C2960s ethernet management port

Hi,
Can the ethernet management port on a 2960s be used to source syslog, snmp traps, ntp updates... ?
this is not mentioned in the software configuration guide (http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/lan/catalyst2960/software/release/12.2_55_se/configuration/guide/swint.html#wp2220949) and what worries is the instability warning in the bottom..
thanks,
bart

hi Bart,
The Ethernet management port supports these features:   <<< from the documentation...
•Express Setup (only in switch stacks)
•Network Assistant
•Telnet with passwords
•TFTP
•Secure Shell (SSH)
•DHCP-based autoconfiguration
•SMNP (only the ENTITY-MIB and the IF-MIB)
•IP ping
•Interface features
–Speed—10 Mb/s, 100 Mb/s, and autonegotiation
–Duplex mode—Full, half, and autonegotiation
–Loopback detection
•Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP)
•DHCP relay agent
•IPv4 and IPv6 access control lists (ACLs)

  • Advantages of 10/100 Management port on 6500/4500 series

    Hi mates,
There is a common port called "10/100 MGT" (next to console port) on the supervisor engines of 6500 and 4500 series switch.
Why would I need that port since I can telnet through Layer2 10/100 ports??
Is that port doing the same job as console port? in addition allows longer distances over cat 5 cables??
Do we need to assign IP address on that mangement port?
    Thanks for helping :)

    Hi,
The 6500 supervisors do not have a 10/100 MGT port. The cat4000 supervisors do, however.
On the supI and supII, the Ethernet management ports are for network management only. These ports do not support network switching. See:
    http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/lan/cat4000/inst_gd/05modins.htm#xtocid184774
On the SupII+, SupIII, and higher, the Ethernet management port is used (in ROMMON mode only) to recover a switch software image that has been corrupted or destroyed due to a network catastrophe. This port is not active while the switch is operating normally.
    See:

  • Unable to set CSS management port to 100Mbits-FD.

This is the first time I've encountered this problem. Thanks in advance!
    CSS 11501 running code 7.30.1.06.
Below is the error I receive:
    ARLTRKBAXPS1001(config-if[Ethernet-Mgmt])# phy 100Mbits-FD
    ^
%% Command is not available on Cirrus Logic Ethernet-Mgmt port.

    this is normal.
As indicated by the message, the CSS11501 does not support this setting on the ethernet management port.
Only possible to us 10Mb either full or half duplex.

  • CSS11506 Ethernet Management from remote subnet?

Despite entering the correct 'gateway address' in the 'boot' config I can't get any of our 11506s to respond to telnet or web management connections to the ethernet management port from remote subnets (in subnet works). I'm aware this wasn't possible previously, but assumed that since specifying a gateway was now an option that this would work.
Can anyone shed any light on this please?
    Ben

as indicated in the documentation, this command ('gateway') will only be used during the boot of the CSS.
This for software download from a remote ftp server during the boot.
Once the box is up and running, this command has no effect.
CSS version 6.10 for the CSS110xx and CSS11800 will soon have a new command to configure static route on the management interface that would work for what you need.
However, there is nothing scheduled yet for the 11500 series.

    Gilles.

  • Management port in Cisco Switches (are they really physical port)

    Hi all,
I have been taught to console into my cisco switch for configurations through console cable + putty (serial terminal).
Then I have been taught to configure a management ip and gateway on the cisco switch.
    Switch# conf t
    Switch(config)# interface vlan 1
    Switch(config-if)# ip address 192.168.1.11 255.255.255.0
    Switch(config-if)# no shut
    Switch(config-if)# exit
    Switch(config)# ip default-gateway 192.168.1.1
All the while, i thought this is the way to remote in to the switch via putty/telnet through the network to configure the switch, until i saw the picture below (cisco catalyst 2960)
    =======================================
There is a physical port call ethernet management port.  What is it ?   What is the difference between this port and the earlier example of setting a management ip in VLAN 1 ?
If i set an IP on this particular interface and I ssh in, will i see the same screen/display/console from the earlier example in which i set a management ip in VLAN1 and I ssh in ?

    Hi Leo,
Sorry if you find it hard to explain to me.
I have understood to think of the ethernet management port as a separate entity from the original switch.
Maybe with the help of the diagram below, can you let me know if i have understood correctly ?
*please assume connected port is a management port separated from the normal switch ports
q1) does the ethernet management port need to be connected to another switch ?
I have thought of it as a device on the network and it is mentioned by you previously that it will be connected to a switch
"he traffic goes up the cable connected to the Management port and up a switch.  Now that switch holds all the information because it is a switch.  "
q2) In the current setup then, terminal B will be able to access the management port - am i right ?
q3) you mentioned that the management port is not able to set any gateway, (which is the router fe0/5 - 192.168.0.3 in my illustration), in that case do you mean that terminal A will not be able to access the management port remotely and it can only be accessible locally ?
Please do correct me if my understanding is wrong.
Thank you so much for your advices.
    Regards,
    Noob

A console port is special for two reasons.  First, it's "known" to the system as its console port which means the system will send status information to it, and often treat it special when accepting input.  Second, the console port is generally wired as a serial port.  (It also normally doesn't have an IP address.)
The console port was intended for where the system operator controls the system from, usually nearby (physically).  (Console ports are/were used for any computer based system.)
Management ports are generally for remote management using an Ethernet port.  On older switches/routers, a device might be configured to use an ordinary Ethernet port for this purpose.  On newer switches/routers, a Ethernet port is provided for this purpose. For these, the device may actually use different hardware for port and might treat it internally differently.  For example, often the Ethernet management port is only FE, it may not have ASIC support for high speed switching, and it might be in it's own predefined VRF.  Generally, a management port will have an IP address, but different from  IP address spaces used by other hosts.
Out-of-the-box, a console port will allow you to configure the device, but a management port will often require some additional configuration.

  • I have more ethernet devices than my time capsule has ethernet output ports. What do I do?

I have more ethernet devices than my apple time capsule has ethernet output ports. What do I do?

Just to add to Bob's comment.. it is much better to move all the connections to the switch..
Don't leave two connections on the TC and then connection to the switch plus the rest.. plug everything into the switch. The only line running to the TC is to connect switch to TC.
The sweet spot for most people is 8 port switches which are now consumer items.. go into any big computer shop.. buy whatever brand you want.. they are not alot different.. but I have noticed smart switches are coming down in price.. to the point cheap end 8 port smart (managed sort of). are the price of dumb switches a year ago.. they also will have better controls and more details. ie discover what is using bandwidth in the network.. some basic QoS .. lots of stuff that Apple routers missed out on.
    eg d-link DGS-1100-08
I just bought one to replace my power hungry managed 16 port switch.. although I haven't unboxed it .. sometimes things don't work 100% on Macs but most have simple browser type access. Not all browsers work is my experience but something always does.

  • Can the Gigabit Ethernet LAN Port be used with a Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet adaptor and then to a Thunderbolt Hard Drive as a back up drive?

Can the Gigabit Ethernet LAN Port be used with a Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet adaptor and then to a Thunderbolt Hard Drive as a back up drive?

If you use ethernet to connect the two AirPort Extremes together, you'll have Gigabit speeds available at all of the ethernet ports on both routers.
If you connect the second AirPort Extreme using wireless only and configure the Extreme to "extend a wireless network", then the maximum speeds that the second router can attain will be limited to the capability of the wireless connection. So, if you connect at normal "n" wireless speeds of say 130 Mbps, that will be the maximum speed available at the ethernet ports on the second AirPort Extreme.
I think you can easily see the difference between Gigabit ethernet, which is 1000 Mbps compared to "n" wireless at 130 Mbps. Even if you can manage to connect at 5 GHz speeds for wireless, the max speed will be in the 300 Mbps range, more than 3 times slower than Gigabit ethernet. Normal "n" speeds will be about 7 times slower than ethernet.
For streaming high definition video and other demanding sources, you'll need as much bandwidth (speed) as you can get. Ethernet is always the best choice if you can possibly use it. And...there's no wireless interference on an ethernet connection.

  • Failed while creating virtual Ethernet switch. Failed to connect Ethernet switch port

    Hello Folks
I am completely stuck with the configuration of my virtual networks. I have one logical switch left to add to one of my Hyper-V 2012 R2 hosts when I started getting the error below when I try to add logical switches to either Hyper-V Host. I have been using
the document. 'Hybrid Cloud with NVGRE (Cloud OS)' to implement the virtual networking. Basically using the exact configuration that is in the document. I have added the PA Logical Network and the Network adapters and added the logical switch for it to my
hyper-v 2012 R2 host and everything was fine. I am now trying to add my ISCSI Logical Switch to the host and this is the error I get. My other Hyper-V host I get this error for any logical switch I am trying to add. Can someone help me with this error. I haven't
been able to find any information about it.
Also a some quick info on tracing an error like this so I can figure out what is causing it.
Thsi is my configuration so far
So as far as I know everything is peachy untill the error below. Dead stop now
    Error (12700)

notice your GUID?  you may want to consider ensuring that is the same GUID associated in your database.  Sometimes during data corruption theres a smidge of a chance your sql database kind of either pulls old guids esp if this was reverted to snapshot
without it being powered off etc.
I would try that first.  then i would consider if you get to configure that with your current liscense associated with the host.  I would need way more info to help any further

    Hi TomG101,
It seems that there is a configuration conflict on the virtual switch port .
Also I tested the command on my lab , it works .
For troubleshooting please  create a new virtual switch then try to configure again .
Any further information please feel free to let us know .

  • Half duplex or full duplex configuration for MDS9124 management port?

    Hi All,
Is it possible to set the management port of mds 9124 about half or full duplex configuration?
I want to correct following error:
Jun 13 10:27:20.799 GMT: %CDP-4-DUPLEX_MISMATCH: duplex mismatch discovered on GigabitEthernet4/18 (not half duplex), with mtw1pc02bs0(FOX1450G8QG) mgmt0 (half duplex).
it seems mds 9124 set his port to half duplex.
    Dennis

You may want to check this thread :
    https://supportforums.cisco.com/thread/2059109
    Else try the following :
    switch# config terminal
    switch(config)#
    switch(config)# interface mgmt0
    switch(config-if)# switchport duplex full
    switch(config)# exit
    switch#
    switch# copy running-config startup-config
Also, I would suggest you check what the counterpart of your MDS switch mgmt interface is set to (i.e. is it set to autoneg, then try setting it to fix speed/duplex or the other way around).
