  • Brand New 27" iMac i5 will not boot after installing software updates

I just purchased my new iMac 2 nights ago. I have been getting it setup with my apps, mobile me account, etc, and luckily just setup time machine and let it do a full backup.
I just ran Software Update for the first time, and now the machine will not boot. It hangs on the grey screen for about 1 minute before the Apple logo comes up. About 30 seconds after the Apple logo comes up, the grey spinning gear shows up, and about 1 minute after that I get the grey screen of death (You must restart your computer).
Any suggestions? A little frustrated here....

If you mean did I receive error messages, No, I didn't. However, the desktop reverted to the default purple night-sky looking thing, my applications and such all disappeared from the dock, and I couldn't open any files or folders (you don't have permission to ...), etc. I tried signing out and back in, rebooting, using a second admin account on the computer, creating a new admin account, etc. I ran Disk Utility, hardware checker, etc. No errors were found, and nothing changed. I could see all my files and folders, but they had a small red circle in the corner, indicating "locked" or "no permission".
I'll find the lines from the console log if that will help. The error showed up immediately and is in the computer's attempt to access the user/library/application support/sync services and same path to user/library/logs/sync services/log. (or something reasonably close to this. If you can use the exact path, I will get it) The link between my settings and files, and a password is apparently corrupted or something, so that the computer won't even let me change the desktop or any file, so I can't save, edit or discard anything, and can't drag files to another computer on the home network.
At least I'm still under the 90 day warranty, so I can call tomorrow. At this point, the SMART check says the drive is good, so I assume it's software. The only things new are the three auto Apple software updates I installed yesterday, so I immediately suspect them. But who knows?
Does this help you at all?

  • Satelite P300 does not boot after failed Bios update

    Hi everyone,
I have tried to update the bios of a P300 using this :
    18/03/10
    BIOS Update
    Toshiba Windows 7 - 32 Bit 4.20-WIN32 World Wide
Which I downloaded from here: http://uk.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/download_drivers_bios.jsp?service=UK after entering my laptops specifications.
The flash process hanged during the update and the laptop became unbootable, blank screen when powering on and nothing else...
I tried using the Phoenix Emergency Crisis application, created a floppy disk with the Bios image file that I have earlier downloaded but managed nothing.
The USB floppy driver access the floppy when entering the recovery mode, I hear some beeps that indicate that a process takes places, but when everything stops and reboot...the problem remains.
-Has anyone got a clue what to do next?
-Is the warranty void after a bios update attempt?
    Thank you for yor time.

    Hi buddy,
You should check the forum content or with other words, use the forum search firstly before you ask something. Failed BIOS update is not unusual and can happen always. The forum contains already a lot threads about this and the only solution is contacting an ASP. The guys have professional tools to recover it.

  • Tiger does not start after failed software update

    Hi,
I ran software update, to install updates for Tiger, 10.4.6. I got a prompt to shut the laptop down, and follow the instructions on startup of the laptop. I pressed the shut down button, I was then told by the instructions to hold down the power button until the white sleep indicator flashes, and the bar travels across the screen. I accidentally let go of the power button and it shut down halfway through the update (I cannot remember what the update was).
Now, when I press the power button, the screen stays blank (no flash or anything), no sounds are produced, but the sleep indicator stays at half brightness, until I force shut down the laptop again (holding down the power button).
How can I get this laptop to start up again normally?
    Thanks,
    George.

    Hi George,
This sounds like a firmware update. Apple has a firmware restoration CD that you can make. What you do is download a disc image of the CD, burn it in another Mac, and then run it on your computer that's not working. The directions are kind of involved, so you might need to print them.
Also, pay special attention on the firmware download page to the section where it tells you which computers it's good for. I've linked to version 1.7, but there are other versions available, too, depending on which computer you have.

  • Unable to access Ipad mini after failed software update

Can't access my Ipad mini after a failed software update. All I get is a black screen and a note to plug in my device in order to update itunes. The update failed and I am unable to get back in. I have rebooted a couple of times - no luck. Is there any way to bypass the update and get back in?  Any ideas, Please?

The message telling you to plug into iTunes cannot be bypassed. That is not a message telling you to update iTunes. It is telling you to plug into iTunes on your computer.
You absolutely must restore the iOS a software or you will never get back into your iPad. You have to restore using iTunes on a computer.
Use iTunes to restore your iOS device to factory settings
However, you will most likely need to use Recovery Mode now.
If you can't update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

WHAT??? Now that's a disappointment! I was sure the all-seeing, all-knowing Prof. Kappy would instantly discover the problem thru time and space....
Ok, back to the issue at hand, the Prof. is right. In none of the OP's participation, nor in any of his choir of followers save mommy power is there the least hint of what Apple product is failing. While y'all get a move on and disgorge the details, may want to try a Safe Boot. Hold down the Shift key prior to the startup chime and wait awhile. IF it starts, then it means you have some third-party software that's causing the problem. Else there's a strong probability a complete reinstall will occur in your near future.
In the future and in spite of what some purists may say, be sure to service the system disk BEFORE patching. By "service" I mean booting up the Mac using your Install DVD (Snow Leopard or priors) or booting in Recovery Mode (Command R, in the Lions and successors), running the Disk Utility found in that mode and doing a Repair Disk and Repair Disk Permissions. Until NO errors show up. Cause patching up an already damaged system will only make things worse.

  • IMac won't boot into OS X after failed software update

I've got a 400MHz G3 iMac here, running 10.4.8. I finally got it connected to our network and ran Software Update, and it downloaded the 10.4.11 update. A few of the other updates installed successfully (iTunes phone driver, Java updates, etc.) but I got an error on the 10.4.11 combined update installation. Rebooted to finish installing the other updates thinking I'd try the 10.4.11 update on its own, and now the iMac refuses to get past the "Welcome to OS X" screen (I get the window with the Apple logo and the progress bar, but the progress bar never moves, even after several minutes). Tried safe boot with no luck.
There are no peripherals connected except the Apple keyboard/mouse (which are connected via a USB extension cable), so I can rule those out. Basically I'm wondering what steps I can take before I have to dig out my Tiger disc and mess around with Disk Utility...
    Thanks in advance!

    Preexisting corruption is my guess.
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions. (Well, the Installer actually uses superuser Permissions to do it's work, but after reboot it doesn't guarantee communication with other existing needed files Permissions.)
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates.
May even need to do an Archive and Install if you have room on the HD, but saves all your files and gives a new OS...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
I only use Software Update to see what is needed, then get them for real via...
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
That way I can wait a week or so, check the forums for potential problems, and get Permissions & such in order before installing.
If all the above fails, then it appears to be time for a relatively painless Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space and no Disk corruption, and is relatively quick & painless...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
Just be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings.

  • Problems booting up after failed software update

    Hi all...
I have an iBook G4 running 10.4.9. I just ran a software update, and a few things like itunes and iphoto updated fine, but the update to 10.4.11 failed. I restarted figuring I'd just try the failed update again after the reboot, but now it won't boot.
It goes past the grey screen, to the blue one with the window that shows the apple logo and "Mac OS_X" with a progress bar underneath.
The progress bar just sits there, and won't advance at all.
I'm just not sure what to do at this point... if the update failed halfway through and theres something messed up, or what... I'm not sure. Any ideas?

    Please pardon the intrusion…

  • Hi there can anyone help as i am unable to contact Apple for support with my printer which will not print after recent software update? this is the email i tried to send to apple with no success, can anyone help please.......Dear Apple, I'm pulling my hai

    Hi there,
Can anyone out there help, after a recent Apple software update my Epson Stylus Photo RX640 will no longer print, every other aspect of the printer works fine including the scanner but it just will not print, I sent an email to apple but all i got was an automated reply directing me to their support page, the email i sent is below this explains in full what the problem is & what i have done to try & fix this problem.
    Dear Apple,
I'm pulling my hair out after a recent software update from apple, since this update my Epson Stylus Photo RX640 will not print, every other function of the printer including the scanner works fine,
Please see attached file of the error message coming up in the print queue.
I have spent days trying to fix this, i have been onto Epsons website & followed their resolution for this error message to no avail, after contacting them again with the results i got an email back saying : In response to your email, the RX640 will use an inbox or gutenprint driver on Mac OS X 10.6.8, it is not compatible with an Epson driver.
I have also tried re-installing drivers from original Discs for the printer but it still will not print, obviously this error has been caused by Apple's latest software update, when are Apple going to fix this problem? i need my printer working ASAP.
    Regards
    Brian
PS i obviously can't attach the error message so here it is:    Error:/Library/Printer/Epson/inkjetprinter 2/filter/rastertoescpll.app/contents/mac os/rastertoescpll/failed
    Thank You all in advance
    Regards
    Brian

It is hardly Apple's fault that Epson can't/won't update their driver, but at least Epson suggest that you use the Gutenprint driver, which in any case is far better that what Epson offer.
    You can get it here:
    http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/
You can download the latest version from here:
    http://sourceforge.net/projects/gimp-print/
Have you downloaded the recent Apple update to Epson drivers?

  • Hard Drive Corrupt After Failed Software Update

    Hi everyone,
I have an iBook that was recently down for about a month due to a failing DC in board. After replacing the board and restarting, I had a month worth of updates in software update. I installed the two that didn't require a restart -- I think they were the latest iTunes and Quicktime updates. Something went wrong in the middle of the install and after waiting with the OS locked and the hard drive spinning for a couple hours I finally did a hard restart.
Now upon startup I get to the grey Apple logo and the indicator spins while the hard drive goes back and forth between clicking and spinning. Apple Hardware Test says everything's fine, Disk First Aid gets to "Checking Catalog file" and then errors out:
    Invalid key length
    Volume check failed
I'm wondering what my best option is to restore the disk since I know my actual data is still there. Also, I haven't tried using target disk mode for anything -- is that worth a try? Thanks.

    Matt:
"Invalid key length" is a directory error which cannot be repaired by Disk Utility. You will need to use a utility like Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior. Otherwise, you will need to reformat, erase and reinstall. If you do not have your data backed up you can try using Firewire Target Disk Mode with the assistance of a second firewire Mac.

  • Can't get past gray start up screen after failed software update

    Uh-oh. I think I'm in trouble now.
This afternoon I was trying to do a software update on my iBook. After about an hour and a half, there hadn't been any progress, so I figured it had frozen, and forced it to quit. When I tried to start it back up again, it comes up to the gray start up screen, and then just sits there and spins. Here's what I've tried so far:
Safe mode- doesn't work, just sits at gray screen
Using option key- shows my HD, I select it, sits at gray screen
Using OSX installer disk- I'm able to get to disc utility this way. SMART status says verified, ran repair disk and it found no errors. Tried to run repair permissions and it just sat there for about 3 hours with the bar spinning blue and white, but not actually filling up. It wouldn't allow me to stop repair permissions, so I had to force it to stop. I thought about reinstalling, but I don't have enough space on my HD.
So, that's where I am at this point. Now I find out how I've managed to mess things up so completely, and cross my fingers that someone will please, please, please have an answer. Thanks!

I tried to backup my iBook HD using target disc mode, but it wouldn't work. The target computer (G4 running 10.4) would come up to the blue screen with the FireWire logo bouncing around, and would go no further.
I think the problem there is that you need to boot the iBook with the T key held down, not the G4(10.4). What this does is mounts your iBook's drive on the G4. The bouncing FireWire logo should be on your iBook, not your G4. This means that you connect the two machines, hold down the T key on the problem computer to mount the volumes onto the working computer.
There shouldn't be a compatibility problem because it mounts it as an external hard drive (not necessarily a boot volume.)
Will the disc come out of the iBook when there is no longer a FireWire cable connecting to both computers?
    Let me know...

  • Mac Mini OS Won't After Failed Software Update

I selected to update to the latest iTunes, QuickTime, and OS-X updates. Both QuickTime and OS-X failed to update completely. I then reselected to update QuckTime again and it updated successfully and promted to restart the Mac, which I did.
Upon restarting, the Mac would boot into the OS. It just freezes at the OS X screen. I followed the step in the User's Guide to start by holding down the "option" key and power button. It started into screen with the HD, return, and right arrown icon. The HD icon shows the drive and a red "x" at the corner.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

I tried the Disk Utility first. It found a Bit Map error and did a self-repair. The status was "disk repaired successfully". So somehow the failed update corrupted something. However, in the end, the OS still wouldn't start.
Then I reinstalled the Mac OS 10.4.2 system and archived the old system. All user accounts and software appeared to be preserved. I have yet to check everything. Next I ran the software update again. It found about 7 required updates, including QuickTime 7.1.5 and Mac OS X Update Combine (PowerPC) 10.4.9. Again QuickTime an d Mac OS X failed to update. I did not force it to update the second time.
    Questions:
Is it okay to remove the folder "Previous System" at this point?
What to do with those 2 failed updates?
    Thanks

  • Bluescreen after failed software update-2nd int HD disappeared

    hi
i started software-updater on my macpro. updater was hanging for 10 minutes, so i quitted the application. after that, no other programm would start, no reaction at all, even not jumping in dock, unable to shut down the computer the normal way. i did a hard shutdown. after that, i was faced the first time in my live with the bluescreen, no progression...
Booted with installation disc, repaired permission, checked drive with diskwarrior - did not help.
also, my 2nd internal disc with a clone system does not show up, neither in disc utility nor diskwarrior...
luckily i have a 3rd, external system (10.5.6), from where i can boot. there the systemprofiler (options, S-ata), says: not able to read s-ata configuration due to a problem...
i didn't change any hardware, nor was i adding other external equippment.
the problem occured after i used sofware-updater to check for new versions.
    i'm stuck.
    any help welcome.
    cheers christian

I Would try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk.
You could have some directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Utility reports and if DU was able to repair them.
    Then Repair Permissions.
I know this is basic stuff but it may help. I have had no issues using Software Update on all three of my Macs. I do keep them highly maintained though.

Hi, My laptop wanted to do a update of the Lenovo software so I let it.
Now every boot up it comes up with two error windows.
    DLL error's
How to get rid of this please?

Doing the first thing helped with the error messages a little bit. Also, editing the WPA networks allowed me to enter the passwords, which also helped a little with connecting when it wakes from sleep. I just ran software update again yesterday, and Apple now has an Airport Extreme update that addresses compatibility issues with WPA and WPA2 protected networks. However, I still had to reboot my router this morning to connect to the internet. Network diagnostics says that its connected to the network but may not be connected to the internet because it has a self-assigned IP address, and this most often occurs after a long period of being turned off or away from the home network connecting just fine on open networks.
The second thing, Applejack, sounds like a nice tool, but I'd prefer that this thing work the way it's supposed to, especially since it's only a few months old. Glad I bought Applecare.

Boot your computer from the install DVD, insert the DVD and shutdown the computer. Boot up while holding down the C key. Just before the install sequence you will see options in the menubar, select utilites, go to disk utility, select your target disk, verify and repair disk. You might want to verify and repair disk permissions as well. To answer your question it's not a virus as there are no viruses for MacOSX. It could be the updates did not install properly. Try that and follow with a post to let us know if that worked for you. What software update were you running when this happened?
