Buying an ipod soon, are my songs formats compatible?

hi, i really need your help, iim thinking bout buying an ipod video 30gb but i've got one problem, almost all the music i own is downloaded, stored on my computer on real one player as real system media. i have thousands of songs stored in this format, an im worried that if i buy an ipod, i wont be able to play my music on it! i really need some help as i'd love to be able to listen to my music collection somewhere other than from the computor! i downloaded itunes, but that doesn't convert my files, is there anything i can do to fix this im desperate! thanks!

Have you ever used "Real players' built in burner to "Backup" your music up to CD?
Once this is done, your CD's can be imported to Itunes and an IPOD. Tagging might be an issue. The CD may not contain the Album, Artist information once you import to Itunes. You'll have to see. You can always retag them.

  • TWO ipods that are skipping songs

I am yet to read a definitive answer to this problem:
    you all know it:
my fiancees fifth gen ipod is skipping parts or entire songs... She did not have this problem on the third gen ipod.
she ALSO has an ipod shuffle... the songs are now doing the same thing on the shuffle...
I am not sure how the files could have become corrupted spontaneously..
we are running the latest versions of itunes and the latest software on the ipod.
will try restoring both ipods do anything?
how about reinstalling itunes? maybe something happened when it tried the catalog the music??
    what are your thoughts?

Well there is no garentee but I would try to restore both iPods with the 2005-10-12 updater...
That seems to work about 75% of the time...
    if not then:
Format the iPod using your computer then restore
If that does not work then maybe they need serviced

  • Itunes puts songs on ipod but eject ipod there are no songs/movies

My 5th generation 60gb ipod was working fine. I ejected the ipod and went to go listen to the songs, but everything was gone. All music and videos gone. I plugged it back into the computer and sure enough all the files were gone. So I re uploaded the songs to my ipod and it shows that they are one the ipod within itunes, but when I eject it there is nothing on my ipod? *!!! Any help on this one.

Newbie, the only way you will be able to resolve a capacity conflict like the one you seem to be having is to restore your iPod. Here's a link on how to restore if you need some help.

  • Why are the songs I've deleted off my Ipod grayed out?

I've deleted the songs manually off my ipod, as there is an option to do so. However, when I click into my songs on the Ipod, there are the songs that I had already deleted and are grayed out. They won't play-because I've deleted them. I've gone as far as deleting them off my Itunes and computer all together. The grayed out songs are still there and will not go away! Has anyone else had this problem and been able to fix it?

Depending upon what country that you are in you might be able to re-download them via the Purchased link under Quick Links on the right-hand side of the iTunes store home page on your computer's iTunes : re-downloading.

  • IPod and iTunes - Duplicate song file problem

I have many songs on my iPod that are the same. Is there an easy way to do a search and delete of all duplicate songs in one easy step, either thru the iPod itself, or iTunes?
Thanks in advance for your help!
    Keith in MI

You can delete songs through the iPod on the iPod.
Are these songs in your iTunes library as well? You can go to edit-->show duplicates and then delete one of each copy.
There is no automatic way of doing this on Windows.

  • IPod Classic 80GB Skipping songs

    Hello there,
I am facing a trouble with my iPod, there are some songs that it keeps skipping, see, it starts playing the song, and every time at the same second of the music, it just skips the song and goes to the next one of the list.
It doesn't happen with all songs, it happens only with the SAME files, and I can say that these files are NOT corrupted, cause they play normaly on my pc AND, if I press and hold the forward key on the iPod to pass through the moment that the song is skipped, it plays the rest of the song without any problem, so, it happens only in an exact spot of the file, does anyone knows what's happening?
Hope you've understood me, my english is not so good.
    Thanks for helping.

I have the same problem on my ipod 80gb classic that I purchased recently. It is VERY annoying that many files have this skipping problem on the ipod but play perfectly fine on my other mp3 players (creative/sansa etc) and on itunes...
The problem is, there is no way to know in advance which songs in your collection (huge) will skip. When I had been to the local apple store for help, they suggested that one possibility is for me to re-encode all my 80gb of music, how wonderful?? And they also started trying to give vague justifications like DRM protection issues that can cause this...asking me to reinstall itunes quick time etc...crap.
Added to this is the scroll wheel which is not so responsive...
I had some respect for apple products, and used to have the opinion they do a few (only) things but do it perfectly... but that feeling is gone, big disappointment.

  • While travelling in the U.S.A I purchased an app store card for my IPOD which was bought in Canada.  I am having trouble redeeming the card on my IPOD, it is coming up not valid.  Are these two items compatible?

While travelling in the US I purchased and app store card for my IPOD touch which was bought in Canada.  I am have trouble reddeming the card on my IPOD.  Are these two items compatible?

Gift cards can only be used in the App/iTunes store in the country in which they were purchased. You can only purchase items from the store of the country you are physically located.

  • My 2nd gen iPod touch's music app will crash as soon as a song is selected while headphones are plugged in.

It will crash as soon as a song is selected while headphones are plugged in. It won't even go to the Now Playing screen; it will just hang on the highlighted song for a few seconds and then crash. Works fine when nothing is plugged in, though. Sometimes it will work completely fine, but after restoring the iPod, the problem seems to have worsened after a day of perfect operation.
The iPod was a gift from a friend, and he had it for a while, so I don't think there's a warranty on it anymore. Help please??

If you only restored from backup try restoring to factory defaults/new iPod. If you still have the problem then an appointment at the Genius Bar of ab Apple store is in order since you appear to have a hardware problem. The apointment is free.

  • I want to buy a Ipod Nano 16gb and it says it holds up to 4,000 songs, and 16 hours of video but on my Itunes I have 2,593 songs and it says I have 19.88 gb. How is this possible?

I want to buy a Ipod Nano 16gb that says it holds up to 4,000 songs, 16 hours of video, and 14,000 pictures. On my Itunes Library, I have 2,593 songs and it says I have 19.88 gb just of songs. How is this possible? If I buy the Nano, will I not be able to have all my songs on the ipod? The music is my first and only prioarity. I want to be able to have up to at least 3,000 songs, even if that means not having video or pictures. Can someone please help me?

    Daniella,
The estimated song capacities, such as 4000 songs in 16 GB, are based on 4 minute songs of 4 MB each, which is what you get at 128 encoding.
Most of us nowadays use well above 128.  (For example, the iTunes Store and Amazon MP3 both sell songs only in 256.)
However, you can still make more songs fit!  When you sync your iPod, use the option to "convert higher bit rate songs," as pictured.  Choose 128.  This fits more on the iPod, but does not change the songs in your library.

  • Here's the exact scenario with it: 1) Ipod connected successfully to iTunes. 2) Drag song from Library(in AAC format) to My Ipod. 3) Song plays successfully in iTunes. BTW: This is one of the songs from my cd. Not bought. 4) Eject Ipod. 5) Find song in

Here's the exact scenario with it:
    1) Ipod connected successfully to iTunes.
    2) Drag song from Library(in AAC format) to My Ipod.
    3) Song plays successfully in iTunes.
BTW: This is one of the songs from my cd. Not bought.
    4) Eject Ipod.
    5) Find song in Ipod and press play.
    6) Display for song and time appear.
    7) About 1/3 of a second of the song plays, then it cuts out and restarts itself. (boots me back to apple logo)

Nope - and it was set to not look for them.
The final clue came when I tried hooking the drive directly to the computer, instead of to the airdisk. iTunes still hung. Then I disconnected the drive and tried to run it, and iTunes came up right away - but with an ! next to each song. Clearly it was trying to find/touch every file in the library on first startup.
I didn't try plugging in the drive and leaving the hanging iTunes running for more than a few minutes, so it's possible that it would have recovered and launched. But after removing the XML file, restoring the library to my pre-7.7 version, I could hear it accessing the directly attached drive (and see it in disk activity in the monitor) for a few minutes (less than I'd left the hanging one trying), before it came up.
    Conclusion:
    1) 7.7 is definitely trying to touch/see all the files in the library on first launch (proved by the ! when they are missing).
    2) Disconnecting/interrupting the touch/see MAY have corrupted something (can't prove it).
    3) Since touching 10,000 files takes a LONG time even at 802.11n speeds (let alone b or g), it's worth the hassle to plug the drive in directly for the first time.
    4) Patience is a virtue

  • How do I transfer my music from my ipod to my laptop? I have Windows 7 and using the newest itunes update. These are all songs that were burned from cd's and such and weren't actually purchased through itunes.

I try to play a song but an exclamation point shows up saying the file could not be located. They play on my 1st gen video ipod just fine. It does that with more than half of my songs. Originally I had my songs in an external hard drive but the HDD fell once and since then it hasn't been connecting to my laptop. Now the songs that I used to have back then won't play on my itunes unless u plug in the HDD which my laptop won't detect. Is there a way for me to transfer my working songs to my itunes from my ipod so they'll all play again? im getting ready to buy and ipod touch but it's not good if most of my songs don't transfer because of the "missing files".

    Tarantulaman wrote:
i do, but like i said it fell once and since then it hasn't been able to connect to my laptop. it acts like nothing's connected. i believe if i call the company the HDD is from they'll be able to transfer it to a new one but who knows how much they'd charge. looks like i have no choice now.
If it were truly a backup, then the media would play on the laptop as it would be on the laptop.
Sounds like you actually do not have a backup, instead you chose to keep your media on an external drive.
Regardless of where the media is stored, it's always a good idea to have a backup for instances like this.

    Hi Craig
Unfortunately, in your case, there isn't really a way to separate them as far as I can think.
You could try restoring from a backup, and choosing an older backup perhaps

  • My IPod no longer shuffles songs within playlists that are clearly set to shuffle.  It is about 3/4 full so I thought of maybe compressing the files to get more space.  Do you think that is the problem and if that might help?

My IPod no longer shuffles songs within playlists that are clearly set to shuffle.  It is about 3/4 full so I thought of maybe compressing the files to get more space.  Do you think that is the problem and if that might help?

Storage space on the iPod would not affect shuffled playlists or playlist shuffling, though substantially full iPods may wind up skipping songs on larger playlists after a while, and require a restart.  As for compressing the files themselves, you can automatically re-encode files to a lower bitrate by checking the box on the summary page when your iPod is connected to your PC/Mac.
As for the shuffle problem, after restarting your iPod (hold the center button and Menu for a few seconds, until the Apple logo appears), make sure you're telling the iPod to shuffle the songs in a playlist by repeatedly clicking the center button until the Suffle Menu comes up, then scroll to the right to turn it on.  From that song forward, the playlists' contents should be shuffled every time the playlist ends, or is accessed from a new song.
Shuffle does sometimes turn itself off, I've found, so double-check the setting is still on.  Also, iPods shuffle by randomly assigning a playlist order for your songs, which is different from traditional shuffle (on, say, iTunes or Windows Media Player, where the new song is determined at random upon the current track ending.  The iPod only chooses a random order of songs when you shuffle, to conserve battery life and queue up songs coming up on the playlist in the event of a shock).

  • Brand new nano: iTunes shows songs on the ipod that the ipod thinks are not

I first upgraded the firmware on my new 8GB nano, and upgraded my iTunes version, and then uploaded about 4 GB of music.
But I have this weird bug:
For a few artists, iTunes correctly shows their songs as being on the ipod, but then when I browse to the artist on my ipod, only 1 of the 3 songs are there. 2 songs are missing, even though iTunes definitely thinks they're on the ipod. I've tried deleting them and reuploading, but they still don't show up on the nano.
The missing songs are just standard mp3s, and play fine on my computer. There's no difference between the 2 missing ones and the 1 that does show up that I can tell.
Also, another bug is that the nano is displaying one of my artists twice in the Artist listing, even though the name is exactly identical. This is what is shows:
    The Cruxshadows
    Cruxshadows
    The Cruxshadows
The 2nd entry is because I have one song which has a different artist name in the ID3 tags. But entries 1 and 3 are exactly identical - clicking on them brings me to the same exact set of songs.
I never had these bugs with my iPod mini. Are these known bugs in the nano firmware?
      Windows Vista

"For a few artists, iTunes correctly shows their songs as being on the ipod, but then when I browse to the artist on my ipod,"
There are usually two things that contribute to songs not appearing under Artist on the iPod, both due to information either in or missing from the Get Info>Info tab against the song in iTunes. 1) the song has no album name associated with it or 2) the song is marked as part of a compilation.
If tracks are missing an Album name in the Info tab, this information needs to be filled in. The no album one is a bit quirky as the songs will appear under certain circumstances but the simplest remedy is just add None or Miscellaneous to all the blanks in place of a title. See this link for more detail: I don't see some of my songs when browsing by artist on my iPod
Also if the tracks are ticked in the Get Info>Info tab as part of a compilation, they will not appear under Artist on the iPod. Highlight a song in iTunes that you know is not appearing correctly on your iPod. Right click on it and choose Get Info and click the Info tab (alternatively choose Get Info from the File menu), if "Part of a Compilation" is marked untick it and afterwards update your iPod, you should find it now appears as normal. Compilations are stored in a separate folder in iTunes so the songs don't appear inside the normal Artist>Album folder.
