Bypassing iTunes

My Classic iPod has issues. Briefly:
It no longer syncs with iTunes, in fact it causes it to crash. It will mount on the desktop if iTunes isn't running (I can access the drive through the Finder, and the iPod itself works fine). I've tried all the usual rebooting the iPod, different cable, different Mac - the problem is clearly with the iPod. Obviously I can get things from the iPod to the desktop if I want without problem, but without being able to connect to itunes, nothing new can go on. I was wondering if there's some app or technique for adding things directly without going through iTunes?

Even getting some other 3rd party iPod managing software, may not solve your problem, if your iPod  hardisk is dying.
Do the iPod Disk Diagnostic, as posted earlier by tt2, it wont solve your problem, but help in troubleshooting.

you can use the iPod as an external storage drive, but content that is added to the iPod using windows explorer will not play on the iPod. see:

  • Using iTunes to convert a file bypassing iTunes GUI

I remember reading somewhere that there is a command line you can use to convert from format to format in iTunes, bypassing the GUI. I cant find the site now. Can anyone help?
It was something like itunes convert aaa.mp3 bbb.m4a
    Thanks

    Hi Andy!
Our customers have this requirement to convert some "flat-file" into some XML format via Business Connector quite often. The best way (as the last post sugessted) is indeed to use the "EDI-Adapter" which is free of charge (service.sap.com/connectors).
With that module you can convert all flat-files (delimiter based, offset based, mixed, even classical EDI formats, ...) based on some definition ( = template). Be careful the EDI-Adapter Module download page states that it is supported for BC version 4.6 . However it is absolutely no problem to use it in BC 4.7 versions as well. Remember that you will NOT get any official support by SAP when using the EDI-Adapter module.
Simply import the EDI-Module as general BC package (server/replicate/inbound directory).
Generally it is very powerful, stable and well documented ...
    Best regards, Andy

  • Upload custom mp3's to iCloud bypassing iTunes Match?

I want to upload mp3's that I have made to the cloud and not have to sit for 10 minutes (or more) while iTunes Match looks for something it's not going to find.  Is there a way to temporarily disable iTunes Match on my computer  I uploading to the cloud and turn it back on after?  Or something?  And if so, will it just hang up again anyway when iTunes Match is re-enabled?
FYI, I'm doing this on my home computer.  Once the files are in my iTunes there, I will be syncing playlists that use these files to my iPod and iPad.
    Thanks for any input!!

(the reason I don't want to wait is because I'm trying to add it to a playlist, and it won't let me because it's not in the cloud yet.  I'm usually adding them and then need to go - can't sit around and wait for something useless!)

  • Can't find audiobook downloaded directly to ipod touch.  Bypassing itunes.

I have transferred an audiobook from an on-line library to my computer to my ipod touch. I can't see it in the ipod touch but when I go to transfer it again it says it is already on the device. It is a WMA audiobook and it bypasses itunes. I can't download it to itunes. Any ideas?

you can change the four options that you get at the bottom of the music app by going to 'more' then hitting 'edit' in the top left, drag the four you want to the bottom.

  • Moving videos to ipod bypassing iTunes

I have an external hdd with a few (for iPod converted) mp4 and m4v files. Quite a few gigs.
My MacBook running iTunes doesn't have a lot of space left, so I can't move the videos to my iTunes library.
What would be a good solution to get my videos straight onto my iPod without using disk space on iTunes? Does anybody have a good idea?
    Thanks and best regards,
    Christoph

What would be a good solution to get my videos straight onto my iPod without using disk space on iTunes?
You mean you want to get videos onto the iPod without using disk space on your internal HD when you add the videos to the iTunes library.
You have to use iTunes to get videos onto your iPod.
My MacBook running iTunes doesn't have a lot of space left, so I can't move the videos to my iTunes library
    Sure you can.
iTunes prefs -> Advanced - Importing. Uncheck Copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library.
The songs will get added to the library but will stay on the external drive.
Make sure to recheck this box after you have added the videos so the music will get copied over to the internal drive.
If you try to play them with the drive not connected, iTunes will tell you that it cannot locate the file and ask if you want to locate it.
When it's connected, it will work fine.
Connect the drive & plug in the iPod to put the videos onto the iPod.

  • HT204019 Why can't you make custom ringtones and apply them to your iphone without bypassing iTunes on a Mac or PC?

I just don't think doing 18 steps just to get 1 ringtone is necessary...and if it is, it should be changed.

    You can. Get Garageband:

  • Can you transfer an iPhone back up from PC to iCloud without using iTunes?

    All self explanatory.
Having major issues with iTunes, so I'm wondering if there is a way I can bypass iTunes to transfer the stored backup to the iCloud so I can restore my phone?

An iphone backup stored in itunes cannot be copied to icloud as an icloud backup.  Nor can a computer copy down an icloud backup.

  • Updating iPOD with a song without using iTunes

    Hi all,
I was wondering if it was possible to:-
    1) Connect an iPOD to a computer
    2) Automatically add a song to the iPOD from the computer
    3) Disconnect the iPOD once the song has been added and synced.
This system must work with multiple iPODs, hence the need to bypass iTunes.
    Is it possible?
    iPod   Windows XP Pro

    Hi,
The machine the iPods connect to will be owned by different people.
The goal is to add a chosen MP3 to each iPOD as it is docked with the computer and then, once disconnected, the MP3 will be shown on the iPOD.
Thanks for getting back to me,
    John

  • Questions about mac mini iTunes server, streaming to macbook pro, ipads, etc.

I'm thinking about getting a mac mini to work with my NAS as a iTunes server. I have a bunch of questions about this. I will have two iPhones, a few iPads, and a laptop that will be accessing the files. I have iTunes match. This is basically to keep an always on computer for hosting the music/movies. My questions are as follows . . .
#1 Are there any good, comprehensive guides to show you how to do this?
#2 Can the movies be accessed when not at home on the shared network?
#3 Can the iPads or the macbook pro download the shared movies to be stored locally?
#4 Back to #3, how will it work on my macbook pro with listening to music (I have iTunes match)? Say i go to library and I break out my macbook pro and I don't have internet. What happens if I download music while at home onto my macbook pro to listen to it when I go to the library? Will i start a new library on my macbook pro? How will that mesh with the home server when I come back.
#5 Is there a way to mirror files or folders? So something that I have on my macbook pro will also mirror on the home server.
Thanks for your help on this. I'll post any follow up questions.

    1. I want to replace the Optical drive with a 2TB SATA. can I use this 2.5 inch?
I do not know if it is the same model number, but this one will work in your MBP:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/SEAGATE%20OWC/ST2000LM003M/
    2. I want to replace the HD with a 128GB SSD 840. When I replace these drives, will my OS still be in tact? I have never done this job before.
No. You will have to format the drives in Disk Utility>Erase to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and then install the OSX by using the original install disks.
3.) I want to replace the ram sticks to max capacity. This is 2 2GB sticks, Correct?
No.  An early 17" 2008 MBP will accept 6GB RAM with the following specifications:  200-pin PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM.  The best sources of Mac compatible RAM are OWC and Crucial.
    4.) Most difficult...
I want to extend the monitor wirelessly to a projector. I thought about using Apple TV and Airplay. However, support for airplay is for MacBooks 2011 and newer. I thought of using a PS3 and the media server, but I think this brings on a format compatibility issue. (my library is so large I could not afford to convert all my movies to MP4.) So, how would you recommend I put my extended monitor with VLC player onto a projector?
Could I possibly connect the MBP to a Mac Mini as an extension? would this work natively? I would rather use a VGA cord than F with 3rd party app BS.
    Cannot help you there.
5..) I want to Bypass iTunes this time around. I would prefer to use Finder and VLC to manage all of my music. I mostly play all my music on shuffle, so, could I create a playlist on VLC with all of my music and play it randomly? (im sure this is possible but i'd like to organize all my plans with confirmation.)
You are not obligated to use iTunes.
6.) Can i upgrade the keyboard to backlit? i've read that this is possible.
All MBPs have back lighted keyboards.  Your either needs a NVRAM reset or a repair.
    Ciao.

  • "Itunes can not connect to this Ipod. An unknown error occurred." I get this message when I plug my Ipod touch into my Imac. I have restored the Ipod and have the latest Itunes. I have tried different cables and a macbook.

I have an Ipod touch 8GB, an Imac and an apple laptop. I have had this Ipod for years and it has been synced at different times to my Imac and laptop. Recently the battery ran way down on my Ipod. I plugged it into my Imac. After it charge I had to restore it. After I restored it Itunes couldn't connect to it because, "An unknown error occurred". I tried to connect it to Itunes on my laptop and got the same error message. I have tried different USB cables. Since Itunes won't connect, I can't do another restore. I don't know what do try from here.
Some additional info that might be related to this. Just before this Ipod problem came up I crashed my hard disk on the Imac. I had to erase it and reload all my stuff (I was able to copy the contents to a hard drive connected to my laptop using the firewire - I couldn't use time machine because of the crashed HD.) My Imac has been restored to the latest Itunes - I am running OSX 10.6.8.

    Thanks for the help Ricky.
I did put my iPod into DFU and iTunes recognized it in restore mode. After restore I am back where I was before - iTunes cannot connect because of an unknown error.
I have installed Jailbreak to see if I can bypass itunes but haven't succeeded. I can't get my computer to recopgnize the iPod as a device.
I'll take it to a Genius bar next time I am in the area of one. Until then I'll probably continue to try hacks to get it connected.

  • TS1424 Some but not all of my purchases from iTunes store (TV shows) have been downloading in a Quicktime format that can't be viewed via iTunes or on apple TV (1st gen).  I get error message when I try to convert.

Since I have a new iMac and now use Mountain Lion, I am observing that TV shows purchased in iTunes sometimes download in a Quicktime format that will not open in iTunes.  In some but not all cases, I right click "open in" and select iTunes and then it will play.  However, this doesn't always work.  When I open in Quicktime and try to export to iTunes, that won't work.  When I try Wundershare's Video conversation program, it won't even accept the file.  What's going on here?  Any ideas?  Please reply [email protected] with any suggestions.

  • Itunes is not syncing my music though it shows in my library

I have a new laptop and downloaded the new version of itunes. Ive successfully added all my songs into itunes. However, when I go to sync, it doesn't. Yes, I have clicked the sync music and sync tones buttons. Yes, it shows at the bottom (storage space) and changes with these selections. It goes through the syncing steps at the top "syncing Cambria" "step 1 of 4". It appears to go through each step. Afterward, however, nothing has changed on my iphone. I've downloaded a program called CopyTrans which allowed me to add my music manually (bypassing itunes). But I am unable to transfer my ringtones. I don't understand why it would act like it is syncing and has all my songs and tones in the library but will not actually sync to my phone. HELP! I've been dealing with this ALL DAY!!

This is ridiculous that we can't get any support from Apple for their buggy software.  My music is still all messed up and Apple refuses to help.

  • ITunes playback through firewire to ordinary TV

Is there a way of playing back Quicktime files from the itunes playlist to a PAL television using firewire/camcorder interface to an ordinary PAL television (notHD) which has composite video in)? I see there is a piece of software called 'simplyvideoout' but that only plays back one selected Quicktime file at a time through firewire/camcorder.

If I bypass iTunes altogether and play the file with Quicktime, it plays fine, so the file is not corrupt. Any ideas?
check if you have read & write permissions for your music folder. in finder, right-click on it and +get info+. unlock the little padlock (you may have to enter your admin password) and change the permission settings. next, click on the little gear-shaped icon and +apply to enclosed items+ like so
you may also give everyone read & write access.
the important part is to *apply to enclosed items* !
