Buzzing on my harmon kardon speakers hooked up to headphone port

I have an Imac with Harmon Kardon soundsticksII.  Today the speakers have a loud buzz when hooked up.  Tested the speakers by plugging them into my Iphone and they sounded fine.  I tried rebooting the computer , unhooking the speakers and checking all connections, and no change.  The speakers make noise even when cpu is off just not as loud.  The speakers do play music from the computer but with the loud buzz or humming noise as well.  Same speakers and cpu have worked fine together for years, tried all the troubleshooting i can think of but no results.  My friend said my headphone port was probably loose, don't know how that would happen and wouldn't know how to fix or replace the port itself.  Side note, just went and got my headphones and plugged them in- no buzz but the sound quality *****, i'm wondering what do I do now 'cause it seems like it may be the port

Please check again to see if you have connected it correctly I had the same problem and found that I had connected it in the wrong port.

  • HT2494 2012 MacBook Pro - no sound from internal speakers, red light in headphone port

    Mid 2012 MacBook Pro 15".
I normally use external speakers plugged into headphone jack.
The other day I unplugged the external speakers and when I re-booted my Mac, I got the start up sound
but I have no sound coming from my internal speakers.  In System preferences sound output I see no entry for internal speakers.
I also notice a red light shining in the headphone jack port.  I see on youtube that this problem is rather widespread.
Some suggest using a paper clip to try to turn the light out, but I am not doing that.
I have Lion installed, tried using the MIDI-app to reconfigure the speakers, but I only get sound if the headphones are plugged in.
Is this a software or hardware problem?
I have a genius bar appointment today at my local Apple retail store, and my mac is still on warranty but this
is troubling that you spend $2300 for a laptop and after a bit of regular use the internal speakers no longer work.
    Any ideas?
    thanks.

I agree Nick - it is a concern especially on such a basic function (sound) - Linc is right, the issue is microswitch, sounds like a bad design or a huge batch of sub quality switches, checking the forums this issue is common on MBP's.
Judging by the date and lack of further activity I assume you managed to get yours fixed at the genius bar ?
I finally fixed mine myself but posting reply for others who have same issue as this - however buyer beware folks, try this at your own risk !!!
The fix won't be liked by Apple Support, the genius bar, or the repair shops but it worked for me after over 12 months of using headphones / external speakers - WHAT A PIA !
    Method -
Held  Macbookpro on it's side with screen open and headphone/ audio  port facing toward ground.
Took WD40 can with straw dispenser and placed straw inside audio port - sprayed 3 or 4 one second burst of WD40 into port.
Held MBP that way for 30 seconds giving MBP a shake to drain WD40 out
(I performed this whole excercise outside where the WD40 could drain out without an issue ;-)
I then took an old set of headphones and re-inserted / removed them from the audio port approx 20 times in and out with music playing on the MBP -  intially when inserted music will only come from headphones then eventually MBP internal speakers start working !
I've tried everything else including the cocktail stick and bent pin inserted inside the port to try and free micro switch - nothing worked it was stuck fast.
As stated, can't endorse this for anybody else - you do so at your own risk - just stating this is what I did to get mine working again !

  • How to connect 2 bose speakers from my Harmon kardon tuner ?

Hi all,I need some info on how to connect 2 bose speakers (30 serie)?connected to my tuner (harmon kardon)?to my sound card audigy2. Second, I will purchase soon x-fi xtrememusic sound card, will it be the sme way to connected as audigy2 ?Thanks.

Thanks Franktank,Is it right to assume that the "line out" on the sound card is a light green in color? (where you plug a set of headphone)? My Harmon Kardon is 6 years old, 80 watt rms per chanel, and it will be connected to the "AUX" in the back panel. Is the color red on the rca jack is the positi've? If so, I will plug it to the red "AUX" in the back of the receiver? Will this kind of connection will produce stereo sound? Is this the only way to plug 2 speakers on the sound card? Thanks.

  • Harmon Kardon Apple Pro Round Speakers (minijack) and 2008 Mac Pro?

I was told at the Apple Store that I would need to get an adapter to use my Harmon Kardon Apple Pro round speakers (minijack) with my new 2008 Mac Pro. I bought a Stereo-to-stereo 3/32 to 1/8' stereo audio adapter.
    No good... doesn't work.
Is there an adapter out there (preferably at Radio Shack) that's available to get these speakers working on my Mac Pro?

I used to use a iMic(still have it) from Griffin Technology that said it csn be used as a level line out to power speakers. They are here
    http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/imic Maybe call them up,
and I don't see why Radio Shack wouldn't have something similar.

  • Can't Get Sound from Harmon Kardon Soundsticks External Speakers

My Soundsticks have worked fine on my eMac and iBook bow I can' get sound from them. The System Pref has only "Internal Speakers" as an output option. I've zapped the PRAM and fixed permissions with no luck.
What am I missing? They have worked before and all connections from speakers to the iBook headphone jack are fine. Earbuds work.
Any and all help is appreciated.

Do the speakers still work with the eMac?
Have you tried resetting the PMU?
Are you saying that earbuds work with the iBook, while the speakers do not? How can that be if the only output option is listed as internal speakers?

  • Just bought Harmon Kardon soundsticks III cannot get it to work on mac mini

    Hi
Just purchased the Harmon Kardon soundsticks very nice looking but does not work with my mac mini.  Connected it up as per manual instructions plugged it in line in cable to line in but no sound.  Went into system preferences to check to see Input (Line In) Output (Internal Speakers), is there something I am not doing correctly.  My other speakers which has decided to retire through old age was picked up perfectly.  Can anyone help.  Incidentally I am using an audio jack not usb.
    Thanks
    rachealfromva

    Hi,
Thanks for replying, I am unable to change to line out I have no options, the only way that I have been able to get t he speakers to work is by plugging into the headphone jack. Is it possible the sound card is broken?
Any suggestions would be much appreciated
    Thanks

  • GarageBand opens, My Harmon Kardon Bass goes Distorted!

This has been happening for a while, but more so now than before. Anyways, I've noticed a pattern. Everytime I have my Harmon Kardon 20 watt sub plugged in via USB to my 17" Powerbook G4 and am playing music with iTunes and open up GarageBand, the bass turns all crackely and blown. Also, whenever I play or use bass on GarageBand through a hip hop kit or whatever, the bass is blown or distorted. With garageband closed, there is no problem. If I open up GarageBand and the bass goes crazy, I usually have to close GarageBand in order for the bass to return to normal. This usually works. What is going on here? It's driving me crazy, and headphones are no good because they're ruining my ears. Any thoughts or anyone else have this problem?

This is only a guess, because I've not got HK USB speakers: But maybe the master volume in GB is up too high. Take it right down and then turn up your speakers, see if that does it.

  • Harmon/kardon speaker problem in south korea

    hello-
i have a set of harmon/kardon "champagne" speakers (model HK 695) that i bought a few years ago at the apple store. they have worked great since in the states and in turkey, where i had to convert the power source from 220v to 110v. i used a fairly large, plug-in-style converter that had a fuse b/c i was paranoid about blowing the speakers out (i found out later that the bass unit also has its own fuse).
this week i have moved to a new school in seoul, south korea and i have started to have some problems. when i plug the speakers in (with the power source converted to 110v) i get feedback, like wind blowing through the speakers. it doesn't matter if the jack is plugged in to the computer/ipod or not, there is a constant "whoosh-whooshing" sound that is driving me nuts.
what's going on? i haven't had a single problem in 4 years. i'm not very good with a/v stuff, so if anyone has any ideas as to what may be the problem, or more importantly, how to fix the problem, i would appreciate any help.
    thanks,
    jesse
    seoul, south korea
ibook g3 dual usb   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

i'm not sure if the outlets are grounded. it's a brand-new building, completes in may, designed to "western standards." i'll check with the electricians at the school to see if they know.
i've tried several things: different outlets, different converters, with other electronics around it and without. like i sais, no problems in the states or in turkey, where power surges are the norm. i'll check on the mh thing.
if this is the problem, how do i fix it?
    thanks again,

  • HT1515 Harmon Kardon Sound Sticks I & wireless setup

I have Harmon Kardon Sound Sticks I.
It only has a USB cable to connect to computer & after reading discussions the speakers will only work if the usb is connected direct to computer as the Airport Express usb connection does not support it. I have a wireless router and also an Airport Express on hand. Is there any way I can set up my Macbook to play itunes wirelessly to the sound sticks?

I just updated to 10.6.8 and now mine arent working either! I have a quadcore 3ghz intel-Arrrrrrrgh! fix this!!!!!!

  • Connecting Express to Harmon/Kardon Soundsticks

    Hi,
I am interested in the Airport Express but I have the original Harmon/Kardon Sounsticks. They connect to my Mac/iBook with a USB connection. Can I use the USB connector of the Express for these speakers or will I need an audio cable? Also, I have my printer and Soundsticks plugged into a USB multijack adaptor. Can I just plug that into the Express and use both the speakers and printer wirelessly, splitting the USB signal with the adaptor?
    Thom

The only sound output on the Airport Express is the 3.5mm stereo/optical jack. The USB port will only recognise your printer and not USB speakers.

  • HP f1703 Monitor and Harman/Kardon Speakers

I have an HP f1703 monitor that is about nine years old.  It is different from the image on the HP support site for this model number -- mine does not have integrated speakers.  It came bundled with a pair of Harman/Kardon speakers that draw power from the monitor itself (no separate power supply).
A couple of days ago, while using my XP machine, the monitor suddenly began blinking between a black screen and the desktop.  It's a steady blink.  It continues to do this when the VGA cord is not attached and when hooked up to a second desktop.  I used a spare power cable of the same rating and it contines to blink.  It seems safe to state the monitor is a goner.  If there are any simple troubleshooting tips, I'd greatly appreciate them.
But my main question is this:  Since the speakers did not come with a separate power supply, is it safe to use the monitor's power supply with them?  The jack fits perfectly and when plugged in an outlet, there is no intererence, crackling or anything.  I don't want to fry my soundcard or motherboard.
The model number on the speakers is HP 5187-2105.  The power rating is DC 12V 1A.
Any help and/or advice is greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

    Hello FireDragon,
This is an interesting case. I have found the speakers online through Amazon so they are sold separately without the monitor and it comes with a power supply. What I can't find is the wattage the power supply is.
With that being said I can't say for 100% certainty that the power supply can be used, I believe that you should not have any issues though.
I would also say that (and this is probably not the answer you want to hear) speakers can be relatively cheap and you may be better off just purchasing a new set of speakers.

  • Mini solo or Harmon Kardon for DVD player

I own a Harmon Kardon DVD22 and a Mini Solo with the Intel GMA950 graphics card.
Here is the link to the Harmon specs:
    http://www.harmankardon.com/specifications.aspx?cat=DVD&ser=&prod=DVD%2022&sType =H
Here is the link to the GMA950 specs:
    http://www.intel.com/products/chipsets/gma950/index.htm
They are both hooked up to a Infocus 4800 with a 1024x768 max resolution.
Maybe someone can help me compare the specs.
    *My questions are:*
*1. Do I even need the Harmon anymore?*
*2. Does the Mini play the DVD at the same or better quality*

    According to:
    http://myhometheater.homestead.com/viewingdistancecalculator.html
With my 72" width screen and my 10' viewing distance, I should be able to discern 1920x1080.
My projector maxes out at 1024x768.
The mini maxes out at 2048x1536
So like Andy0 said the TV or in my case projector is the limiting factor, not the mini as a DVD player.
I guess my next step is to upgrade to a 1080 projector.
As for ease of use, the mini is awesome. One stick on gum sized remote to control video, music, photos, podcasts. AND my wife doesn't have to deal with the intimidating 60 button Harmon Kardon remote.

  • Can you connect the Apple TV to a Harmon Kardon receiver?

I have all my sound running through the harmon kardon receiver. I just don't know how I would connect it. would I put it through the input or output?

Optical input or analogue jack input inputs on the receiver.
If it accepts HDMI in you could try that too.
Audio is output simultaneously on all AppleTV outputs.

  • Harman-kardon speakers

Is it possible to use my harman-kardon speakers with my new HP monitor?  The speakers do not have USB connectors, and, i cannot plug them into the tower.  (They plugged into previous monitor.)  Is there some sort of adapter I can purchase?  Simplistic question, but major headache.

While it may not be all that helpful, I had some issues with an Altec lansing speaker set on my G5, where background noise was abnormally high almost all the time, and from time to time there would be rushing noises which grew very loud. It turned out to be a faulty USB hub, even though the speakers were not USB connected.
To troubleshoot your system, I would disconnect everything external bar the basic essentials, including any hubs or other devices, even the keyboard and mouse, and test the system that way. It would not be expected for software or MacOS itself to cause the sort of effects you describe.

    Hi
All the compatible notebook parts can be purchased from the ASP in your country. I would recommend to contact the guys and to ask for such speakers.
    The Toshiba global ASP database can be found here;
