Buying Final Cut Studio second hand- can I install on Mac Pro?

I'm going to buy Final Cut Studio software from a friend, who has registered the application with Apple. Can I install the software on my Mac Pro without problems? The previous owner had it installed on a MacBook Pro.

As long as they delete it from their computer, you should be fine....

  • Final CUt Studio 2 will not run on my Mac Pro & Macbook Pros simultaneously

I was under the impression that the licensing contract for FCPS2 allowed for the software to be installed and run on a desktop and a portable machine simultaneously. Am I wrong? I purchased Final Cut Studio 2 legally, and have installed it on my Mac Pro and my Macbook Pro, but if I try to open one of the FCS apps while one is running on the other computer, I get a protection error message and have to shut down the app. Does anyone know a workaround to this other than shutting off airport on one of the machines?

    Yes, you are wrong.
The license allows for the installation of a copy on each machine but they can not run simultaneously. The intention is to allow users to work with a laptp while away from the main editing machine. If you need the capability running two copies at the same time, buy another copy.
    Good luck,

  • Final Cut Studio is crashing a lot using a Mac Pro (nehalem) 2009

    Greetings,
I have a video workstation based on a Mac Pro (2x2.26GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon Nehalem, 6 GB RAM, 640 GB HD, 512 NVIDEA VRAM) with a Blackmagic Decklink HD Extreme 2009 and an Highpoint RocketRAID 4322 card (properly connected to a RAID 5 array).
I'm editing, with Final Cut Studio 3, a big TV project with some TGA and loads of HD XDCAM EX 35mbs video footage.
    *What is happening wrong?*
Final Cut Pro is crashing to many times and dont let me work with the flow that is supposed. I start to work and i do a bit of scrubbing in the timeline and suddenly the rainbow spyral starts to spin and kaput! FCP just crashes.
I've tried to many things. Re-installing everything from the baseline, plug out the 2 PCIe cards (and not even the drivers are installed). Even so FCP still crashes with the project.
Funny thing is... This symptom only happens with the Nehalem Mac Pro. I have another station based on a Mac Pro 2x2.66 GHz Dual Core Xeon 3 GB RAM 2006 and when i run the project... everything works fine. FCP here doesn't crash.
This is what makes me believe that the problem must be with the new Mac Pro.
I have the reports generated by the FCP after the crash. You can find it here:
    http://www.ideiascompernas.com/reports/
I'm getting frustrated because i've invested big in this workstation, safe in the knowledge that it was going to be stable to complete my requirements.
Is there anything that i or Apple can do to resolve my problem. Is it the processor? Extended Hardware Test says that everything is ok.
    I'll be waiting,
    best regards, thanks,
    Pedro

I see you have the GT120, not a very nice card really but maybe it is 'enough.' I'd upgrade. To ATI Radeon 4870, once you get it stable and working.

I see your crash is kernel panic actually.
    Exception Type: EXCBADACCESS (SIGBUS)
    Exception Codes: KERNPROTECTIONFAILURE at 0x0000000000000000
    Crashed Thread: 194
Almost always that is memory related, are you seeing parity errors?
Watch System Profile - Memory tab
Replace the RAM (I'd even up it to more memory, 6 x 2GB is what I would have configured for)
Have you tested your RAM? run Apple Hardware Test?
Disabled ALL USB and Firewire devices?
Is the RR4322 okay to run in slot #2 (16x) rather than in slot 3 or 4 (4x)?
Getting RAM replaced, advanced exchange, or go out and getting some Kingston or Crucial etc for your system, and swapping, really is one good method, trial and error, to find the cultprit or rule out RAM.
Errors like this can mean flushing your caches is a must, and possibly due to errors and crashes, clean system install, checking data (both time consuming) and being careful to recheck your drives with Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro 5 to insure there are not any corrupt files (not perfect either which is why restore the system from known good backup image can be a must).

  • If i buy final cut studio 2 and then get final cut studio 3 upgrade will it be final cut studio 3

ive been looking around to buy final cut studio 3 for weeks now with no success and i think ive found a solution i'm just wondering if it will work by buying final cut studio 2 full and then buying final cut studio 3 upgrade overall will everything be final cut studio 3?

You can still get the FCS3 upgrades from the apple shop
No you can not get FCS upgrades from Apple retail stores or Apple dealers, they have been recalled by Apple.
Only places that will stock is independant retailers and online used software vendors.
Apple have clearly stated that FCS is now ''end of life''

  • I have a question before I buy Final Cut Studio 2...

I plan on buying Final Cut Studio 2 tomorrow, but before I buy it, I have a question. If something were to happen to my MacBook Pro, can I just install it on another computer? It might be a stupid question but I just want to be sure before I drive to the Apple Store.
    Thanks!

As long as the computer meets the minimum specification you can install it on any computer.
Physically you can install it on thousands of computers but Apple wouldn't be too pleased !
However, you are legally allowed to have it simultaneously on one laptop and one desktop that are owned by you.
So whenever you want you can take it off one computer and put it on another.

  • Buy Final Cut Studio 2 for DVD Studio Pro? Pro & Cons of DVD Studio Pro?

I am thinking of buying Final Cut Studio 2 because it includes the DVD authoring software DVD Studio Pro. iDVD uses automatic settings that are hard if not impossible to alter and so some DVDs are authored with very poor bit rates.
    1. Is it possible to change the bit rate manually in DVD Studio Pro so the best Quality DVD can be authored?
    2. Is is possible to change the audio from PCM (which takes up a lot of DVD space) to AC-3 in DVD Studio Pro, so picture quality is improved?
    3. Is there a way to buy DVD Studio Pro as a separate software package and use it with Final Cut Express?
    4. Generally what other options for DVD authoring with Mac are there besides iDVD and DVD Studio Pro?
    5. Is DVD Studio Pro a good piece of software or are there any particular faults?

    1. Yes, but you would use Compressor for your encoding instead of DVDSP.
    2. DVDSP will only encode to AIFF, Compressor will allow you to encode audio to AC3.
    3. Negative. DVDSP is only available as part of Final Cut Studio 2.
    4. You could try using Roxio Toast.
    5. DVDSP gets the job done for me. I think it works quite well.
For a good explanation of how Compressor and DVDSP workflows work within Final Cut Studio, I'd recommend you take a look at DVD StepByStep

  • I have been using final cut express for years and now want to switch to final cut studio 3. do I have to remove final cut express before installing final cut studio 3 or can I have them both installed at the same time on one computer?

You can have them both on the same computer as I and many others have done for years.
Just go ahead and install FCS 3 normally.
There will be absolutely no problems.

  • Where can I buy Final Cut Studio?

I have been searching everywhere, but I can't find Final Cut Studio with Final Cut 7 in it.  Anyone know where I could buy this?  I would love to buy it from Apple, but I can't find it anywhere.

    Discontinued.
Call the Apple online store. A few months ago they still had a few copies for sale by telephone only.
    Maybe you will get lucky.

  • Cheapest way to buy final cut studio 2

Hi there, I live in Australia and want to work out the cheapest way to legitimately and legally buy the full version of final cut studio 2 and think I have worked it out, but wanted to sanity check with others. My idea is to buy a new copy from ebay of an old version of final cut pro eg FCP 2, 3, 4 or 5 for a few $$ (have seen some for around $50) and then go to apple to buy an upgrade to final cut studio 2 rather than the full version ($899 vs $1,698AUD). My question is does this make sense. or should I just bite the bullet and buy the full version straight up? If any one can advise me of any hidden pitfalls of my plan it would be hugely appreciated. Thanks!

It can go either way. My eBay software purchases have worked out great. For example, I bought the upgrade from FCE to FCP on eBay and then used that to upgrade to FCS2. Everything was totally on the up-and-up. But too, I was completely prepared for every penny of that purchase to go down the toilet, if that's how it ended. I got lucky, it was just fine. So it's your call.
But if you get burned and have no recourse then whatever money got wasted there could've been spent going down a route that you can trust to be 100% legit. It all depends on your personal threshold for the potentially painful, wasteful consequences. It's a craps shoot. Feelin' lucky?

  • About to buy Final Cut Studio 2 OR Final Cut Express

Hey everyone, sorry if this has been threaded to death but i'm too lazy to search for it.
So I've worked with Final Cut before, FCP4 and FCE, I am definitely confident I can work with it without being TOO overwhelmed. The college i'm going to for mass communications definitely works with macs with FCP so it will def be an advantage to owning it now.
So my main concern is will my macbook pro c2d 2.16 with only 1 gb of ram memory (i bought it in may of this year) be able to run the entire final cut studio 2 without much sluggishness or requirement problems? Also i know i need a lot of hdd space (ive got like 60 gigs left) so i know an alternative drive will be required. but aside from this, is anyone running their FCP on a similar mac? thanks!

    Hi Guys,
Motion needs RAM to work properly, at lest 4GB of RAM for some kind of acceptable performance.
I tested Color on my MacbookPro (2GB RAM) and surprisingly it was working fine despite the monitor resolution isn't the one officially required (Serious color grading require an HD monitor anyway!).
    Austino,
Installing FCP6 and DVDstudioPro would be a good starting point for you to let your basic editing work get going.
I totally agree with Studio X,
You need an external hard drive to use as your scratch disk.
A G Tech *G-RAID 2* could be an option or Caldigit drives

  • Final Cut Studio 5.1 won't install with new imac7,1 running Snow Leopard

    Howdy
I bought Final Cut Studio 5.1 (FCP5, Motion2, etc) and tried to install on a very modern machine running snow leopard.
The machine meets all the system requirements, as far as i can tell, but when i click to install, i get the following:
    Alert
Your computer does not have the hardware required to run this software. See the Read Me for details.
Is this a graphics card issue?
Obviously i'm a bit annoyed because the of the costs and i thought a high-end computer would be able to run this 5-year old software package.
If anyone can advise me of a way to circumnavigate the problem using the tools i already have, i'd be very appreciative.
    Thanks!
    ALB

    Hi, thanks for replies.
It was bought from a reseller and is version 5.1.
I was under the impression that you could only upgrade if you had a previous version of FCS installed. Since i cannot install the version i have, i cannot upgrade.
I did try the 'esc' key but it didn't have any effect at all - this is a good tip though, so thanks for the idea. I'm sure one day i'll need to use it.
I'm close to admitting defeat and selling it on again, but if there are any FCS experts out there with a fix, that'd be super awesome!

  • How well does Final Cut Studio run with 3gb of ram? Macbook Pro 2.33mhz

I have a 2.33mhz (Model a1211) Macbook Pro. I've maxed out the ram to 4gb but because of the motherboard restrictions (that I still don't quite understand) it can only use 3GB.
I've read on the FCS specs that the minimum is requirement is 1GB but Apple recommends 4GB.
I cut mainly short 3 to 5 minute pieces with AVCHD video decoded with up to 60-90 minutes of footage.
Will I have any serious issues with any of the Final Cut Studio Programs that I should be aware of?
I'm obviously not expecting Mac Pro results but If it doesn't run very well with 3GB, I might have to rethink my purchase. If it is just a "hiccup" now and then with waiting for video to start or such, I will deal.
    Thanks
    Bryan

Motion is gfx intensive. Meaning that the lower the gfx card, the lower the performance. You should expect little-to-no realtime performance from Motion on the system mentioned with even basic-to-remotely-intermediate animations. CPU RAM will make a difference in the amount of total frames that you can render in a RAM preview, but it will not affect realtime performance. With your proposed system: add a particle, a lower third text, a replicator with 5,000 points, a light with some shadows, and a reflection (and this is one of each mind you, not multiple instances) and expect around a * less than * 1-3 fps playback in draft quality with %50-%25 playback resolution. Then expect to wait up to a minute or more with the beachball of death for each parameter change. No joke either. Good luck fine-tuning your moderate-to-even-remotely-complex animation with your desired system.
If working in Motion is your desire, then focus on the graphics card. Unfortunately you can not upgrade your gfx card on the MBP, so you should consider selling your MBP and investing in a Mac Pro. You can upgrade the gfx card in the Mac Pro and obtain optimal performance from Motion. Otherwise you'll literally be stuck in the mud with your animations.

  • Final Cut Studio Crash - Just Purchased and Installed - Crashes Immediately

Just installed Final Cut Studio (1).
    Crashes immediately after open.
    Please help.
I can provide report (code) if someone that can help needs to see it.
    Thanks,

It is Snow Leopard. Don't run SL with your version of FCP. So what this means you have to do is back up all your files, erase the hard drive, install the Leopard OS from scratch (10.5), then fully update, then install FCS, and fully update. And stay there.
If your FCS is an older FCS, you can't run the latest OS, typically.
