Buying used Macbook Pro w/2 mths warranty left...can I extend w/Applecare?

I'm looking at buying a used Macbook Pro. Warranty runs out in June. I am wondering if I can purchase Applecare as long as I do it before June & if I can, what I need/how I go about doing so? Thanks.

I strongly advise AGAINST buying Apple Care on ebay or anywhere else besides an apple authorized reseller or official apple store.
As long as you buy the AppleCare for MacBook Pro package it will be usable with your machine.
All codes are listen in apple's database, if you try to register an iPod applecare with a macbook pro it will just tell you that it failed. A lot of frauds on ebay, the packaging and codes are just made up and/or already used once before and therefore unusable.
It costs a bit but applecare is definitely worth it.

    Mandeep,
Looking online right now it seems the policy has changed. Before there used to be AppleCare and AppleCare+. I don't know if the original AppleCare I was talking about still exists or not.
    The policy is described here:
    http://www.apple.com/support/products/iphone.html
    There it says:
AppleCare+ must be purchased within 30 days of the date you bought your new iPhone. If you did not purchase AppleCare+ with your iPhone, you may purchase it at an Apple Retail Store. To buy AppleCare+ at an Apple Retail Store, a Genius will first need to verify your iPhone purchase date and confirm that your iPhone has no pre-existing damage.

  • Buying Used Macbook Pro; Need Security Advice

    Howdy--
While on vacation last week, my sister in law accidentally spilled water on the table that ran into the back of my early 2011 13" i7 MBP.  My wife and I have the same machines, so I was able to remove the SSD and RAM to the her machine, which tested fine.  I then took the machine down to my local Apple dealer (TD Curran) and they confirmed that the machine is basically a brick.  They suggested that I start with the logic board replacement ($530 + $150 = $680), but that other components may have failed, too--so this number could grow higher.
So I looked at my local Craigslist postings to see if there was a similar machine, and I found a couple.  Here is where I need your help:
    1.  I plan on wiping whatever drive they have and using it in the DVD bay as a secondary storage device and using my SSD as the primary hard drive.  If the laptop ends up being stolen and the original owner locks the machine down somehow, are they only able to do that if the original hard drive is in place?  I'm only buying the machine for the non-hard drive/RAM components, but would these components somehow allow the original owner to lock the machine down?  This is already a giant S&*T burger for everyone to eat, and I'm certainly not interested in paying $500-1000 for a used machine that is effectively bricked because it was stolen.  What are my options?  What should I be on the look out for?  Is remote lock out only possible if the original hard drive is still in place?
    2.  I have the original installation DVDs that came with my early 2011 machine.  Will these work on any early 2011 machine or will they only work on my machine?
    3.  If the used machine is a late 2011 machine without the installation disks, are there any options for either getting these are burning new ones?
I understand that this might be a time to upgrade from my i7 chipset, but I am not willing to give into the glued RAM in the newer MBP machines.  Therefore, I want to stick an older machine where I can still get at the RAM--and the SSD--with relative ease.
Thanks for your help, and please let me know if I can answer any questions.

I tend to agree with you.  However I'm in a pinch and I need a solution, which given my circumstances is a used machine off Craigslist.  I'm trying to figure out what that might mean if the machine gets locked somehow.  I spoke with my local Apple dealer, and they indicated that I might want to make sure that the machine's password is reset via the Security and Privacy settings, make sure FileVault is turned off and that they are logged out of iCloud and that my iCloud login details are entered and accepted prior to leaving with the laptop.
Would you agree that these items should safeguard me against the machine getting locked out if it does end up being stolen?
Would you recommend any other preemptive steps.

  • What to look for when buying a used MacBook Pro? Tips

Here to acquire a few tips on purchasing a used Macbook Pro. I am not graced with an Apple Store in my area, so I must rely on my own sub par geek wit and with the help of yours.
    Tips I know.
Checking Battery Cycles and mAh capacity.
    Looking for third party applications.
    Request the original StartUp/Install Disks.
    Checking memory ratios...

Shop your local and nearby Craigslist websites, starting with:

Read this excellent post by frequent contributor JasonFear about buying and selling through Craigslist:

    Avoid Ebay.
If third-party applications or other software are included, they add nothing at all to the value of the machine unless you are given the original installer discs for them. Otherwise, they are just pirated software that you can't reinstall if you ever need to.

  • Buying a Used MacBook Pro

    Hey All!
I had my MacBook Pro stolen a few days ago. I am looking to buy a used MBP from a trusted friend. He, however, has not purchased an AppleCare plan for his computer. He purchased his computer 8 months ago.
My question: If I purchase a used MacBook Pro, am I still able to buy an AppleCare plan within the first year of the original purchase of the machine?
    Thanks for your help!

    Yes.

  • I have an iMac with Microsoft Office and an HD - Time Machine. I'm buying a MacBook Pro and I want to know that if I use the Time Machine to transfer all my stuff the Microsof Office will work or if I need to reinstall it with another licence ?

I have an iMac with Microsoft Office (and several other licenced softs) and an HD - Time Machine that backup all the stuff. I'm buying a MacBook Pro and I would to know that if I use the Time Machine to transfer all my stuff, the Microsof Office will work normally or if I need to reinstall it with another licence?

You do not need a new license. The license file will be found in /Library/Preferences/ and is named, com.microsoft.office.licensing.plist. Be sure it gets transferred and you will be fine. I see no reason why the file would not be in your Time Machine backup nor any reason why it would be restored.
Please visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine. You may need help figuring out how to restore your current backup to a new machine.

  • I'm about to buy the MacBook Pro Retina 15 inch in USA. I will be using predominantly in Europe. What accessories should I be buying?

We can't discuss what Apple is going to do or new products, but it does make a lot of sense if your gut feelings tell you to buy now.
I got a really bad feeling and ran out and got the last of the 17" MBP's with anti-glare and Snow Leopard.
Turned out I was right in listening to my gut, the abortion of OS X Lion came out killed my 15", Cupertino HQ was pwned by Flashback and Apple pulled the 17" MBP completely off the market.
Apple has purposely put the Retinas front and center in their stores, so the majority of the know-nothings buy those. If they thought a bit about buying a machine with future options in upgrade options they would, like you, choose the non-Retina.
Really if you want choice in hardware, your going to have to switch to a PC. As you can pretty much get anything you need on that platform. Apple's hardware choices have been sealing up and their OS X is turning into iOS, soon it's going to be nothing more than a dumbed down iPad.
Windows 8 Pro can be downgraded to Window 7 even, and since Win 7 is supported until 2020, you should be set for quite a few more years. The choice of software is vast on Windows and it's sort of the next eveolutionary step up actually.

  • Buy a MacBook Pro using Educational discount and ISIC

    Hi,
I'm a Brazilian student and i'm traveling to US this month. Could I use my ISIC(Internacional Student Identity Card) to buy a MacBook Pro with Educational Discount?
Sorry for my poor english, I'm still learning this language.
    Thank you.

    Terms and Conditions:
Those eligible to purchase from the Apple Store for Education Individuals include faculty, staff, students and parents as follows:
K12 - Any employee of a public or private K-12 institution in the United States is eligible. In addition, school board members who are currently serving as elected or appointed members are eligible. PTA or PTO executives currently serving as elected or appointed officers are eligible.
Higher Education - Faculty and staff of Higher Education institutions; and students attending, or accepted into a Higher Education institution are eligible to purchase. Purchases from the Apple Store for Education Individuals are not for institutional purchase or resale.
It says that just who studies in a American K-12 institution is eligible for the discount. But I study in a Brazilian University, and for this I think that there is no restrictions. I just need to confirm this information.
    Could anybody help me?
I don't live in the USA, that's why I cant call for an Apple Store and ask this for them.
A MacBook Pro here costs something between 2000 and 2500 dollars, that's why I want to buy one in the US this month.

2.4ghz is plenty of processing, if it means you'll save money over the 2.7ghz. I'd have suggested 2.7 if you also do heavy video editing/rendering using FCP, etc... but the spec you have is plenty

  • Buying a Macbook Pro in the States and using it in the UK

    Hi everyone,
I am in America at the moment and was thinking of taking advantage of the exchange rate with the dollar. If I was to buy a MacBook Pro here in America would I have any issues with it in the UK?
I know we have different power supplies, will the MacBook over heat in the UK or does the power adaptor transform the power before it goes into the Mac?
Are there any other problems that I may have with it?
    Thanks,
    Jamie

I have purchased my MB Pro in Canada, and I have received service in the UK without any problems.
If you decide to seek service at the Apple Store, I strongly recommend Pro Care. I have walked into many Apple Stores worldwide, and I have been treated like a king because of it.
