C2D MacBook Pro or G4 PowerBook??

In the Apple Refurb. store, both are available right now.
I do nothing intensive on my laptop (email, surfing, iTunes, picture transfer...) but want to move up from my iBook.
It needs to be small (12" or 15"), durable and speedy to rip CDs.
Can you sway me one way or the other with fact or opinion?
Thanks.

Indeed, go with a Macbook Pro. I went from a 1ghz PowerBook G4 to a MacBook with a Core 2 Duo that I paid $1299 for and the speedbump was outrageous and absolutely worth it. However, I missed the screen real estate and the speakers of the 15" (not to mention the glossy, for my taste, is not where it's at) and soon I was looking for a MacBook Pro. Last I checked, CDW still had the brand new, not refurbished, never opened MBP with the Core Duo's for $1329 (full one year Apple warranty as well.) They're the 2nd gen and not the Core 2 Duos (512mb ram standard vs. 1gb or 2gb, 32 bit vs. 64 and 2mb cache vs. 4mb) but I'm extremely glad with mine. It's brand new, I picked up 2gb ram for less than $200 (don't listen to the naysayers on Omni ram or other "cheap" ram. I've always used the stuff and have never had a problem. I even got Crucial once just to see if it was that much better, and I say "bah!")
So for $1329 + tax + 2gb ram, I've got a tricked out MBP for less than $1600, which also from an investment standpoint, will probably be able to be sold for very close to that even a year from now, while even the last of the PB G4's, which are around 60% slower (at least) for anything but Photoshop, are going for $1000 now and will be @ $800 or less by next year. Check out CDW if you want new (which is always a good thing) or Apple for refurbs, I guarantee you'll be happy you did.

  • The "I own a new C2D MacBook Pro" Thread!

Throughout the world many people are getting the new C2D MacBook Pro every day. I know all ready you can pick up the 15"s at a number of Apple stores and the 17"s will be arriving shortly. Please post a *short comment* about your experience whether good or bad with the new notebooks so that may all benefit from your purchase.
Not looking for a long review, just a quick chime in one way or the other about your experience with it.

I too wish I could say I was in this club. What is the logic is anouncing the availability of something without a minimum level of stock available at the stores? And what is the point in the stores saying "we'll have them in the next couple days" at first and then "we'll have them in a couple weeks" and then "we have no idea when we'll have them because everything is auto shipped"?
So after believing the local store for the first week I put my order in by phone yesterday and can now expect mine on the 17th!
How bad at planning, inventory management and the message surrounding can Apple be. They probably wont loose me as a customer but they aren't helping me convince anyone I work with to stop paying more for a comparable Dell. Honestly, if they release OS X for any PC then I probably would have bought someone else's C2D laptop a month or more ago.

  • Text rendering on MacBook Pro differs from PowerBook.

It appears that various applications use a different text rendering technique on the MacBook Pro than on the Powerbook. Camino for instance uses sub-pixel rendering on the PowerBook but standard anti-aliasing on the MacBook Pro. So do Word and MSN and others.
At first I thought it had something to do with the app being universal or not. But Camino is supposed to be a universal binary.
Anyone has a clue about why this difference?
(You can easily see if sub-pixel or standard rendering is used by zooming in with option-cmd-8. Standard rendering has only shades of gray. Sub-pixel rendering uses colors. More on OS X text rendering can be found here: http://daringfireball.net/2003/11/panthertextrendering.)

First, I wonder - does it look good or bad? Or, is this simply a comment that it is different?
Second, and I'll bet this is your answer, is that the difference is most likely due to the type of video card being used. I notice that nothing effects rendering of fonts like the type of video card.
I am interested because I will be doing lots of text work on my MBP, and would like to know if there is an issue with this. I had a notebook (Toshiba) about three years ago that the text was soft and nothing I could do would make it sharper. I ended up dumping the notebook and getting something else. MS Cleartype seems to work to some degree in Windows machines, but I don't see anything like that on my PB. However, the PB is fine as it...

  • AppleFileServer crashes on MacBook Pro after G4 PowerBook connects

My wife successfully connects as registered user to my MacBook Pro (MBP) from her PowerBook G4 (PB). However, when she tries to open the share, the MacBook Pro immediately reports crash of "AppleFileServer" and writes a lengthy crash log.
In doing the reverse, having the MBP connect to the PB, then everything is as solid as usual. Have tried deleting plist files listed in crash report and have run DiskWarrior, permissions checks and the usual chants and incantations on both machines. Anyone with some magic dust or bits o' wisdom? I would be most grateful.
Both machines are running Mac OS X 10.4.11 and had been updated with combo updaters that were downloaded and run from the local drives.

    Hi Gary,
Since you seem to have done/tried all the right stuff to fix the problem... I suspect some OS component on your Wife's book is a bit errant, I'd do an Archive & Install on her book, and of course do a Permission fix afterwards, and after any updates.
As a side note, these are the same symptoms seen while trying to connect OS8/9 with OS10.4.8+!

  • Image does not display on MacBook Pro (does on PowerBook G4!)

I created a slide in Keynote on my PowerBook G4 with an image dropped in (a pdf, I can't remember whether it was originally cut and past or dragged and dropped in). When transferring the Keynote presentation to a new macBook Pro (copying via a USB thumb drive), the presentation opens but the image does not display (everything else is OK).
The weird thing is that the image does show up in the thumbnail in Navigator View. It disappears in Light Table View, and then is gone when I return back to Navigator View. However, when I close and reopen the file, it appears again in the thumbnail.
When I click on the area where the image should be, the open squares show up around something. If I try to copy this object and past into another application (like Photoshop), I only get a blank image.
I have managed to get around this by laboriously copying the affected images on my PowerBook into separate pdf files, then transferring those files to my MacBook Pro and dropping them into place. However, I know I will find a missing image at some later date, when I no longer have access to my old PowerBook.
    How to solve this problem?
P.S. Both machines are running Keynote 4.0.2 and Mac OS 10.5.2.

    Thanks for taking a look!
The original image was created using Photoshop to cut out an image from a pdf file. Then it was either cut and pasted or dragged into Keynote.
Here are screenshots of what I get when I open the "droppedimage-17.pict" file (shown in the Show Package Contents window) using QuickTime on both machines. For the PowerBook:
    http://www.cems.umn.edu/download/attachments/Powerbook.png
    For the MacBook Pro:
    http://www.cems.umn.edu/download/attachments/MacBook_Pro.png
Strangely, the Powerbook version looks like a correct grey-scale image, while the MacBook Pro looks like a B&W image.

  • Macbook Pro vs. Powerbook

if i were to get a mac, would i do better with a 12 inch powerbook, or a macbook pro? i like the idea of a 12 inch screen, but the 15 would be bad. is the powerbook alot slower then the macbook? how much is the intel chip actually doing.
its pretty much between a tricked out 12 inch powerbook and a baseline MBP
    thanks,
    Baron

    Hi Mando,
You might want to wait a little while longer to see what Apple does with the iBook (Macbook). It looks lke that might be what you will want. But at this point I would not by a Powerbook that is almost end of life. Check out this article....

  • MacBook Pro works fine - Powerbook G4 won't backup

I was wondering if someone can help me. My MacBook Pro is fully backed up on the TC and working well with TM. My wife's 12" Powerbook G4 has access to the TC and the internet but every time I try to do her initial back up on the TC her computer eventually freezes.
In addition to that, now when I try to start the intial backup - it says that it is trying to backup 120GB, which is a mystery to me since she only has an 80GB harddrive.
I would be grateful for any help.

  • Battery life on C2D macbook pros?

anyone know if its any good?

    According to Apple:
    15-inch MacBook Pro
60-watt-hour lithium-polymer battery (with integrated charge indicator LEDs) providing up to 5 hours of battery life(1)
    17-inch MacBook Pro
68-watt-hour lithium-polymer battery (with integrated charge indicator LEDs) providing up to 5.5 hours of battery life(1)
    (1) Battery life depends on configuration and use.

  • C2D MacBook Pro upgrade to 200 GB internal

    Several questions:
    1. Is it possible to upgrade to a 200 GB internal from a 160 GB drive. Could I take my computer to an Apple Store and have them do this
    2. How much practical difference will I see. Most of my work is photoshop and Aperture with referenced images on an external USB 2.0 drive?
I have searched on the site but can not find clear answers.
    Thanks
    Steven

I think what I am asking is an Aperture question...I currently store my images on an external 160 GB Western Digital drive as referenced files. When I have completed the majority of the work on a project that resides on my MacBook Pro/160GB external I can export it as a project to the 160 GB WD, take the 160 GB WD drive to my G5, import the project and now the G5 and my laptop have identical information.
A week or two later, client calls and says "can you..and I will pay you $$$$" so I say ok..and start working on cleaning up and modifying images on my laptop. Now the data on the laptop and the G5 are different and I would like to make sure that they are the same, assuming I am now closing the project again.
I am seeking options to make all of the new stuff gets over to the G5, which is my archival system primarily?
    1. I guess I could relocate the masters to my external 160 GB drive (getting the photoshop images off of my internal and freeing space up) AND also export the revised project consolidating the images to the 160 GB external. I could then go to my G5 computer with the 160 GB external, import the revised project and delete the original one. The revised project would be up to date and I would have no need for the original one to be archived. This would work if I had only 1 or 2 revised projects, but in fact there are about a dozen....and doing all of that exporting and deleting seems like a formula for disaster!!
    2. I think it may be possible to relocate all of the managed pictures to a special folder (call it Spring Clean up)onmy160GB external. I then could generate a new project called "Spring Clean up-2007", put a new album in the "Spring Clean up-2007" project (that way I don't move these pictures to a new project). I could then export "Spring Clean up-2007" Project, consolidating images, to the external 160 GB drive. Take the external, connect to the G5 and import "Spring Clean up-2007" Project. The pictures in the imported "Spring Clean.." project would have the full version and master data attached. At that point, I could just select the pictures in the Spring Clean Up Project and drag them back to the parent project on the G5 and presumably the master file and all the version changes would go back to the parent project. Of course I might have some duplicates but at least all the data would be there.
Back to the laptop, I could remove all the images from the album in the project "Spring Clean up", thus leaving the masters and version data intact in the original projects and then I could use the relocate masters function to put whatever new masters existed in the original project folders
thought and suggestions.. does anyone else work with a laptop and a desktop and how have they solved this problem?
    thanks

  • All the problems with my C2D MacBook Pro

I just got a 2.33 GHz 15" Core 2 Duo MacBok Pro. I'm going to list all teh problems I'm having and hope that someone can at least answer one of them. Thanks
    • My Finder icon on my dock has come off and placed itself in the bottom left-hand corner of my screen. Always on top of all windows; cannot be click, dragged, right-clicked or interacted with at all.
    • My user directories are messed up. When I created my account upon first startup I named it "Me". There is also the "Home" directory which is what comes up in the Finder. Different applications save different files to different user folders. For instance. Photo Booth saves images to the "Me" user, so I cannot open finder and click the convenient "Pictures" folder. Also, my iTunes music is in the wrong "Music" folder. When I download something in Safari, it saves to "Desktop" but it's not actually on my desktop. it's in User > Me > Desktop. I only have one login account when I start up. Can I combine the two user folders and delete one? I just want everything to be able to be accessed through the sidebar on my finder.
    • My AirPort card won't connect to certain OPEN networks. Then randomly it will connect for a little while.
If I remember anything else I'll be sure to add it.
    Please help! Thank you.
    Edit:
    • This stupid FileVault Keychain crap keeps asking me for a password evefry 3 seconds. i have it turned off.
    • A lot of my setting the computer seems to ignore.

First ill start by saying zap your pram then i would say if that didnt work reinstall
then the second thing you mentioned is your fault to answer that question DONT RENAME YOUR HOME FOLDER so many complian about that

  • Can't boot from external HD with Leopard on MacBook Pro or PowerBook

I can't boot from an external HD with 10.5.5 Leopard on either my MacBook Pro or my PowerBook G4. I had a PowerBook G4 from which I could boot from either an external FW400 drive or an external FW800 drive. At some point, I stopped being able to boot from any HD, but I'm not sure if it was after upgrading to Leopard or not? Recently I just bought a MacBook Pro 15" and transferred all my files over from the PowerBook to the MacBook Pro during the install. However, even with the new computer, still cannot boot from an external drive. I have Leopard 10.5.5 running on both the external HD and the internal HD.
Is this a common problem? Anybody know how to fix it?
    Thanks!

That probably wasn't very clear was it? I have several ext. HD's, some with bootable systems and some just backups. One bootable disk was made with CopyCloner and the other was a clean format and only had an original install of the OS just to use for an emergency boot. They both booted just fine. Then at some point, they stopped being bootable. I have used the Control Panel "Startup" and also used the Option key boot and picked the bootable disk. Neither one boots anymore. It started doing this on the old PowerBook and then also refused to boot on the MacBook Pro. This is not the problem with the HD since it happens with any bootable HD. Something is going on at the system level and it was transfered from the PowerBook to the MacBook.
    Thanks,
    Bill
