  • Remove built-in HDD password (Satellite Pro L300)

I already posted a topic but it didn't get any working answers, and I can't post in it to bump it any more.
Anyway, I know the password, and I can boot up into Windows, get into BIOS, etc..I just can't remove the password, not change it. There's no BIOS user password set, or a supervisor password set, just an HDD password. I want to remove it and just have the Windows XP passwords. This is really frustrating now. I just upgraded to the latest BIOS version about an hour ago, and still no luck
    Any ideas?
These are the suggestions I tried:
"You should be able to remove the password by first entering the current password, then just hitting <enter> for both of the "new password" entries.
If that's not clearing the password, then something else is amiss. :-("
The thing is, there isn't a thing for current password, new password and confirm new password, there's just one thing that says built-in HDD password within the security bit of the BIOS setup, and no matter what you enter, the changes aren't reflected
Edit: Seems you can't change or remove the HDD password. How ridiculous.

If you didn't set a hard drive password and the system suddenly starts asking for one, that is one symptom of a drive failure.  As far as I know, there is no way to reset, remove, or otherwise defeat a hard disk password once it is set so under those circumstances, I would treat the drive as failed and shop for a replacement.  If the system is still under warranty, a Premier Authorized Service Provider would be the best option.

  • Satellite Pro 6100 - "Built-in HDD Password" error at startup

Hi, my laptop (Satellite Pro 6100 P4-M 1.7 GHz/15TFT/256MB/40GB/DVD-CDRW/LAN/WiFi/BT/W2K or XP) has rather recently started prompting me with a message "Built-in HDD Password" at boot up. I've never set any passwords on the hard disk in the past, though in desperation of trying to get the laptop running, have tried all the possible passwords that I've ever had. Nothing's working, and I am stranded with a dead laptop on my hands. I would appreciate any help/advice that anyone can render.
    Thanks.

    Hi Khurram,
Sadly I think you will need to replace your hard drive. If your notebook is definitely asking for a hard drive password then there is no way of bypassing this and the only way that I know of recovering this situation is to send the hard drive to a specialist company who specialise in this kind of recovery (usually for forensic puposes, Police, armed forces, etc.). This can prove quite expensive.
The easiest (and cheapest) option would be for you to replace the hard drive and then restore your system and data (either from a backup if you have one, or else from the Toshiba recovery discs).

If you have not set an HDD password, and you are now getting a prompt for one, it means that the hard drive has failed.  Sorry.

  • How to prevent user password being reset to the same password?

    Hi,
As you all know, domain admin has the power to reset user password.  Let's think of the following scenario:
if an admin lets a user reset his password to use the same string, this action means he could nullify company policy on password which requires user's last N passwords being recorded in the history.
We could very well imagine that the admin reset his own personal password in order to bypass company policy.
I have asked partner forum to see if there's a way to prevent such thing, but the reply I got is "No".
I wanted to know if anyone of you have any idea to prevent such thing from happening?
Or if it's possible to get the hash value of users past N password to see if he's always using the same password?
Thanks in advance for your ideas.

Good rules is better alternative to complex policy.
Combine password history with time interval between changes.

    Enforce password history
The Enforce password history policy setting determines the number of unique new passwords that must be associated with  a
user account before an old password can be reused .
The possible values for this Group Policy setting are:
    A user-defined number from 0 through 24.
    Not defined.
    Discussion
Password reuse is an important concern in any organization. Many users want to reuse the same password for their account over a long period of time. The longer the same password is used for
a particular account, the greater the chance that an attacker will be able to determine the password through brute force attacks. If users are required to change their password, but nothing prevents them from using the old password or continually reusing a
small number of passwords, the effectiveness of a good password policy is greatly reduced.
Specifying a low number for Enforce password history allows users to continually use the same small number of passwords repeatedly. If you do not also set Minimum
password age, users can change their password as many times in a row as necessary in order to reuse their original password.
If you set Enforce password history to a number greater than zero, users must come up with a new password every time they are required to change their old one. This
improves security, but it can increase the risk that users will write down their passwords so they do not forget them.
If you set the value to the maximum of 24, it helps to ensure that vulnerabilities caused by password reuse are kept to a minimum.
For this policy setting to be effective in your organization, configure Minimum password age so that you do not allow passwords to be changed immediately. Enforce
password history should be set at the level that combines a reasonable maximum password age with a reasonable password change interval requirement for users.

  • How to get rid of the user password during start up of the newly upgraded 10.6 Mac to 10.7 Lion?

    Hi All,
I previously ran Mac 10.6 Snow Leopard on my MacBook. I upgraded to 10.7 Lion today and it was successfully done. After the Mac had restarted, it took me to the usual login page (now with grey background) and was asking me for a user password. I didn't set up a password on the 10.6. I only used to hit the Return key on the keyboard and the Mac was logging me in. And now with Lion, it asks for password and whenever I press the Return key on the keyboard, it does not log me in. It shows the password hint instead. The hint says "Wala" (A filipino term for "none". I indicated it like that when I setup my user account). And Lion does not let me login without typing in a password. I don't know what to type since I don't have a password setup. Is there a way to bypass this? Can someone help shed light on this? Thank you.

As Baltwo said, you should have a password set on your computer for secutity reasons. You can set it to automatically log you on if you are the only user when starting up and you don't need to input the password.
What Baltwo was getting to was to make sure nothing was in the field such as a space. Apparantly, it won't let you log into it without a password.
I seem to remember a default password in past systems. I think it was computer. Try typing that in. If it doesn't work, then follow the steps in this article and set a password for your user account.

  • Portege R500 - No response to user password

Having just taken delivery of a new Portege R500, I was trying to make a bluetooth connection when a screen came up asking to set up both an administrator and user password. I set up the user password only, typing it in once (but was not asked to confirm it.) When I switched on the computer again there was a request for the password in the top right hand corner. But when I typed it in, nothing happens apart from the computer going off after 3 tries.
It is the correct password but I did notice that when I was originally putting it in the series of *** only appeared with the second letter. Is there any simple solution or does it have to go back to the dealers? I have no data on it only have added programmes so far.
    Thank you for any advice.

If there is nothing specially on the HDD I recommend you to use recovery image and make clean OS installation. After doing this there is second chance to make a Bluetooth connection.

  • Sending user/password to OAS virtual path?

    Hello -
OAS allows you to restrict access to a virtual path you define for say a group of PL/SQL packages. If you try to access the path from the web, it will prompt you for an OAS user id and password. The security is great, but for complicated apps, it pops up (as it should) on every different virtual path, which is kind of annoying for the user.
Is there any way to pass the user/password info to the virtual path to bypass the popup window? Maybe an HTML Post?
Thanks in advance for your help
