BW APO BPS

Hello,
Could someone please help me with the following questions,
1. Why don't we use TransactionCube instead of RemoteCube in BW for APO plan data, as we do it for BPS plans in BW.
2. Is it possible to do reporting on planned data directly in Bex for either of the APO and BPS plans, without data-marting to some remote cube/BasicCube/TransactionCube in BW and then do reporting on that. If so, how to do that?
3. Is there any relation b/w BW-BPS and SCM-APO, I meant, would they exchange or share any data by any way?
4. Is it possible to, or is there any scenario that, planned and actual data need to be maintained together in one basic or transaction cube.?
In other words
Does transaction or Basic cube holds plan and actual data together in any scenario, instead of MultiProvider on top of Plan and Actual Cubes ?
Thanks in Advance

Hi,
Would you also please help me with the following,
As per the responses, it was clear the same transaction cube could be used for both actual and plan data. Also said it needs to be switched between actual data upload from InfoSource and through BPS plan data.
I knew this switching could be done through TransactionCube's context menu, and then by changing the Loading behavior,
But my Doubt is "How do you handle this switching in production system?, As usually production system does not allow any changes to the properties of BW objects" (in our case Transaction Cube).
Do you say every time you change the property in development system and transport it to Production system? Or you say this switching could be incorporated into Process Chain so that can be achieved in Prod System itself?
Would you also please care about 1st and 3rd questions of the Main Post
I say thanks with Points

• BW-BPS versus SAP APO

Hi!
Does someone know the main differences between BW-BPS and SAP APO. When should I pick one tool and when the other.
Best Regards,
Teresa.

BW-BPS and APO are very different products.
BW-BPS tend to be high level or generic planning and occassionally detailed level planning. Some common planning applications to be developed are Sales Planning, Inventory Planning, Profitability Planning, CCA/PCA planning, Financial statement planning, etc.
APO is more Supply Chain Management for production or demand planning with MRP and capacity checking....

• Diff between Planning in BPS and Planning in APO

Hello..
Can any one give me some good insight in to the difference between planning in APO and plannning BW BPS.. In what way is it diff?
thankyou..
kishore karnati

Hi Kishore,
Not sure about APO but some of the distinct features of BPS planning are:
Loose integration with the transactional data flow
Fast and simple adaptation to current and future organizational changes
Free and unrestricted definition of integrated planning scenarios
One homogeneous planning environment for the flexible design of various planning steps
One central data warehouse as basis for all information needed in the decision process
More simulative planning processes
Maybe an APO expert could comment on the other side
Hope it helps...

• Can BPS be used along with APO..?

Hi,
We are examining the possibility of using BW-BPS within APO environment as much of the forecast planning is carried out with APO data. Since BW3.5, SAP has bundled BPS into BW. Since APO has BW3.5, why not BPS could be used within APO. Any thoughts..?
What are downfall of using BPS within APO or I put the question in another way, What is the difference between BW-BPS as a standalone system and BPS in APO system.
Any input will be helpful.
Thanks and Regards,
KT

Hi KT,
there is a paper avaliable on service marketplace, that describes how BW-BPS can be integrated with APO-DP:
<http://service.sap.com/~form/sapnet?_SHORTKEY=01100035870000517885&> (or http://service.sap.de/bi -> SAP BW Business Planning and Simulation -> Further Information) title "Integrate BW-BPS and APO-DP".

• Some cube records don't displaying in BPS layout

Hello, gurus!
I met crazy situation: I see in my cube (thru LISTCUBE) 5 almost identical records, with only difference - package ID - 3 with different APO packages, and 2 - with identical REQU. In my BEx queries, I see the correct sum of all 5 packages, but in my planning layout in BPS - just sum of 3 APO-packages! All packages relevant to queries in cube.
In RSRV I'd find following unrepairable error:
15748 units missing from fact table /BIC/FYCPLBSP; see details.
Could be the reason of ignoring 2 REQU-packages records in BPS layout?

Hello Mikhail,
BPS does not display any records where units or currency key are missing. You have to delete those records and load them properly (put a rule in your transfer rules like "if keyfigure <> 0 and unit is initial. raise error. endif.").

• Planning with APO

Hi Everyone,
I have a question regarding APO and BI Integrated Planning. If we are using APO DP is it a good option to implement BI Integrated planning as well. because both of them have the same planning and forecasting strategies. Is BI Integrated Planning and alternate option for APO DP or can it be used along with APO DP for planning on certain reports. Thank you very much for your time.

Hi Akshay27,
I have personnally never use the BI integrating planning, but based on my knowledges; hopefully somebody with more experience in this area will be able to complete this answer!
Integrated planning indeed allow to realised more and more planning using BW infrastructure. The very big advantages is the user friendliness.
However this does not exclude the use a DP. Both can be use together, for example DP for your power user and integrated planning for collaboration. DP will be the "master system" enabling you to maintain CVC, run complex statistical forecast, validate foecast.
(I have seen a simialr implementation a couple of year ago using BPS).
Note for exaple that the new functionality "customer forecast management" in SCM 7 use both DP and IP.
You mentioned the possibilty to perform statistical calculation in IP... I haven't actually seen that, but I am not convince you will have the capacity of DP (seasonal planning, promotion, like profile... MLR, POS forecast...), If you know more, please let me know.
I hope this help a bit; now if somebody could provide more information about IP, that would be great!
Thanks and Regards

• Strange error or not? (ORA-01653 and APO Interface)

Hi Gurus,
I'm facing some strange problems in our BW-System. Last weekend we got some error messages: "ORA-01653: unable to extend table " This happend during loading. No problem, basis team worked fine and data loading ist going well again.
Now comes the strange stuff: Every Cube that had problems last weekend has a request with status "red" called "Request loaded using the APO interface without monitor log". The Request date is in some cases 14 days in the past.
What is this about? Basis team doesn't knows, so my coleagues. I learned SEM/BPS data is loaded this way, but our expert says he never dealt with the affected cubes.
Best regards,
Leo

That's what the basis team did and that work fine. The problems were the red APO-requests. We had another problem last weekens. A source system was shut down and our communications user was deleted because. This system should be taken out of our BW, but the processes were still running. I guess that's the reason. I cut all connections to this system and now everythin is fine.

• Difference between planning r/3 and BPS

Hello gurus
Can u please let me know the main difference between planning in R/3 and BW-BPS
komal

Hi,
SAP R/3 planning
1. CO-PA is used to input sales forecasts and production
quantities directly into CO (reporting out of Report Painter
or ABAP)
2. Sales and operational planning can assist with make or buy
planning (reporting out of ABAP or standard SAP R/3 reports)
3. Production planning determines the capacity and your ability
to meet the sales and operational plan (reporting out of ABAP
or LIS)
4. Cost center planning and/or product costing uses planned
activity rates and/or product costs to derive the P&L (reporting
out of standard SAP R/3 reports or ABAP)
5. Possible other plans in PCA, labor in HR, and procurement in
MM (reporting out of various SAP R/3 reporting tools)
BI-IP planning
1. BI-IP is used to input sales forecasts and production quantities
(reporting out of SAP NetWeaver BI)
2. BI-IP can be used for sales and operational planning for make
or buy planning (reporting out of SAP NetWeaver BI)
3. APO’s Demand Planning determines the capacity and your
ability to meet the sales and operational plan (reporting out of
SAP NetWeaver BI)
4. BI-IP performs cost center planning and/or product costing
using planned activity rates and/or product costs to derive the
P&L (reporting out of SAP NetWeaver BI)
5. Possible other plans in BI-IP include profit center, labor, cost
center, and procurement (reporting out of SAP NetWeaver BI)
SAP R/3 pros:
 Has sophisticated allocation functionality
 BPS does not
Consider retraction of BI-IP data to SAP R/3 for allocation
 Offers availability control
 Not available in BI-IP
Allows you to use existing Report Painter/Writer SAP R/3
reports in planning
BI-IP uses SAP NetWeaver BI reports or must retract
data back to SAP R/3 to use existing Report
Painter/Writer reports
BI-IP pros:
Allows you to use master data that does not exist in SAP R/3
For SAP R/3 planning, SAP R/3 master data must be used
Limits your ability to do “what ifs” with nonexistent
master data or hierarchies
Has one interface for all planning and reporting
SAP R/3 has different interfaces for each SAP R/3 module,
thus increasing confusion and training costs
Easier full integration in BI-IP — harder to achieve in SAP R/3
Uses single reporting tool in BI-IP (SAP NetWeaver BI) — SAP
R/3 uses different tools per module
All planning functions are available in BI-IP regardless of
functional area
In SAP R/3, planning functions differ by module or don’t
exist at all
All planning functions are Web-enabled in BI-IP
Some planning functions aren’t Web-enabled in SAP R/3
Regards.

• Re:apo basics

Morning gurus,
I am new to sap apo and i just want to post some threads on apo where can i post them in sdn.
Thanks
vp

Hi,
APO is the supply chain tool from SAP. BW is the data layer for APO. SAP APO is for Demand Planning and is a component of mySAP SCM. It enables dynamic supply chain management and which in turn includes applications for detailed planning, optimization and scheduling, allowing the supply chain to be accurately and globally monitored even beyond enterprise boundaries.
SAP BI is a reporting tool in SAP. It provides a complete view of the company. The solution is part of SAP NetWeaver and provides the tools needed to make the right decisions, optimize processes, and measure strategic success: data from all enterprise sources are merged effectively and can be comprehensively analyzed, business-critical factors can be monitored using external and internal benchmarks, the most important KPIs can be passed on to all the relevant forces in a company in real time, strategies can be rapidly adapted to changed market conditions, and the results of analyses can be graphically represented in a wide variety of formats, such as grids, graphs, and maps
Check this:
What is APO and how it is related to BW
SAP Advanced Planner and Optimizer is a component of the mySAP Supply Chain Management solution that you use for planning and optimizing supply chain processes at a strategic, tactical, and operational planning level.
With APO - Simultaneous Material & Capacity Planning is possible, as against R/3 PP
APO Planning is capable of taking all the constraints into consideration with Planning for Capacities/Scheduling
APO Resource (workcenter in R/3) does a Capacity availability check before scheduling an activity, if capacity is not available, it finds the immediate next available slot & schedules the activity there. This is not possible with R/3
