Buying memory and driver separatley.

First off, thanks for the advice on holding off on buying a MBP for now. So basically now that i have decided that i will buy one but in early september, i have been doing research to familiarize myself with the product etc. So two new questions:
1) there is the 100GB @ 7200rpm, and the 120GB @ 5400rpm. But seagate has released a 120GB @ 7200rpm and its only 49.90, which is a steal, so i think im going to buy it. But only if its compatible and it won't screw anything up, so my question is, is it compatible with the new MBP?
2) Also, ive realized u can save a lot of money by buying an MBP with 1gb and then buying a 1gb chip separately, which is wut im going to do, so my question is, where should i buy it and which one should i buy?
Thanks, sorry again for all the questions, but i am new to apple and need some help.

First the easy one. I always buy memory from Crucial (Micron). That is one of the brands that Apple uses, and it is competitively priced, and usually (most of the time) works fine with the MacBook Pro. Apple's machines can be a bit touchy about their RAM, so cheap no-name brands are to be avoided. Crucial has always been great for me.
http://www.crucial.com
As far as the hard drive is concerned. MacBook Pro's can have their hard drives changed, but it is not a procedure for the faint of heart. While not as difficult to take apart as, say, an iBook, they are still a challenge. That being said, what is the model number of the Seagate, so that I can look it up. There are two considerations as to whether this will work in the MacBook Pro. The amount of current it draws, and the physical size. The MacBook is one slim portable, and typical of modern laptops, stuff is really jammed in there good. The heat dissipation might be a consideration as well.

yes you can do it and not void the warranty.  Those are the only hardware changes that Apple permits.  Instructions on how to upgrade the ram and remove and replace the hard drive are even included in the owners manuals for MacBook Pros.

Hey so I want to get a macbook pro 13 in. and I want to upgrade it by putting in more memory and a better hard drive, but I want to buy parts from a different site because it is so much cheaper. Is it easy to take out and replace the memory and hard drive of a macbook pro?

Just make sure the RAM you're buying is brand name and match the specs of your macbook.
Getting cheaper RAM modules sometimes cause issues with the way your Macbook peforms.  Learned that lesson when I decided to buy Kingston Value RAM.  Had nothing but trouble.
Stick with brands like Crucial ( which I use ), Corsair, Mushkin, Kingston (non value) and from OWC.
As for the hard drive, stay away from Western Digital Blue edition, some macbooks have issues with them.
Also make sure you buy an external USB enclosure so you can clone your drive before you intall it and install your old drive in the USB enclosure and use it as your backup drive.
If you're technically capable, it quite easy swapping out the RAM and Hard Drive.
Do the clone first before you do anything else.  That way, when you're done the clone, you just have to open up your macbook once to do the swap.
Good luck and hope everything goes smoothly for you.

  • Extending memory and hard drive space

I would like to wait for the next gen Intel to come out before upgrading my one year old power book. I understand there will be the Core 2 duo coming out in new Macs. i will wait. In the mean time I would like to increase my memory and internal hardrive space, cheaply so programs are not running so slow when more than one or two are open. My question are:
    1. How much more mem can I add to the 512mb I already have? I know I have two slots and only one is being used.
    1. a. Is this something I can do myself? If so, is there a apple article on how to do this.
    1. b. What is the cheapest I can buy and where do I Order. ( I would appreciate link)
    2. How much more internal Hardrive space can I add? It says I currently have total of 74 gb with 71 gb being used.
2.a. Do I really need to increase intranal hardrive space if I just increase memory? Will memory be enough to take care of sluggishness?
2.b. if I increase my internal Hard drive will this be like getting new computer and have to but all my stuff back onto new and larger hard drive.? or is there an extra slot to add another hard drive.
    2.c. Same as 1, a & B

    powerbook g4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Hi 10smom
    1. Up to 2GB, consisting of a 1GB in each each slot.
1a. Yes, see this link for instructions.
1b. Cheapest memory is not necessarily the best option to choose, although buying online will probably get you the best deal. You should choose memory that is the most compatible. A lifetime warranty is also something to look out for. Amongst the brands favoured by people are Crucial, Kingston and Samsung although I have tended to use Crucial.
    2. Currently the largest capacity hard drive for notebook computers is 160GB, although I'm not sure if the limit for your PowerBook is 128GB. However a significant factor of your PB's current "sluggishness" is due to the fact that the internal drive is almost full. You need to either delete or archive off (and then delete) a lot of files. Normally the recommendation is to keep between 10%-20% of free space.
2a. Increasing both will help, but you can always start with just a memory upgrade (plus it's easier to do). See point 2 and 2b regarding the "sluggishness".
2b. Yes, but not quite. If and when you purchase a new drive, also purchase an external FireWire drive enclosure to house the spare drive. You can clone the data from one drive to the other prior to installation into your PB. After installation you can then re-clone in the opposite direction. If all is well you can then carry on using the newly upgraded PB as though nothing has happened. As an added bonus you can use the old drive (with the external enclosure) as a backup drive.
2c. Up to 128/160GB. Manufacturers to choose from are Hitachi, Seagate, Western Digital, Samsung, Fujitsu and Toshiba. A hard drive upgrade will invalidate the Apple warranty (if it has not already expired) - but online instructions are available here for the hardy. Otherwise you can get an Apple Authorised Service Provider to do the installation for a relatively small fee. There is no second drive bay, but purchasing an external FireWire drive enclosure serves that purpose.

  • I have an iMac 5.1 with Mac OSX 10.6.8 and 2 GB memory and an L2 cache of 4 GB.   lately I have been receiving error messages of " start up disk almost full; please delete files." is the start up disk the same thing as the hard drive?

I have an iMac 5.1 with Mac OSX 10.6.8 and 2 GB memory and an L2 cache of 4 GB.   lately I have been receiving error messages of " start up disk almost full; please delete files." is the start up disk the same thing as the hard drive?  I opened the hard drive and from the column on the left of the menu I've selected "search for" and under that " all images" then "all documents"  I've deleted a few files from each. Are documents and images that I have deleted from here also deleted from the folders on my desktop?

You should never, EVER let a conputer hard drive get completely full, EVER!
With Macs and OS X, you shouldn't let the hard drive get below 15 GBs or less of free data space.
If it does, it's time for some hard drive housecleaning.
Follow some of my tips for cleaning out, deleting and archiving data from your Mac's internal hard drive.
Have you emptied your iMac's Trash icon in the Dock?
If you use iPhoto, iPhoto has its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you store images in other locations other than iPhoto, then you will have to weed through these to determine what to archive and what to delete.
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive to disc, flash drives or external hard drive, older emails you want to save.
Delete any other mail in your Junk folders. Also, look through your Sent Mail to see if there is anything that can be deleted.
Other things you can do to gain space.
Once you have around 15 GBs regained, do a search, download and install OmniDisk Sweeper.
This app will help you locate files that you can move/archive and/or delete from your system.
STAY AWAY FROM DELETING ANY FILES FROM OS X SYSTEM FOLDER!
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive to disc, flash drives, ext. hard drives or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Look in your Applications folder, if you have applications you haven't used in a long time, if the app doesn't have a dedicated uninstaller, then you can simply drag it into the OS X Trash icon. IF the application has an uninstaller app, then use it to completely delete the app from your Mac.
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
When you install and launch it, let it do its initial automatic tests, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run the maintenance tabs that let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
move these files/data off of your internal drive to the external hard drive and deleted off of the internal hard drive.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be archived or moved, also, to the optical discs, flash drives or external hard drive and then either archived to disc and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.
    Good Luck!

If you have a considerable photograph and/or movie collection you may want to consider off loading those to the EHD too. Here are Apple's article showing how handle iTunes & iPhoto libraries.

    Hi,
The right part number for the hard drive kit is 681976-001. The support website for the laptop is on HP Sweden so run the part number on google.co.uk (or your Swedish). I have found the cheapest on us amazon for $38 or £42.

My MacBook Pro just had a new memory and solid state drive installed. Since the installation, the Lightroom tools are now all grey. Even the color sliders are grey. Please help!

My guess is that your operating system got updated to Mavericks and that you are running an old version of Lightroom:
Sliders are white, look different | Mac OS X 10.9 Mavericks
Be aware of a Lightroom bug with color management in mavericks that makes shadows too deep in the Develop module: Jao's photo blog: Serious color management bug in Mac OS 10.9 "Mavericks" and Jao's photo blog: Further quantification of the Mavericks color management problem.

as for the fast internet connection - that all depends on the service plan you have with your ISP.
