BX Master and HDD size

Hey All,
Want to add another Western Digital Drive to my BX Master.  What is the largest size she accepts without using those utility programs?
Also, on my earlier posts, had to go back to WIN98SE because my PC Alert III and 3d! did not work properly among many other little bugs.  Too bad, really liked Win2000 but did not have the time to mess around with it.

Assaf???
Read an old post in the old forum and you said 80 gigs with no problem.  Is that still correct?  You're the man!

  • For a laptop for LR image loading on trips - is 1366x768 screen enough and HDD size?

I have big pc and big screens for editing at home, but for travel am looking for a laptop for loading images on the road and basic LR sorting and tagging while away.
2 questions to get your experiences, forum regulars, about my direction:
    1. 1tb HDD with an external 1tb HDD as backup - rather than 256 or 512 gb inboard SSD (reasons of $$$ and also to load all my images on a trip)
    2. 14 inch screen with 1366 x 768 or similar rather than full HD ($$$ reasons and becasue I figure I can zoom in to check focus on that screen just fine)
    Your comments and experiences?
    Oz

It meets the minimum requirements for display size which is 1024 x 768
I use a 15 inch Macbook Pro on the road, so pretty close in size.

  • Master and Version sizes

Can someone please explain file sizes as they relate to Masters and Versions? I still get confused about this point. I would think my Master image would contain the most data, and therefore have the larger file size than its versions. However, perhaps I am mistaken on this point. When I export Masters, the file sizes are always a lot smaller than the associated versions that I export.
When I export a version, I am exporting it at JPEG Original size, so isn't this compressing the master? I thought this would cause it to have less data? I'm just really unclear about why the sizes differ and what is going on. For example, my Master JPEG might be 2MB, but an exported version of that image could be something like 4.46MB.

    Corky,
    Thanks, great stuff!
I have a few follow up questions. I hope it doesn't get too confusing.
    1. The camera takes a picture. When I see an image size in Aperture of 2 MB, is that the same size that the image file was when the camera took it? Then it compresses it into a JPEG even if I was shooting in JPEG instead of RAW? So the 2 MB size image gets compressed to say 1 MB and then upon import into Aperture it gets uncompressed again and is seen at 2 MB?
With Aperture, the reported size of the file in the Metadata Inspector pane is about the size on disk (slightly smaller in my experience, but close). I am not sure what Aperture is doing here, but you can think of it as the space used on disk by the Master file. Aperture is not reporting the un-compressed (expanded) file state as Photoshop does when you work on the same file.
In the case of a digital camera, you capture an image and the sensor in the camera records the brightness value of the scene on the 'photo sites' of the sensor (the amount of photo sites on the sensor is expressed in Mega Pixels (means million pixels) by multiplying the number of sites in width by the number of sites in height). In this instance, Photo Site is expressed as pixel (3200 pixels x 2400 pixels = 7,680,000 pixels - or 7.68 Mega Pixels). The light captured by the camera travels through a color filter matrix where each site has a color value assigned to it.
When you shoot JPEG, the camera takes the brightness data from the sensor, combined with the color data collected and applies what is called a 'demosaic' process which predicts what color each adjacent pixel is to create a color image with smooth transitions between colors. The camera then processes this data (and applies compression in camera) to create a JPEG. This process does throw out data the camera software (firmware) decides is unnecessary to create a final JPEG image.
Current digital cameras do a good job (for the most part) of processing a nice JPEG image. If you shoot RAW, you are telling the camera not to process the sensor data and to save the uncompressed data for you to do the processing via a RAW processing program such as Aperture.
In short, the 2 MB file size you see in Aperture is what your camera delivered to the camera card after processing (although it might be 2.3 MB or something on disk).
    2. If my scenario in #1 is correct, I still don't understand why a version being exported at a level 12 quality (which is where I set it) comes out roughly twice this size. Obviously I am missing something here. I understand about it being compressed less upon export if the quality setting is at 12, but it is still getting compressed, so how does it become bigger than the original size to begin with. Again, I am missing something there, so a little deeper insight would be helpful.
Based on my answer to #1, your Master file is 2 MB on disk and Aperture is reporting that to you. It is not telling you what size the uncompressed file size is prior to applying any adjustments and then re-compressing.
    3. I do set my export quality settings to 12 as I want the highest quality file to be sent to photo processing sites for printing purposes. A) is this necessary and meaningful to get the best quality prints? B) Do I need to change the DPI settings to something higher than the default 72 when I export these versions for printing? I was always under the impression that 72 DPI was standard for viewing images on a computer screen, but not ideal for printing. Is it beneficial to change the DPI to something higher - 300 for example - for the purpose of exporting images to be printed?
For printing, you will want to export at 150 - 300 DPI. I have read many articles and some books which talk to this and most say that 240 DPI is as good as 300 DPI for all but fine art printing on high end machines. I typically use 150 DPI to start and see what the print looks like. There is no magic number for printing, it really is about verifying the result once printed and then you will know what setting you like the best.
One thing is that the higher the DPI you use, the smaller the size of the print at the native (original) resolution of your image. So for a 3200 x 2400 pixel image, you would exchange pixels for dots (in Dots Per Inch) which is used by the printer to put ink on paper.
    3200/300 = 10.66 inches wide x 2400/300 = 8 inches tall
    3200/150 = 21.33 inches wide x 2400/150 = 16 inches tall
In the examples above, you could print the same image at 10.66 x 8 inches or 21.33 x 16 inches depending on which DPI setting you export to print with.
    4. I export versions and not masters when I am printing images. I do this because I generally make all of my edits in Aperture and I want those versions to be printed. It still seems odd to me that exporting versions gives me a larger file size than when I export masters. Don't the masters get exported with the same quality settings - i.e. 12 - upon export?
Exporting the versions is expected because that is when any adjustments are 'baked in' to your final file outside Aperture.
Exporting the Master is basically copying the original imported image file out of Aperture. There is an option to write IPTC information to the Master on export, but - to the best of my knowledge - that does not require any uncompress / re-compress process.
Aperture only reads the data in the Master once to generate an image on screen for you to work with (at least this is my understanding). It's the version that is subject to any re-compression on export, not the Master. In this way, Aperture protects the original Master file from destructive alteration.
Anyway, those are my understandings. There are many here who are way beyond my skill / knowledge level, so hopefully I have expressed the information accurately and adequately.

  • Raid and HDD size incorrect

    Guys,
    Got 2 probs:
    1. I've got 2 Maxtor Diamond Max 10 160gb SATA's.
If I try raiding them I can't boot from cdrom. It goes through "checking dmi..." then hangs. Though used as singular hdd's I CAN boot from cdrom - any thoughts?
    2. Thes drives are 160gb but the bios only recognises them as 131GB

  • What is the maximum HDD size for Pavilion DV7-3105ea and can I add a 2nd HDD.

    Hi,
Please could someone advise me as to the maximum HDD size that can be installed in a Pavilion DV7-3105ea.
Additionally is it possible to add a second HDD.
    Thanks and kind regards,
    jB

There is no theoretical limit the only limit is what is sold on the market. Any correctly sized SATA laptop drive will work. They do now make 1TB drives that will fit and yes there is a secondary hard drive bay so theoretically you could have 2TB of storage. You are going to need 1 or 2 drives like this:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152291
The drive has to be 9.5 mm in height some 1TB laptop drives are too thick.
You also likely need a second hard drive caddy/connector like this:
    http://www.newmodeus.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=222&zenid=2a83d0d222d80c6...
And here is a link to the Manual showing how to get to the hard drive bay:
    Drive Manual
Check your system to see if a secondary drive caddy/connector is there but it likely is not and you need the part linked above. Good luck.

  • Restore dvd and MAX HDD size

Hi, I assume I have a HDD with a problem, someone gave me this powerbook without DVD s. Used to boot fine but now it just does not. On the apple site I dont see links to buy older (pre intel) OSX disks so I can not run disk utilities or reinstall. Where can I buy and download OSX images that I can create a bootdvd with, from my PC.
Suppose the HDD is broken, what s the maximum HDD size. Smallest I can get here is 180Gb, originall disk is 60Gb. Here s what is written in battery bay:
    1.3ghz/256Mb/60Gb/Combo/BT/APX

There are several possibilities if you're in the US - don't know about Italy.
Get original replacement system discs - You can call Apple Customer Support 1-800-767-2775, provide the Serial Number and specifications of the Mac, and for a fee, a replacement set of system discs (if available), can be ordered. However, the discs will be for the original version of OS, that was pre-installed, when the Mac was manufactured.
Tiger install DVDs are in short supply. Tiger is no longer available at the Apple Store *but may be available for $129 by calling Apple Phone Sales @ 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753)*. For other sources, do a Google search for MA453Z/A (10.4.6), MA190Z/A (10.4.3) and M9639Z/A (10.4) . Also look on eBay. Be sure & buy a retail version (black with silver X) and not a model specific version (gray) (See Can I use another Mac's system restore disc on my Mac? ). Expect to pay (possibly a lot) more than the Apple list price of $129.
After you install the base 10.4.x, update to the final Tiger version 10.4.11. Here's the link for the 10.4.11 combo update http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US

When you upgrade the OS, do it via Archive & Install. See About the Archive and Install feature http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1710
Be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings. Also, repair permissions before and after the install.
Leopard is the max OS you can install, but Leopard is no longer available at the Apple Store *but may be available by calling Apple Phone Sales @ 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753)*.

Sounds just like what was happening with my Alum MB. I took it in and they replaced my battery. It seems to be ok now. I don't know what it is, but my battery was fine before 10.5.6 and the same timeframe of the firmware updates when they came out.
My battery health was jumping around but was fine before all of this happened. Unfortunately at 381 cycles I don't think you have much chance of getting the battery for free. Perhaps you can complain about the battery saying it was fine until 10.5.6 or whatever. Not sure when your computer was made, but perhaps you are eligible for this program: http://www.apple.com/support/macbook_macbookpro/batteryupdate/

  • Max HDD Size for Satellite 3000 -514 with BIOS 2.30

    Hi folks !
What is the largest HD size notebook recognizes with BIOS 2.30.
I found no FAQ information ragarding this BIOS version.
    Thx for your help.

    Hi
The Satellite 3000-514 supports the HDD sizes up to 30GB.
You need a HDD 2.5", 9.5mm support bus master IDE, Ultra 33/66 synchronous DMA
Bigger HDD sizes are not supported and I suppose the BIOS will not recognize it.

    BIOS, update version 4.4
"-Support HDD Size larger than 137GB"
Hmm, how can you see if you have succesfully updated to version 4.4? because I am not sure if I did it right
Also it supports HDD larger than 137gb, does it support up to a 300 gb?

  • Huge CPU and HDD load without a reason. And lots of bugs, lags, crashes and freezes

So with latest updates Firefox became as shitty as Google Chrome and other browsers made by marketers instead of programmers.
Everyday I see crashes, lags, freezes. If I open more than 5 tabs - lags with flash-video guaranteed. If I open large pages (9Gag) - there's a big chance of "black screening" of all the tabs until restart.
Why previous versions worked fine? In the same hardware.
Here's screenshot of taskmanager while Firefox doing that "blackscreening":
    http://i.imgur.com/ufobuct.png
Why do I have to restart my browser each 30 minutes to prevent that bugs? Why my CPU and HDD loaded as hell by fckng browser when I can't even use this browser?
What a hell are you doing there, developers?

I thought it will be attached automatically when I installed addon for this and saw "attach something" button.

  • Drag and Drop and Image Size

I need to be able to drag and drop images but I need them to be a certain size when I drag them out of an Aperture project. For various reasons, I don't want to use the export function. Only drag and drop will be efficient for the workflow that I"m planning. Problem is, the pixel dimension is not wide enough when I test it by pulling an image on to the desktop.
My ultimate goal is drag them, sized and ready to go, and drop them onto a web browser upload page. I don't want to fumble with the extra steps of exporting them to another folder on the desktop and then upload the images from that folder to the browser.
So does anybody know how or if it's possible to control the drag and drop SIZE /DIMENSION of an image?

The drag and drop size is determined by your preview settings. What actually gets "dragged & dropped" is the preview, not the master file. You can control the quality and size of the preview in the Aperture preferences.

  • Need info about max HDD size available for Satellite Pro M30-813

    Hello,
The following question is mainly to be addressed to authorized Toshiba support personnel. What exactly is the limitation of a maximum size of an internal HDD that I could use with my Satellite Pro M30-813?
Recently, I have bought and installed seagate 160 GB SATA drive, onto which I have successfully installed WXP Pro and have been running it for quite a while with no problems. Recently, I have been copying large amount of data from an external hard drive to my new internal disk, and as the files were being copied as I noticed having about 50 GB free space left, I had experienced windows "delayed write failed" and a massive partition failure with no possibility to recover data. The system would no longer boot and the whole MBR was damaged. As the result, I have lost all data on my new disk.
Although, I realize that Toshiba is not responsible for additional hardware that I use with my laptop and that is not officially supported by Toshiba, I am certain that as an end user of a Toshiba product I have the right to know about a max HDD size limitation information for my notebook model. Therefore, I request Toshiba technical support representative to give me a straight official answer to my question.
    Thank you in advance,
    Andrejs

    Hi Andrew
    > The following question is mainly to be addressed to authorized Toshiba support personnel
I think you are in the wrong area if you are looking for an answer from an authorized Toshiba support.
This is a Toshiba user-to-user forum! You will meet here Toshiba notebook owner and enthusiasts who share knowledge and tries solve problems but nobody from Tosh :(
I could provide my experience with the M30 Satellite and the HDD upgrade possibilities.
In my knowledge the Sat M30 supports a 40GB, 60GB and 80GB HDD for sure.
In my opinion you could use the 100GB HDD but bigger HDDs will not run and functions correctly.
So switch to a lower HDD size and enjoy the notebook!
Ive goggled a little bit and found compatible HDD and the part numbers
    HITACHI GBC000Z810 -> 80GB
    HITACHI GBC00014810 -> 80GB
    TOSHIBA HDD2188B -> 80GB
    HITACHI G8C0000Z610 -> 60GB
    HITACHI G8BC00013610 -> 60GB
    TOSHIBA HDD2183 -> 60GB
    TOSHIBA HDD2184 -> 60GB
I hope this could help you a little bit!
    Best regards

  • What is Max HDD size for MacBook Pro 15" bought in 2006-07

    Hi
    I bought a MacBook Pro 15" about 3.5 - 4 yrs ago. The model is A1211.
It came with 120GB HDD, 2GB RAM.
What is the maximum HDD size that this will support? The Apple store employee says, it will support only upto 160 GB. But, I am skeptical it would be that low.
So, was wondering if anybody knows the max size, and also, which HDD would be best. I want at least 320 GB.

You can get a 750 GB drive that is 9.5mm high. As far as I know, the 1 TB drives are all still 12.5 mm high, although that could change at any time.
The fastest 750 GB drive I know of is this one:
    http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/products/laptops/laptop-hard-drives/
It is 7200 RPM. At 5400 RPM, there are many other choices. You might want to shop at Newegg, which often has specials on drives, as does Tiger Direct. Newegg also has reviews of individual drives you can look at.
Personally, I like Western Digital drives, and put the 500 GB Scorpio Black drive in my 2007 MBP, where it has performed without issue. The largest drive that originally shipped with my MBP was a 4200RPM 250 GB drive, the very biggest one you could order in a MBP back then.
Any 2.5 inch SATA drive should work just fine. The only one I would avoid is WD's 640 GB drive because a number of people have has issues with it in their Macs.
You might shop around on line a bit, and if you are torn between two or more drives, post back with what they are and ask for opinions. Everybody has favorite drives, so it may not be possible to get anything other than a bunch of opinions.
One other thing to watch out for. Some drives are sold with or without some form of free fall sensor. Apple has its own built in sensor called the Sudden Motion Sensor. In some machines and drives, there seems to be a conflict between the drive's sensor and Apple's SMS. If that happens, you would need to disable Apple's sensor. Usually it's easier just to select the drive without a built-in sensor and let Apple's SMS work as its designed to do. In the Seagate drive I linked, it's called "G-Force", but would have a different name in a different brand.
Incidentally, you can up your RAM to 3 GB if you like.
    Good luck!

  • Help on Planning Calender and lot size procedure settings

    Hi Gurus,
We have 2 different schedule at the moment for our PO Placing to our supplier :
    1. Planning Calendar D01 --> For Seafreight shipment, PO Placing on bi-weekly basis, every Monday and RDD (Request Delivery Date) is on Thursday (11 days after PO Placing)
    2. Planning Calendar D02 --> For Airfreight shipment, PO Placing on weekly basis, every Friday and RDD (Request Delivery Date) is on Wednesday (5 days after PO Placing)
Now we have required to change the SEAFREIGHT process by having the PO Placing on weekly basis, every Monday and RDD (Request Delivery Date) is on Wednesday (9 days after PO Placing).
Please let me know the step by step procedure to create a new Planning Calendar and Lot Size Procedure to accomodate this requirement?
    Thanks for your help.
    Regards

    Dear Brijesh:
    1. I think you are planning to change the Planning calendare D01.
    2. For this go to MD26- GIVE THE plant / palnning calendar id.
    3. Then in the CAlc rule for spec peroid - change the day from wednesday to Monday.
    4. SAve this and generate periods.
    5. Now in the maeterial master- check if you have the lot size as PK and also planning calendar as d01.
    6. In the planned dleiveyr times you enter 9 days.
Kindly check this and revert back.
