Buying external hardrive for Mac OS X 10.5.8

I am looking to buy an external hardrive but I can't find any that are compatible with my version of the mac. What external hardrives are compatible with Mac OS X 10.5.8?

Most any drive will work, some are far better than others, & the System Requirements are for some software provided on the drive that not only you likely do not need, but even more likely don't want to install.
Allan's suggested link is good.
I'd really avoid Bus powered drives unless you simply must have portability.

How do I fix it? I run my Itnues from this external and now my library is gone. Luckily I have it saved somewhere else, which is not a problem, but I won't be able to write to this HD for right now. I can't see an option to give those permission back.

Unless what you have to transfer is enormous, skip the external HD altogether and use a USB flash drive; you can get them with capacities to 128GB. Format the flash drive as FAT32 or ExFAT as LowLuster suggests so it can be read and written to on both PC's and your Mac.

  • Advice on External HDD for Mac & Windows

    Hello
I am looking for advice regarding using a external HHD for Mac & Windows.
I searched the forum, but failed to find a updated thread on this subject matter.
I will be using the drive on both platforms regularly.
Should i use HFS+ with a small FAT32 partition to keep MacDrive on?
What is a good way to approach this?
Im not sure what would be optimal for both platforms.
Thanks in advance for your input.

    Why just one?
Shopping list I can think of:
Vista: NTFS for backups and storage. Can be read by, but not written, Mac OS.
MacDrive 7: can access HFS+ from within Windows (but not x64 versions)
WinClone 1.5: to make backups of Windows from within Mac OS (requires disk image or partition to hold volume image)
SuperDuper: essential for OS X backups and bootable clone.
A drive that is used for emergency only and maybe backup partition, separate from your OS X and windows clone drive.
You can create large partitions with Disk Utility to be FAT32. Read and write in both, but not the best file system and limited to files less than 4GB.
FW800 would be fast and efficient interface. Also, eSATA if possible.

  • Formatted External drive for Mac OS extended

    Hi,
I actually change from windows to Mac (no comparison...!!) but trying to transfer my photos (Pictures in finder) to an external hard disk i can`t drag and drop and i do not know why....i read in one forume that i have to formatted the external drive for Mac OS extended. First question: how could i do that? if my hard disk was originally formatted for windows, do i lose the info when i formatted?
    Thanks!!

You will lose the files on the HD when you reformat it.  So copy what you want off the drive to a folder on your Mac temporarily.
select the HD on the Desktop and launch Disk Utility.
select the HD in the left hand page of DU.
    click on the Partiton button
    select 1 Partition
select OS X Extended (journaled) in the drop down Format menu.
    click on the Apply button
drag the folder of files onto the EHD to copy back and then delete from your Mac's drive after verifying that they all copied back successfully.

  • Should I necessarily use an external hard "for mac" to get a backup from my macbook?

I want to get a backup from my macbook pro using the time machine. Should I necessarily use an external hard "for mac" to get a backup from my macbook? Because I have an external hard, but its not for mac. Is there any way I can use this one?

You can use the external drive you want with your Mac. However, the "for Mac" external drives come prepared to connect them and start using them, and probably you will have to do some additional steps with your external drive.
First, you will have to format the external drive with "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)", the only filesystem compatible with OS X. If you have got files on the external drive, you have to copy them to your Mac before erasing the drive. Then, follow these steps to format the external drive with "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" > http://pondini.org/TM/5.html
Then, to use Time Machine, open System Preferences > Time Machine > Select Disk, and choose your external drive, so your Mac will start making backups to your external drive

I bought Keynote for iPad. Do I have to buy another license for Mac?

    Yes.
Keynote for iOS and Keynote for OS X are two different applications running on two different operation systems.
    They are not interchangeable.

I need a link to buy online battery for Mac Book Pro 15" late 2008. Can't find this battery in the Apple Store...Battery: Model No. A1281 10.8 V 50 Wh.

The only place that you can get an Apple battery is from Apple.  All of the counterfeiter's will claim that they have an OEM battery for the simple reason so that they can fool you in purchasing from them.
At least from OWC you know exactly what you will be purchasing and they have a one year warranty.  I have purchased two from them, one for my 2006 MBP and one for my 2010 MBP.
    Ciao.

  • How do I buy CS6 Standard for Mac from the Adobe website?

How do I buy CS6 Standard for Mac from the Adobe website? There doesn't appear to be an option for Mac although all the FAQs insist the suite will work on a Mac. Bought a Windows version by mistake and had it refunded, the Adobe help dude said you had to add something to the basket during checkout but can't find the way into that either. Is it just me or is the system completely rubbish?...

You need to contact Adobe Support either by chat or via phone when you have serial number and activation issues.

Have conflicting views from apple Specialits; I'm ready to buy my 1st Mac. However, I work with a PC user with MS Publisher files a lot. Can Apple PAGES open .pub files, edit and resave them?  OR, do I have to buy Publisher software for Macs?  if yes to buy, any recommendations?

If you want to switch from PC to Apple I recommend a programm like Parallels.
It has a tool (believe its called transporter) which runs on your current PC and creates a file (big) which is a "virual machine". It is a 1:1 copy of your PC which will run under parallels on your iMac.
You will be running your "old" PC as it was under MAC OS X while you run MAC applikations etc at the same time.
This is how I made the transition to Apple.

    Hi,
Sorry to say, but you'll need to buy an external microphone - there is no internal hardware for this.
    Best regards,

  • Excel doc created on PC, edited on my Mac, sent back to PC won't print properly.  Do I have to buy Microsoft office for Mac?

I have to complete their Excel form, send back, they add to it, they want to print it and say it won't print as I see it.  I don't want to buy Microsoft office for Mac just for this... any ideas?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
A couple of ideas... when you exported the document did you check "do compatibility check" for Word? If not that's probably it. Other solutions: - OpenOffice, or NeoOffice play well with MS Word. Either of them are free downloads.

  • External window Hardrive for Mac Os 10.6

    Hi All,
I need to use the following software in my Mac Os 10.6 http://shop.sage.co.uk/accounts.aspx?utm_source=sagecouk&utm_medium=sagecouk&utm _campaign=sagecouk_home  but unfortunately its designed for  "Window Microsoft" .
I know how to split my hardrive trough "Boot Camp Assistant" , but I was wandering if any one knows, if tis possible to have an external "Window hardrive" in Mac?
    many thanks

A few quick internet searches wll provide you with references to answer your question.
Is it possible?  Yes, if you have the right tools and knowledge.
Is it supported? Not by Apple or Microsoft, and possibly not by anyone else.
Is it easy? It might be, or it might not work at all depending on your specific conditions.
Boot Camp only supports booting MS Windows from an internal drive.  There are other EFI boot loaders which mght support booting Windows from an external drive.  One such example would be rEFIt.  Now, once you have an EFI Boot Loader that supports booting from an external drive, you may need to build a custom Windows installer to add driver support for your external drive becuse the native WIndows installer might not support your device (this was true for USB drives not too long ago).  There are some excellent resources that will walk you through the process if you just google them.

  • COMPATIBLE CAMCORDER & EXTERNAL HARDRIVE FOR MacBook WITHOUT FIREWIRE PORT.

    Good Evening Ladies & Gentleman,
I have a MacBook(13" Aluminum 2008 version) that does NOT have a firewire port, just USB.
    - As far as CAMCORDERS go, What Model and Brand is best compatible with it?
    - Also, as far as EXTERNAL HARDRIVES goes, which ones will be most compatible with the MacBook 13" Aluminum version 2008?
    - SUGGESTIONS WILL BE MUCH, MUCH APPRECIATED. THANKS.

    Hey,
As for camcorders - I don't really think that there is any limitation caused by your Macbook. Perhaps every single model by all the wide-known manufacturers as Canon, Sony, Panasonic, etc. has a USB port, so you don't have to worry about firewire.
As for external hard drives - You can find a huge number of external hard drives that are 100% compatible with all Macs for sure, on the Apple Online Store.
