple customer. I have never doubted my choice to be a life long apple user, until today. I have been planning on buying an iPhone 4 when my current cellphone plan runs out, but today I updated my iPad to the iOS 6 and I HATE it. I'm curious to know if I were to buy an iPhone 4, would I automatically be forced onto iOS 6, or could I choose the one before that? This will influence my choice to buy an iPhone at all. I am incredibly disappointed with the map app and would rather look into a completely different phone than be annoyed on a daily basis with the iPhone, which I know can be a better device than it is today.

If you buy from Apple (do they even sell iPhone 4 any more?) or a cellular carrier, you will almost certainly get iOS 6. Whatever it is that you don't like about iOS 6 is very likely to improve soon. If it were me, I wouldn't hesitate to go that route.

Being able to run multiple appropriate SIM cards on different carriers would be really helpful.

I'm wondering if apple would let you buy an iphone but not activate the phone for now? If that's the case, will one be able to still use the ipod capability? I remember when I got my iphone, I can't really do anything with it unless it was activated but I could be wrong. Anyone? Thanks!

Without hacking it, you would have to activate it to get the iPod function.
You can buy the product. You activate it at home, not the store.
If you just want an iPod you have 2 choices. Wait until the end of the month until the iPod Touch comes out, or pick up an iPhone, activate it through iTunes, and then call AT&T and tell them you'd like to cancel the service.
The iPhone will then be active without the Phone feature.

iOS 3 is a better OS than iOS 4 for 3G.
iOS 4 for 3G is for you to suffer and buy an iPhone 4. iOS was designed for iPhone 4 technically and commercialy.
There are places on the web with detailed instructions on how to downgrade from iOS 4 to iOS 3.

I'm with DaVBMan and Allan. I mean sure you can buy an iPhone without immediately signing up with AT&T but expect to pay around $700-$800 for the phone if you go this route. If you plan to go with AT&T right after your T-Mobile contract is up, you'll pay only $200-$300 (depends if you buy 16gb or 32gb) for the phone, so just wait for four months and buy that time, you should be able to get an iPhone with ease.

im getting really frusterated. I am from canada living in china and want to buy an iphone from hong kong. I spent alot of time trying to reserve one only to find out that If I am not a scalper it is impossible. Scalpers use a program here to find out when the iphones will go on sale at the online store and then automaticly reserves as many as they want with in seconds. Whats more sad is that there are people who are able to purchase many times with the same apple id. You can get an iPhone unlocked without a contract, but they are a lot more expensive (16GB iPhone 4s is 649 out of contract). However, you will have to pay monthly if you want to take advantage of 3G cellular data.

1 You can buy the iPhone without a contract, at full price, multiple carriers have it. You will pick the carrier you want when you buy the phone. You don't have to activate it, but why buy a phone you can't use?
2) You can buy the phone and activate it with the carrier, and get the discounted contract price.
