Buying or Building the right desktop.
Hello, I've been saving up awhile for a desktop I have after effects cs4 for my laptop but It's just too slow.
So I have a few questions...
1. How much ram is recomened for smooth use?
2. Should I build or buy a Desktop?
3.How much would the total cost would be to build this or buy this Desktop?
4. What should the Desktop have, to Run After Effects smoothly ?
5. idk what else.

2. generally yes, desktops are faster than laptops, and you have more possibilities to upgrade/extend your rig afterwards. Also, most laptops only have room for 1 HDD, and having all files on a single drive will decrease performance drastically.
3. That's not how this issue is adressed. You go the other way around: think of how much you can spend and build a rig around that.
4. - video card with OpenGL 2.0 or later (most newer cards have already 4.0) - pro graphics cards like Quadro generally perform better than gaming cards;
- separate HDD for media/projects (the faster the better); prefferably a 3rd HDD for renders;
- enough RAM (the more the better)
- fast CPU - check http://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html and see what you can afford

P.S. don't cheap out on the mobo, it's the central part of your comp. You get more performance and reliability with a good mobo + slower CPU than cheap mobo + monster CPU

Am I building the right number of pages ?
Hi Everybody, It is my first time here and actually I'm building my very first site. This site will be a portifolio of my jobs. As I'm a multimidia man .. lol and I'm not a teenager ... more lol , I have a lot of jobs to show.
I do graphic design, illustrations, advertising and recently I'm developing a new task to join to all of it, working with video. I want to go beyond the static images.
So I decided to build a website to promote myself. I started making the website with iWeb because I do all my work with Macs and I have no intentions in change plataforms for a website.
I already started and of course the problems and doubts as well. I've already divided the Main menu in 4 "places": Design, Advertising, Illustration and Video. Each one I will divide by clients and in each client I'm planning to put 3 or 4 jobs.
I already have the Design divided in 12 clients, then I realize the number of pages that I will have in the end of all. I started doubting if I was doing the right thing and run to the internet to read someones experience and I found at the Apple Discussion forum these posts:

Are you saying the redirect isn't working or is there a better way than using a redirect?
Another way would be to put all the pages into one site but not necessarily have them all in the default navbar. You could have just the following three title pages in the overall navbar: Design, Illustrations and Advertising.
In each of those title pages you create your own hyperlinks to the pages that would support that area of your expertise. Those supporting pages would not have the default navbar shown but have a Text Based Navbar or just separate hyperlinks to link those common pages to each other and back to the title page.

What does it take to get Best Buy to do the right thing?
I brought my laptop in with a hard drive that was beginning to show problems and asked that they transfer all of the media onto a new drive and install it. I further asked that they not install any new software only keep the original software that was on the laptop. This was noted on the receipt. But because the employee charged me $200 for a years technical service including additional virus protection that he wrote on the receipt that I asked not to include. He now says I did not ask for the correct service. Do you think he sold me the wrong one? One that can't be refunded and gets him a kick back? Do you think just maybe he was expecting me to roll over and pay the additional fee to then transfer the data when I picked up the laptop?
I have already contacted two customer service representatives from corporate that have promised same day return phone calls. I have not heard back from either! Tomorrow I forward all information that I have on this case to the news and to the State Attourney's office. It is my belief at this point that Best Buy has no intention of providing customer service only in delaying, frustrating and hopefully causing those they can to give up. I will not give up, you have my computer, my hard drive, my USB back up, my software, my money and continue to deplete my valuable time. Having been a formerly good customer and owning a business that recommends technology to senior citizens it will be my pleasure to post the poor performance of the technical service, customer service and corporate response to local issues in Melbourne Florida.Greetings TecntEz,

GSTS plans also do not typically include data transfer or backup, and customers must pay an additional fee for these services.

Prosumer looking for the right desktop to edit hd footage...
Hi Everybody,
I have a question for all of you, but before I ask the question I have searched high and low for an answer to my question and although I've found people in similar situations, I need to find an answer for my specific needs. Okay here it goes, I have an had camera Sony Sr11 and I want to edit the footage, somewhat flawlessly, I want it to run as smooth as possible b/cuz my current laptop (dell 1520 2.4 Ghz, 4GB Ram, non-dedicated graphics) isn't cutting it. I'm not a film student or anything I just like to make movies it's a hobby and I do it for family and friends that sort of thing. I intend on using final cut express to get that particular job done, I also have thousands of photos..and I don't plan on putting them on the hard drive of my computer, they're kept in an external hard drive. I like to edit those as well I wanted to use aperture for that. So the two main programs I want to use are final cut express hd and aperture...now for the third thing...I do a little gaming and I mean a little..I play sims 2 and I want to eventually play sims 3...so I want a computer that can run those games at the highest settings...compared to other games I don't think that's asking much but I don't want medium settings I want high settings...
So those are my main concerns...running final cut express, aperture, sims 2 and eventually sims 3...should I get the new Imac 24" 3.06 Ghz or should I bite the bullet save a little longer and get the mac pro with an external screen maybe hp or dell...oh and one more question do you have to be a "computer major" to get the adc discount b/cuz I'm a pharmacy student???

the discount is available to any one who's a registered student w/ a valid ID- check w/ your school bookstore, take your ID to an Apple Store or check out the Education Store here on apple.com for the requirements. the current iMacs are so new, there may not be anyone who has used it for gaming.... but you might want to check MacWorld in a few days to see if they have new Benchmark tests or Reviews that may help you decide about gaming or just keep the Dell for gaming. to edit the HDD, AVCHD, any not tape-based video over Firewire, you will need an Intel Mac & i suggest you get as much RAM as you can afford, try Crucial or OWC to get it for way less than Apple.

A clean install on my MacBook Pro has left me with my icons stuck in the grid on the right side of my desktop. I had the ability to move them and have them stay put in various sectors of the desktop, which I found very useful. The clean install upgraded the OS to 10.6.8 from 10.5.8. I want to move them again but there I see no 'None' option which I think would free them to move where I wish. Has the upgrade deleted that option? Suggestions? I am new to this community and if not new to Mac, I often feel that way. This is one of those times.
Julz11 in NYCI have the same problem on the latest iTunes software and Windows 7. My window is maximzed and I do not see any tab for photos. Seems related to a recent update (IOS7?) as this was there - at least before the very big change to the interface.

Spaces no longer exists in Mountain Lion. The replacement, Mission Control, has a different implementaion but allows similar results.

The FF screen is about 20mm from the left hand edge of the desktop and I can not move it so that I can read the right part of the FF screen
I tried the zoom thing but it still didnt resolve my issue Im gonna try to clarify my issue a little bit more, before the change, my screen when I would surf the web would have the apple logo and safari and file and edit and view buttons at the top left hand of the screen and the upper right hand screen would have the time and the wifi strength and my name and the spotlight box and a volume control but now they dont show while Im browsing the web unless I take my arrow and move it to the very top of the screen then those boxes will drop down like it used to be but when I take my arrow and move it from the top of the screen it disappears again and ll I get is a back and forward arrow and the url input bar. Anyone else have any ideas of what I did to mess this up?

For no apparent reason my Mac (2 GHz PowerPC G5) running 10.4.11 has put a mesh-like pattern over the folders on my desktop and also a band of the same pattern across the top of the screen and down the right-hand side over the dock. (See screen grabs below.)
It doesn't affect any operations but makes folder names and drop-down menus difficult to read through the pattern.
I'm not aware of changing any settings so suspect I must have clicked on something without noticing. How do I get rid of the overlaid pattern, please?Information about my computer is as follows:

I tried a reinstall and it still doesn't display the opened Firefox. All the fixes require me to be able to access Firefox and I can't. This only happens with Firefox. Explorer would work fine but I hate using it. What do I do?
Do you get the Firefox when you right-click the icon on the Windows Task bar and maximize the window?

I do not think there is an app for that..... Yet. Part of the difficulty is the 'sandbox' nature of apps. One app cannot open another app. ( with a few controlled exceptions)

No, absolutely not. You are buying only the rights for personal use only. If you want to use a track in a video, you need to 1) get the track from a CD since the iTunes Store disallows any sort of commercial use and 2) obtain a license from the content owner to use the track in a video. There are usually clearing houses for that purpose that handle licensing for the major record labels.
