Buying dual G5 2.5 ghz or mac mini?

I currently have a Mac G3. I want to get a powermac dual G5 2.5 ghz, but i also want os x 10.6 to work on it. does the G% have the Intel processor?

I'm toying with a similar choice.
I have a G5PM but would love an Intel so my choice is either a 'pre loved' Mac Pro or for about the same money a base model iMac.
My advice is to go for the iMac over the Mac Mini, unless you have a good and relatively new DVI LCD monitor larger than 22 inches. Once you add in the cost of the monitor for the Mac Mini the iMac comes out on top considering the new model iMac is much faster (than the Mac Mini or early Intel Pro Mac's) has more RAM and a bigger HDD than the iMac and other nice features like the camera. Also the Mac Mini doesn't include a KB or Mouse.
Now if the Mac Mini had the i3 Intel CPU, 4Gb RAM and 500Gb HDD, then it might be a closer fight.
Just My Opinion.
You could always sell your existing LCD/KB/Mouse on eBay if you don't need them.

  • Where can I buy a replacement DVD drive for a mac mini A1347

My mac mini is out of warranty and my toddler stuffed several discs into the drive slot.
Whenever it booted, it made a horrible ratcheting clicking noise, but couldn't eject anything.
I disassembled the entire computer, and pulled all 3 discs out with pliers. After reassembling, the computer works fine, but the DVD drive won't "catch" a disc and pull it in. I'm pretty sure some gear or something has been irreparably damaged, or that I bent it as I was pulling the disc out.
I've been having a difficult time trying to find a replacement drive to order anywhere.
Besides going with an external USB drive, does anyone know of the cheapest option for a replacement slot drive for the mac mini A1347. (AKA "mid 2010", AKA Core 2 Duo DDR3).
I don't want to haul it down to an Apple Store and pay a huge premium to have them diagnose and replace a part that I'm very capable of doing myself.

If your in the US then the ifixit link is a good option, in the UK the following is an option

However when I had to replace a drive in a Mac mini, I bought a bare drive off eBay.

  • Xserve Dual 1.33 G4 or Intel Mac Mini

Now I maybe in the wrong place to post a topic like this but I have a question for any of you folks that might have some input on this subject.
I have a small video business I ran out of my house and I also have many photos and videos of our family, kids, trips, etc. Not to mention a decent amount of music. I want all this along with my company files to reside in one place, but I want to keep overall energy and costs to a minimum.
I like this idea of the flexibility of the xserve, hot swap drives, stuff it in a closet and forget about it. But I also like the idea of all that stuff being on a little mini. There is something about those Minis.
Now there will be maybe 3 or 4 people at the most utilizing the server at one time, but for the most part just 2 people. I will be running an external hot swap hard drive for backups if I go the xserve route. If I go the Mini route I will be using an external drive for the files, another external for 2 client Time Machine Backups, and another external hot swap hard drive for the server file backups. Hot swap so I have my weekly backup drives going into a safe deposit box. I don't want to loose a file, they are all too important for both business and personal.
Which solution would you guys go with? I know the xserve is overkill for what amounts to a family server, but I got a great deal on it.
What solution do you think would suck up more energy to use? I am guessing the mini, but with the 3 external hard drives I am not sure.
I hope that someone can give me some solid advice.

Here is Apple's published document on the Xserve 1.33's power and BTU information:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86251
Here is the same on the Mac Mini:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304952
I think with 3 or 4 external drives on the Mac Mini, it'll be pretty close. Don't work out in the house or you'll skew the results

  • 1.83 GhZ Intel Mac mini crashes after Frontrow

Put your thinking caps on for this one...
My new Mac mini (purchased immediately before the new 2.0 mini release) is experiencing regular black screen feeezes / hangs / crashes with the "please reboot the computer" message on various languages.
I can make it hang by watching a few minutes of a video from iTunes or by playing a DVD.
as son as i exit frontrow it shows the decktop, i can move the mouse for 1 second, then the hard reboot message.
I have a large itunes library with the actual files on a networked NAS connected to over SMB and i have a wirelesa logitech VX revolution mouse and standard wired apple keyboard and an Airport Extreme that the mac mini is wired to.
I have run tests from the hardware cd/DVD that came with it and even replaced the 512 that came with it butno luck so I went back to the original ram. I have only had the box for a month from Mac Mall.
    THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP

Was the Logitech mouse driver I was using - had installed the one from the CD with the mouse (Vx nano). When I downloaded the newest from Logitech.com it stopped the issues. Sounds a lot like a Vista problem, but that was it!

  • Can I buy a television 32 inch for a mac mini and have a good image quality?

Hello I want to buy a tv 32 inch for work with videos, the image on tv will be good ?

Depends what you mean by good. The 32 inch screen typicaly has 1920x1080 pixels so it look poor when close up.  Also, some TVs do not look that sharp too.

  • Upgrading RAM in the somewhat anomalous1.33 Ghz Mac Mini

I have a 1.33 Ghz G4 Mac Mini that came with 512 MB RAM, and I'd like to upgrade the RAM to 1 GB. I haven't found any websites that specifically list this model of Mac Mini in their "find the RAM for your computer" search engines. According to my System Profiler, the pre-installed RAM is DDR SDRAM PC3200U-30330. So, I need to know exactly which RAM I should buy.

Welcome to the Apple discussion forums.
Sounds like you got one of the silent upgrade machines (mine is too). You'll want to read the Apple note on mini memory at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300572
I upgraded my memory to 1GB, and used the Crucial (http://www.crucial.com) memory shown for the 1.42ghz mini, which is PC2700 memory. I did talk to someone at Crucial, and they said that the memory the the 1.42ghz mini used would work fine for the 1.5ghz mini, and they're right. Works like a charm, and passes all the memory tests I could throw at it. I also benchmarked it against other 1.5ghz 1gb mini's, and it's performance was on a par with them.
I would look at Crucial or Kingston (not valueram) memory, although Samsung and Hynix will probably work fine, too (you can scan the discussion forums for others memory experiences). Kingston shows the same RAM strip for either the 1.25ghz or 1.42ghz mini's.
If you're considering upgrading the memory yourself, two good sources on how to physically upgrade the ram are the OWC video at http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/index.cfm?page=Video/directory.html and a pictorial guide from ifixit at http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/82.13.0.html.

  • Dual monitor on Mac Mini

Which model can I have dual monitors set up?
    Thanks

The mac mini does not support dual monitors at all. The iMac Duo Core supports dual monitors with mirroring or extended desktop. Any of the other iMacs that support dual monitors only supports mirror mode. The Macbook Pro supports dual monitors in mirror or extended mode also.

  • How to install Windows Server 2012 on a Mac Mini

Well the title says it all. I am in a small apartment and am setting up my home network. I purchased a Mac Mini to run Apple OS X Server on and also make sure that I can pass the certification test for Apple. But I would also like to set up a Windows Domain Controller so that I can either:
Have a Mac Mini I can dual boot
    - or -
Purchase a second Mac Mini and just put Windows Server 2012 on it.
Now you might ask why buy a mac and run windows. Well for one I need to get my MS certs up to date and for another, I am space constrained and the Mini is nice, small, and fits perfect where I would set it.
I have tried this following boot camp and some other guides. However, when I boot it never sees the attached USB or it never boots from the attached USB.
I have placed the Windows partition on the secondard disk drive as well, not the primary. Do not know if this makes a defference, from what I read it should not.
Thanks in Advance for any advise, guidance, or sections to read. Maybe Apple will officially support Windows 8 which should retroactively support 2012 before year end.

Not really sure what to say except that it worked perfectly on my MacBook Pro.  Like you, I need to update my Certs.  I have a working SQL Server wherever I go w/o need to buy another laptop.  I installed from DVD.
    good luck.

  • Best Monitor For Mac Mini

    Hi all,
Have a Late 2012 Mac Mini, 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 with 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3, and Intel HD Graphics 4000 512 MB.
I'm upgrading my 17" VGA monitor to a 24" HDMI and wondering what monitor has the best chance of just "working". By that I mean plugging an HDMI into the Mini, and plugging that into the HDMI input of the monitor and it outputs without any issues.
    I'm looking at either:
LG 24EN43VS Series 5ms HDI Full HD LED
    Asus VE248H
    Samsung S24D300H
    What do you think?
    Thanks!

I can only speak on the LG and Samsung. I have an LG connected to my iMac and dual Samsung's connected to my Mac Mini. Both make good monitors and it is really hard to tell if one is better than the other.
In retrospect, both the LG and Samsung models that you listed above, also have DVI-D input connections. So that, if you had a problem with the HDMI connection, you could always use the DVI connection.
On that, I can not suggest one over the other. Really your best bet is, to go to your local Electronic's retailer and look at them side by side.

  • No video on new Mac Mini

Hi, I seem to have a problem, that I need help for.
I have just bought a new 1.83 GHZ Intel Mac Mini. However, when I turn it on, my monitor (which is a Samsung Syncmaster 970p),it stays black.
The mini starts up all right, and I can hear the sounds when I press my keyboard, but no picture. The monitor works fine with my Windows-laptop, and when I turn the mini on, the blue light on the monitor lights up, but there is no picture.
When I use DVI, nothing happens at all, but when I connect with a VGA-cable, using the adapter, there is a flicker on the monitor, every few seconds.
I really hope that you can help me out!
    Thanks
    Klumb

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Try these things in order - moving on to the next in the event that the suggestion doesn't work.
First thing to try: Check the display to ensure if there is a menu option for connector, you have the right one selected. I'd focus on VGA first, since some dual input displays that have had problems have suffered DVI compatibility issues, but worked well in VGA.
Secondy: Disconnect the video cable(s) and any adapters, then reconnect, making sure everything is done up tight.
Third: disconnect the display, then reboot the mini. Once the system has had enough time to be fully running, connect the display.
Fourth: connect the mini to a different display to see if that works - and incidentally to complete the setup process if you haven't already been able to do so.
Fifth: once the system has been set up, reboot with the shift key down to get it into safe mode. If the display works then, open the display preferences pane and set it to a basic 800x600 or 1024x768 resolution. Then reboot.
Sixth: try a different DVI/VGA adapter.
If you can't get the mini to work with any other display, return it to where it came from, and ask for a replacement. It it does work with other displays, it suggests your Syncmaster is one of the few displays that the mini isn't happy with. If possible, take it to where you can connect it to other Macs and see if it works OK.

  • Can I install SSD and HDD on mac mini server?

hi. I want to buy a new mac mini server with two hdd. can I replace one hdd on my ssd and leave second hdd for files? And can I install OSX on my ssd and windows on my second hdd (divide it into 2 parts... for bootcamp and file storage)? thanks

    AGStudio.pro
as I know, it is impossibe to install ssd and hdd in this model
Thats incorrect, who told you that?    Ive installed a second 7mm drive in several Mac Minis and own 2 myself.  Typing on same now.
(you can put in a second 9.5mm drive rather than a 7mm drive, however it takes nimble fingers unless you want to completely remove the dual drive caddy from inside the mac Mini)
see youtube video on installing second drive in the Mini

    AGStudio.pro
       I don't need a server.
Then you dont need the mac mini server.    All you need is a standard mac mini.
The mac mini server is EXACTLY THE SAME as the standard Mac mini quad core mini,....except with a second drive and Server software.
All current Mac Mini have a dual slot for a SECOND DRIVE

  • Upgrade Processor of my "2002 Quicksilver" G4 or move up to a Mac mini?

    Hello,
My most CPU-demanding use is the iLife series (and iDVD encoding). Otherwise it's just routine email and web browsing.
    1. My 2002 Quicksilver G4 has the 933MHz processor but can be upgraded to (say) the OWC 1.467 GHz processor (Mercury Extreme) for $360. This G4 system bus speed is 133 MHz. I'm maxxed out at 1.5 GB of RAM and two internal 160 GB hard drives. Tiger 10.4.8 is running well as is pretty much everything else.
    2. Instead of a processor upgrade of my Quicksilver, I'm wondering if I should just instead spend about $1,400 to buy and max out a 1.83 GHz Superdrive Mac mini to 2 GB of RAM and 160 GB for the single internal drive; this includes the Apple Care Protection Plan. (I'll use my existing 22" Cinema display.)
Question: Is the Mac mini system bus speed 667 MHz?
Wait for Leopard to come with the mini?
    3. I probably have too much time on my hands. Do none of the above.
    Any thoughts? Thanks.
    ~Raymon

    Thank you, mactothefuture.
It has taken all of my will power to not succumb to upgrading my 2002 Quicksilver G4! So far I've been able to resist (1) upgrading the processor to the OWC Mercury Extreme 1.467-1.5 GHz processor and (2) a USB 2.0 PCI adapter card!
When ever I feel tempted, I just remind myself of SYSTEM BUS SPEED: 133 MHz for my G4 vs. 667 MHz for a Mac Mini. Now I'm even considering a Mac Pro, perhaps a used one -- too silly.
So right at this moment I'm keeping myself occupied by futzing around upgrading my 1.2 Mbps dsl ISP service to a 4 to 8 Mbps Comcast cable service!
    Thanks again.

  • Is 2011 mac mini faster then 2011 MBP?

    Hello
I am thinking on buying a Mac Mini to replace my MBP for 'desktop' computing and keep the MBP for only portable work.
Is the 999$ 2.0 Ghz i7 Mac Mini faster or at least same speed as 1799$ 2.0 Ghz i7  early 2011 MBP ?
    Thanks!

Be aware (if you have not looked already) that the new MacMini does not have an internal optical drive.  One contributor discussions delayed if not abandoned buying new MacMini for this reason.
The tech specs page boast "DVD optical drive sharing wirelessly", but that is likely only Mac-to-mac.
Means those left at home without the MBP need an external optical drive.  But ... that means you can buy a BluRay drive.
Not advising any path, just stating.
