C2D MacBooks still overheating? owners please report!

As far as I know, the most important problem in MacBooks is overheating.
Definitely, I DON'T want to buy a notebook where I can fry eggs on.
I touched a MacBook in a local Apple store, and I found that it was unacceptably HOT, expecially in the upper-left side (where you can type "qwerty", for example...). Both the keyboard and the bottom side.
Even worse, that computer was idling...I don't want to imagine what happens when gaming or rendering...?!?!
I'd like buying a new C2D MacBook, but I'm REALLY scared of this temperatures.
Please new MacBook C2D owners, report your experience..!!
(I think I will go on loving my actual iBookG4...ALWAYS soooo cool...ALWAYS!)
iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   933Mhz, 640Mb, 40Gb, bluetooth

Overheating is not an issue anymore - for older macbooks as well as the new C2D's. You see - when the first macbooks came out - the fans would not be working at all until the CPU reached temperatures of over 70deg C. Then new firmware now has the fans spinning constantly at minimum 1500 rpm - they never stop - and increase as the CPU temperature rises. For this reason alone all macbooks are now prety much cool.
My MacBook, when idle - averages 40 - 45 deg C. Under heavy load it wont get over 70deg C. I can have it on my lap all day and it won't get HOT. Warm is all I get.
The issue with heat is long gone - RSS is a thing of the past as well - I think you more than safe to purchase now

  • Has your Macbook Air overheating problems been solved?

    Hi All,
Has there been a solution to the Macbook Air overheating problem for you?
I'm considering selling my MBA but want to see first if there has been any new updates on this issue.
I have a Macbook Air with the specifications as follows:
Model: MacBook Air 1.6GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Production year: 2008
    Production week: 15 (April)
    OS X Version 10.5.7
Have had the computer for about a year now and it has been constantly overheating and becoming more or less unusable when doing so. Have been hoping upgrades to the software would solve this eventually but that does not seem to have happened.
As I'm writing this room temperature is about 20 degrees celcius. Laptop sits on a table with power cable plugged in. Not running any external screen. There is no video streaming or music playing. Only the Firefox browser and a few more idle apps are active such as Mail and Skype (in the background). Even under these conditions the fan is currently running loud at 6100rpm and the Macbook Air is very hot underneath.
CPU temperature is currently 54 degrees Celsius. Both cores seem to be active.
Now, as an experiment I will head over to YouTube to watch a video and open up Microsoft Word in the background, a perfectly normal usage for a computer this new. This is what happens:
The computer starts to become painfully slow. After for example clicking an item in the browser there is a 1-3 second delay before the click actually becomes effective. It's now so hot underneath that I would not want to keep it in my lap. It is hard to use the mouse pointer properly as it does not update in realtime, I have to assume where it will land based on my movements. When scrolling, the spinning wheel icon becomes active. Everything is now happening in slow motion.
Video is lagging heavily. I can only see probably 1 out of every 10 frames or less of the video. All applications running are very slow. CPU temperature is now 64 degrees celsius. Fan is at 6200. Computer is now unusable for me. When I scroll a page in the browser it takes about 2-3 seconds before anything happens. Changing tabs takes 5-6 seconds after I click them. I will have to shut it down before re-starting and resuming work. When room temperature is even higher on a hot day needless to say everything gets a lot worse quicker.
Is this normal for Macbook Air's? If that is the case they are more or less unusable for most types of normal 2009 year usage (video, audio, browsing, office work etc).
What solutions have you found? Coolbook? Software/Firmware updates? Hardware changes? Please let me know if you have been able to make your MBA not overheat under normal usage.

    Hi Everybody,
Thanks for your replies to start with.
I have tried to install Coolbook now and has it running. When using 'throttling' and letting it change CPU speeds (I think..) the problem still remains. When watching a video or other demanding task the temperature goes way up. Running a CPUTest (small or big) gets CPU temperatures of up to 84-85 C. Fan of course at 6200rpm all the time.
Right now, I have Coolbook set to 800Mhz and 0.9V. Apps running are Firefox, Skype, Mail and iTunes with no audio playing. CPU temperature at 56 c and fan speed (as usual) at 6200rpm. I can use the computer now. It is still lagging and not very fast at all. Sometimes text appear 1-2 seconds after I have written it on the keyboard.
So Coolbook has made a difference for me, but only when putting the CPU speed down to 800MHz. I wouldn't call reducing the CPU speed to half a 'solution' though and will not keep that as a long term solution. Reducing voltages for higher CPU-speeds 0.9875V for 1600MHz does not work, it still heats up massively.
Have used the MBA for the whole day today and can't recall a single time the fan has not been around 6200rpm except right after boot.
Thanks for the tips on upgrading to 10.5.8. I will try that right away and let you know how it works out.
Have also considered buying some cooling device but just as you say that feels like a bit of a last thing to resort to.
I'm surprised Apple hasn't responded stronger to this. Had this happened in the car industry we would have seen thousands of cars being sent back to the garage to be fixed.
If this only has to do with some specific production weeks then the right thing to do would be for Apple to let those people have their computers either fixed or replaced.

  • White Macbook (2008) overheating and shutting down

    Hello,
I have a white macbook from about 2008 (it is not unibody, it's the one you can remove the battery). My case has cracked all around and little pieces of the plastic have flaked away (as seen on all other 1 year+ macs of this generation). I figure this helps the heat escape rather than make the problem worse but I still plan to get the case fixed on with applecare.
My problem is that sometimes when running only iTunes and safari my CPU heats up to 90 degrees celcius (194 F) and my computer simply shuts off. I don't have the clear plastic covering vents and I just use my mac on my desk, not on a pillow or anything like that. When my computer heats up like that, the fan is rotating at about 6200+ RPM according to SMC fancontrol. Right now my computer is propped up using a large eraser to create a space for air to circulated along the bottom of the case.
What can I do to keep my Macbook from overheating? I don't want to damage my computer. I don't really do much video or real intense stuff, mainly just music.
    Any help is appreciated.

Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.

  • Since I d/loaded iCloud I can't sync my MacBook to my iPhone,,,,please help.

Since I d/loaded iCloud I can't sync my MacBook to my iPhone,,,,please help.

Video podcasts have to be in SD format, not HD. Make sure you select the proper version for your touch. If you still have problems, you can click on the podcast in iTunes and select Advanced > Create an iPod or iPhone Version. That should convert the video into something that can be played.
As far as syncing audio podcasts (I do this for video as well), I use the simple is better approach. I set iTunes to sync all unplayed podcasts and I set each podcast in iTunes to automatically delete played podcasts. The iPod is clean; iTunes is clean.

My Macbook Air broke. Please help me, Russian Apple Customer Support don't want help me. I'm in despair.
Hi, I bought my MacBook Air  in your store. In the summer of 2012. My mac is included in the program MacBook Air Flash Storage Drive Replacement Program. I live in Russia. I called the Russian support Apple. They told me to bring mac to an authorized service center. An authorized service center I was told to wait 45 days of the new flash storage drive. It's very long for me. I can `t wait long. I work on a Mac. I do not have another computer. Russian support Аpple does not want to help me. Can you help me? Serial number my MacBook Air : c0*******rvc

Leaving you without a computer for 45 days isn't acceptable. Call Apple and ask for a loaner or replacement. Some people have been receiving them.
If you still have no luck, then consider getting a USB 3.0 HDD and installing and running OS X on it until the replacement part is in.

  • The "I own a new C2D MacBook Pro" Thread!

Throughout the world many people are getting the new C2D MacBook Pro every day. I know all ready you can pick up the 15"s at a number of Apple stores and the 17"s will be arriving shortly. Please post a *short comment* about your experience whether good or bad with the new notebooks so that may all benefit from your purchase.
Not looking for a long review, just a quick chime in one way or the other about your experience with it.

I too wish I could say I was in this club. What is the logic is anouncing the availability of something without a minimum level of stock available at the stores? And what is the point in the stores saying "we'll have them in the next couple days" at first and then "we'll have them in a couple weeks" and then "we have no idea when we'll have them because everything is auto shipped"?
So after believing the local store for the first week I put my order in by phone yesterday and can now expect mine on the 17th!
How bad at planning, inventory management and the message surrounding can Apple be. They probably wont loose me as a customer but they aren't helping me convince anyone I work with to stop paying more for a comparable Dell. Honestly, if they release OS X for any PC then I probably would have bought someone else's C2D laptop a month or more ago.

Apple will never release personal information about you or anyone else to any consumer.  It is your responsibility to verify the device before purchasing it if you choose to go through a third party.  Recommendation: Buy Apple products from an authorized reseller.
You are experiencing Activation Lock.  If the previous owner will not remove the device from their account there is nothing you can do unless the place you purchased it from will give you a refund.
    Activation Lock: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5818
What if I purchase a device that is still linked to the previous owner's account?
Contact the previous owner as soon as possible and ask them to erase the device and remove it from their account. For complete instructions, read how to remove a device from a previous owner's account.
How do I check for Activation Lock before purchasing a used device?
When purchasing an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from someone other than Apple or an authorized Apple reseller, it is up to you to ensure that the device has been erased and is no longer linked to the previous owner’s account.
Follow each of these steps to make sure that you can use the device you purchase:
Turn the device on and slide to unlock. If the passcode lock screen or the home screen appears, the device has not been erased. Ask the seller to completely erase the device by going to Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings. Do not take ownership of any used iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch until it has been erased.
Begin the device setup process. After choosing a language, choosing a country, and connecting to a network, the device will begin activation. If you are asked for the previous owner’s Apple ID and password, the device is still linked to their account. Hand the device back to the seller and ask them to enter their password. If the previous owner is not present, they can remove the device from their account by signing in to icloud.com/find. Do not take ownership of any used iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch until it has been removed from the previous owner’s account.
You will know that a device is ready for you to use when you are asked to “Set up your iPhone", “Set up your iPad", or “Set up your iPod” during the device setup process.

  • Here we go - EVERY ONE CRYING NOW - I want the C2D macbook =)

Its so funny when u see people crying that they didn't wait long enough for the new C2D MacBook.
If you buy a Ford Mustang - 450Hp and your friend gets one with 490Hp - do u really think that you'd be able to tell the difference in real world? Even on a race track - its the driver that makes all the difference.
How you use your macbook is esential. People wont be able to tell the difference between CoreDuo and Core2Duo. Most of us never utilize the full capabilities of our macbooks - so why cry for the new one?
It only looks better on paper.
It has the Dual Layer DVD burner - but I wont dish out 9 times the cost of regular DVD for a Dual Layer DVD - that is only double the storage capacity. 75cents for DVD-R - 6.99 for a Dual Layer DVD. I'll just wait for Mac with Blue-Ray - now that's worth it.
Finally - who's to say the new Mac's wont be plagued with different kinds of problems. If you look at the MacBook Pro forum, you will see that the new C2D Pro's have inferior Displays - people are complaining about the uneven brighness - some still have problems with heat and warping - people are complaining about all sorts of things with the new Macs
SO DONT WORRY AND BE HAPPY - if you MacBook WORKS WELL - THANK G O D - =)

Honestly yes i have to say that i am a little jealous and feel a little short changed on this, however, i agree with the fact that in the day to day people are NOT going to notice any difference. With the old core duo processors you're pulling at the very least the equivalent of dual 3.2ghz Pentium 4 processors (this going from a pentium M 1.86 running like a 3.2). The one nice thing is the upgrade with the hard drives, that i have to admit, and also the RAM is the thing that bothers me because if i had not used a student discount, it would have cost me $100 more for what they're offering standard.
I still love the macbook i have, maybe now though i can find it cheaper to buy 2gb to stick in. If people keep their laptops maintained, a new computer can last and serve its duty for 2 years or even more. Games wise no the macbook is always going to be bottom of the barrel, especially until things come out with universal binaries.

  • C2D MacBook -- the CPU whine is GONE!

So, my black C2D MacBook has been up and running for the past three hours, and there is absolutely no hint of CPU whine!
That's my happy ending to a very sad tale of one bad rev. A MacBook after another...
This is the FOURTH MacBook I've had in the past six months. The first one was damaged right out of the box (misaligned case, and screwdriver scratches all over the bottom), so Apple replaced it. The replacement machine developed a really loud, grindy noise coming from the fan, and after two trips to the Apple repair center with no improvement, Apple finally agreed to replace that machine last week. The replacement had a nice, quiet fan, but plenty of CPU whine. Still not ideal, but I was resigned to live with it.
This morning, I learned of the C2D update. Fortunately, every time the Apple Store in Ginza, Tokyo, issued me a replacement machine, they also issued me a new sales receipt. So, I took the replacement MacBook I got last week to the Apple Store today, showed them my receipt for the latest replacement (indicating that I was within the 14-day return period), and asked for an exchange. I had to pay the restocking fee, which amounted to about $150. The way I look at it, I paid Apple about a dollar a day for the last five months to "rent" their rev. A MacBooks until the rev. B's were released!
Needless to say, I'm a very satisfied customer right now.
    Whisper-quiet, super-quick and brand-spankin' new!

i would like congratulate you and to share your jubilation!
i have also had three macbooks since they came out after my very reliable ibook was stolen. no end of problems with my macbooks and just send the last one back a couple of days ago. only to log on today and find they have 2 core duo's now. So ordered one straight away. now i cant wait to recieve it :o) but am scared of what problems these may come with

Yes I have reinstalled Driver. and I have reset The printer system. Just wen through fonts the other day with fontbook to verify that fonts were okay.  But did tell it to resolve conflicts.
Just ran AppleJack (I have OSX.4.11) and it cleaned all the fonts Caches unless it doesn't touch acrobat font caches. I let it run through all steps.  Tried after doing this I'll go back and try something and report Back.

These types of messages often indicate a problem with the devices serial number, have you had your phone repaired at any stage or did you buy it second-hand.

    Hello farahani hairon nizar,
If your Apple ID was changed from your old account, you may have to change it back to your old account to be able to sign out and then change it back after that is done. Take a look at the article below for more information.
