Buying used Vision Box pros/cons

Thanks to all the info on my other thread[on demand], before i fully committ to getting Vision a friend of mine has a box [black] 1yr old and no longer uses it as he said it was a nightmare! so am looking to buy off him or at least try it out first before a am stuck with a 12 month sub' would i be able to do this? os would it just pick up Freeview ?
I am aware it is only £40.00 activation for a new box and then my package fee every month but i do not want to end up paying for something that does not work or has constant problems [vo4 etc], My friend lives accross road from exchange and he said he could NEVER get any on demand stuff.
I quite rate the Vision idea /system it's just a shame there seems to be so much troublw with it. Again many thanks.

  • How can I use firefox with pro con latte extention on a linux OS that runs via a USB?

    What linux distro to use?
What version of firefox to use? (Since it has to be compatible with pro con latte)

Firefox tarballs from Mozilla Org use prefs within Firefox for updates. The "toggle" for not automatically updating - '''app.update.enabled''' and where to look for updates - '''app.update.url'''. The first needs to be '''''false''''' and the second could be a '''''null''''' string, do an update can't be found.
''I use both prefs to keep Firefox from updating by itself. I install each new version of Firefox as it is released, and keep the older versions around for reference purposes. Those prefs are the same since Firefox 1.5 came out.''
The versions of Firefox that are part of an operating system installation usually are that OS's own build of Firefox, and don't use the same update setup as Mozilla uses, in most cases. I am not familiar with Cent OS, but Ubuntu and Debian look for Firefox updates and from their own program repository servers outside of Firefox - as with the tarballs from Mozilla.

    Hi,
Your Vision box needs to be connected to your BT BB to boot-up. If it's not connected, it wont.
If you boot your box up whilst it is connected, then disconnect it from your BB, you WILL be able to view your recordings and use the box to watch Freeview. But you won't have an EPG. And you won't be able to record any further programmes on the box. It would basically be a makeshift doorstop.
    Hope that helps.

  • Advice on buying Used/New Macbook Pro

I'm giving some serious thought to buying a macbook pro unibody and I'm trying to decide on whether to buy a near-perfect used machine as opposed to a new one. I'm after a 13" and have no interest in anything larger... actually wish there was a netbook-sized mackbook. And truth be known, if the iPad had a iSight camera built in, I would probably be heading down that pad. The macbook will mainly be used around the house and occasionally at wi-fi enabled off-site locations. We're also eligible for a educational discount, so if I buy new... that comes into play.
If I buy used, I would have to see the machine in person locally, watch it run, use it... and know that it's hopefully still eligible for AppleCare if ownership is transferred? I'd also want the original sales receipt and I might like to opt for one on one because even though I've had my iMac for over a year... I'm still learning.
Having only owned a couple of IBM ThinkPads and a WinBook way back when... I was just curious about whether the mackbooks are reliable and sturdy (my ThinkPad has a titanium frame), and whether its worth it to score a great deal on a gently used one that is loaded with more memory and/or larger HDD and possibly a bunch of apps or spend the same for a base model?

"... whether its worth it to score a great deal on a gently used one that is loaded with more memory and/or larger HDD and possibly a bunch of apps or spend the same for a base model? "
    1. What do you feel is a great deal and where have you seen one?
    2. Anyone who sells you a machine with third party apps needs to give you the original disks or you are both in violation of SLA's. Keep that in mind.
    3. If you buy a used machine and the owner touts it has Applecare you need to make sure he/she purchased the AppleCare from Apple or AASP. Otherwise it's not transferable to you.

  • Buying a New Macbook Pro (Con't.)

Hi i am interested in buying a new macbook pro this summer, please help me.
Can i buy from the online store and then go to pike it up by person as i live in an unsupported country for apple, and i taught to travel to UK and then pike it from there.

Although I'm from the US, I typically go out of the country for 5-6 months of the year. Fortunately, I have AppleCare Protection plan and an authorized apple dealer nearby me. However, let me assure you that unless you go to an apple store for repairs, you wont get the unparalleled quality of service or support that you would otherwise get. I'm not saying that there are not excellent apple authorized dealers out there, it's just the one near me isn't that great. In fact, I try to hold off on all repairs until I reach the homeland.
But still, in your case, if this is the only option than by all means take it. Just be vigilant of repairs claimed, keep you receipts, and check your MBP when it gets back for any damage not caused by you.
This is in the worst extreme. I'm sure, for the most part, most 3rd party service centers are great.
    Good Luck!

  • What is the best camcorder to buy using my MacBook Pro

I just purchased the MacBook Pro (1st time Mac owner).  I am wondering if there is a particular camcorder that would work best for making videos using iMovie.  I have purchased a Sony Handycam AVCHD and googled the reviews.  It seems people have some problems using this camcorder with the MacBook.  Any suggestions.  1.  Will the camcorder I bought be just fine or do I need to return this and purchase a different one.  I just want to record my kids activities and make home movies to send to their grandparents.  Thanks

Which is the best mouse to use with my macbook pro?
"It depends" is the correct answer.
If you love using gestures, you'll want a Magic Mouse or Magic Trackpad.
If you love high precision, a trackball is often preferable to a mouse.
If you love modified mouse actions, a mouse with extra programmable buttons is a good idea.
If you love gaming, a responsive high-resolution gaming mouse is probably best.
If you love graphics/art, it is possible no mouse is best; instead you want a pressure-sensitive stylus and tablet for maximum control over painting and retouching.
No one else can tell you what the best is, unless they share your preferences exactly.

  • There are multiple MAC's in my house and I am considering buying Time Capsule to use as a file sharing device. Is anyone doing this? Pros/Cons?

I have multiple MAC's in my house. I would like to create a file server environmet. I am considering using Time Capsule. Is anyone doing this? Pros/Cons?

The Linksys should be about as fast as the Time Capsule. So you might as well connect the Time Capsule to the Linksys, disable sharing and wireless.
Solution two is to use the TC as the router, wireless and network drive. This would save the power the Linksys needs. What is the Linksys connected to? a separate modem?

How do I use my MacBook Pro to watch exactly what my digital cable box would send to my TV?

You could use Elgato Systems' EyeTV product to view external video sources on your MBP.
There is additional cost involved, but it would achive what you want. You can buy the Hybrid product, and connect your external DVD player via Composite (red, white and yellow connectors) to your MBP via the EyeTV.

You can use XP but it has to be in a Virtual Machine and OS X as the host instead of as a dual boot system with XP in its own partition. That is how I run Windows on my Mac, in a Virtual Machine.
Take a look at VritualBox from Oracle. It's free and works very well.

  • New black Vision+ box upgrade. Is it a con ?

I am a BT option3 customer and have been for some time. I currently pay £5.49 for my BT vision service.
I enquired to find out why I would be expected to pay £199 in order to get the new box. New customers to BT dont have to pay this.
I was told in the reply that the two boxes have exactly the same functions ! If I wanted a new one I could simply take out a new 12 month contract !
The new contract are a minimum of £7.99 per month for three months before increasing to £14.99 per month.
I have no interest whatsoever in any of the so called vision packs as I have more than an enough to watch already.
This increase represents 100% jus for a different colour box !  BT seem intent on conning us or ripping us off !
Has anyone else triedto replace their old vision box with the new one?  I have tried phoning BT but just got send round in circles va several different Indian call cetres, none of whom could answer my query !

It's absolutely not a con because it isn't an upgrade.  It's just cosmetically different and slightly more efficient on power consumption.  Apart from that no difference so not an upgrade therefore if you really really want one you'll have to pay for it.

  • Pros & Cons of Using SAP PI Interfaces for Report Generation

    Hi Guru's
    I have a Scenario's like
I have to generate a customized report in SAP with the main data's available in SAP ECC and some required data available in the Legacy System.
I want to know the Pros & cons of using SAP PI RFC/Proxy adapter interface to get the data from the legacy system for each time the user execute the report in SAP ECC.
    Thanks in Advance

There are couple of "dimensions" to consider in your PI interface design. For exemple when you are running the sizing exercise (Since we are considering adding a net new interface), you will need to capture specific information about new interface.i.e. S/A, adapters, frequency, avg payload size. etc..Note that the last two attributes will be hard to size properly in this case since you can't predict how frequent the end user will run the report which will impact the latency time required to pull the data. Latency will affect the user experience as visible side affect and definitely the SLA for other interfaces running at the same time.
On the other hand, the data you are trying to retrieve from the legacy won't be used for transactional purpose but for the end user to pull KPIs from the system which can affect ECC as well. You may end up doing lot hot fixes for your report (Assuming that the report is a medium complexity code)
There are other factors to consider but let's consider these are the major one.
    Cheers,
    F

  • How do I create a check-box matrix question using Acrobat XI Pro?

I would like to insert a question that is a 10 x 10 matrix that allows respondents to select multiple boxes in each row.  For example, the "add item > rating scale" feature formats a matrix the way I would like, although it only seems to allow for radio buttons.  With this feature, respondents can only select one item per row.  Is there any way to use this feature with check-boxes rather than radio buttons?  Or a different feature to create a matrix that allows for multiple selections per row?
    Thanks so much,
    Andy

I created a 30 page Form in Microsoft Word with 20 to 30 check boxes on each page using the Zapf Dingbats Font.
When I used Acrobat XI Pro to automatically convert the form it fails to create usable check boxes.
It worked properly about 3 times on test pages but it will not do it again.
Manually inserting check boxes one by one on 30 pages is mind numbing to say the least.
Why doesn't the software work properly anymore?

  • Buying a Used MBP/Mac Pro

My wife and I are moving from the US to the other side of the planet next year and we need
upgraded Macs from our present models; she has a Powerbook 12" 1ghz and I am
limping along with a dog of a 2.0 G5 tower.
My wife is happy with her G4 but for anyone else stuck and unable to upgrade
beyond 10.5.8, you know what issues are going on there and will only get worse.
So to keep current with browsing, she'll be wanting an intel laptop, and I'm
directing her towards the 13" Macbook Pro line.
I've had 2 of these 2.0 G5's and both are/were dogs. The first one's power supply died
and the 2nd one that I'm using now has issues with audio, Quicktime and pretty
much any video playback. iTunes will stop spontaneously, and will also do so
whenever I use another app while playing something in itunes, namely songs, etc,
etc.  Since it hasn't caught on fire yet, I'll tolerate it's problems till I can get some
    flavor of a Mac Pro.
We'll be buying used units, as we can't afford new so my question is, of the
Macbook Pro line, is there one model that stands out as a good performer or one that
has shown itself to be problematic?  Advantages/disadvantages of the unibodies?
I'm open to any model, but will probably stick
to the 13" size as my wife likes that.  I'm seeing models going for $4-700 which is
    within tolerances.
The same question applies to the Mac Pro's as to which one/s do well or have a
poor track record. Also is there a site that has info like this? I've already
    googled
    "best mac models",
    "mac performance guide",
    "mac quality guide",
    "mac dependability guide/chart" and appledefects.com is a non-site now w/no new
    posts since '09.
    Thanks in advance!
    Eric

I'm not much of a hardware guy, so I don't feel as though I could give you much in the way of input. But I did notice that you posted your initial question two days ago and my thought was that you might get a better response on the MBP boards. You could also ask about Ebay experiences in purchasing laptops.
Is your current 2.16 a bottleneck? I got by with a 2.0 PPC for years. When I finally upgrade to an Intel processor there was a big reduction in render times and the faster graphics improved playback. But as to how the Core2 stacks up against the i5, perhaps check out Barefeats.
    Good luck.

  • What are pros/cons of using xmarks vs. firefox sync?

Used Firefox for a long while. Bookmarks morphed to Xmarks, which in turn has been acquired twice. I continue to use the newer Xmarks. In process of setting up a new computer, found that Firefox has it's own bookmarks sync.
Like to keep things as simple as possible. Does Firefox sync do all that Xmarks does? What are pros/cons of using xmarks vs. firefox sync?

I am not in a business environment, just my home. So, I don't know your specific requirements. I operate a dual G5 xserve, a dual quad-core mac pro, 6+ Apple MacOSX computers of varying types and several other linux servers plus a couple of Windows machines. If it were me, I would get two mac pro's running MacOSX Server and use one for backup of the other. The xserve RAID is too expensive from my point of view. I copy data from the xserve to several MacOSX computers with firewire drives for my backup and I have every computer on a ups. (I am assuming that they will not all fail at once!
I run Tiger servers and would suggest that you significantly test Leopard before committing to it.
    Hope that helps.
