Buying new laptop $3000.00 suggestions ??

I have been looking to buy a new laptop but I see MacBook Pro still has the pre take over Ati/AMD X1600 old graphics card.
I have also looked at the old XPS m1710 for the same price and it has the Nvidia 7950 = 2x 7900gtx cards in one.
Any idea what will be the best buy for me.
I do browse the internet on my 3 year old mobile phone so I will mostly need it for folding at home type of app's + games and maybe some OS compiling in xen or vmware /tiger equavalent type of program.

Any help will be appreciated.

If you know your will be playing a ton of games more
than anything else, don't get the MacBook. For
starters, very few games run on MacOSX and even
though you 'can' install bootcamp to boot from
windows, there's no point in buying a macbook if 90%
of your time is spent in windows.
If you play world of warcraft, you'll be fine, but if
you plan to play ever new game that comes out that
requires 7900+ graphics cards, stay away from the mac
(and possible think about just getting a ps3/xbox360).
After doing some research I came to the same conclusion.
Mac is not yet a solution / alternative to my problem.
Darn if only there was a way of getting away from Windows and still be able to play games or at least have it running natively on Mac like cedega for linux but even that does not bring the bacon home for new games.
Maybe Apple can buy Cedega like they did with Intel and provide games / games support for Mac then 90% of windows user's will switch.
When will Apple get serious about computing again. I love Apple and my mother swears life/death by Apple but it seems to be utterly useless for me.
DARN DARN DARN.

I have had two previous work MacBooks that died and both were authorized, however, now I can't reauthorize my new laptop because I have reached my limit of 5 systems authorized when technically, I only have 3 authorized.  Any suggestions?

Deauthorize all, then authorize the active computers.

  • Looking to buy new laptop?

I am in the market for a new laptop. Something I can use to surf the web, iTunes for music, nothing crazy, but still want something with a fast processor and decent graphics. Which models should I take a look at? Thanks

    Hi motherof4kids,
That is a good question and there is a lot to consider.  A lot of laptops should be able to help with your standard kind of school work (unless you are going to school for video editing, which you might need something more powerful) and also download music.  When it comes to gaming, a good video card, memory and processor are probably the top things I look for.  It also depends on how much you are looking to spend on your laptop.
League of Legends doesn't require a whole of graphics, however World of Warcraft can, depending if you want to run on Ultra or not.  Without knowing exactly how much you are looking to spend, something I can recommend is to check out BestBuy.com and type in "laptop".  When looking all "all laptops" you can narrow your search in the left hand column to specifications you'll need.
You can put your price range in there and then compare the specifications to WoW (since that will be the most resource heavy application you are looking to run).  WoW requires a 1.3GHz process, 2 GB's of memory and a 32MB video card.  More than this will certainly help the performance of your game.
I hope that this helps and gives some guidance and let me know if you have any questions.

  • Replace DV4 1313dx processor or buy new laptop?

I have a DV4 1313 dx with vista 64 and an amd processor .  The processor needs to be replaced. Trying to find what processors I can use or to find out if this is a waste of time and I should just buy a new laptop. Thanks

    Hi:
If you are sure it is the processor that is bad and not the motherboard, below is the link to the service manual for your notebook.
    http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01597750.pdf
Supported AMD processors can be found in chapter 1 page 2.
Then see what is available on eBay in used but tested and working condition.
    Chapter 4 provides the R & R procedures.

  • Having problems charging my ipod shuffle on my new laptop.  Any suggestions?

Having challenges getting my Ipod shuffle to charge on my new laptop???
When I plug it into the USB the lights blinks orange and then goes blank?

USB ports are notoriously iffy, especially those on keyboards.  Try a port right on the CPU.  If you've already done that, this may be a good investment.

I have Comcast internet on my desktop presently, have a older laptop without wi-fi, want to replace with a new laptop, what should be looking for, for ram and hd, etc.  What router is needed, considering the desktop will remain also on Comcast as well as the new wi-fi capable laptop.   Am totally confused.

Something like this laptop would certainly meet your needs. It has a good current generation processor, plenty of RAM, a 15.6" screen and a good amount of storage space. ASUS K52F-BBR9
In addition, from what I've seen, while setting them up for clients, it seems like a well built machine.
As far as a wireless router goes a basic one would be fine for the area you're looking to cover and the number of devices you'll have on the network. This would suffice.

  • Can I Upgrade my OS or Should I Buy New Laptop?

OK, so I have been out of the Apple loop for quite some time. This laptop is from 2008. I love it, but the OS is too old. I can't update Firefox or download Chrome. I am a student and need to figure out a solution very very soon as Fall quarter starts next week. The college uses a site that doesn't work well with Safari, it prefers Chrome. So, I can't use my computer to do work. So, a few questions:
    1. Can I upgrade OS? If so, how? Are there problems with this?
    2. Should I just buy a new MacBook Air from Apple?
    3. I have considered buying a MacBook Air used from Ebay, Amazon or Craigslist. Please tell me if you think this is a good or bad idea and why? What to look for on used computer? Being a student, I am obviously trying to save as much money as possible. Some say Ebay is good because of the great buyer protection. Please tell me your thoughts.
I don't use the computer for anything other than school work and searching the web. I don't need anything fancy.
Any insight is greatly appreciated. Thank you very much!

It's a good idea to hash this out with someone at the Apple Store, who can show you the latest gear and its advantages/disadvantages. My responses are only mine; I hope others will chime in.
    1. Upgrade or update? You can't upgrade the OS, but every year, Apple updates the OS and offers features that can be quite appealing. I haven't experienced any problem with updates.
    2. You can buy a new MBA from Apple, but I strongly suggest looking at refurbs; just as good, at a reduction in price.
    3. You're safe with Amazon for the most part, though the price is nearly always retail. You can get a good machine on eBay, but it helps if you know your values and contact the seller before bidding. I don't trust Craigslist. Realize, however, that an eBay item probably won't have much or any of the original warranty, and some sellers may unload less-than-perfect machines. If you to the eBay route, insist on the return period if the machine seems to have problems.
Features you should be aware of? SSD disk size - how much space do you need? Screen size - do you want 11" or 13"? Battery issues - don't expect long battery life, though the 2013 shows an improvemen; assume you'll be using the wall adapter a lot.

  • Need to buy new internal hard drive ~ suggestions of where to buy online?

My 3 year old Mac Mini needs a new internal hard drive. I'm trying to find one online, but when I go to macsales.com for instance, I can't figure out the item I should be buying that will work. I'm clueless.
Is there any online place anyone would suggest in particular?
And what do I look for? Will it say 'mac mini internal hard drive' and will I know it will work in my old mini? (not intel).
Does anyone know of a good place to take to have it installed in the Seattle area?
    Help! Thanks!

With a little experience, replacing the drive on a Mac mini would take a little less than an hour, so I suspect you're being quoted the standard minimum for the job by those two sources. Whether you take that up or do it yourself really depends on your level of confidence. Opening the mini is a daunting proposition since there's no clear way to do it, and the plastic creaks and clicks as it's being levered apart with the putty knives, but it's actually very simple to do. Once the top is off, it is a fairly simply process to get to the drive, remove it, fit a new one and then reassemble. The only common issue from doing this work is failing to reconnect the fan control cable (symptom of having forgotten it is that the fan runs continuously on start up).
I would suggest that if you have a flat, clear table, an hour to spare, two putty knives and a suitable screwdriver, you would likely find it a fairly easy job once you get started. Indeed, you might even think about increasing the system memory at the same time!
One thing I would suggest is that if you have a digital camera, once you have the top open, start taking pictures as you progress through the job. That will help overcome the 'where does this go?' syndrome, should it strike!
In terms of sources of drive, the reason Boece suggested OWC in the first reply is that they have already done the work of figuring out which drives are compatible and which are not. If you are in any doubt about which drive will work and which won't, it would make sense to source the drive from them, knowing it is suitable, than through another vendor where you may be less sure!

  • Vista update voucher together when buying new laptop

As far as i am informed new buyers of a Toshiba Notebook with the pre-installed OEM Windows XP are offered a voucher to recieve a Vista update license for little money as it is offered and discussed between Microsoft and all OEM partners.
This is made possible for those who buy a new notebook or desktop starting 26.10.2006 untill march 2007.with a pre-installed OEM-version Windows XP to offer those costumers the possibility to start with Vista either Home Edition, Professional Edition, or Media Center Edition.
Is this message true? If Yes, do costumers who bought this year a little bit earlier a Toshiba Notebook, because they had to,have also a possibility to obtain this voucher?

    Hey John
I have heard the same info about the Vista credit notes.
    http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/generic_content.jsp?service=EU&ID=2006-09-Vista-Capable-EN
Additionally I have read somewhere in the net that everyone who buy a new Windows XP Pro till March 2007 can get a Windows Vista more or less for free.
But I dont know exactly if its right.

  • Transferring logic 9 to new laptop

I bought an Imac 2 years ago with logic express 9 pre-installed. I am buying a new macbook pro soon and I need to know how to tansger logic express 9 to my new laptop. Any suggestions?

If Apple pre-installed LE9 for you, the installation disc & serial number should be included with your OS and applications installation discs and manuals.  Your license allows you to install Logic on two computers as long as you are the only user and use it on one computer at a time.
If you did not get an LE9 installation DVD & serial number or cannot find it, or if you're hoping to have LE9 pre-installed on your new MacBook using your same license, I think you will need to contact Apple Support:  http://www.apple.com/contact/

  • New Laptop, Software, Printer, Purchase Quandary

    Hi
Any insight would be helpful. I'm considering buying new MacBook Pro with 2.2 Ghz Core 2. Only reason I'm considering new purchase is my printer just died. Looked around in Circuit City for replacement printer. All of their stock is made for OSX 10.3 or better. I'm running 10.2.8 now, and will need to buy 10.3 since the operating system is not a update. If I buy new laptop, I'll also have to upgrade to one of the Adobe CS packages which I should do by August (InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop only). Can I just upgrade my old laptop to 10.3 from 10.2.8? Not sure if all of these software are ready for Core 2 model, or 10.3. Anyone know the answer to my delemma? My other choice is to go to Ebay and buy the same printer that just died. Thanks for any suggestions.

    Welcome To Discussions inovaone!
"Can I just upgrade my old laptop to 10.3 from 10.2.8?"
Yes, if it meets the System Requirements
Mac OS X Versions 10.1, 10.2, 10.3, and 10.4, are complete system upgrades that must be purchased.
Once an OS has been installed, the point upgrades, such as 10.1.x to 10.1.5 (Final) 10.2.x to 10.2.8 (Final), 10.3.x to 10.3.9 (Final), and 10.4.x to 10.4.9 (Pending), can be downloaded for free.
Tiger is available for purchase at The Apple Store (U.S.).
Panther, is no longer available directly from the Apple Online Store, as Tiger 10.4.x is the most up to date OS.
If you know what to look for, a Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs, or a Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD, can also be purchased rather inexpensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, FastMac, AppleRescue, etc.
Be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
Panther is only on CDs, not DVDs.
Unless purchased from AppleRescue, the discs should look exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade, CPU Drop-in DVD, or "This software is part of a hardware bundle purchase - not to be sold seperately." on them.
    Additional info in these links.

Software Update, Upgrade: What's The Difference?
Once Panther 10.3.x is installed, you can use the 10.3.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the final version.
If your Mac meets the Tiger System Requirements, you could also consider installing that, and then use the PPC 10.4.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the current version.
    Panther System Requirements
    Additional Panther Install Tips
Additionally, "Tiger ships on a DVD, but if your Mac doesn’t have a built-in DVD-ROM player, you’ll need CD media. When you buy Mac OS X Tiger, you qualify to purchase Tiger CDs for only $9.95."
Download the Media Exchange Program Order Form Here. Note that the date on that form is March 19, 2007, but the program was extended to reflect Orders must be mailed by June 22, 2007.
I suggest that if you choose that route, call Apple to ensure that is is still available.
AppleRescue, also sells a Tiger installation set on CD.
Shop Carefully, Examine All Documentation, And I Wish You Success!
Buy the new MacBookPro too! But why not wait until Leopard is released for that? Then you'll have two great up-to-date Macs!

  • New laptop spec suggestions for Photoshop and Illustrator

    Hi Everyone!
As I am sifting through the posts regarding laptops - I figured I'd post my own as my requirements are a little different.  I am looking to buy a new windows laptop.  I work with Photoshop and Illustrator and basic office programs like outlook, word and excel.  I have CS2 but will upgrade with the new laptop purchase - so running CS5.5 (or better) Photoshop and Illustrator is required.  I may or may not buy the whole Creative Suite as I only use these and Acrobat.  I want to spend what is required to get the job done well - not more - but I don't want to be cheap either – my laptop needs to work well & not hamper my workflow.  This will be my only computer.  Being efficient is key.  I use Adobe to do graphics for apparel: (embroideries, prints, logos, etc.) and small business (logos, print media, etc.).  I work in actual size – so a lot of what I do is on a 20 x 30 art board.  I do not work on videos – just print media and static artwork.  Suggestions on the specs I will need and/or actual laptop models would be great.  Thanks so much for your help - it is all so confusing!
