Buying External Drive that Only Needs One USB Port?

The optical drive on my 2007 MacBook Pro has been dead for about 6 months. I need to get an external one so I can install some software, but I am having trouble finding one that only uses one USB port, as there is only one on each side of my notebook. I went to Best Buy today, and the only one they had that is compatible with a Mac needs two side-by-side USB ports.
Does anyone know of any good Mac compatible external drives that only require one USB port? I am interested in purchasing one by LaCie, but their site does not specify how many USBs it requires.
Any advice you can give me will be greatly appreciated!

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
You might want to consider a FireWire powered optical drive:
http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/optical-drives/
A FireWire port will deliver more power, so you would only need to use one FW port. The people at OWC are very Mac knowledgeable and could help you to pick one out. Your 2007 MBP should have both FW400 and FW800, so you could use either port.
Good luck!

  • How do you connect a usb printer and usb external hard drive to the airport extreme, as it only has one usb port?

I'm thinking about upgrading my old 802.11g router for a new airport extreme. Can it connect to a usb printer and external hard drive at the same time and acutally work. It only has one usb port on the back.
    thank you!

To add multiple USB printers and/or HDDs, you just first need to connect a USB hub (powered prefereably) to the AirPort's USB port, and then, add the USB devices to the hub.

  • Capturing Video from a Camera that only has a USB port

I have read a number of posts from people who have been frustrated because they can not 'capture' video from a video camera that only has a USB port on it.  Unfortunately, Premier wants to see a Firewire connection; otherwise, it won't connect to a camera.   However, it is still very easy to import your video clips from such a camera into Premier Pro:
    1. Turn on your video camera and connect it to your computer via the USB connections.
    2. In Premier, go to the Media Browser.
    3. In the Media Browser, you will see all the drives on your computer. Amongst those drives will be a drive that was created for your camera. (It will be identified as X: (Removable).  Double click on that drive and you will see all your recorded video clips in the column just to the right.
    4. Highlight any/all clips that you want to import. Then, simply drag those clips/files up into your Project Organizer (normally, in the upper left corner of the page)
    That's it.
You'll probably find this method of importing your clips/files off of your camera easier than if you did have a Firewire and utilized the 'Capture' function.

And a bigger problem will be that that camera (with its card or HDD) will have to be connected, whenever one wishes to edit, and it cannot be overwritten to).
As has been mentioned, the Project file does NOT contain any Assets, with the exception of Titles created in PrPro's Titler. This ARTICLE will give a bit more background on what is in the Project file, plus a bit more.
The same sort of problem can arise if one Imports a VOB from a DVD-Video disc, without Copying the VOB's over to the HDD. First, that DVD must be inserted for each editing session, and things will be horribly slow.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Ex-80gb PS3 hdd - in enclosure.. need two usb ports?

Have got a 'Omata Mobile HD' enclosure.
Have installed the 80gb formatted hitachi drive that was in my PS3 into it.
PLugged it into powerbook usb port... disc utility doesnt recognise it... read instructions again from Omata, all in pigeon english - just talks about windows install etc.. .google search later reveals that it needs two usb ports - one for power, one for data - is this true? Does this go for all enclosures?
i would need to then buy a usb extendor as the usb ports are on opposite sides of the pbg4.
Are there any enclosures that can run a 80gb off one usb port? It also has DC 5V/1A on the enclosure are these quite common?

Hi, Steve. Given the inconvenience of connecting a dual-USB "Y" cable to your Powerbook, the drawbacks of USB2 compared to FireWire for use with any Powerbook (USB is non-bootable on all PPC Macs and slower than FW 400, never mind FW 800), and the very low cost of your Omata enclosure, I recommend simply replacing it with a FW enclosure. Save the Omata one for use with your next Mac, which will be Intel-powered and USB-bootable, and won't have the limited USB bus power problem that afflicts all Powerbook G4s. Most bus-powered FW enclosures are bootable and have no trouble getting enough juice from Powerbooks, unlike nearly all USB2 enclosures. Get one that has the Oxford 911+ FW bridge chipset in it; that's far and away the most reliable bridge.

  • Is there a way to make Time Capsule back-up its contents to an external hdd connected to it's usb port.

I wanted to know if there is anyway i could automatically backup my time capsule to an external drive connected to it's usb port. I tried using automator to make it copy newly added files into the external but it didn't seem to work as i had hoped and i wanted to know if anyone had any experiences in using other programs to copy the contents of one folder in the TC to another folder in a drive externally connected to the TC and also keep the contents of both folders up to date.
In short, I am basically trying to make a "raid 1" and i know that TCs dont support raid natively so thats why i asked if anyone knows of a program that could do it from the mac side.
                                                                                                         Thanks.

Carbon copy cloner might work.. expect it to be very slow.. especially if you are using wireless.
There will be various rsync shareware available.. but like your experience getting it to actually work is loads of fun.. or NOT.

  • Using more than one USB Port at a time?

So, I'm trying to record something in a project using my Rocksmith USB to 1/4 inch cable, but I also need to make a screen recording of me doing that for a school project using my RockBand USB mic. The problem for me is that only one USB Port recognizes these two, and the three that don't aren't dead, as they work with everything else I have. How do I set it so that more than one USB port can recognize these devices? I don't want to have to keep switching every time.

    Thanks mhartnett.
I have looked at the example on the link you gave. According
to the example for the FileReferenceList in the documentation, it
seems to make multiple or rather separated requests to the
    server-side upload script.
So for example if I have 3 files to upload, the script will
call the the upload() function of the FileReference class thrice
with the URLRequest(which is the server-side upload script). So in
this case, my server-side script that is handling the upload will
only upload one file at one time.
Is there a way where I can have say all the 3 files sent
together to the server-side script, and then have them uploaded all
at once within the server-side script itself?
So say my PHP file, I could have access to like
    $_FILES['Filedata1'], $_FILES['Filedata2'] and $_FILES['Filedata3']
    together at one request.

  • One usb port left

My Desktop Quicksilver G4 only has one USB port that is usable. I have a flat screen with 2 ports in the back that never worked and an airport extreme that has a port but I can't get anything to run off of that.
I use the only port I have for my wireless keyboard and mouse. When I go to print, I'm up a creek without a paddle.
What are my options - short of buying a new computer.
    Thanks.

Have you ever tried reseting the PMU.? Sometimes that will reset USB ports, unless you fried them.
That article is for a different model G4, but it is the same procedure for yours.

  • Random Errors fix one another pops up - One USB port won't install device's drivers

I am trying to get this computer to work and every time I fix something another issue shows up. It is like a sinking boat in a carton. First it was slow and just acting up. After a few tweaks I got RestoreHealth to run and fix the issue. No SFC isn't reporting
any errors. For the longest time chkdisk wouldn't run manually but every startup it would run says checking.. fixing... fixed. This would happen on every startup now that is solved and it reports back okay. There were some drivers not working got
those working. Visual Studio had some sensor drivers that were reporting errors to it is uninstalled to rule out that. Currently one USB port won't install any drivers for the device plugged in, or use a driver already installed. Other ports work and all the
devices plugged in work in other ports. I would assume the port is bad but there are some programs that used to work and now don't. I am thinking there is an issue installing programs but I am out of my depth currently.
One think I am wondering is about a line in the CBS.log. I really wish I could find a resource to learn more about how to read the logs. I know how to read some but there are things I just don't get, yet. A link to an article(s) about CBS logs
    would be great.
Here is the line I am curious about, even if it isn't part of the current issue I would like to know for futurereference:
SQM: Failed to start upload with file pattern: C:\WINDOWS\servicing\sqm\*_std.sqm, flags: 0x2 [HRESULT = 0x80004005 - E_FAIL]

a message appears telling me that i need a usb drive (even when I have one)

This message could refer to the Windows drivers which can be on an USB drive you create or a Windows installation ISO on a USB drive
    From the manual
You can download the Windows support software and copy a Windows 7 ISO image to a USB flash drive.
To install Windows 7 with a USB flash drive, you need the following: An ISO image of Windows 7 Home Premium, Professional, or Ultimate downloaded from Microsoft.
A USB flash drive with 4 GB or more.
Boot Camp Assistant erases the flash drive, and copies to it the Windows 7 ISO image and software drivers that let Windows work with your Mac hardware

The Apple external SuperDrive actually exceeds the allowed power draw. Because of this, it is only trouble-free on certain models that accommodate this excess.
All others require an external Power source.

  • Mid 2011 Macbook Air - Yosemite keyboard and trackpad stopped working, the only button that worked was the power button, only one USB port works.

    I have a Mid 2011 Macbook Air.
    Upgraded to Yosemite last week.
Three days ago I was using my Macbook Air for the first time since upgrading to Yosemite. I had been using my Macbook Air for approximately 30 minutes, I was using safari and the keyboard and trackpad stopped working (would not respond). The only button that worked was the power button.
I rebooted and they were still not working. I plugged in a USB mouse and external USB keyboard, only one USB port would work (the Left USB port if looking at the screen) so I had to swap between keyboard and mouse.
After logging in there is a bluetooth icon at the top of the screen with a sawtooth line through it. Bluetooth is unavailable and the bluetooth icon is missing from the system preferences menu.
If I run a hardware test by holding D (on USB keyboard) at startup it says that no problems are found and at the conclusion of the test the keyboard and trackpad start working again. When I log on the bluetooth is working again.
I shut down the Macbook Air and when I started it again the keyboard and trackpad and right side USB ports were all not working again. I logged in using the USB keyboard and mouse and the bluetooth not available sawtooth icon had returned.
I ran the hardware test again and at the conclusion of the test the trackpad and keyboard started working again.
I have tried deleting com.apple.Bluetooth.plist and com.apple.Bluetooth.plist.lockfile from /Library/Preferences/ and tried resetting SMC and Power Functions but this did not fix the issue. The only thing that seems to work is running a hardware test - obviously I don't want to do this every time I use the computer.
I do not believe any hardware is faulty/damaged - I think it has something to do with bluetooth/Yosemite.
I do not have the Macbook with me at the moment, if you have suggestions that I can try or additional checks/info you require please let me know and I can get back to you.
    Thanks,
    John

    Hi!
I have exactly the same problem, and I can't find any solution.
I can't even track down the root of the problem: the Bluetooth/Wifi module? The trackpad? The keyboard/top case? The logicboard?
I've tried all the usual: SMC/PRAM reset, clean install, kext cache clearing.
    Any suggestion is greatly appreciated!

    I have a iMac with 10.7.4

I want to back up the data on the external Hard Drive that is attached to the Time Capsule to the Tim Capsule using Time Machine.
Thanks for the clarification.  Unfortunately, that will not work.  You will need to connect the drive directly to your Mac if you want Time Machine to backup the drive to the Time Capsule.

ok I'll try this - why didn't I have this problem with my previous Macbook air - I cannot remember how I managed setting up an original Win 7 with exact.the same equipement. Has the bootcamp Software changed? I remember burning a cd with the Windows Driver.

Install software such as Paragon NTFS, or reformat it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or FAT32. Mac OS X 10.6.5 and newer can also read and write exFAT partitions.
