C Drive filling up due to songs, D is empty, can I move Itunes to D safely?

As I've been putting my songs into Itunes I keep getting error messages from Windows that my C Drive is getting too full - however my D Drive is virtually empty. Is it okay to just move my whole Itunes folder to D? I was going to and got a message from Windows saying that it could affect the way the program worked.

Yes, you can. To help make sure you have no problems during or after the move, I'd suggest you read the following instructions:
MacMuse: Move iTunes music/Library to new drive
Hope this helps.

  • How can I move itunes songs to my file-server

    Hi
First some background: I have 3 computers, 1 hp laptop, 1 hp wokstation, 1 Win2003 server. I have all my mp3's on a shared drive on the server.
My question: How can i move all my iTune songs to the server, so i can play them on both computers?
I have tryed to move them in windows but with on luck, I have iTunes installed on the laptop and workstation. but would like to buy on the laptop and listen to the songs on my workstation.

  • How can I move iTunes music folder to another drive?

I have iTunes version 7.1 running on a notebook with Windows Vista. My iTunes music folder is becoming too large for the C; drive and I am having problems successfully moving it to the D: drive.
I know the folder is in the D: drive because I can see it there. I have followed guidance on how to link it to iTunes: Edit / Preferences / Advanced / General / Change (choosing iTunes music folder on the D: drive) / OK. I have also ticked the "Keep iTunes Music folder organised" box, as well as the "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library" box. Nevertheless, when I open iTunes my music does not appear in the library.
    What am I doing wrong?

Firstly there is more than one kind of iTunes Library file:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93732
Secondly you should consolidate your library:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iTunesMac/7.3/en/670x.html
The following link will give you the instructions to move iTunes to an EHD. These instructions need to be followed EXACTLY.
The 2 metadata files within the main iTunes folder must stay on the main drive of your system as that is their "home", they can't be moved.
    Now read this:

  • Can i move itunes to another drive other than my c drive?

I use a smallish SSD drive for my os and a couple games, i was curious if there is away to move  itunes from the C drive to a Bigger storage drive and still be able to fully use it.  Just need more space for Itunes and it contents.
thanks for any help on the subject.

Niel's advice above will work better. Moving the entire library as unit and then connecting to it works, and makes the next move easy too. Moving the media alone and then editing the media folder location in preferences doesn't work reliably, and may leave the library with broken connections to the old paths that need to be repaired.
@Rockdwg: If you have any iOS devices you may also want to relocate the backup folder.

  • Itunes and proxy settings. Itunes keeps the proxy setting from IE and I can't adapt it due to company policy. How can I force itunes to use firefox?

itunes can not connect to server and I can't find its proxy settings.
So I think it uses these from IE and those are blocked by company policy.
So, how can I force itunes to use the firefox settings

I fixed this issue (with help from tech support) and it involved several things.
After adding a song to iTunes, right-click on the song in iTunes and select "Update iTunes Match."
OR go to the iTunes menu-->Store-->Update iTunes Match.
Maybe that's the reason, it just hadn't updated to the cloud.
OR maybe it's not a high-enough bitrate file.   This happens to me because most of my tunes are home-recorded.
Sometimes converting to .mp3 or Create AAC version might work. (You do this with a right-click in iTunes, and then you will want to remove the original file from iTunes.)
There is an iTunes Preferences setting, under General Preferences called Import Settings.  Try setting it to AAC Encoder and iTunes Plus.   That (I think) causes imports to be slightly better quality.
Good luck!  The tech support person at Apple is requesting that a knowlege-base article be written about this.

  • Can I move Itunes from a pc based external hard drive on to a Time Capsule linked to Macbook Air? Is Timecapsule a good backup option for a 'silver surfer'?

I have a Macbook Air, iPod and old pc with external hard drive. My iTunes is on the pc which I sync with my iPod. I am thinking of buying a Timecapsule for backing up Macbook. At the  sametime would it make sense/be easy to move iTunes library on to new Timecapsule and access it from Macbook?  Or would I have to store the iTunes library on Macbook internal drive? (pc is getting old and will eventually be binned).  Thanks in advance

you could do that - or you could employ a pair of *powerline adapters* _*such as these*_.
either way, as William pointed out, it will boost syncing speed and improve reliability.
Or can I attached an external hard drive to the time capsule, set it us as a network drive and then set that drive in the iTunes preferences as where to where its media folder is?
yes. my test iTunes library lives on an external HD hanging off my TC and, using a hardwired connection, data transfer speeds are more than sufficient for what you intend to do.
in fact, i would recommend the external drive connected to the TC over using the TC itself. one reason is that you will not be able to backup what is on the TC's drive using time machine. also, if the TC croaks and needs to be replaced, it will be difficult to retrieve the data from it.
an external HD, otoh, could be connected to you Mac periodically and backed up to another external HD using free apps such as _*Carbon Copy Cloner*_.

  • Can't move iTunes to new hard drive.

I have installed a new C:\ Hard drive and I am trying to move itunes from my old hard drive to the new.
I have followed the tutorial telling me to just install iTunes on the new hard drive and then move the new itunes folder to the desktop and drag and drop my old itunes folder from the old hard drive (which is still connected) to the new iTunes music folder.  But when I open iTunes nothing is there!  The folder is there in the Music directory and I can see that the folder size is exactly like the real one and clicking on it in Explorer shows all my files, but again, when I start iTunes nothing show up!
    Plz HELP!

    Close iTunes.
Copy the entire iTunes folder from the old computer to the new computer.
Hold Shift and launch iTunes.  A window will open giving you the option to choose a current library or create a new one.
Point iTunes to the correct library file.
Going forward, simply launch iTunes as normal.

  • SSD drive filling up due to video rendering?

Hi. Apologies for what will no doubt be a stupid question but I'm not as computer savvy as many of you here.
Basically I film ice hockey games for my local team and produce weekly highlights for YouTube. I edit the footage using Premier Pro CC and then import that project into After Effects CC to add in the the few effects. I then render by using Adobe Media Encoder.
All of these filed are saved on my hard drive (D:) however I notice that after the process my SSD drive (C:) is rapidly filling up and I can't see why. I have Windows 8 and my C: Drive user folder is filled with 100+GB yet when I open the folder and add up the total of its contents it comes to little more than 16GB. I feel sure it's linked to the video editing unless it's a sheer coincidence that I noticed it only after making each set of highlights. Presumably some kind of temporary files folder that I can't locate?
Anyone with any suggestions I'd be grateful. I'm sure I'm missing something obvious here.
    Ta very much.

Drive C space http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1007934?tstart=0 see reply 4 for the setting that you need to manually change... and then delete any old temp files
-In Edit >Preferences > Media I changed this location to the D:\ drive as well

  • HT1751 How can I move iTunes Music from one drive to another?

I'm having trouble ... hoping someone can help.
    Windows XP Pro.
My MP3s were on a networked Data Drive (Z:).  I drag the songs I want on iTunes from there to the iTunes program, and it's library
    was in the "normal" place (\Documents and Settings\MyName\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music ).
I copied my iTunes library folder onto an external drive and also copied the Z drive MP3s onto the external drive. I then put the MP3s
on a new computer with Windows XP Pro, downloaded the latest version of iTunes on the new computer, and then drug the iTunes
folder from the external drive onto the new computer in the exact same "normal" place as above.
When I open iTunes, my music is not there for some reason.  Is there any way to correct this sort of readding all my music and all
    my cover art?
    Thank you.

    Thank you for the response.
I cannot find the file   iTunes Library.itl   ...
I have the structure you mention:
<User's Music>\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl where <User's Music> is the music folder of the profile as defined by the operating system.
but that file is not there (I looked in the preferences of iTunes in order to find the location and that is the location it stated).
"iTunes can be connected to a library in a different location by holding down shift as you start it and clicking Choose from the options to Choose or Create a library."
I can do this, but again, there is no .itl file that I can find ... now I'm more confused         Of course, if I fire up my old computer, there is no drive Z any longer, so while all my music appears on iTunes, I cannot click on any as it then will not be able to find the song on the drive that no longer exists.
I am going to do a search on the old computer for that .itl file to see if it was just in some other place for some reason.

  • Can't move iTunes library onto external drive?

I am trying to clear some space of my MacBook Pro's internal hard drive by moving my iTunes library onto an Mac-formatted external drive. I have followed to the letter the instructions of the Apple document (setting external HD as location of new iTunes library, then selecting Advanced/Consolidate Library).
The process continued for a bit before it crashed and said, "Copying Music failed. The disk could not be read from or written to."
I had noticed that the error occurred when trying to copy a file that had the "#" symbol in its name. Typically, that character is only a problem with Windows, and I both disks are Mac OS. Nevertheless, I found that the song file in question was a duplicate, so I deleted it and tried again. This time, I got the error message right away!
I have installed all updates, repaired permissions, and can see no reason for this to happen. I have Googled the error message and found a lot of references to this happening when copying to an iPod, but I am moving my library to an external HD.
Please help! My internal HD is running out of space!

That was it! Thanks! During the straight-up copy of the iTunes Music folder, the operation crashed because "some data could not be read or written." Had the iTunes error message been similar, I would have known that was the case.
Currently, I am running an additional copy of the library using the ditto terminal commmand, so I can see a list of all the corrupt song files. So far about 15.
    Thanks again!!!!

  • How should i save a mp3 song so that i can add to itune library? i keep coping to library but its not showing up

how to save mp3 song and then transfer to itune library? i keep coping to library but its not showing up

Download it to your computer and make sure you know where the file is.
Right-click the file, choose Properties and look at the General tab. Make sure the "Type of file" is "MPEG Layer 3 audio file" and that the "Size" is at least several MB.
    Are we good so far?
If so, find your Automatically Add to iTunes folder (which is inside the iTunes Media folder) and drag your MP3 into it.

  • How do you move or can I move Itune folders (Movies), (TV Shows) and (Home Videos) to other internal hard drives (running out of space) on my computer's main hard drive and have Itunes recongize where they are?

I built my own computer which has 4 internal hard drives with 3 internal hard drives that are 3tb.  With my movies and tv shows, I need to know if I can move the Itunes folders (Movies, TV shows and Home Video's) and move each one of them to 3 seperate internal hard drives while Itunes can still find them to play with my apple tv.  Does anyone know how I can do it?

While you can do that, it is not a feature of iTunes.  Put your movies on the external drive, then add them to iTunes by dragging the files to iTunes while holding the option (alt) key down so it leaves the files where they are located.  There are other ways to move them if they are already added but they can be more involved and tricky.  If it's just one or two try:  http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=relocateselected

  • Can't Move iTunes Library to an external Drive using instructions given

    Hi Guys.
I want to move my library to an external drive. However when I click Edit, then Preferences, then Advanced, as per the instructions, there is no inner tabs that give me the option of clicking on General as illustrated in the instructions and I can't proceed. What am I doing wrong? How do I move the library permanently to the external drive to make room on my computer?
Many thanks in advance to anyone who can help!
    Keith

Thanks for clarifying that there have in fact been changes to the Advanced tab. That's what threw me. I've successfully transferred the library to the F drive and all is well!!
It's only a small thing, but I'm just wondering what method I should use to transfer the remaining folders which didn't transfer with the full library.
I have basically just followed the instructions, excluding the going into the General menu of the Advanced tab. I selected the new location, which came up as the new location for the library in the window of the advanced tab. I clicked OK and then Consolidated the library.
    Many thanks,
    K.

  • Can't move iTunes to External Drive

    Hi there,
    Weird one...
Using a MacBook Pro 2.5Ghz Intel Core i5, running 10.8.5 copying on to a brand new Lacie external drive connected via lightning. Whenever I try to copy the itunes folder it stalls at different points, sometimes with (error code -36).
The iTunes folder is <150GB and the external drive is 1TB. I have repaired permissions, re-formatted the external drive, but simply cannot get this function happening.
Any tips would be most welcome!

Error -36 is an I/O error. Does your LaCie have mutliple connections available? I used to have one that was USB, FW400 and FW800. I usually ran it on FW400 but occasionally I'd have to switch it to USB to move large groups of files, for this same reason. It wasn't the drive but the FW400 bus on my MacBook.

  • Can i move my songs onto memory stick and then back after work on computer is finished

can i move itunes library onto a memory stick while work is being done on computer and then return them after, thanks

Sure... you can backup your data to a memory stick, a USB drive, a NAS, or any other backup source you like.
But do not simply move the songs, grab the ENTIRE iTunes folder so that the iTunesLibrary.itl file is captured as well.  Without that file, you essentially start over with playlist, playcounts, and library layout.
