Buying Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
Hello,
I am not sure this is the right place to place the question.
As soon as Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard comes out I am buying a Macbook with this new software. The problem is that I have my beloved imac g5 with Mac OS X Tiger, but I want to update it to Leopard.
The question: "Can I buy an extension (like you do when you buy iwork08 for family use) for my imac when I buy the new Macbook with Mac OS X Leopard?"
I would really appreciate your help and/or suggestions. It really would be a big blow to my pocket if I had to buy a whole new program for just one computer. I will be buying iwork 08 for the two.
Thanks!
Since Apple's upgrade policy has not been announced, if there is any, no one here can answer your question truthfully. http://www.apple.com/macosx/ has everything that is known about Leopard to the general public. Until that changes with official upgrade information, you'll have to just wait.
Secondly Amazon already is offering preorder on the Family version of Leopard.
Whether or not Leopard will work on your iMac G5 no one yet knows for sure.
Historically though the disks that came with one Mac model can't be used on a different Mac model of different name or vintage. Whether that changes here, no one knows.
Historically Macs can only run the operating system available at the time they are available, and newer operating systems up to the point the hardware can no longer handle the extras the new operating system offers. So if you wait until Leopard comes out to buy a MacBook, and your third party software has not been tested on the final release of Leopard, you may find incompatibilities. If you must get Leopard, get your new machine once you know that it is compatible with Leopard, but comes with Tiger, if you know all your software is compatible with Intel version of Tiger, or wait until all your third party software you depend on has been tested with the final release of Leopard as it ships and not just the developer preview. Since Leopard has not yet been released, nor have its compatible machines been announced you'd still be guessing when making such a plan.

hi. i am wondering if i could buy MAC OSX 10.6 SNOW LEOPARD and put it into my windows Computer and erase windows and put MAC on it? i just bought an. HP Pavilion Slimline about 1-2 weeks ago. and it has. AMD Athlon II X2. With NVIDIA Graphics With Cuda.... Will it work??? please let em know....
Snow Leopard requires an Apple Macintosh with an Intel CPU. I doubt that even with extensive, license-breaking hacks you could get it to run on an AMD CPU.

I have a 2009 Macbook Pro with Apple Mac OS X 10.5, Leopard on it and I'm starting to get annoyed with the fact that some stuff is not compatible with this OSX anymore. I would like to be able to upgrade to Mountain Lion or Lion but without having to fork out £15 on Snow Leopard when it won't get used, or should I upgrade to Snow Leopard and not bother about upgrading to Lion or Mountain Lion.
Thanks in advance

Should I upgrade Intel Core Duo 1 Mac Mini (2006) to Snow Leopard?
Okay I have a 80 GB Apple Mac Mini with Intel Core Duo 1 proccessor that shipped with Mac OS X Tiger (10.4.7) currently running 10.4.11 that I want to upgrade to either Leopard or Snow Leopard in a few months just in time for Christmas which I acquired in September 2006. It was the first Mac Mini model to include Apple's Front Row software and shipped with an Apple Remote (I know Macs don't ship with Apple Remotes anymore you have to buy them separately) and am now pondering an update. I've heard some things about Snow Leopard not working so well with older Macs even Intel based Macs that are only 32 bit.
Thing is I just got a new MacBook Pro that shipped with Snow Leopard and it seems to run fine on the MacBook Pro except for the fact a few applications I wanted to install wouldn't work with Snow Leopard like Google Desktop for Mac so was wondering if I should update the Mac Mini also to Snow Leopard. I do not particularly like how Apple removed the transcoding features to export video from one format to another in QuickTime X that was available to QuickTime 7 Pro users (actually reinstalled QuickTime 7 Pro on my new MacBook Pro so I can still use that despite QuickTime X being installed) but like Expose integrated with the Dock Menu that's new in Snow Leopard and features like Cover Flow built into the Finder (available also in Leopard along with Spaces) so if I update the Mac Mini should I update to Snow Leopard or Leopard?
This is a 2nd generation Mac Mini (the 1st generation had PowerPC chips) with Mac OS X Tiger and I've heard some negative news about upgrading Mac Mini to Snow Leopard so I want to get some more feedback on whether or not its worth it. The Mac Mini came with iLife and iWork 06 versions but updated iWork to iWork 08 Family Pack. Still have iLife 06 though and am still running iTunes 8.2.1 on the Mac Mini.
I use this computer as my main system for syncing with iPods (I have a 5th gen video iPod and a 2nd gen iPod Touch that I sync with the iTunes Library on my Mac Mini which includes videos purchased earlier from iTunes Store and music purchases as well as TV purchases) so don't want to risk messing up the system with a Snow Leopard update if it is going to cause problems doing so. If Snow Leopard is not good for the Mac Mini will just update to Leopard and stick with Mac OS 10.5 Leopard on this system.I upgraded my mac mini 1.5GHz core solo to a Core 2 Duo 1.8Ghz in order to run most of SL's 64 bit stuff. I bought a pulled Core 2 Duo from ebay for $29 and it took about 1.5 hours to do the switch.
The main downside with the 2nd gen Mac Mini is the kernel cannot run in 64 bit mode due to a 32 bit controller that cannot be upgraded. Yet, booting into 32 bit kernel is SL's default setting and as you may have read in articles when SL came out, relying on a 32 bit kernel does not slow down use of 64 bit apps. I maxed RAM to this mac mini's 2 Gig limit years ago which is a good thing for you to do too.
I am happy to report the upgraded Mac Mini runs much faster than originally thanks to the 2 gig of RAM and the Core 2 Duo chip. Installing SL made it run faster still and consumption of memory for apps is lower (smaller pipeline requirements with faster CPU), and about 14 GIG of HDD space was recovered since I did not reinstall Xcode tools. I can now encode 1.5 hour long video files that used to take overnight processing time. CPU runs hotter, up to 89ºC, but usually run only about 10º higher on average than before while fan rev's not noticeably more than before between 1500 to 1800.
If you are not comfortable to upgrade the CPU, I think you will still find some benefit to SL for $25. Alternatively you could sell your Mac Mini on ebay (these 2nd gen model are popular for those want to do the upgrade) and use the proceeds to buy a refurbished current gen Mac Mini. -
Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard Install Failed
Trying to upgrade a Power Mac Dual G5 from Mac OS X Tiger to Leopard 10.5. When I try to install the Leopard Disc, I keep getting an "Install Failed" message. This is what is said:
Install Failed
Mac OS X could not be installed on your computer
The source media you are installing from is damaged. Try installing from a different copy of the source media or contact the manufacturer for a replacement.
Click restart to restart your computer and try installing again.
Now, I've used this disc once before for an upgrade on a laptop and worked fine, just started to fail when used on the G5. The disc is not scratched, nor looks damaged. Not sure why it's saying damaged? Any insightful knowledge would be appreciated.
Thanks! The install disks I have are the ones he got with his Mac Mini. Are there different install disks for iMacs? On the disks themselves, it says "for Mac computers."
Do I have to buy an OS which is specifically for iMac?
The discs that came with his computer have only the necessary software pieces needed to run his computer--it lacks the drivers that would be needed run your iMac. (In addition, installing the same copy of the OS on two computers would be a violation of the license, even if it worked.)
You need to buy a retail version of Leopard or Snow Leopard. Since your iMac has an intel processor, you can buy the cheaper Snow Leopard ($29) from the "Store" tab at the top of this page or anywhere that sells Mac software. -
I used Roxio VHS to DVD for Mac (have iMac with Snow Leopard) and the audio does not synch with the video when playing in iMovie. Any suggestions to fix?
Thanks for the reply. I tried playing with detaching the audio in iMovie, but with 20+ hours of video to correct, it would take too long. After 28 hours, Corel/Roxio tech support replied that it is a known bitrate mismatch problem and they have no real fix. I strongly suggest not to buy this product.

Want to Buy Mac Mini.... HELP!
I want to buy a mac mini, but my fear is that it says it comes with Tiger as the OS. Anyone with experience? If this is the case... I will be very unhappy.
Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Some applications still aren't Leopard compatible. Some even have issues with Adobe CS2 and CS3 compatibility and Leopard. So depending on your application needs, you may find having Tiger to be advantageous. If you get a Mac Mini that preshipped with Leopard, you'll have no option to downgrade back to Tiger if you find a necessary application is Tiger only compatible.
PowerPC Mac Minis also have another added advantage, and that's Classic compatibility up through 10.4.11. There is no Classic compatibility in Leopard.
Note, Classic doesn't have full Mac OS 9 driver support, but there are many older software titles that work just fine in Classic, but don't work at all in 10.5.
So before complaining about Tiger only being on your Mac Mini determine if there is any software which requires Leopard in your collection. If not, don't panic!
Many third party software vendors offer Leopard like features on Tiger compatible software.
Finally if you have a big enough internal hard drive, you can dual boot into both Tiger and Leopard on your Mac for compatibility to both operating systems.
Note, 2 USB port Mac Minis are PowerPC. 4 USB port Mac Minis are Intel. Compatibility with Windows applications is better with Intel Mac Mini, plus more built-in RAM makes it easier to install Leopard.
Whatever Mac Mini you get, be sure to get the original prebundled software, as they contain a good hardware test program, and bundled software that does not ship with the operating system retail. -

Using Mac Mini with Macbook on Leopard?
I'm thinking about getting the new Mac Mini. I noticed on the website that it comes with Snow Leopard pre-installed. However, I have a 2008 Macbook that is running on Leopard. Will I have to upgrade to Snow Leopard in order to use the Mac Mini?
The Mac Mini comes with Snow Leopard preinstalled.
Leopard and Snow Leopard can communicate with each other just fine.
The only thing to note, is you can't install Leopard on the Mac Mini to run applications that won't run on Snow Leopard. You can make a screen sharing in iChat between the two machines, or a VNC connection to be able to peer in on the MacBook's Leopard, but the processing will still be done on the MacBook.
You don't need to upgrade the MacBook to Leopard, unless there is some hardware that is required by an application that is found on the MacBook, but not on the Mac Mini, and the software in question requires Snow Leopard to run. In that event upgrade the MacBook to Snow Leopard with these precautions in mind*:
http://www.macmaps.com/upgradefaq.html
Also you can't use the Mac Mini's prebundled Snow Leopard discs on the MacBook to install Snow Leopard. You must buy Snow Leopard retail separately.

To use Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger, your Macintosh needs:
* A PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor
