By Lenovo policy, OEM license won't activate the Office trial

I just bought my ThinkPad. It came with a 60-day trial of Office 2007 Professional. Separately, I bought an OEM license on eBay. It's authentic, with the box, blank disks, printed cards, and hologram. But the OEM license gets rejected. I couldn't figure out why until I read this thread, which explains that Lenovo locks you into buying a license from them.
I suppose I could buy a retail version of Office Professional with the disks, but I didn't want to spend that much. I've installed Open Office 3.0 and may just stick with this free alternative, though I really wanted MS Publisher.
Any suggestions? Would the OEM license work if I can get uninstall the trial and borrow some OEM Office 2007 disks?

Solved!
Go to Solution.

I had no problems installing and activating Office 2007 Home and Student edition after uninstalling the preloaded trial version of Office Professional 2007.
FWIW, I would imagine that it's Microsoft's somewhat draconian licensing that is stopping you rather than a Lenovo policy.

No. Apple does not unlock iPhones. ONLY the carrier it's locked to can authorize unlocking it. If it's locked to Vodafone, contact Vodafone and find out if you qualify to get it unlocked and how much it will cost.

  • How to apply an Outlook 2013 Open license to a pre-installed Office Home and Business 2013 installation for Email Auto Archiving functionality

    We're deploying new Dell pc's.
Unfortunately we have a large existing install base of Office Home and Business in the field due to customers buying Office bundled on Dell machines.  Buying Open License Outlook licenses is more cost effective than upgrading to Office Pro Plus for all
these users and is our preferred path.  We aren’t sure how to apply these Open License Outlook licenses since the Home and Business installations work off a single license key for all the applications

    Hi,
Isn't the Office bundled on Dell machines already activated?
If it's the OEM version that has been installed on the machines and you want to use retail product keys to activate the Office, it's not possible. You will need to uninstall the OEM version and install the retail version.
You can check the OEM licensing system here:

To find more help about OEM depolyment, I should recommend you to get contact with the OEM Reseller Support System

    Hi,
It depends on how you got the Office. If it's a trial version, you may need to enter the trial product key to activate the Office; If it's from your company, you need KMS or a MAK key to activate your Office.
Basically for activation questions, we suggest you contact your local customer service to get the assistance. In this forum we mainly focus on the client issues.
You can find your local customer service number from this link below:

  • OEM licensing legalities, re: free upgrade to W10

An OEM license comes with a Lenovo system and  a set of terms and conditions. Lenovo supports the hardware, however owners are allowed to backup and restore an image of an existing OEM licensed product and can legally restore to factory level. You can not legally port the OS to another motherboard. Before W10, upgrades from one OS to another always included a new product key, e.g.  if you had an OEM copy of Vista on your Lenovo and you upgraded it to W7, you had to enter a new product key. This broke the OEM licensing agreement you had with Lenovo. You no longer had an OEM license. It appears that the upgrade to W10 will be handled differently. MS states that your existing OS license will be 'consumed' by W10.  This appearently means that MS will not recognise the previous OS it belonged to.  Though not completely clear, you will still have an OEM license asoociated  with Lenovo, but it will be a W10 license.  MS Answers MVPs are saying that you will not be able to restore a backup image of a previos  OS (W7/8)  after the W10 upgrade install has completed.  They state that the motherboard will be (legally) associated with W10, but ...  As the OS does not make changes at the physical layer of the stack, will Lenovo be making changes to the BIOS on all Lenovo systems to associate W10 with the motherboard if the user upgrades from  W7 or W8 ?

Here is the tech speak ... for those interested. SLP = System Locked Preinstallation
SLIC = System License Internal Code
OEM = Original Equipment Manufacturer 1. The OEM pays for SLP OEM license to Microsoft.2. Microsoft provides the OEM a SLIC key in place of a CD key.3. Microsoft provides the OEM a SLP certificate file.4. The SLP certificate must be matched up to the SLP code embedded in the BIOS ROM (also provided by Microsoft).
As an OEM PC manufacturer (Lenovo), can pre-activate Windows in mass without needing to activate manually over the internet. They just need those three things to ensure that it is a valid license. To recap, they need: 1. SLP code embedded in the BIOS ROM.
    2. SLIC key (in place of a CD key).
    3. SLP certificate file (must match SLP code in BIOS ROM). When all three conditions are satisfied, the Windows OS will be in a permanent activated state and be considered geniune. The Legal Stuff...
“A computer that was obtained from an OEM (e.g. Lenovo) and that has an ACPI_SLIC table in the system BIOS must have a valid Windows marker in that ACPI_SLIC table. This Windows marker is important for volume license customers who plan to use Windows volume license media to re-image or upgrade an OEM system according to the re-imaging rights in the volume license agreement. You cannot activate such a system by using KMS. However, you can activate the system by using a multiple activation key (MAK) or a retail key.,”  Microsoft. Key Management Service (KMS)
Multiple Activation Key (MAK) Prior to activation, a BIOS SLIC table contains information that is referred to by Microsoft as the OEMTableID. The data includes a string of characters called a SLIC key that identifies the computer as eligible for OEM activation. Microsoft licenses a different public SLIC key to each computer manufacturer. A single computer manufacturer's SLIC key may vary based on the version of the operating system preloaded on the computer.  Providing different SLIC keys for different manufacturers and different operating system versions ensures that a given Windows operating system product key can only unlock a single model of computer.

  • Powerbuilder won't activate after upgrade

We currently have PowerBuilder 12.5 installed on a Windows XP machine.  This was licensed and activated properly.   So we tried to install 12.5.2 on a new Windows 7 machine.  After upgrade, when I ran Powerbuilder, it came up as unlicensed (or as evaluation version).  I went to the SAP site and regenerated a new license key for my machine and applied it, but it just won't activate.  There are three options for us to choose:
    New System
    Display System
    Edit System
We first tried the 'New System' option since it is an upgrade to 12.5.2 on a new machine (which we intend to move to).  However, the option for us to choose from the 'Product version' or 'System Type' simply won't show any drop down option for us to choose, nor does it allow us to enter.  Hence, we tried the 'Display System' and downloaded the license to update license.  It just won't activate.
Has anybody ran into this issue and how was it solved?

    Hi All,
I finally got a response from Nina who gave me the instruction on how to upgrade.  I followed the instruction to 'Edit System' instead of 'New System', and not use IE.  The reason I could not see drop down was due to IE 11 (have to use IE9 or before).  Now my PowerBuilder 12.5.2 was upgraded successfully.
    Thanks all, especially Nina.

  • Including an OEM license in a distibution image if you have licenses for all pcs?

I am an IT consultant who does work with a company who is seeking to get in to image based deployements to ease the buren on IT staff when prepping a new PC for users.
They want to create an image that can be used to be deployed to many new PCs.
All of the new PCs are being purchased with OEM adobe acrobat bundled with the systems.
Is it legal to use an OEM license as a part of the image if each individual station does have a license that was purchased with it?
or will this cause issues as you're really distributing the same serial # to multiple computers?
I'd think you need a volume license to do this or load adobe acrobat OEM after a system has been imaged but i wanted to confirm before raising this issue with the IT director who requested that we include adobe acrobat as a part of the image that will be used to deploy new systems.

My opinion is you would need a volume based license, as you will have problems when you register the software. You can only register the adobe license key so many times, and from past experience you need to unregister the key before using it on another machine otherwise the key gets locked.
I would install the software and see if registration is required. Then test in an image but i am pretty sure that you need the volume license
    http://www.adobe.com/aboutadobe/volumelicensing/
The other alternative is to roll out the software using group policy or even a login script. Adobe Acrobat is very easy to do this by using the adobe tuner.
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=3564
Ifmember is a good tool to do this, and GPO using a custom MST would be the way to go.

  • BRAND NEW LENOVO K300 5316 1BU (WON'T BOOT FROM DVD SUPERJULTI DRIVE/CD-WRITER

Would appreciate info from the Lenovo Community as to what might be the problem and a fix.
I just received my new Lenovo K300 5316 1BU. As one of the first tasks I made a Lenovo Repair Disc.
To test my disc I rebooted my computer with disc in drive. During reboot I pressed F12 to get to the proper menu.
I chose the cd/dvd drive as the first boot option. It showed that the drive was recognized stating Boot Priority but then went directly into my Windows 7 deskop.
I called Tech Support and tried everything with them with the same results.
They instructed me to do a complete System Restore to see if that corrects the problem.
I have not done this yet since I will do a backup of my present setup, not to loose all my hard work and time setting up all my programs and settings.
Before I do a complete system restore I would appreciate any comments or suggestions from the community regarding this situation.
Do you also believe that doing a full system restore will help or should I send this computer back?
I do find it hard to believe that a computer less than a week old would have this problem with the DVD Supermulti Drive /CD writer.
If I still have no success after a full restore or a resolve from the Lenovo IdeaCentre Community then I will return this computer back to TigerDirect.
To conclude I would like to mention the following regarding this brand new Lenovo K300 5316 1BU top of the line desktop computer.
One of the reasons I purchased this particular desktop was because of the Lenovo Windows 7 ENHANCED operating system that Lenovo has been advertising so much.
To my surprise and disappointment, this BRAND NEW Lenovo Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit does not have the Enhance version, it is Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit only.
Apparently, Lenovo is making some with Enhanced and some without.
Finally, another reason I purchased the 1BU version is because it has a TV Tuner.
To my surprise again, the TV Tuner card in this model does not have an FM Tuner, which almost all TV Tuner Cards have. So, as a result, no FM Radio with Windows 7 Media Center.
Thank you for taking the time to read this long post, but thought it was important to share with the community.
Comments and Help will be most appreciated.

What brand DVD drive did you install? Some third-party drives won't boot by holding down the C key at startup, because they lack the Apple/OEM drive's ROM programming. I recently installed a Memorex (manufactured by LG) DVD burner in a B&W G3, which is recognized by Toast and (with PatchBurn) the iApps. The compatibility problem occurs when selecting a CD/DVD as the startup disk using the Startup Disk Preferences/control panel or by holding down the C key during the restart. In either case, the drive ejects the disk during the POST, so that I have to immediately close the tray and hold down the C key again, to persuade it to boot from the disk. Is this similar to what you're experiencing?

  • OEM license is good or Pain

    Dear Admins,
Please let me know something. If I purchase a Dell Tower Server and install Windows server 2008 R2 64 Bit OEM Edition. In future some files are deleted in that Windows Server, so if we have to format that server. Does the OEM license will also die once Windows
Server is formatted oresle again we can install the Windows server OEM License on that same Dell Tower server. Just confused and want to know, How does OEM works. Quick response and support needed and appreciated.
    Best Regards,
    Fahad Ahmed.

    Hi Fahad,
I already replied to your other question.
If your windows currepted and you have to rebuild the server you can use the same OEM from the same machine. Only limitation is you can't use the OEM from one machine to other also if your machine blown away or its not use able any more you can't use this
OEM license any where else. It will die with the machine.
But again if you only need to rebuild you can use the same license key. I am not sure if there is a limit for how many times you can use the OEM key to activate windows on the same machine.
    hope it helps.
    Thanks
