Buzzing from Genelec speakers, firewire thunderbolt adapter used

I am using a macbook pro 13" retina, thunderbolt output to firewire adapter 800. Fire cable from 800 to 400. Cable connected to Focusrite Sapphire LE, connected to Genelec 8020Bs. Constant buzzing from the moment I turn on the mac, without software loaded. Obviously haven't turned on speakers until laptop is fully running.
Please help as this computer has caused nothing but grief thus far.
Much appreciated.

Furthermore, it buzzes using both thunderbolt outputs and both firewire input to interface. Could be cable or adapter but unsure how to know without buying replacements and returning one?

  • Firewire- Thunderbolt adapter?

Is there a Firewire->Thunderbolt adapter available for the MacBook Pro 17"?
Is there a Firewire->Thunderbolt adapter available for the MacBook Pro 17" or do I have to buy one of those ungainly box things?

The first post says he has a MacBook Pro, and mentioned iMac later, but both do, and you're still right.

  • Feedback from external speakers when Thunderbolt display plugged in. What is this?

I have a set of Logitech speakers that are connected through a regular 3.5mm male to male audio cable. The sound is fine until I plug in my display through the Thunderbolt connection. (It is a VGA->Thunderbolt adapter.) As soon as I plug it in, there is a monotone feedback coming through the speakers, at about half the volume of the rest of the sound. This only happens to the speakers-- when I use headphones, there is no feedback. The speakers don't do this feedback with any other sound source.
Is there possibly a setting I should use to get rid of this feedback? Or can someone explain why this might be happening?

Sounds like it could be a result of less-than-ideal shielding on one or more of your cables. Might see if moving the cables away from each other reduces or eliminates the feedback.
Might also be one or both of the adapters that you're using.

  • No sound from internal speakers or headphones when using ART Tube interface

Hi - can anyone help with this...
I have no sound fromthe internal speakers or headphones when using my new ART Tube USB interface - I get a nice loud recording level from the ART but cant monitor - in Logic 7.2
Audio hardware interface in logic 7.2 is set to USB Codec - just like the ART manual states
And the SOUND control panel is set to speakers/headphones
    But no love...
    Any comments welcomed
    Si2

By default, OSX will only let you have one interface active at any one time - so if you specify the ART as your interface to get sound in, you don't have access to your regular interface to listen to it.
But there is a workaround - open the Audio/MIDI Setup utility, create a new "Aggregate Device", and add both your required audio interfaces to it.
Now, back in Logic, select the aggregate device you created as the audio device, and now all your inputs and outputs from both interfaces are available - the aggregate device acts as one big interface containing both your hardware interfaces.

  • No sound from internal speakers anymore, only can use headphone jack

My Macbook just stopped working with the internal speakers - now no sound... but if I plug in headphones I can hear audio. Also, when I look at the headphone jack, it is lit up red inside! very weird. Anyone know what's going on? It really stinks to have no audio.
I know the speakers still work because when I restart the computer I hear the start up chime.

apple had to service the laptop and replace
    something- but it's fixed
hey. it's not a HUGE problem, although it's cool that you got it fixed. i currently (like, as i speak) have the same problem, but after reading a little bit, it seems that there's a little switch in there that's stuck. it determines whether ther's a headphone jack plugged in or not, and the red light just signals that it's not, but that switch says it is. so will apple really fix it? how long did it take?

  • Bought a new Mac Pro, purchased a Firewire to Thunderbolt adapter, then hooked up Epson Stylus Photo R2400 printer but the system preferences does not see the printer. Started, restarted, hit the " " to add a  printer but no go.

How to connect via Firewire/Thunderbolt adapter an Epson Stylus Photo R2400 printer to a new Mac Pro

When you switch from USB to FireWire, you have essentially installed a new (i.e., different) Printer.
In the Add-a-Printer dialog, delete[-] the existing Printer queue which is set up for USB. Then, with the Printer connected via FireWire, Add [+] a new Printer queue and it should set it up correctly this time.
To go back to USB, you would have to delete and re-add in a similar fashion later.

  • Firewire - Thunderbolt - EDIROL FA101 issue

I just received my brand new custom ordered iMac, but it has only thunderbolt ports. My whole home studio system is based on my EDIROL FA101 Firewire audio interface that worked like a charm through the Firewire port on the older iMac. Now I had to buy an apple made Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter to conncet the EDIROL.
Now its bad... Everything is the same setup, as I use it for years, and it has nothing to do with drivers or Mavericks since the old computer I used until last week had Mavericks too. Now the music stops for seconds frequently in every player, iTunes, VLC, Youtube even Logic pro. Just stops for a sec, than continues and stops again and keeps doing this. (Just to make sure, I returned the Firewire - Thunderbolt adapter to the apple store and they gave me an other one, just to make sure that is not a corrupt adapter)
I have tried everything. First I have switched to BUS mod on the back of the EDIROL menas getting the power from the computer, cause I thought the power coming from the EDIROLs AC adapter and the Thunderbolt adapter is having some conflict but nothing changed, or I've got even more stops and some noise too. Than I pluged AC back on the EDIROL, so thunderbolt is getting it's power from the iMac, EDIROL from the wall, but I still have the issue. Stops, often, than not often. Sometimes I have 10 stops within a minute bot sometimes plays the song correctly... I need some help or advice.
    Thank you guys!

We would have no idea, my suggestion is to contact the developers of the PreSonus StudioLive and see if they support the device in
    OS X Mavericks
    via FW to Thunderbolt cable.
    Good luck.

  • I am using IMovie 11 with a new iMac.  Unable to import video from a Panasonic PV-GS400 mini-DV camcorder using a Firewire IEEE 1394 400 cable connected to a Firewire 400 to 800 adapter which is then connected to a Thunderbolt to Firewire 800 adapter.

How can I get iMovie to recognize my Panasonic PV-GS400 as a device so I can import video to my iMac?  I have a FireWire IEEE 1394 400 cable connected to the camcorder.  Since my new iMac has only Thunderbolt ports, I purchased a Firewire 400 to 800 adapter to connect to the cable.  I also purchased a FireWire 800 to Thunderbolt adapter to connect to the computer.  My camcarder is still not recognized.

I would suggest that you try a 9 pin to 4 pin Firewire Cable along with the Firewire to Thunderbolt adapter.
Those Firewire 400 to 800 adapters do not seem to work well with iMovie.
The 9 pin to 4 pin cables are available at reasonable prices here, for example.

mac was to use a firewire 800 to thunderbolt adapter, or ethernet. Am I correct?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
You can also migrate wirelessly > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4889
However, I recommend you to use FireWire to migrate from your old Mac because it will be much faster than Wi-Fi or Ethernet, so if your old Mac has got a FireWire port, buy the Thunderbolt to FireWire adapter for your Late 2012 iMac and migrate from your old computer

  • Using Firewire to Thunderbolt adapter for Apogee Duet

    My question is two-fold.
I currently run Logic Pro 9 on my mid-2011 I-Mac.  I am looking into purchasing a new apple laptop to run Logic Pro 9 on mainly for the advantage of portability.  From what I have read so far I would benefit from the processing power of a Macbook Pro over the Air.  Does anyone have input on this or experience running Logic 9 on these newer machines?
The second part of my question involves my recording audio interface -- the first generation firewire apogee Duet.  If I were to get a new generation laptop it would not come with a Firewire 800 port.  To circumvent this I would need the adapter linked below:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD464ZM/A/apple-thunderbolt-to-firewire-adapte r
The reviews indicate that it is not great for bus-powered external drives.  Would the Apogee interface be in the same boat as these?
Would I want to trust sending audio signal through and from the computer with an adapter in between?
Any input or experience with this would be awesome.  At worst, I could use a newer laptop for mixing and not tracking.  And then upgrade my audio interface to the newer generation Duet at a later time.
    Thanks!

I've been searching for such a device too. I need to perform a data transfer to MBA from a MBP and FW800 drive. For now, I can hook it up to a MBP and use AirDrop or simple wireless transfer...
This site keeps news on new peripherals: http://thunderboltreviews.com/
The Belkin Dock looks promising, but still expensive. Simple adapters are still aways and the first ones out are going to cost a pretty penny still (~$30-$40 is my guess). The dock from Belkin may be worth the cost in that sense. Except it seems to need an external power source.
Sigh, Thunderbolt hasn't really come out with a bang, but just more of a sizzle...sorry for the pun.
Someone had come up with a concept Apple Thunderbolt Pro Display. It was pretty cool. Built-in discrete graphics card, bluray superdrive, and all the ports you would ever need (among other things). Oh how I wish Apple would be willing to build such a thing.
Anways, let me know if you find a simple TB to FW800 adapter.

  • Trouble using firewire drives via thunderbolt adapter on bootcamped Mac Pro 2013 towers

Here at the university, we've just installed a new classroom of Mac Pro towers (late 2013).  We like to use Bootcamp in said classroom, and so I (painstakingly) installed Windows 8.1 on a test machine.  I've found that the brand new firewire-to-thunderbolt adapters we bought don't seem to work when booted into Windows.  I have few LaCie firewire drives I use to install software packages, and the occasional WD My Book, and our students are encourage to purchase G-Drives to back up their film projects.
I have a couple of LaCie drives that I've partitioned as part Mac OS Extended and part ExFat (or even MS-DOS just in case).   The Windows-friendly partitions don't mount or even get detected, so I think it's the adapter(s) not being recognized by Windoes, especially since the firewire to thunderbolt adapters work on the Mac side.
Could this be a driver problem like what's mentioned here?

Well, no one answered at all, but somehow the problem solved itself.  I'm not sure if one of the automatic Windows updates cleared things up or what, but now I can connect Firewire drives with no problems.  Also, as some kind of bonus, Windows 8 is able to read Mac partitioned firewire drives, which I don't think was possible in Windows 7.
The problem may also have been that I hadn't entered the Windows activation key in yet? I'm not sure that makes sense in terms of Thunderbolt adapters...
10+ years ago, I read a Microsoft tip of the day that said "Problems that go away by themselves can come back by themselves." It's haunted me ever since.

  • Time machine b/u slow using thunderbolt adapter to firewire drive

I have a new iMac and I find that a Time Machine backup is very slow. I'm using an iOmega Desktop HD. It's 2TB, and it has a Firewire 400, Firewire 800, and a USB 2.0 port. I'm backing up TM to the Firewire 800 port, using a Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter cable. I started yesterday, and it still says it will take about four more days to complete the initial backup.
I'm wondering if it will be any faster if I start over using the USB 2.0 port.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

Normally you'd expect USB2 to be 1/3/ to 1/2 as fast as FW/800 at the most.
Open Console in Applications>Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this is happening.

  • HT201338 Can I connect a firewire 400 to firewire 800 adapter and then a firewire 800 to Thunderbolt adapter(standard Thunderbolt to firewire adapter) together to digitize video from a miniDV video camcorder?

I have a 10 year Canon MiniDV camcorder that I used to connect via firewire to digitize the data.  Now my IMac only has a Thunderbolt connector and my camcorder uses the older firewire 400 standard.  I would like to digitize the video into my IMac.  How can I do this?

I did a little looking around and found a Thunderbolt to Firewire 800 adapter, and then a Firewire 400 to 800 adapter, but no Thunderbolt to Firewire 400. Amazon and Apple stores had the Thunderbolt to Firewire 800 cable and Amazon had the Firewire 400 to 800 adapater.
Wherever you get the cables, ask them if it will work OK with what you want to try and do - if they don't know make sure you can return if there is a problem. I think it will because the Thunderbolt side is so much faster than what the camera can pump out to it. If it were the other way (Thunderbolt device to a Firewire computer I would expect that to fail since the Firewire could never keep up with the data rate of the incoming Thunderbolt device).
Maybe if you have a local Mac user group or a friend with an older mac with a firewire 400 port you could do it this way too?
    Good luck
