BWF management and AAF export to Protools
Hi everyone,
I'm currently editing a feature film and I wanted to report some issues about BWF management and AAF export to protools.
I was aiming to fill the feature request form, but seems it is not available in my area at the moment (Taiwan). I also tried to fill the form using a VPN with a US IP address and I didn't have much chance, so Im going to post it here hoping some people from Adobe will see it.
BWF-P or BWF-M
There is no problem in importing BWF-P files, but it would be very convenient if we could see the track names on the timeline (like if the track is the Boom, which wireless microphone...). Our sound engineer is recording from 3 to 8 tracks and he includes the track names in the metadata of his files. I like working on the sound when I edit, so it would help a lot to have this information appearing on the timeline.
BWF-M management seems very poor to me. It is not possible to import BWF-M as one poly clips. Or is it possible and I don't know why? For the moment, if I have 5 tracks for 1 sound (it means I have 5 files in the finder named xyz_01.wav, xyz_02.wav, ..., xyz_05.wav) and if I import these five files, it will import in my premiere project as 5 different clips, when it should be able to make them as 1 clip with 5 tracks.
AAF Export
The way Premiere Pro export oaf could be much more intelligent.
I always prefer to export separate files from the as, not embbed. I prefer copy complete files instead of doing handles. In this way, Premiere Pro just copy the BWF file exactly like it was, but rename it. The advantage is that we keep the metadata in this export, which is important for our sound designer who works on Protools HD 11.
Usually, I will have from 3 to 8 tracks for on clip. The sound engineer recorded BWF-P. Quite often, I will cut one clip on the timeline to remove some undesirable sound like "Action", "Now"... I found out that Premiere will copy from 5 times the same file if there is 5 tracks. And each time, Premiere is copying the full BWF-P file, it means we'll have 5 identical files with 5 identical tracks, but with different names. And if the same clip is cut into different prices on the timeline, it will copy each time once again the same file with different naming convention.
For a one hour timeline, my sound export took 1 hour and needs 12GB of storage, because Premiere is just copying many times the same file.
I found out that the way Premiere is exporting is more suitable to use BWF-M, because at least, it won't copy five times the same tracks. But as mentioned above, Premiere seems to be very inconvenient when you want to import BWF-M files.
Finally, I'm using merged clips to edit. When Premiere export the aaf and copy all the complete sound files, the naming convention follows the merged clip naming. It would make much more sense to follow the original files naming instead. Like this, if the aaf link to the original name files, then the sound editor might be able to simply link to his original media, which would be very convenient for editor and for sound department.
AAF Translation to Protools.
As the aaf export lots of identical files, it becomes a mess in protools. You can see the file 001_05_T05 is repeated a lot of time!
The also exports the video timeline. It doesn't export the video files, but it shows all the cut of the film and also provides the names of all the clips I edited.
Thats is very convenient for the sound designer, because he can see where I cut and what is the original video clip.
The problem is that in our test, all the name clip appeared to be wrong. The cuts are correct, but not the names.
Another issue is concerning the metadata. As Premiere is exporting 5 times the same files containing 5 tracks, Protools only shows the 1st track name instead of showing the correct one. For example, if track names were MKH60, 718m, 718s, HF_Actor1, HF_Actor2, Protools will show MKH60 on every tracks.
I usually work very close to the sound department and I know they're going to loose lots of time to find out which track is which microphone, when it could be very simple, like when I export aaf from Avid.
I much prefer editing on Premiere Pro, but also our sound designer can understand my decision to use Premiere Pro, he regrets the time I was using Avid.
FEATURE REQUESTS (if not available yet):
1) BWF-M better import management
2) BWF Metadata management: import track names and add an option to show the track name directly on the timeline.
3) AAF Export: Export files with the same name as the original BWF files. Possibility to really Link Media.
4) AAF Export: Copy only time a BWF-P files that is used several time in the timeline and that contain several tracks.
5) AAF Export: Fix the naming of the video clip that appeared to be wrong in Protools,
CONCLUSION:
Since Gone Girl, it appears that Adobe has the ambition to conquer the feature film market. I couldn't be more happy than that, and the improvements have been huge these past two years. I really enjoy working on sound in Premiere. The VST plugin implementation is great, much better than in Avid. The track audio mixer is great as well.
But when we talk about exporting the project to sound department, it install not as good as it could.
I hope Adobe can have a serious look on that.

P.S.: Sorry for my approximate english, but I'm a French and I hope it is understandable english native readers.
I've had several years of classical voice training, including singing in Italian, German, and French ... well, min Deutsch isn't too bad as I've had some years of study and actually spent some time talking with Germans; my Italian is ... um ... well, I've been told an Italian can actually understand what I'm saying easily enough but would never mistake me for "real" ... (sigh) ... and my daughter, who took three years of French in high school started laughing one day whilst I was practicing with her listening to advise at the request of my voice teacher ( a near-native French speaker). "Daddy, I just figured out why your French is so weird ... you're not singing with an English (American, that is) accent, but a Norwegian accent!". Yes, I do speak some Norwegian ... way too little compared to what I could 20 years ago while visiting family & professional friends there.
So ... post any further observations you've got on PrPro, questions too ... and as soon as the feature request line is working again, post away on there. "We'll" understand you just fine. Which is far more than I could say for a French person trying to understand my singing of it ...

OMF and AAF exports -limited functionality now with 'raw' DSLR audio files.
I'm an post production sound mixer...and a film maker and thus I see PP CS5 from 2 sides. I'm using CS5 with a PC.
The industry uses OMF or AAF to export from a video workstation to an audio one. However PP CS5's OMF and AAF are both flawed.
I often had trouble exporting OMF's (from CS4) which failed without any reason popping up from the software. I usually believed this to be because of the OMF's restriction to 2Gb so I exported single tracks when I believe the source files are large...even when specifing say only 50 frame handles.
AAF more often worked with large files but the exports become large of course (that's OK) and all video material had to be deleted in the sequence before doing an AAF export.
I am now using CS5 and dropping my Canon 5D2 'H264' and Panasonic GH-1 'mts' files directly on the timeline instead of converting them to avi's with Neoscene. Great ...but alas all OMF's or AAF exports now fail....they will only work if I get my audio back to being wav files again, which isn't really viable once editing has occurred.
I know that OMF is fraught...Avid never made it easy but AAF is a more up to date exchange protocol. Could I request that this is investigated and an intermediate transcode to something like wav or AIFF be undertaken by Media Encoder when an AAF export is used? I assume that the encoder doesn't yet know how to process audio .movs or mts files into the required export audio file and just kills the process.
David Taylor Postfade Sound Pinewood Studios UKStan,
Thanks for the suggestion...I submitted a Bug Report.
I used both OMF and AAF to export from PP CS4 to my professional Fairlght DAW, which was happy with either, as long as the export was succesful. As I said there were occasional problems with OMF even though I selected small 'audio handles' for the 'embedded' OMF exports. My source audiofiles are often pretty big. AAF worked with these big source files however.
However I always used Neoscene to transcode my DSLR files before importing the Neoscene converted .AVI's into CS4, the audio was part of the new .AVI's and was probably now a .WAV.
Now with CS5 I can drop the Canon 5D2's 'H264. mov's' or the Panasonic GH-1's '.mts' video files directly into PP-which plays them beautifully.
My trouble now starts when I try and export the edited audio to my DAW. I can only get it to work with source files that are .WAV.
I don't think other professional users, like all those new PP CS5 machines at the BBC, will be happy with the compromised OMF/AAF exports either as so many of us are using DSLR's now.

Aaf export from premiere could not be opened properbly in protools
aaf export from premiere could not be opened properbly in protools (by reference) is it a bug? I dont want to export all audio and video for a mixing-session. Does anyone have experiences with this problem?
Hi drahtzieher,
You might try what is suggested in the following article. Hope it helps!

I've actually read Apple's tech specs and looked on this forum for this answer and have not found it. I've found that FCE has not supported OMF or AAF export in the past - is this true for FCE 4 as well?
If it is not included does anybody have a technical reason why this is?
and if FCE does NOT have an OMF or AAF export function - has anybody had success with XML export and then converting the XML to an OMF or AAF?that's insane about the XML - I guess I just assumed it would since iMovie can export XML, right - isn't that how people are supposed to get from iMovie to FCE?
anyway - thanks for the response. -
Hi, i'm using Premiere Pro CC and receiving AAF exports from the sound mixer who is working in Protools 10. When I do the import however, I am getting only 20 seconds of clips in the time line and all the clips are offline. Can anyone help please? Thanks.
Are you using any plugins in Logic?
In Preferences/Audio under the General tab, how do you have the plug-in-latency compensation set? -
Photos in Library module and after export look different than in Development module
Hello,
I experience a problem.
After I update photos in the Development module, the updates seem not to be shown in the Library module. And when I subsequently export to Flickr, Flickr is also showing the original photo, not the adapted one.
I noticed this the first time after making Blacks a bit deeper, causing a sunflower to become a deeper yellow. I thought that my adaptations were not applied in the Library module. After I checked with cranking down the Saturation all the way back (to almost black-and-white), that adaptation WAS applied in the Library view. So it had to be something else, causing the same color difference between the Library and Development modules.
When I switch from the Library module to the Development module, I see a slight delay in applying my changes, but they are applied. Before they are applied, I can see that the original photo is shown and that looks the same as in the Library module and on Flickr.
The photostrip on the bottom of the Lightroom screen also shows the original photos only, unless I go to the development module and select a photo (adaptations are applied in the photostrip after I select the photo, not before).
After I played a bit more in the Development module, I found something strange in the Camera Calibration menu of the Development module. The Adobe Profile (my default) caused an obvious color difference between the Library (less saturated) and the Development (more saturated) modules. The Camera Standard profile also showed a (very) slight difference, but I was unable to notice the differences using the other profiles.
So I was thinking (but it's only a guess), that the profiles are not applied in the Library view and on export, but they are in the Development module?
I use Lightroom 5.6, Camera RAW 8.6.
Please help me, as this is very annoying. I currently cannot export my photos to Flickr or anywhere else, unless I overcompensate before exporting. And I really don't want to do that. My Lightroom photo is my perfect photo, and I want to keep it that way...
Many thanks in advance for any help,
PeterHi ssprengel,
Thanks for your reply. Let me react to each possibility you mention and provide some extra information.
- "Check your Export / File Settings / Image Format and make sure they are set to JPG not Original". Done that, it's not on Original, but on jpg. This would not explain why I see the difference in the Library and Development modules, by the way. But better to know for sure.
- "...the most likely thing that is wrong is your color-management on your computer is not working properly". It is a PC with Windows 7. I have been using Lightroom for maybe 6 years and I never had this problem before. The last time I changed my setup is more than a year ago and this problem only started to happen a short while ago (after the update to Lightroom 5.6? I'm not sure, but that's the only thing that has changed lately). I use a Spider to create a custom profile that is correct for my setup and do a regular update on the profile.
- "what brand and model of monitor do you have?" I have an EIZO FlexScan S2411W and use that for a long time as well. I chose this brand of monitors for its good color reproduction and I have been happy with it for years now.
What I am not getting is why would all this show a difference between the Library and Development module? The only difference is the Lightroom software that is switching from one module to another, and that should deliver the same photo. I'm also stating in my first post that the differences are very noticeable using the Adobe Standard Camera Profile in the Development module. I have a feeling that the profile is part of the problem. -
Oracle spatial 11g - 3D-Geometry and KML-Export
Hi,
I'm currently working with an Oracle Spatial 11g - database and there with 2d- and 3d-geometries. With this Version you can extrude 2d's to 3d's and calculate their volumes. This works fine.
The problem is to save the extruded areas as 3d-geometries in a specific table. Enclosed you will find the SQL-Code of the current workflow:
*1. Create tables for the 2d- and 3d-geometries (incl. metadata and spatial index)*
-- table for 3d-geometry
CREATE
TABLE ta_geb(
geom MDSYS.SDO_GEOMETRY
,area NUMBER(12,3)
-- metadata 2D
INSERT INTO USER_SDO_GEOM_METADATA (TABLE_NAME, COLUMN_NAME, DIMINFO, SRID)
VALUES
'ta_geb',
'geom',
MDSYS.SDO_DIM_ARRAY
(MDSYS.SDO_DIM_ELEMENT('X',4439900.00, 4440020.00, 0.005),
MDSYS.SDO_DIM_ELEMENT('Y', 5664050.00, 5664130.00, 0.005)
31468
-- spatial index 2D
CREATE
INDEX ta_geb_index ON ta_geb(geom) INDEXTYPE IS MDSYS.SPATIAL_INDEX;
-- table for 3d-geometry
CREATE
TABLE ta_3dgeb(
geom3d MDSYS.SDO_GEOMETRY
-- metadata 3D
INSERT INTO USER_SDO_GEOM_METADATA (TABLE_NAME, COLUMN_NAME, DIMINFO, SRID)
VALUES
'ta_3dgeb',
'geom3d',
MDSYS.SDO_DIM_ARRAY
( MDSYS.SDO_DIM_ELEMENT('X',4439900.00, 4440020.00, 0.005),
MDSYS.SDO_DIM_ELEMENT('Y', 5664050.00, 5664130.00, 0.005),
MDSYS.SDO_DIM_ELEMENT('Z', 0, 200, 0.005)
31468
-- spatial index
CREATE
INDEX ta_3dgeb_index ON ta_3dgeb(geom3d) INDEXTYPE IS MDSYS.SPATIAL_INDEX PARAMETERS ('SDO_INDX_DIMS=3');
*2. insert 2d-geomtry*
INSERT
INTO
ta_geb
VALUES
MDSYS.SDO_GEOMETRY(
2003
,31468
,NULL
,MDSYS.SDO_ELEM_INFO_ARRAY(
1
,1003
,1
,MDSYS.SDO_ORDINATE_ARRAY(
4439975.91,5664077.07,
4439967.98,5664072.06,
4439975.33,5664060.42,
4439983.26,5664065.43,
4439975.91,5664077.07
,null --area
*3. calculate volume of the extruded area*
SELECT SDO_GEOM.SDO_VOLUME(SDO_UTIL.EXTRUDE(
GEOM,
SDO_NUMBER_ARRAY(0),
SDO_NUMBER_ARRAY(10),
'false', --validation
0.005),0.005)
from ta_geb;
This works fine so far. Now I wanna insert the extruded geometry (now 3D) in the table ta_3dgeb. All my attempts were in vain...
*4. insert extruded geomtry*
INSERT
INTO
ta_3dgeb
select
SDO_UTIL.EXTRUDE(
GEOM,
SDO_NUMBER_ARRAY(0),
SDO_NUMBER_ARRAY(10),
'false', --validation
0.005)
from ta_geb;
I got the following error message after executing this Code:
ORA-29875: failed in the execution of the ODCIINDEXINSERT routine
ORA-13365: layer SRID does not match geometry SRID
ORA-06512: in "MDSYS.SDO_INDEX_METHOD_10I", line 709
ORA-06512: in "MDSYS.SDO_INDEX_METHOD_10I", line 225
Then I tried to change something on the metadata and spatial indices, wihtout success. Does anyone has advices to solve the problem??
Afterwards I would like to export the 3d-geometry in a KML file to visualize it in Google Earth. Therefore oracle provides a tool. But I didn't managed it to export the geometry. Any hints for the KML export or are there any other tools alternatively??
Thanks for any suggestions!
RegardsExtrude does not automatically populate the SRID for the resulting geometry as there may not be a 3D equivalent of the 2D SRID defined
in the DB.
So the extruded geometry comes out without the SRID. In your case, since you are creating an index on the ta_3dgeb table
before inserting the extruded data, it is causing this failure.
So drop the index on the ta_3dgeb table and do the inserts into it.
Then you can manually update the geometries with the SRID if there is a corresponding 3D SRID for 31468.
Otherwise, you can use 31468.

Fill in PDF forms and save/export as *un-editable* PDF?
Hi all,
I have a client for whom I am creating an invoice template. I created the file in InDesign and have exported as a PDF.
Working with Adobe Acrobat Pro 8.1.4 on Mac 10.6.8, I have managed to add text fields for my client to fill in with job-specific information. (Job number, item / descriptions / costs and so on).
Is there a way that he/she can fill in job specifics, and then save or export the file so that when opened by their client, it appears as UN-editable?
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thank you.I answered this here: Can I fill in PDF forms and export / save as un-editable file?

Render and record, export to tape question?
Hi,
I have finished a ten minute HDV project.
I now want to export to tape. (HDV Sony V1e) When I hit export - tape then hit the render and record box. This then brings up the Export to HDV (transcoding to HDV) box.
The problem I have is that 10 min project trancodes for about ten minutes then just goes back to the render and record dialogue box, without the exporting to tape.
I then tried exporting a smaller chunk (25seconds) and this renders in about three minutes and exports fine!!
So, I think my camera etc is fine.
Why won't my ten min movie render and record?
Sometimes it does give me a low memory warning too. I have set the preference from performance to memory already.
Please help!
thanks
scottHi Scott,
I am having this very same problem.
Did you manage to solve it? If so, how??
I've been trying to figure it out for the past 5 days and it's driving me crazy!!!
I exported a 3 minutes sequence and it exported to tape fine. But when I tried to do the entire film - 55 minutes - it began the 'transcoding' then just stopped and went back to the 'render and record' pop up without any error message or anything.
I am trying to get from CS3 to a Sony HDV deck.
Thanks,

Workflow for marking clips and then exporting them out as individual clips with audio?
Hello,
I'm just starting to use Prelude. I recorded an interview for my daughter for a school project last week. The interview went well, but I want to mark as "sub-clips" all of the video interview's question/answer combos (e.g. "What is your name? My name is John Doe.") and then save them out to individual clips rather than have to manage the full size files (about 40GB in all from my Panasonic GH3, 50mbps, IPB MOV) with clip markers. I'll keep the originals as backups, but would really rather work with the individual clip files.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated! I would think this would be a very simple and common function. Basically, just dividing up the original video into multiple, standalone video clips with the same bit-rate, encoding, etc., but with new headers/EOF markers. Just chopping the original files up into chunks with no changes or reencoding necessary. If I can do it the way I imagine it, it should be a very quick process, at least compared to transcoding the files.
Best regards,
ScottHi -
Meg The Dog's suggestion will work if you don't intend to bring in all of your media off the card. The Partial Ingest method will allow you to selectively create subclips during ingest and not transfer the full original clips.
However, you do state you plan to keep all your media - not just the parts you want to subclip. So here's my suggestion for the workflow:
1. Ingest all your media from your cameras (the entire clips - not the partial clip method)
2. Open each clip from the Prelude Project Panel and create your Subclip Markers using Prelude logging tools.
3. In the Project Panel you will find new entries will appear for each SUBCLIP Marker you add to your master clips.
4. You can organize you subclips into BINS as needed to keep track of the segments of your video
5. When you're ready to create your timeline of subclips you can either
5a. EXPORT all the SUBCLIPS into their own files (select all subclips you want to export and use the FILE->EXPORT->MEDIA menu command)
or
5b. Drag-Drop your subclips into a ROUGHCUT in Prelude to order your story. Then use the SEND TO PREMIERE PRO feature to send the Rough Cut into Premiere pro where you can finish your edit. All the media will come along for the ride into Premiere Pro (including your Subclips). You can then add titles and any effects easily enough in Premiere Pro).
There are some other options here you can also try out which might be interesting. For example, you can add transitions and any additional audio tracks to your ROUGH CUT directly in Prelude and then EXPORT the Rough Cut as a final movie - and not need to move to Premiere Pro unless you have wider editing needs.
Hope this helps!

"Manage Folders" or exporting folder objects slow in Discoverer Admin
Hi everyone,
I have an issue when we try to export folders from the EUL OR when we do Tools -> Manage Folders from within the Discoverer Administrator application. When I do the export by doing File -> Export, then "Selected objects in the End User Layer", and then select "Folders" in the objects drop down that appears in step two of the export wizard, it takes forever for the folders to come up and be ready for me to select the folders I want. It takes about 15 to 20 minutes. We have the same issue when we do Tools -> Manage Folders, it takes 15 to 20 minutes for the folders to load so we can assign any orphaned folders to business areas.
I put in an SR for this and Oracle is still working this issue. They gave me some registry settings to check and/or set to try to speed this up, but that does not work for me. They are also saying they have not heard of complaints like this in regards to their 11g version.
We are using both the Discoverer 10g (Administrator version 10.1.2.1) and are in the process of testing Discoverer 11g (Administrator version 11.1.1.3). It is doing this in both versions and the behavior is seen on multiple machines. We do not have any machine where the folders load quickly.
During the export wizard, if we select workbooks or item classes to export, it is pretty fast to bring up the list.
Oracle suggested I try doing an export from the command line and I have done that, but it takes about 15 minutes to create the EEX file this way.
I am wondering if anyone else has seen this type of performance issue and if so, was there a solution to improve it.
When we started testing 11g, I was hoping they would have implemented an easy solution to this, like you could right click on a folder in the Business Area and an "Export" option would present itself in the right-click menu, but that was wishful thinking.
Regards,
Jerry
Edited by: jlmorris on Jul 27, 2011 11:06 AMHi,
You say that it happen from several machines so I would go for the metadata structure in the database, maybe the performance issue starts there?
When is the last time the database schema of the discoverer was maintained ?
did you run statistics on it lately ? maybe there are tables or indexes that need to take care of ?
Those are the tables that holds the metadata for the folders.
I suggest you will rebuild the indexes on the following tables and see if it effect you:
eul_us.eul5_ba_obj_links
eul_us.eul5_objs
Anyway i would run statistics for the schema of the discoverer and rebuild the indexes to make sure that the problem doesn't start at the database level.

AAF EXPORT OPTION FOR AFTER EFFECTS CC
Hi My name is Marcellus. I use After effects for vex when I import my avid sequence AAF from Media Composer to After effects. Thing is I don't use premiere Pro or Premiere CC. I think that if I have to dynamic link my after effect composition over to premiere creating a new premiere project then exporting my sequence AAF from premiere back to avid it's too much file base creation. May after Effects CC add an AAF export option where it renders the effects in the composition, I can export that workflow as an AAF with effects rendered and import that AAF back into Avid Media composer and link to the timeline like a feature with Davinci resolve?

You're correct. See the Avid to After Effects workflow article. That method is possible but not recommended.

You can always make a feature request here: http://www.adobe.com/go/wish

Finding Manager and supervisor
Hi all,
I have a requirement to find out the manager and supervisor positions according to the level of positions.
1) from the pernr i will findout position (S).
2) if the number of reportee positions belongs to (S) = 1 .
the position is a supervisor...
if the number of reportee positions belongs to (S) >= 2 .
the position is a manager..
for that i have done coding in ABAP...
1) PERNR ->A008-> get position S in wa_obj-sobid.
then..check up to depth 3
CALL FUNCTION 'RH_STRUC_GET'
EXPORTING
act_otype = 'S'
act_objid = wa_obj-sobid
act_wegid = 'S-S'

RESULT_OBJEC = it_hrp1001
RESULT_STRUC =

NO_ENTRY_FOUND = 2
OTHERS = 3
2).finding manager and supervisor.........
loop at it_hrp1001
into wa_hrp1001
where otype eq 'S'.
add 1 to l_count .
endloop.
ENDIF.
****if level > 2 then manager.
****if level = 1 then supervisor
if l_count eq 1.
IS_SUPERVISOR = 'X'.
elseif l_count ge 3.
IS_MANAGER = 'X'.
endif.
Is the ABAP coding will workout with logic and
get desired output ????
