C2D Display issues fixed with new Logic board. READ before this is deleted!
While searching on Google for answers regarding logic board problems, I found an interesting MacFixIt article. Unfortunately I'm not sure how many of you read it because I could only access it now through Googles cache.
From the article:
We continue to report on an issue where their MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo (Late 2006) displays flicker or suffer from appearance of horizontal distortion lines. This issue is reminiscent of a problem that plagued some iBook G4s, generally resolved by logic board replacement.
It now appears that Apple is replacing specific parts to remedy this issue, though a parts shortage problem may be causing delays. It also appears that this issue is not directly related to any defect in the display, as that is not the part being replaced in most cases. Instead, the logic board seems to be implicated.
I hope this may be of some assistance to those of you suffering screen problems.
As to this post being removed, well two of my threads regarding my logic board problems (core duo) were removed. Another thread regarding a possible delay in MBP C2D because of screen issues was removed yesterday. So read and reply quickly.
MacBook Pro 15" 2GHz, 2GB, Week 28 (being fixed) Mac OS X (10.4.8) AMD Desktop 2.1GHz, 512MB, WinXP (SP1)
can u explain me what is the MLB? is it the motherboard?

Help! I have had my iMac G5 fitted with new Logic Board but it doesn't work
Help! I have had my iMac G5 fitted with new Logic Board but it doesn't work
I have just had my iMac G5 First Gen 1.8Ghz fitted with a new Logic Board under the Apple Repair Extension Programme for iMacs.
I got the iMac home from the repairers and switched it on and everything was working fine for about 2 hours and then all of a sudden the Error Page came up on the Screen (with a big On/Off Switch Logo) and it said I had to shut down.
So I shut it down waited a few minutes and then tried to re-boot it but nothing happened. All that happended was the Power Light in the Right hand corner came on..but nothing else....
Help! Any ideas what to do please? If you have an external firewire drive (it has to be firewire, USB won't boot on a Rev A), plug it in to the firewire port and turn it on, then boot your iMac and see if it shows on the screen.
Have you tried to hit the eject (up arrow, the last button on the top row of the keyboard) button when you boot, perhaps the repairers left a disc in the drive? Then try and put your install disc in.

Here is the picture of the logic board with the piece that has been broken off highlighted in yellow.

Is this fixable some where? Or am i s%!t out of luck?If something has broken off the logic board, you'll need to get a new logic board.

Kernel panic.. with new logic board
Hi,
So I recently replaced my logic board after trying EVERYTHING to fix a somewhat frequently occuring kernel panic. Now however.. it has happened again.
Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this? I honestly feel like I've tried everything. Could it be bad RAM? I've changed the hard drive, done a fresh OS X install (perhaps its something in my settings from migrating my old stuff back over?), new logic board.. reset PRAM, every suggestion I could find.
Here is the old discussion before I changed the logic board. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3902490
Attached the latest crash log.

Any help at all or new fixes I could try would be greatly appreciated! Very frustrating!Cheers - I've run Rember a few times and it hasn't come up with any errors, but I've heard it's not a 100% accurate test. Looks like that's the only thing left it could be!

Can applecare be extended with new logic board
My Imac is with apple having a new logic board fitted for the second time and before that they replaced the computer. Since my cover runs out in August 09 has apple been known to extend the cover when replacing the logic boards, if so how do you go about it.
If your iMac is still less than a year old, you can purchase the extended AppleCare out-of-pocket. If you already have an extended warranty, then you can no longer extend it any further.
Technically, replacement parts (such as a logic board) can have longer warranties than the rest of the computer. This is because replacement parts are covered by either a 90-day warranty, or the remainder of the limited/extended warranty, whichever is longer. This means that if you had a logic board installed on the last day of your warranty, the logic board would still be under warranty for another three months even after the computer's warranty had expired. -
Old PBG4 17 with new logic board doesn't show "built-in" AirPort
I just replaced the logic board in my summer 2003 PowerBook G4 17" which should have standard built-in AirPort. But when I go to Network, AirPort doesn't exist.
Does anyone know what the problem/cause may be? Did I miss re-connecting something? Or is the AirPort built into the logic board and the new one just didn't have one???
Please tell me before I take it a part again...
Thanks in Advance!
DanI've tried to reset all of them and now only the Extreme shows up in the Airport utility.
But I can find the Expresses as Wireless Clients. Somehow the Extreme doesn't recognise them as Airports.
With my PC I can access them all through Airport utility and they are well whithin range and respond to changes I make to the settings.
It must be the settings of the Extreme that's I've messed up.
I'll try another reset and start from scratch, again... -

Final Cut Pro and New Logic Board
I just got back my 2.4 ghz IMAC from the Apple Store, where they replaced the logic board. Before this replacement, I was able to capture via firewire into Final Cut. Now the programs stalls when opening the capture window. Can anyone help me try to solve this problem.
Thankswell if you decide to do a clean install it goes like this:
Backup all your data, everything will be erased (don't forget bookmarks, pop3 emails, FTP passwords etc) and de-authorize (or whatever they call it) Adobe Creative Suite if you have it.
Boot from the OS dvd (hold down "c" key on startup {or option will work too})
choose clean install
Then run software update.
Then install FCS, then run updates for that.
After you get a nice, clean well running system, clone it (search the forum for "clone") with Carbon Copy Cloner, Net Restore, SuperDuper etc. You can then re-image your system in minutes, instead of a few hours. -
I just had major issues with my Mac and had to get a new logic board. When I got the computer back and tried to reinstall Photoshop- it says error 6. What do I do? It is impossible to get any phone number for adobe.
Try these solutions: Error "Licensing has stopped working" | Mac OS

Facetime issue - after installing a new logic board due to liquid damage.
I installed a new logic board this week.. after installing the os x operation system and then upgrading it to mavericks and i used migration assistant to load my backuped user from an external disk.
I tried to log in using my apple id ( which is verified) it couldn't log in beacuse "could not sign in. please check your network connection and try again"
and i did all the updates of mavericks. i tried also before installing mavericks i thougt upgrading will fix it..
i saw on forums that i should add 2 DNS's (8888 and 8844) didn't work.
i tried connection to my phones hotspot - didn't work.
i also went to the firewall thing to allow it recieve cennections..
pleassee help!!
is there a way to reinstall the facetime or something?!?!?!My problem solved could possiblly be your solution: Check to make sure your system serial number is being read by your logic baord. If the tech forgot to reenter the serial number, it's a known issue for Facetime and Messages (apparantly not know enough yet though, no tech bulliten exists on the topic).
I spent several days trouble shooting my inablility to login to my account with Facetime or Messages (other cloud services worked) after upgrading to Mavericks. I went as far as doing a clean install on my hard drive after spending two hours with a baffled mac tech in a retail store and many hours searching the message boards.
I have never had a logic board (or hard drive) replaced on my Macbook Air, but somehow after the Mavericks update the logic board stopped reading the serial number on my system. It took a call to Apple and a ticket opened to engineering to figure this out (after I uploaded log files).
They were puzzled I experienced this without a logic board replacement, but it was indeed the root cause of the facetime and messages apps failing to log in, and said they'd run in to it recently more than once.
Wish I knew how to post this unbiquitously across all the boards for folks to troubleshoot by simply looking at their system info in the Apple menu; Apple scheduled an appointment for me at an Apple genius bar and it was fixed in fifteen minutes. -
New logic board, still boot problems with Turbo Fans
I bought a 2Ghz dual G5 from a guy on craigslist and he told me that the Geniuses at the Apple Store said it had a bad logic board. So I bought a brand new logic board from DVwarehouse.com, and installed it along with a new set of matched RAM from Crucial, a new HD, new PRAM battery, new video card and a new superdrive. The only thing original are the processors and power supply (and fans, of course).
When I start it up, after the chime it quickly goes into "turbo-fan mode", which I have read that means the Op Sys didn't load correctly. Many restarts later, I was able to reset the nvram in the Open Firmware, but that didn't seem to help at all. I also pressed the SMU button (according to Apple's directions), but that didn't help much either.
I've had a few successful boots, but always with the fans going full blast. I though that once I got Leopard loaded onto the HD, then it would calm down with a software update. But before I ever get that far, the G5 hangs. Sometimes the G5 will boot and access the HD but hangs soon after. Sometimes I can get it to boot off the Leopard DVD. But most of the time it just boots and sits there slowly spinning up the fans into turbo mode.
The few times it has booted to access the HD or DVD, the fans go turbo right away. Other times it will boot with a chime, but then it won't access the HD or DVD and I get noting on the display.
I should say that this behavior is almost identical to how it was acting before I replaced the logic board. But how can that be? It should be a new computer, unless the problem is in the CPUs. Is that very likely? How would I find out if the CPUs are bad?
I've been reading alot about the problems I'm having with this G5 and what I've been having seems to be very common. But I've run out of fixes. Is there anything I can do to fix this machine or is it just money down the drain?my iMac 20" G5 experience since December 2004, even though I love this machine,it has gone through 3 power supply (661-3350) replacements and 3 logic board replacement since late 2004. Pretty crazy for a single machine but I still love it. The last logic board replacement did NOT fix my boot up problem, as I expected, and the genius finally agreed to replace the power supply and that fixed it. SO: My recommendation to you is "replaced the power supply" here is one place you can get one: http://www.dvwarehouse.com/Power-supply-180W-for-iMac-G5-20--100v-661-3350---614 -0353-----NEW-p-25613.html

New logic board, and new display, but now completely dead.
Hi guys,
I've got an iBook G3, running 10.3.9.
In December 2006, the logic board failed, so I bought a MacBook, because I didn't have time to be offline waiting weeks for Apple to replace the iBook's logic board.
After much badgering, Apple reluctantly replaced the iBook's logic board under the extended warranty program.
While the iBook was with the Apple repair store, they replaced the display for new as well, even though I didn't ask them to, and even though I wasn't charged for it.
I presume that was because the store discovered that the display was duff enough to be replaced under another extended warranty program.
When I got the "repaired" unit home, with a brand new logic board, and a brand new display, I turned it on, and it seemed to be working fine, so I turned it off, and continued to use my MacBook.
A few weeks ago, the second logic board on my MacBook failed (another long horror story entirely), so I began using the iBook for the first time since it had been "repaired" some six months earlier.
Almost immediately, the iBook began exhibiting a major problem, specifically that I'd be typing away, and suddenly the display would go black.
I could just about see the icons and documents on the screen, but the unit was unusable.
So I pulled restarts, full shutdowns, disk utility, zapped the PRAM, etc, all to no avail.
It seemed to be an intermittent problem.
For example, sometimes, from a cold start, the unit would work for two or three hours until the display went black.
Other times, I'd pull a cold start, and it would go straight to the black display.
By chance, I discovered that if I gave the iBook a shake, the display would come back on.
But then it would go black after a second or two.
And then with another shake, it would come back on for a second or two.
And then it would go black after a second or two.
And then with another shake, it would come back on, sometimes for a couple of hours at a time.
So I figured that it must be a cable which, during the installation of the logic board, and/or the new display, wasn't seated correctly by the technician.
I phoned Apple, and told them about it.
They said that because I had reported the issue beyond 90 days since the logic board had been replaced, it was no longer Apple's problem.
I explained to Apple that I hadn't used the iBook for six months, because I had a MacBook.
After much badgering, Apple has agreed to replace the logic board if it's faulty.
However, Apple has refused to replace the NEW display, even if that's also faulty.
Apple is also insisting that I have to pay all the labor charges.
Meanwhile, I've noticed that the iBook is now incredibly hot.
I mean, the MacBook is infamous for running hot, but this "repaired" iBook makes my MacBook feel like a block of ice by comparison.
I don't remember the iBook running so extremely hot before the "repair."
Which has made me notice that during the last few weeks, I've never heard the iBook's fan come on.
I presume that an iBook has a fan ?
Please confirm.
Therefore, another loose cable ?
Today, the display went black again, as usual.
So I gave the iBook a shake.
But this time, nothing happened.
No display.
No fan.
No hard drive spinning.
Just silent and dead.
What do you reckon, guys ?
Duff logic board ?
And/or duff display ?
And/or duff fan ?
And/or duff cabling by the technician ?
As far as I'm concerned, I don't see why I should have to pay for yet another repair, to correct hardware and/or workmanship which was so bad that after only three weeks of ACTUAL use since the "repair", the unit is now completely dead.
All opinions and advice gratefully received.
With thanks and best wishes,
Michael
London, EnglandHi S,
Many thanks for your helpful and swift response.
I agree with you regarding the likelihood that these problems would have surfaced immediately during normal usage, regardless of how much or little time had passed since the repair.
As advised, I will inform Apple Customer Relations UK about the new developments.
Indeed, when I resubmit the iBook, I'll include a print-out of this discussion.
I agree with you about the fan.
Prior to the failure of the first logic board, I ran that iBook for YEARS, without noticing any heat issue.
Indeed, if there had been such incredible heat, then I'd have searched these discussion boards, and reported it to Apple HQ.
Therefore, the astonishing heat is definitely a new development since the "repair."
Consequently, I take on board your comments about the lack of a working fan since the "repair", which I shall also mention to Apple HQ.
As for running the Apple Hardware Test, the unit is completely dead.
The power cable is green, but the unit is now completely silent and black.
I also note your suggestions regarding the cable which connects the display to the rest of the unit, which I shall also mention to Apple HQ.
No repair sheet was ever given to me by the Apple Repair Centre (ARC).
Indeed, no receipt was ever given to me when I delivered the unit to the ARC, nor was any paperwork ever given to me when I collected the unit from the ARC.
However, Apple HQ can see on their screen that the logic board and display were both replaced for new by the ARC.
What else was and wasn't done by the ARC is a mystery.
I'll phone the ARC and ask for copies of any and all paperwork, so that I can submit it all to Apple HQ, which I note is your recommended option, rather than returning the unit to the ARC.
However, the complicating factor is that with the exception of the logic board, it is my understanding that Apple is denying any liability on any part of the "repaired" unit, including the brand new display.
If I understand Apple HQ correctly, they're now saying that all other hardware and labor costs will be mine.
I'm sure I could buy a WORKING second-hand iBook G3 for the same price as a repair, if not cheaper.
Therefore, perhaps I should return the unit to the ARC, and give them the opportunity to correct their previous workmanship, at their OWN cost.
Because as far as I'm concerned, the ARC had two customers during the repair: Apple and the end-user, as evidenced by the fact that the ARC has invoiced its first customer Apple for workmanship which was clearly not up to Apple's own standards, and the ARC has then delivered the unit to its second customer, the end-user.
In addition, regardless of Apple's 90 day warranty on repaired hardware, UK law includes the Sale of Goods Act 1979, and other relevant legislation: http://www.dti.gov.uk/consumers/fact-sheets/page38311.html
Furthermore, if the ARC is completely unhelpful, I could jump all over them, by writing to Apple HQ, with cc's to the UK editions of MacWorld, MacFormat, and MacUser magazines.
As advised, if the unit goes to Apple HQ, I will suggest that the unit is looked at carefully during disassembly, to see if errors were made during the ARC "repair."
I'm always polite when on the phone to Apple, because I love the company so much.
Indeed, even though during the last twelve months, I've been having very bad luck with the iBook, as well as with a MacBook which has exhibited so many problems that Apple has now agreed to replace old for new, I still love my Mac.
And joy, sweet joy, I've just seen on the TNT courier's tracker website, that my replacement MacBook, built by Apple in Singapore, then flown to Arnhem in Germany, then flown to Northampton UK, then delivered to Heathrow UK, left the Heathrow depot 30 minutes ago, for delivery to the customer.
And the sun is shining.
Thank you again for all your kind and wise advice.
With best wishes,
Michael

Just got my MBP back with a new logic board but...
Hello all
I just got my laptop back yesterday. They did the logic replacement due to a bad graphics card (nvidia) I was not under warranty. I was having the Videocontroller error on the AHT. I just ran the AHT today via the apple disc. It came up with 4SNS/1/40000000:TGOD-86.500. I also noticed my superdrive does not accept blank disc media, it spits them out after a few seconds in. It still install and read programs off it. Burning discs is just the issue. I posted that issue here http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=12410595#12410595 But prior to the new logic board, it recognized the discs as "blank"
Please any help would be appreciated.
MarcI had an issue whereby only certain DVDs were usable.....some were, and some weren't.
My MBP went in for repair and the SuperDrive was replaced under my AppleCare extended warranty.
You'll likely need your SuperDrive replaced.
If I didn't have Applecare, I'd be up Shyte Creek by now with some very costly repairs on my September '08 MBP.
BTW, My MBP had two logic board failures in its second year of ownership which were replaced under my AppleCare warranty.

Is there a fix for a dead ethernet port besides a new logic board?
My ethernet port went dead on my IMac. I unplugged the ethernet cable and plugged it into my laptop and it worked instantly. I am still able to connect wirelessly. I bought an apple USB to Ethernet converter and plugged it in. It worked for about 3 days and then it went dead. Once again I was able to unplug the ethernet cable, plug it into my laptop and instantly had a connection. Is there a fix for a dead ethernet port besides a new logic board and if not how do I figure out which logic board I need?
Thanks
StepThis problem baffled me. I kept getting the "ethernet cable unplugged" error after testing my cables good. Was abut to write it off as port gone bad when I found this thread.
The YouTube video reference above fixed my problem. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1P6X87qArs)
Basically go to SETTINGS/NETWORK. Then highlight your ETHERNET port and click the ADVANCED button. From there click the HARDWARE tab.
Set
CONFIGURE to MANUALLY
SPEED to whatever your ethernet speed is, in my case 1000baseT
DUPLEX - FULL DUPLEX, FLOW CONTROL
Leave MTU at Standard
Hit OK.
Then don't forget to hit APPLY. I didn't do this the first couple of times assuming hitting OK applied these settings. You gotta hit APPLY.
In about two seconds, my Ethernet connected again.
I went back and reset it to AUTOMATIC just to test and after doing so got the cable unplugged error again. So I am leaving it on manual and it's working. -
I am looking to upgrade my macbook pro 13". I have a new logic board and have searched for the spec on this i.e. hdd size and ram. will my 2009 screen work with an updated graphics card ??
Sounds just like what was happening with my Alum MB. I took it in and they replaced my battery. It seems to be ok now. I don't know what it is, but my battery was fine before 10.5.6 and the same timeframe of the firmware updates when they came out.
My battery health was jumping around but was fine before all of this happened. Unfortunately at 381 cycles I don't think you have much chance of getting the battery for free. Perhaps you can complain about the battery saying it was fine until 10.5.6 or whatever. Not sure when your computer was made, but perhaps you are eligible for this program: http://www.apple.com/support/macbook_macbookpro/batteryupdate/
