By default: join a specific network

I was using 128 bit WEP until just tonight when I got a new wireless router which does WPA. While using the WEP encryption, my computer was set to join my wireless network by default. This worked perfectly, upon restarting my computer it would automatically reconnect to the internet and all.
Ever since the change to use the new key and WPA, when the computer restarts it does not automatically join the network any longer. In the network tab of system preferences everything is set to automatically join the network, but it doesn't. I know the settings to join the network are correct because when I choose the network from the airport menu item at the top of the Finder, it connects no problem without asking for any keys or passwords of any kind.
Any ideas?
I would like to have this work properly as I run a server off of my machine and need it to be running in the even I should lose power and the machine restarts while I'm not home.

I've got a similar problem. Everything was fine and then I accepted a software update for iTunes and Quicktime. Now, my Mac won't connect to my network automatically. It's a 128 bit WEP key, and I've gone into network connections to verify the "specific network" settings. Seems like it doesn't want the 26 character key.

Excuse my ignorance but I've never had a Mac. I recently got this from a friend and I'm having trouble getting it to connect to my WiFi. I've tried everything I could find on google, but nothing has worked. I've made sure my router isn't filtering Mac addresses, I've tried the $ fix, I've removed and changed my security preferences mutiple times, and I'm out of things to try. It works fine when it's connected to the modem directly, but wireless just won't connect. Every time I try I get the error joining the Airport network "xxxxx" but the computer I'm using to type this is connected just fine. Any help would be much appreciated!!

Click ok. Go to proxies and click. Make sure use passive ftp mode is checked. Go back up and click on the airport bar.  Under by default join-click prefered network. You should now have a window showing all networks available.Click on the one that represents your router and apply. If you network is password protected you will need to inter the password. If this does not work use the assit me option . You can run diagnostics to see if it picks up your network or you can run the assistant. It will ask you to name the network. then continue and check on airport then you will get abox that should show your router and you'll need the password for it. And thenclick apply. • "By default, join" drop-down doesn't have "Preferred Networks" option

I use my laptop on two different networks. I would like it to automatically join whichever one is available. The Mac Help has instructions titled "Choosing preferred AirPort networks" with three steps. Step 1 works fine; I can open network preferences and get to the drop-down labelled "By default, join". It says I should then select the option "Preferred networks" from the drop-down. The problem I have is, there is no such option. The drop-down has only one option, labelled "A specific network".
It works identically on a regular user account and an adminstrator account. I have authenticated.

Can't find the TIL again... might have it bookmarked at work though, but that's the problem... Sorry can't remember the fix right now at all.

  • AirPort "By Default Join"

In my network preferences when I have "Location: Automatic" selected, my AirPort tab's "By Default Join" only allows me to select "A specific network". If I create a new location "Work" I can select "Automatic" and "Preferred Networks". Is this the way it's supposed to be? The problem that I'm running into is I have an AirPort network at home and another at work. I should be able to put the "Location" to Automatic and connect to whichever location I'm at. But that only works if I set my location to work because the automatic is looking for a specific network.?

Hello Rory..Do you have the box checked that says "allow this computer to create networks"??
What I would suggest is to set up at home like this: in system prefs>network> Location :airport > Show Airport> Automatic Check allow this computer to create networks, and check show airport status in menu bar. Get it all set up, and surf away....
When you get to work: system pref's> Location> NEW LOCATION: make your work network settings....,then click to SHOW> network status....
Now go to the menu bar, and turn on airport. Still at the menu bar, click again on the airport symbol after a few seconds, and the signal bars show black not grey.... now the drop down menu should show the emplyer's network. Drag the cursor down so a blue line cover's your boss' network name, and let go: repeat the click: there should now be a check next to the network name.... and any moment too, you should if it is password protected, be challenged for a password, which you enter....
Back at the system prefs, if you click it to SHOW> network status, it should have a green dot next to the airport and say you are connected to the network...
When I have my pref page at Location Automatic Show Airport, and the airport box made blue, I can switch the by default join: to either automatic or
    a specific network....
Tell me.... if you switch the SHOW to "network port configurations" which one is at the top and checked? Airport should be at the top, with a checked box.
Uncheck the ones you do not ever use.
If you leave the ethernet checked in port config's, and you need to plug in,then it will still work: if on automatic...otherwise you need to put it on ethernet... (and enter settings if you have always had this machine only on airport)
I hope this helped at all....

  • Mail: How to check an account ONLY from specific Network Location?

I use multiple macs, and use my .mac account to synchronize mail accounts, rules, smart mailboxes, signatures, etc.
However, I'd actually like to specifically NOT check certain accounts on some machines.
Even though the account settings are synced, I thought I might be able to take advantage of "Network Locations" to create specific network locations like HOME or WORK and thusly create a combination of mail and network location preferences that would solve my particular need. The idea being that it would allow me to specify in mail's settings (somehow) that a particular mail account should only check the server for messages if the current network location is actually WORK, and if the network location was HOME, it should just not check.
Some other apps (ie: Snerdware's Groupcal) will check the network location setting and not perform checks if the current location is not the expected one.
So the question is, is there some way to make Mail.app 2.1.3 on Tiger do this?

30 messages displayed is the default, but you can change that.  On your email page, under "settings" is an option to change the number of messages per page.  One  option is "no limit."

  • How do I get a 1st generation time capsule to join a wifi network?

    OK, I've searched the groups but no luck.  Here's my situation;
I'd like to configure a 1st generation time capsule to join a wifi network ideally with a printer attached to the USB.  My set up is an iMac running 10.9.3, Airport Utility 6.3.2 and a 1st Generation TC with the latest firmware (7.6.4).  I'm trying to connect it to an ADSL Wifi Modem/Router.  I know a cabled connection would give better performance but want a wifi only connection as the printer is in a different room.
I've disabled the network functions (bridge mode) but I can only see wireless options to Create a Wireless Network, Extend a Wireless Network or Off, not to Join.  If I try to extend I get the option to add an SSID, security & passwords but it doesn't seem like parameters to join  -the drop-down doesn't list available networks to join & manually entering the main wifi network and password doesn't work.
Is my desired config even possible?
    Dave

Something.....a Mac or PC will need to have a 5.x version of AirPort Utility installed on the computer.
Perform a factory default reset on the Time Capsule by powering it off for a few minutes. Then, hold in the reset button first and keep holding for an additional 10-12 seconds while you simultaneously plug the power back into the Time Capsule. Release the reset button after the hold period and allow a full minute for  the Time Capsule to restart to a slow, blinking amber light.
Open up AirPort Utility on the computer, select the Time Capsule and click Manual Setup
Click the Base Station tab below the row of icons to type in a device name and password that you want to use for the Time Capsule, set Time Zone, etc.
Click the Wireless tab next to the Base Station tab
Hold down the option or Alt key while you click on the Wireless Mode setting box
Select the Join a wireless network setting
Select the name of the wireless network
Enter the password for the wireless network
    Verify the password
Click Update to save the settings
Note....everything here assumes that the router that provides the wireless network is using WPA2 Personal security, which is the default setting for the Time Capsule.

  • TC joined to AEBS network for g and n devices to connect separately

Our family has a Windows dektop PC which is connected by Ethernet cable to an Airport Extreme Base Station shared wirelessly by two Windows laptops (g compatible), a PowerBook (g compatible, two MacBook Pros (one g compatible and one n)and a printer connected by Ethernet cable. I purchased a TC several weeks ago and joined it to the existing network as a wireless client. At first everything worked fine. So far I'm only backing up the n compatible MacBook Pro. The first backup took a long time, which I expected, but it was successful and subsequent incremental backups went off without a hitch. Recently I've experienced periodic episodes of failed backups seemingly caused by "server error." I've also noticed that the backups are taking way longer than an hour and are 10+GB in size. I tried to replace the AEBS with the TC as base station but was unable to connect the TC to the Internet even though the setup otherwise completed normally.
In talking with an Apple store employee (not Genius Bar), I was to that, if I connect the TC to the AEBS via Ethernet cable, I can change the TC's settings to 802.11n (5Ghz) and leave the AEBS settings to accommodate the g devices. That way the newer MacBook Pro could access the network via the TC bridge while the slower devices would access the AEBS directly. I haven't tried this yet, but can any of you more technically accomplished advise whether this might work?

I don't believe it should be set to extend existing network if you are connecting the TC to your other router through ethernet. Try disabling this, but keep the Internet Connection set to Off (Bridge Mode) on your TC. I think extending it makes the TC connect to your other router through wireless? Come to think of it, this would explain your 27 Mbps transmit rates on the TC. Each "hop" in a wirelessly extended network effectively cuts the network speed in half. And half of 54 is 27.
Are you trying to set up a roaming network, where your MacBook Pro would just revert to the 2.4 GHz network if the 5 GHz is out of range, or do you want to keep separate access points? If you want to set up roaming, then you should have the same SSID and password on all routers. Just be aware that the MBP will connect to the access point with the strongest signal, so that might not always be the 5 GHz network.
I have two unique SSIDs on my network, but since they're both on the same subnet it actually acts as one network (just gives off the impression of having two). I just can't do roaming with my setup, but that's fine as the distance between my MBP and TC is usually not great enough to interfere with the connection. In this situation, any wireless client needs to connect to the specific network you wish them to join. My MBP always joins my 5 GHz network to gain full N speeds, although it can back up when accessing the 2.4 GHz network.
Try reading this pdf from Apple to learn more about which setup you want. Page 40 has more information about setting up a roaming network:
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/DesigningAirPort_Networks10.5-Windows.pdf
Also, about your backup, try connecting your MBP to your TC via ethernet to make sure that the sparsebundle isn't corrupt or anything. That way, if it backs up, you know it's just a wireless connection issue.

  • Joining an existing network as a client

I've had an Airport Express for about 3 years...recently needed to reconfigure because of upgrade to my Belkin wireless router security.
I need the steps to join an existing network as a client, including providing the WPA password. I've been throught the setup guides...have gotten as far as a) connecting to the network using the Windows utility
    b) seeing the AEBS in the Airport Admin utility
....but from this point, I'm lost.
    Windows XP Home, SP2.
    Thank you.

Hello showbizkid41. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
To set up the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) as a "Wireless Client," using the AirPort Admin Utility, either connect to the AX's wireless network or temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then, try these settings:
    AirPort tab
o Base Station Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
o Wireless Mode: Join an Existing Wireless Network (Wireless Client)
o Wireless Network: <type in your wireless network name or select it from the pop-up menu>
    o Wireless Security: WPA Personal
o Password: <enter your wireless network security password or key>

  • Did update - now my default is another wireless network?

Did the update and now whenever I re-boot, the default wireless network is someone else's in my building.
How can I change this to recognize my own trusted network as a default????
    Somewhat related question -
Also, when someone is at my place (before and after update), whay can't they sign on and pick my wireless network. I give them the password and they stille can't get on...is this normal??? Am I missing something simple?

You can tell it to join your own network via Network Prefs>Airport. In the "By default, join" option, insert your network instead of the "automatic" option.
The second problem sounds security related. What security do you have in place?

  • There was an error joining the Airport network "NameOfTheNetwork"

    Hi there
I am French in London for an internship. I took a flat to share with an other girl. My father advised me to take a Mac for my specific utilisation (internet, music, movies...) and Macs are so cool exept for internet in my case. It doesn't work at all. The network of my landlord is hidden. So, I go in "other", I type manually the network name and the WEP password... Always the same message : There was an error joining the Airport network "NameOfTheNetwork". I tried several times with always the unlucky result.
My landlord said that there wasn't this kind of problem with her other flatmates before me...
I am pratically sure that the problem doesn't comme from my Mac because I reached to join an unprotected other network which appear sometimes (but the signal is not enought strong).
Is there an incompatibility between my Mac and the setup Network? And what do I have to to do to fix it?
I visited a lot of forums but :
1-I didn't find any topics on my specific problem
2-There explanations (when the topic is closed to my issue) are not clear and seem not to correspond to my issue.
Is there someone who can help me please? I really need internet!!!!!
    Emma

This confirms it is a WEP issue.
You will need to find the HEX key.
One of the problems with WEP is that the actual standard relies on a 10 character HEX key for 40bit WEP and a 26 character HEX key for 128bit WEP.
In order to make things easier for people, vendors use certain algorithms to convert simple alphanumeric passwords (or passphrases) into HEX keys, thus enabling people to use simple memorable WEP password rather than lengthy HEX keys.
The problem is that different vendors use different algorithms to generate the HEX key and therefore a ASCII password on an AEBS will be hashed differently on a Netgear client and vice versa.
One thing is a 13 character 128 bit WEP password will be hashed by all vendors in the same way (if you use 40bit WEP then a 5 character password is required).
Though sometimes not even that works and the HEX key must be used regardless.

  • Error joining the AirPort Network - revisited

I just got my iBook back from the shop and am trying to reestablish the link with my Airport Express. I've reset the unit, gone through numerous hoops.
The AirPort Express currently has a green light, and my router shows it's connected. Yet, when I try to connect, or try to reconfigure, I get the message "There was an error joining the AirPort network "Apple Network xxxxxx""
I have no idea what firmware is on the unit, nor do I have the means to update the firmware if needed (as I cannot get a connection to it).
Yes, I have a good internet connection. I'm posting this on an older iBook ... which is not AirPort ready.
    Thanks in advance!
Note ... This topic came up in June (2006) ... and is archived, yet unanswered.

    Ciao all.
I'll tack onto this thread rather than starting a new one. It sounds like similar-ish territory.
We've had Airport Express for about three weeks after our Airport Extreme gave up the ghost after 14 months. We have a DSL modem connected to Airport Express, and three computers - eMac, iBook G4 and Powerbook G4 - connected wirelessly. Or we did, until tonight.
On the eMac, I lost my wireless connection. The Airport symbol was still black, and full strength, but my time connected stats disappeared. At the same time, my wife had the same thing happen on her Powerbook. Then the Airport symbol grayed out. As did the Powerbook. I fired up the iBook and the same thing was happening.
Briefly, for a couple of seconds, the Airport symbol would return to black, with, on a couple of occasions, the time connected stats reappearing. We would be connected again. Then the symbol would gray out again.
And the network name would have disappeared from the Airport menu.
If I turned off Airport and turned it on again, the symbol would be greyed out, but the network name would be there. Only, when I tried to connect, I would get the dreaded An Error Occurred Joining The Selected Wireless Network.
And I couldn't access the Airport Express via either Set Up or Admin.
I rest the Airport Express back to factory settings. The Airport symbol remained greyed out, but the Apple default wireless network was visible in the Airport menu. But I would still get the dreaded An Error Occurred, etc message.
Through Airport Set up, I was able to detect the Airport Express' default name and even the network name, but still wasn't able to connect to it.
Trying again, I was told that no new Airport networks could be found.
I've had basically the same results trying all three computers.
In terms of lights, the Express will sit there with a solid green light through all these shenanigans.
The internet connection is solid. Plugging the modem straight into the computer puts me online.
Do we have - as I fear - a lemon of an Airport Express after three weeks?
Hopefully someone can ... help us ...
    TIA

    SSID is Enabled
    Security setings are;
    WEP
    Default key is 1

hi... first off make sure that you are entering valid network key... if you are entering valid key in...try setting up $ sign before the network key and try connecting to the network...

  • Setting applications to use specific network interfaces

How do I configure my computer such that specific applications will default to a different network interface than all the rest?
I want to set it up so that Adium always tries to use AirPort first and everything else uses ethernet if it's available.
    Powerbook G4 1.5 Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   1GB RAM

You can't (normally) get there from here.
What you're trying to do is affect the routing (route certain traffic through a specific interface). The issue is that routing works at the IP level, not the application level. This means that you can tell the system to route a.b.c.d (e.g. the address of the IM server you're connecting to) through a speciic router at w.x.y.z (e.g. the AirPort).
In order to do this, though, you need to have different IP address/subnet masks on each interface.
For example, assuming your wired ethernet is using 192.168.1.2/255.255.255.0 and your wired ethernet router is at 192.168.1.1, and your AirPort interface is using 10.1.1.2 with the AirPort router at 10.1.1.1 you can run the command:
    <pre class=command>sudo route add a.b.c.d 10.1.1.1</pre>
and all traffic for a.b.c.d will go over the AirPort link.
Note that it doesn't matter what protocol you use - any traffic destined for a.b.c.d, whether it's AIM, HTTP, FTP or anything else - or what application you use - Adium, Safari, FireFox, etc. - they'll all use the AirPort link.
Note that this technique will NOT work if you have both interfaces on the machine configured in the same subnet, but this is not a supported configuration, so you shouldn't be doing that anyway.

  • Auto Join Non Broadcast Networks

It appears that if I turn off the broadcast feature (meaning I check the box for Create A Closed Network) I not not automatically join the network. Even if it's a remembered network, if it's not broadcasting it's identity I cannot automatically join it. I have to enter the network name and password each and every time.
    Is that correct?

The setting for fixed IP address vs. use DHCP is for the network adapter hardware, not the specific network.  There is no mechanism in OS-X, Windows, Linux ... to do something like you ask.  The only way to handle this would be to use an external usb wireless adapter for one of the cases (either DHCP or fixed) and set the internal adapter up for the other case.

  • Airport Extreme - Cannot join a wireless network

I just purchased the Airport Extreme and cannot get it to find a wireless network. In the Airport Utility I receive the following messages, "Joining a wireless network….An error occurred joining the selected wireless network.". I cannot proceed past this point. When I select "manual" configure I get the same error message. I've tried repeatedly disconnecting the cable & power from the modem and the airport extreme and then restarting but nothing happens. Any advice would be appreciated!

If you have a cable modem, you will need to power it off for at least 15-20 minutes and pull the battery if is has one as it is remembering the last device (probably your computer) that is was connected to. Power it back up after 20 minutes and connect the ethernet cable to the WAN port on the AEBS.
Suggest you do a factory default reset to clear the corrupted settings and start over again on the AEBS
    Power down the AEBS
Hold in the reset button +and keep holding it in+ as you plug the power back in
Release the reset button after approximately 8-10 seconds
Temporarily, connect an ethernet cable from your computer to one of the LAN <-> ports on the AEBS to help AirPort Utility connect with the device.
You will be configuring the AEBS to "Share a public IP address" and "create a wireless network. The guided setup will step you through.
