C2960S switches reset SFP+ ports hourly

We have several C2960S switches that seem to reset their uplink SFP+ ports at the same time each hour. It looks like it's only a brief reset but any Cisco phones we have attached to these switches will lose their connectivity to our Subscriber and reset. Has anyone else seen this? We are running iOS 15.2(2a)E1 due to a different error we were having (%ENTROPY errors), and Cisco TAC recommended we upgrade to the latest code. I included a "sho log" to demonstrate what I'm talking about. The interface in question is Gi1/0/49 which has a GLC-T in it that uplinks to our Data Center switches.

I see you have 2960s, but there is know bug for the 2960-X series regarding GLC-T and other SFPs.
So, this maybe effecting your switch as well but not sure.

Is the Cisco side down/down? Does the Cisco recognize the module?
show interface x/x and show interface transceiver for the Cisco side would be good.

  • 2960x - stack cables connected while switches power on. SFP ports - status unknown

Connected 2960x uplink using SFP ports both stacks and all 4 ports worked good.
Remote tech connected last stack cable between first and last switch, in 2 different 2960x stacks of switches, while switches were  powered on. A longer stack cable was needed.  3 of 4 SFP ports did stopped communicating.
One stack SFP stayed up in switch 2, not master.  Completed reload - other SPF connected in switch 4/0/52
Second stack no connection on either SFP, remote tech power cycled switches.
After power cycle one SFP worked  in Master 1/0/52, other switches SFP ports show "unknown" when inserting SFP.
Configured port 48 on stack with issue and connected second uplink just fine.
Has anyone experienced this with the SFP's?

Looking for documentation on reccommending procedure for connecting stack cables while switches should be powered off or not.
    Thanks,

Opened Cisco TAC case.  the following bug was found.
the two different HBRN's below require 2 different IOS and they cannot be in same stack.

    From Cisco.
Developers have recommended to upgrade the IOS version of switches with a Hardware Board revision Number below 0x10 to the release 15.0(2.0).EX5ES. this is the one attached to this email and should be applied to switch 1 and 2.
For switches with a Hardware Board revision Number above 0x10 to the release 152-2.4.E1ES, which I will send you right away. This should be done on switch 3 and 4.
Now, If you  load the engineering special, you will  need to do a full power-cycle (physically unplug the power and plug it back in for every single switch). A simple ‘reload’ will not resolve this.
The same must be done on Switch-0. For this stack you will only need to load the image attached to this email since all the Hardware Board revision Numbers are lower than 0x10.
    done.

  • SG500X-24 Switch SFP ports

    Hi,
i have a question about the max number of sfp ports available on the SG500X-24 Switch. I need to configure a Stack with 2 SG500X-24 units: can i use 5G ports and have 4 SFP as network ports. In the quick start guide i read that i can use i couple for stack and only 1 couple of ports for standard network, while around Internet i read different. So my question is: can i use all the 6 SFP ports of the switches? 2 5G ports for stacking and 4 SFP ports for normal network operation ?
    Thank you,
    Roberto

Hi Rob, the switch has 4 10 gig ports. There is also 2 5 gig ports. The 5 gig ports are combo ports meaning you can use either xg3 and xg4 OR the 5g ports.

  • SFP Ports on 3560 Switches

    Hi All,
I have 3560G-24Ts-s, it contains 4 SFP based Ports, I would like to know:-
1- What does (SFP) stand for?
2- what does SFP based ports provide?
    thank you,

    HI
SFP stand for small form factor pluggables.
SFP ports are fiber interfaces u can compare them to GBICS.We can use them for connectivity between the switches as they are gigabit interfaces.

  • Uplink ports and actual sfp port in switches ( please help )

    Dear all,
I am reading around to see the differences between uplink ports and normal ethernet ports. It seems to be uplink port just reverse the rx,tx pins and remove the needs of using a crossover cable.
I have done a simple representation of using the below (normal ethernet ports)
    PC
    SWITCH
    ROUTER
    RX
    straight
    TX
    straight
    RX
    RX
    straight
    TX

    RX
    TX
    straight
    RX
    straight
    TX
    TX
    straight
    RX
    straight
    TX
I assumed that the SWITCH ethernet port pins are naturally arranged as opposite from the PC so that a straight cable can be used and the same applies to a router port.
Q1) Hence from PC to Router ethernet port, I will need a cross cable, am I right ?
    ============================================================
Then I chance upon this website http://duxcw.com/faq/network/uplink.htm which states "A PC can be connected to an uplink port with a crossover cable"
As per my assumption above, a router has normal ethernet ports and uplink ports (for connecting to the wan/modem), since the normal ethernet ports of a router are in the order of (RX,RX,TX,TX) as shown above, I assumed the uplink port is (TX,TX,RX,RX).
    PC
    ROUTER normal ethernet port
    PC
    ROUTER uplink port
    RX
    cross

    TX
    TX
    straight
    RX
    TX
    cross
    TX
    TX
    straight
    RX
Q2) So how can the PC connect to the Router's Uplink port using a crossover cable ? Shouldn't it be using straight cable instead if it is trying to connect to a router's uplink port ?
    ============================================================
Q3) Where connecting switches (switch 1 to swtich2) using uplink port, can I say that a straight cable will be connected to switch 1 uplink port on 1 end, and a normal ethernet port in switch 2 on another end ?
    SWITCH#1 ethernet port
    SWITCH#1 Uplink port

    ============================================================
Q4) What is the purpose of an SFP port in a switch ? is it use as an uplink port ? Where does it actually uplink/connect to ?
Q5) If i connect a switch Uplink port to another switch Uplink port, does it means that I have to use a crossover cable ? does SFP fiber come with "crossover" type too ?
    ============================================================
Q6) If an uplink port in a switch is use to connect to a router (can we?), do i need to use a crossover cable then ? since a normal switch ethernet port will use a straight cable to connect to a router port ? as shown below
    SWITCH

    SWITCH UPLINK

Q7) Last but not least, if a design connect two switches using SFP uplink ports on both side, what would be the main purpose ? to increase the amount of ports ?  Why not stack them then ?
Sorry for the lengthy post, will really appreciate if some gurus can shed some light on the above.
    Thanks a million.
    Regards,
    Noob

    Hi Noob,
On some kit like netgear hubs etc, you may find a little button or
slider switch which may be labelled MDI or MDI(X) this allows a
straight cable to be used between 2 Hubs or switches (Both DCEs).
Some Cisco switches/routers will allow you to do the same but in software
    interface fastethernet 1/0/1
    mdix auto
    ====================================
DTE devices like say your laptop PC NIC card has an MDI (Medium Dependant Interface).
Physically this wires out as ( For 10/100M):-
    RJ45 PIN
    1  -- TRANSMIT +ve
    2  -- TRANSMIT -ve
    3  -- RECEIVE +ve
    6  -- RECEIVE -ve
DCE devices like hubs & swiches have MDI-X (Medium Dependant Interface - Crossedover).
Physically this wires out as ( For 10/100M):-
    RJ45 PIN
    1  -- RECEIVE +ve
    2  -- RECEIVE -ve
    3  -- TRANSMIT +ve
    6  -- TRANSMIT -ve
So lets connect the device together with a STRAIGHT cable ( Function DTE to DCE)
    PC/NIC = DTE = MDI                                SWITCH = DCE = MDI(X)
    RJ45 PIN                                           RJ45 PIN
    1  -- TRANSMIT +ve -------------------------------- 1  -- RECEIVE +ve
    2  -- TRANSMIT -ve -------------------------------- 2  -- RECEIVE -ve
    3  -- RECEIVE +ve --------------------------------- 3  -- TRANSMIT +ve
    6  -- RECEIVE -ve --------------------------------- 6  -- TRANSMIT -ve
So we transmit from the DTE and receive on the DCE and vice versa (BINGO).
Remember Routers are regarded as DTEs
    =================================
So lets connect 2 switches  together with a CROSSOVER cable ( Function DCE to DCE)
    UPLINK to UPLINK
    SWITCH = DCE = MDI(X)                           SWITCH = DCE = MDI(X)
    RJ45 PIN                                           RJ45 PIN
    1  -- RECEIVE +ve -------------------------------- 3  -- TRANSMIT +ve
    2  -- RECEIVE -ve --------------------------------- 6  -- TRANSMIT -ve
    3  -- TRANSMIT +ve ------------------------------ 1  -- RECEIVE +ve
    6  -- TRANSMIT -ve ------------------------------- 2  -- RECEIVE -ve
So we transmit from the DCE and receive on the DCE and vice versa (BINGO).

  • Linking C2960s switches through Fiber optic patch panel.

Hi, I have C2960s switches. I have to interconnect the switches through Fiber optic patch panel. Let me know which is the type of the connector used in the SFP ports.

There are a types of connectors that you need to consider:
    1. Switch to Fiber Patch Panel
    2. Fiber patch panel to Fiber patch panel
However, typically SFPs have LC type connection. With regards to Fiber Patch panel, typically (in my experience) SC type connection is used.
I have attached screenshots of the connectors as well :)
Don't forget to rate or mark as correct! :)

  • SFP Port Disabled?

Hi I have a link between:
    Switch A (3750G PS48)
    and
    Switch B (2 stacked 3750G TS24)
These are connected via fiber through their SFP ports using the SFP GLC-SX-MM tranceivers.
On Switch A, one of the SFP ports (poort 50) indicates that it is disabled from the Cisco Device Manager web page and it is showing an amber light.
On switch B, both SFP ports have green LEDs.
Any ideas on how to enable this port?

Not able to do a show interface "port" for ports 49 and 50 (dont know why). Is it because these are SFP ports?

  • Link Fail Alarm - SFP Ports

    Hello,
I have been trying to configure the Link Fail Alarm on SFP ports for a Cisco CGS2520 (Cisco CGS-2520-16S-8PC).
    SFP: GLC-FE-100FX-RGD (10-2360-02).
I can create a new Alarm Profile and attach it to the Ports that I want to monitor. The update Profile can then be saved to the startup-config and the configuration can be viewed as being correct.
If I then pull a fibre cable the Alarm is generated as expected.
However when I reboot the Switch the Alarm Profile is still within the configuration but it is no longer attached to the ports (i.e. the Alarm Profile configuration is shown on the startup-config however the running-config does not contain the alarm profile on the SFP port). Therefore when the Fibre Cable is removed no alarm is generated.
I have run through the procedure as defined in Chapter 7 of the Cisco CGS2520 Configuration Guide and as stated above copied the running-config to the startup-config.
Is anyone able to advise why the port attachment is lost when the switch is restarted – the Alarm Profile is retained.
    Thank you,

  • Configuring a 5508 via the SFP ports

Is there anyway to configure a 5508 via the SFP ports?  Or do you have to use the service port for autoinstall or NCS auto provisioning?  It looks like it grabs a DHCP address but it doesn't seem to like telnet, ssh ,http or https.  There isn't anyone onsite.

Thanks,  I got it figured out.  The 5508 was plugged up to a switch that was configured for lag (for the 5508 that was hooked up before).  I changed the port channel to put the native vlan on one that hands out DHCP.  The blank 5508 grabbed an ip but wasn't working.  I ended up disabling the other ports connecting to the 5508.  I defaulted the switchport that was connected to the 5508's SFP port 1 and put it in the right access vlan.  I was then able to ping the IP it grabbed and http in to it.
    thanks though!

  • 20gbit Port-channels using sfp+ ports

    Hi,
I am hoping to implement a cost affective solution that can utilise the uplinks ports on the 2960-X & XR series switch and the appropriate up/downlink modules for the 3750-X series switch
Would anyone know if it is possible to bundle the 10gbit sfp+ ports into a 20gbit port-channel?
Has anyone done this or could they point me in the right direction for documentation?
    Thanks

  • SFP ports and Giga ports

    Hi all,
I am designing a network where fiber will have a key role and I am wondering what is the max throughput of a SFP port (1000BaseSX), and why would I go for that kind of port rather than a normal Giga port...
I have been looking around for documents and papers but nothing so far.
    Thanks to help

Maximum throughput is based entirely on your appliance.

  • SFP ports

    Hi ,
Could any one please tell me abt small form-factor pluggable (SFP) ports
? what exaclty is its function ?
    regards
    Neo

I think they come in different speeds. The ones I recently got were gig copper sfps. I think its main goal is to allow for fiber or copper at different speeds. say you dont want to spend the money on a totally gig switch, as they are more expensive, well you can get a 10/100 switch with 4 sfp ports in which you can place gig sfp modules to uplink over your existing copper links.
