Buying apps with gift card?

Hi,
It is possible to buy an Itunes Gift Card and use it to download apps for my Iphone rather than music? I didn't want to register using my Credit Card # for an Itunes account, so thought i'd try a gift card, will it work, or is it only for music and not app store? I have credit in my account balance at top right of Itunes but cannot get it to work.

Microsoft points are not represented or classified as a gift card.
Why would Apple on their own NOT want people to use gift cards to purchase apps. "Oh please Canadians, we have enough money we don't want yours so we won't let you buy any apps."

It says there is a problem with my payment information and prompts me to change payment info but I am only able to change it to another type of cc not gift card balance

I don't want the cards if I can't use them to buy apps, so how do I get my money back? They sell the cards with the presumption that you can use them to buy anything thru itunes but after they are redeemed and you try to use them, they don't work! I want a refund!

it is well covered on the net and in the TOU for iTunes Canada and in Apple online store (iTunes section).

I suspect you live in Canada. iTunes gift cards can only be used for music & video in Canada. Apps need a credit card.

Perhaps if you provide more detail than just "won't allow me" someone can offer suggestions. As it is, you've not given us anything like enough information on which to do more than guess.

Won't let me buy apps with credit card

Every time I try to buy an app it says that the session timed out. I'm connected to a credit card. It won't let me download the app.

What does "it won't let me mean"? It's much more helpful if you actually tell us what is happening when you try to use the card.
Did you redeem the card properly in the App Store or in iTunes - at the bottom of the screen in the main tab of either app?

I had the same error when trying to update my apps on my ipod touch. I tried to input my security code numerous times to no avail. I also made sure my billing address was the same as what my bank had on file. To fix the issue I went into iTunes, logged onto the iTunes store, went to account settings and reviewed my recent purchases. Turned out that I had made a recent purchase and didn't have enough money left on my credit card to pay for it at the time. I paid off the credit card, and then input my security code once more and now it works fine. I've heard that some debit or pay as you go credit cards require a minimum balance, so make sure you have at least that amount in your account.

I bought gift cards for myself and my family so we could download apps onto our iPads. The gift cards had the the little triangle emblem just like the App Store icon on our iPads.
But nowhere on the iPad App Store is there a method to redeem the gift cards. Phone Support just told me that I have purchased the wrong gift cards and that they are non-transferable.
So if I want to buy an iWork app, I must purchase an iTunes gift card? But I don't want to download music and I don't select the app from iTunes...I select it from the App Store
And if I buy the gift card with the App Store triangle emblem then that card is only good at the online retail store and not for apps?
It seems somewhat absurd to have 3 virtual storefronts (App, Online Retail, iTunes) that cannot take each others gift cards. Why can't Apple be as easy as Amazon? One gift card works everywhere.
Is there any way to use our gift cards to download for-pay apps? Or should I recover my money by disputing the purchase with my credit card company?

I took my iPad, my case #, my iPhone, and a printout of this thread to my local Apple store. What ultimately worked was to redeem the online store gift card through my iPhone Passbook and use the money to buy an iTunes gift card. Then I redeemed the iTunes gift card.
Not sure this will work with the gift cards I gave as presents and, if I lacked an iPhone (like my mother lacks) then I would have been S.O.L. Apparently the emailed online store gift cards are incompatible (no GCA code). Something for Apple to fix. Not having Passbook on iPad is another thing.

I know you can link your credit card to your Ipad, go to the app strore and go to the bottom and tap apple Id and sighn in then go to payment information and you can set up a credit card. Hope this helps

The gift card is restricted to use in the Mac App Store and the iTunes Stores. It will not buy Apple hardware on the Apple Store website.

My sister and I have been having problems with our ipods. We both have the touch and because our dad bought both our ipods and our ipods were under the same name it was starting to sync eachothers music to each ipod instead of seperate. we also wanted to use 2 different credit cards. so we thought the best solution would be to just create her, her own account. Everything went smoothly and i realized there was an option to not add a credit card, being that shes under aged and only buys with gift cards anyway. Now im struggling because i entered her gift cards into her acount and every time she goes to buy a song it says confirm or varify billing information. I have tried re entering her account info, i tried adding a credit card, ive tried several things and it is not allowing me to varify the account and will tell me that my requist is unavailable at this time....
does anyone know how to fix this problem soo she can buy songs
