Buying correct type of DVD for copying VHS tapes:

Will my MacBookPro -- late 08, (model 5.1) burn DVDRW (rewrite) or do I have to stick with the one-shot DVD? I prefer the RW but store clerk said if I open package I can't return and exhange for the one-shot type. Help.

DVD-RW media is useful for certain applications (read: short-term data storage), but I would not recommend them for video purposes. They are not as stable over time and will not have the life that good quality DVD-R media have. They also cost more than DVD-R media and there is also some question of how well (or not) they will play in ordinary DVD players.
May I suggest +Verbatim DataLife Plus DVD-R+ or DVD+R media. They are reasonably priced, are available in silver or white inkjet-printable versions; single-layer and dual-layer. I have been using them for years and not one has failed to burn or play.

  • How to dub (copy) VHS tapes to DVDs (DVR670KU)

Josh @ Toshiba Tech Support (800-631-3811) gave these instructions which worked for us.  Note: first VHS tape we tried ejected immediately.  Second VHS tape we tried stayed in and dubbing worked.
    - turn DVR670KU on
    - press DVD button
    - press Input Select button and choose "L1"
    - insert blank DVD
    - press Rec Mode button and choose mode (ex: SP)
    - press VCR button
    - insert VHS tape
    - press Play button
    - press Pause button
    - press Dubbing button
    - unit automatically begins VCR to DVD dubbing and displays "DB" on front panel
    - press Stop button when done

Note that I'm not Josh. I'm not a Toshiba employee.
Are you saying that you followed the steps in the original post, up to and including
"Press Dubbing button" and the VHS tape did not begin playing? If so, did you get
any kind of notification on the screen? The VHS tape should have been in pause mode,
and should start playing once the DVD Dubbing button is pressed on the remote.
Are you trying to dub a commercial tape? (which you can't do with the Toshiba DVR620 and
    DVR670)
What type of recordable DVD are you using? DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW? And it's
    either blank or unfinalized?
Can you play the tape when you are not in a DVD dubbing situation? That is, just insert
the VHS tape, press the VCR button on the remote, then press Play on the remote?

  • Copying VHS tapes to Hard Drive for editing in iMovie

OK, so I have old home videos on VHS tapes; I was going to burn them all to DVD, but found that they cannot be edited and I understand ripping them will degrade the quality (and we're working with VHS -- not the best quality to begin with!) So, I learned there is a way "analog digital capture" where I can transfer the VHS tapes onto a hard drive, then edit in iMovie.
I know I could pay for a transfer house to do it, but I think it would be wiser financially to invest in the device I need to do it myself.
I don't entirely understand what I need to buy, or how to do it, does anyone know what I am asking and what to do? Thank you so much!

I am using a JVC DR MV-150 VHS DVD recorder which dubs directly.
The results look better than the originals.
Some problems with "finalizing" the DVDs, but I managed to push a series of buttons and got there. It is not what JVC says in their manual and found something on line which was wrong as well, but a combination got me there.
It is one touch, load in tape, load in blank DVD and push dubbing. Machine initializes the DVD and then transfers, at the end you go through a process to "finalize" the DVD and done.
Cost me $200 at Sma's Club.
You can also take semi full tapes and pause the dubbing and put in a new VHS tape and record a "New" chapter.
All in all I like it. It has better quality than going from VHS to computer, I assume they have some sort of a chip in the machine to make this better.

  • Is this the correct type of Ram for a mac mini?

I have a 2007 Mac mini, and want to go from 1gig to 2 gigs of Ram.
    I currently have 2 512's
I need to know 2 things. (i'm pretty sure on both but i'm not a huge hardware guy to bare with me)
    1. Will there be any compatibility problems? I.e if i upgrade to 2 gigs will it even help or because the rest of the computer is not being upgraded will it be useless?
    2. If i'm good to go, Is this the correct type of Ram? http://www.crucial.com/store/mpartspecs.aspx?mtbpoid=4E665783A5CA7304
Not sure if these are needed but will post anyway:

    Thank you in advance <3

    NO, it will NOT work.
You have to find the memory specific for Mac, and rule of thumb, Mac Intel chips usually take "ECC" memory. On occasions, You can get away with Non-ECC (on certain PPC Power Mac G5 towers) -- You can check on-line stores, like Newegg, Tigerdirect, or Goolge search for the Mac Mini memory. I got mine (for my two Mac 2,1) on line, and I put 4G (2x 2G), although only 3G was available.
It is worth of upgrade it. just need to find the right memory.

after installing the Mavericks, my IDVD don't work, can someone help about this ?
also, did you know if DVD studio pro its available for sale ? if yes, where's can I buy  ?
    thanks

Apple discontinued DVD Studio Pro three/four years ago. You can probably find copies from private sellers, but whether it will work without problems on OS X 10.9 I don't know. I don't know of any "professional" alternative to DVDSP for Mac, but someone else here may be able to offer suggestions.
As to iDVD, it should work under Mavericks, depending on what version of iDVD you're running. You might ask for assitance in the iDVD forum. For alternatives to iDVD, see this page for suggestions:

  • HT1103 Is there a particular type of DVD for this?  My slideshow also has music so I want that to play as well.

Is there a particular type of DVD that I need to buy to burn a slideshow with music from IPhoto?

Do you want the disk to play in a DVD player on a TV set?  If so you will have to use iDVD to create and burn the disk.  Export the slideshow to the Movie folder at the large size.
Next open iDVD, create a project and select a theme.  Then drag the slideshow movie file into the menu's window being careful to avoid any dropzones.
Follow this workflow to help ensure the best quality final product:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the  File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option.  This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
Note:  if you don't have iDVD on your MBP then you'll have to purchase the iLife 11 disc from a 3rd party retailer like Amazon.com: iLife 11. That's because Apple doesn't offer it any more.

  • Using DVD made from VHS tape (sound only) - won't load

A few years ago I transferred my classical music collection from reel-to-reel tape and LPs to VHS tapes. These worked very well in a VCR.
Now I tried to load the contents of these DVDs insto the IPOD via ITUNES. They were not recognized, however. The DVDs were DVD-R and DVD-RW.
Is there any way a get this material into an IPOD>

    I am confused.
You went reel to reel to VHS tapes-suddenly you switch to talking about DVD's?
iTunes does not recognize audio DVD's(I think, I know it will not burn them).
Since for the most part audio DVD's were/are a flop, I don't know of any program that would recognize them.

  • Trying to copy VHS tape using PINNACLE MOVIE BOX to FCE 4

    Hello,
New to FCE and trying to transfer VHS tapes to clean up and movie them.
The salesperson in the local Apple Store suggesting using FCE and Pinnacle MovieBox. I connect an VCR using the RCA cables to the Pinnacle, then Firewaire to my MBP. Using FCE as per instructions and forums, Capture and hit "Now".
It starts to transfer and then stops with "Locating TIme Code Break Press Esc to Stop". Then stops.
I've tried setting clips, but get other errors, about not able to find the start points.
It's a basic non-audio VHS I would like to transfer from start to 2 hour finish.
Imovie 08 works, but can I transfer it in to FCE with out loss of quality. THe sales guy felt I should use FCE.
Can it be done, am I doing something wrong. I basically want to transfer it while I attend to something else. Do not want to watch all these VHS tapes.
    Thanks,
    Art

    Hi,
when you use that DV converter setup, is your device already connected and working?
Can you see it listed using the system profile under the firewire devices?
I have a Canopus device which does the same kind of video conversions and it works fine on FCE4 using the DV PAL converter (in my case I work with PAL).
Have you tried direct connection with the firewire port of your mac (that's if you are using some sort of chain connection through a disk firewire hub)?
I have noticed my Canopus did have some trouble when it was connected through a firewire hub on an external disk. Now it's on a dedicated firewire hub and it works fine.

  • Correct preset for video captured from VHS tape

I have bought a cable which connects to my PC USB slot and has red, white and yellow component connections to connect to my (old) VCR or Video-8 format camera.  It comes with software called ArcSoft ShowBiz that allows me to capture the footage.  I have used it for both VHS tapes and Video-8 tapes.  The only options I have when capturing are the filename and a choice of MPEG1 and MPEG2, with MPEG1 being the default.
I have successfully captured footage (in MPEG1 format) and now I want to edit it in PE10.  The trouble is I do not know what preset to use.  The VHS tapes were in PAL format.  If I open a project as DV PAL and add the footage to the timeline it has a red line above it, which I assume means I will lose resolution when I render.  The quality is already not great and I don't want to make it worse.
    Any advice would be appreciated.

Most likely that footage will not work well or look good in Premiere Elements. The capture device you're using is a low-end digitizer and likely came with some software for editing (ArcSoft Shopbiz). It's designed to work pretty exclusively with that software.
MPEG1 is a very low quality format.
You can try using the project settings for Hard Disk Camcorder/Standard Defintion for that footage -- but I make no guarantees about the quality.
The best device for capturing analog video is a DV bridge, like the Canopus AVDC, as we discuss in this FAQ.

  • My vhs tapes

what is the easiest way to make a dvd from a vhs tape movie that I copied to my
mini dv camcorder? the movie is about two hours long. I did not do a continuous copy, but paused every 10 minutes so I could get clips.
I know this is a lot of work. Can I skip all this and just buy a VHS/DVD combo recorder that will burn my collection of commercial vhs tapes. one guy at compusa said no problem but the notes about the sonys and panasonics said commercial tapes can't be copied/ burned to dvd.

thanks Sue for the info. I read the article when I got the mag. I finally set an hour aside to connect all the gear and do it. just a lot of work. while waiting for the dvd to complete the burn I watched another movie! I think I will spend the money and buy a dvd. its ok for someone with home movies which does not include me. I am still looking for an answer: can I use a combo vhs/dvd to copy commercial tapes?

  • Conversion steps and equipment of VHS tapes

I have seen on the forum several different (but usually old) references for converting VHS tapes.  What I would like to see listed is a professionals explanation of the steps and equipment that will yield the best results. Specifically here is what I want to do with a lot of family VHS tapes of reunions, vacations, etc.
What is the best file format to store the new digital movies if you are going to further edit them using FCP X?  When playing the tapes through a VCR and going through a converter, what are some possible converters to use now days?  Is it best to use a Time Base Corrector?  I know some of these things probably don't matter but if a person can afford to purchase a decent converter and TBC why not?  Especially if it will yield better source files to work from. If some of this is overkill and it is just as easy to cart the tapes to a local Video store that will convert the VHS to DVD should this be done?
Again, after converting the analog VHS to digital, is there a preferred file format or file type to use?
Before  I start editing the raw files I would like to have the best possilbe file and then I will select clips from within and make a more watchable home movie.
Its a big project but I would enjoy the process and learning more about FCP X in the process.
Any thoughts you have would be helpful.
    Many thanks,
    Greg

VHS was typically half-resolution broadcast, that is: 580 to 640 x 240. Some high quality units had 480, up to 520 lines of vertical resolution... but those were a long time ago and you really can't find any players today that support that resolution. If you have one of the older high-end players that still function well (I always wore mine out every 2 - 3 years) check the documentation and see how many "lines" of resolution you get from it.
I have an ADVC-55. It works with FCPX directly. It shows up in the Import media window as a directly connected camera. These units do not require "driver software" - they work "right out of the box." Quicktime Pro 7 can also import/record video from the ADVC-55 directly: just set QT7 to record and play your source. [Select the Video Source: ADVC-### in Preferences > Recording.]  Quicktime X can record from the ADVC-55, and surprisingly, exporting (saving) preserves the framerate and codecs [click the disclosure triangle in the record window on the transport controls and select the ADVC unit from the Camera portion of the menu.]
The input (into FCPX) from HD sources (camcorder) is 720x480 (29.97 interlaced) and necessitates setting the Anamorphic Override to Widescreen.
The documentation does not specify whether timecode is supplied by the unit, but it does. Selecting Get Info for the saved recording shows the codecs used as: DV/DVCPro - NTSC; Linear PCM; Timecode. These are the codecs which the converted video will be saved. These are all perfectly compatible with FCPX and can be used natively or you can opt to transcode optimized/proxy media if you wish.  You won't have much trouble editing SD video in FCPX. It's actually "smaller" than HD proxy media (which is 960x540 prores 422.)
The docs also do not specify whether TBC is used... it just states something about its ability to apply video "gain". I can state that it does a pretty good job of stabilizing video (from VHS decks). The fancier units probably do a better job. These converter units also seem to improve the video quality (as opposed to playing directly to a television set) -- a little more "vibrant."
The difference in price between the ADVC-55 and the 110 right now is about $31 US. If your budget is tight, get the 55, otherwise, don't skimp. I will offer this caveat as well: the 55 does not require an external power supply AS LONG AS you have FW400 connections (6-pin Firewire.) If all you have is 4-pin (FW800) then you will need to buy the "optional" power converter AND a FW400 to FW800 converter "cable" (or just the FW800 male/FW400 female plug -- phantom power is not transmitted through these converters cables).  For the 55, you can connect anything that has *composite* connectors AND/OR S-Video (use S-Video if you've got it.) With the 110, you can connect a DV cable directly.
I have also used USB converters... two different kinds -- the kind you can buy from Roxio (they're all rather generic and specialized for just this one purpose), and the EyeTV Hybrid adapter set... don't waste your money -- there is no way to "clean up" the video from a VHS player -- they're cheap for a reason. At least the EyeTV Hybrid is an awesome tv receiver.
Here is a sample from the ADVC-55:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NH7QeY__jCI
The VHS tape was about 10 years old and recorded on another recorder (tapes play best on the player they were recorded on), and I believe it was 2nd gen (a tape from a tape, aka, a dupe). The Player I used was a rather recent Sony VHS/DVD recorder combo thing (not "great", but adequate -- if you don't have a good transport, you won't get a good playback, you'll have tracking problems you can't fix.) Post was in FCP7.
Here's another sample that was in much worse condition starting out:

  • 8mm and Canopus or Digital 8 for capturing 8mm tapes?

I have a Canopus 300 that I've been using for capturing VHS tapes. I also have an 8mm camcorder. Will that camcorder + Canopus do as good a job as a Digital 8 camcorder or Digital 8 playback deck?
    Thanks!
    MikeR

Probably only a side-by-side comparison using the same test footage would provide a definitive answer as to which path produced the better result.
The data stream on a Digital8 tape is the same DV stream that is on a miniDV tape. The data is identical, it's just the physical tape that is different. You can only get 1 hour of DV onto a 2-hour Hi-8 tape, because the Digital8 camcorder runs the tape at approximately twice the speed.
My Sony DCR-TRV460 is smart enough to recognize the signal and switch between modes. I even have a few tapes which have regular analog 8mm video on part of the tape and Digital8 on a later part of the same tape. When it reaches one of these changes, the camera automatically stops and switches mode, then starts rolling again.
Not all DV is exactly identical, I have found out. There is a small discrepancy between the way Panasonic cameras record DV and the way Sony cameras record DV. I found this out when a colleague sent me a miniDV tape recorded on a Panasonic camera. I took it to a video shop to have it copied over to a Digital8 tape, which should have been a direct digital copy. But at the shop they told me Panasonic records DV in a slightly different way. The result is that there were some glitches and artifacts on the copy, and some audio problems as well. If you stick with all one manufacturer you should probably not run into that problem.
The downside is that I have found Sony camcorders to suddenly fail to operate at the worst possible moments, and for no apparent reason. This has happened to me several times, in fact my TRV460 died a couple of weeks ago. It is always wise to have an expert repairman who is knowlegeable about Sony available at all times.
I think that the Sony deck (GV-D200) might be exactly what you need for your project, but at $500 for a new one (or maybe $250-$300 for a used one on eBay) that would be a significant cost.
