C2D temp and speed

Hi
I finally bought my macbook. A brand new C2D at 2.0ghz. My question is about two things. First of all, my temp is high 40 to mid 50 in light task (internet browsing, word etc.). But when I max out the cpu, the temp goes rapidly up to 80, fan go ful blast and stay there as long as the cpu is working hard (like ripping one of my dvd with handbrake). It seems high for a pc guy who nerver saw anything higher than 65 on is AMD desktop. Is it normal for a laptop to go that high ?
Second question, when trying to find answer for those temps, I’ve read that the intel chip is suppose to trothle down (up to 1.5ghz) when your doing something not to demanding. But coreduo temp shows that my cpu is almost always at 2.0ghz, even on idle. I’ve seen it going down but only for 2 or 3 seconds and than it goes back to 2.0.
Thanks for the answers, and, by the way, I really love that OS !!!

Both the MacBooks and the Pros run hotter than many expect because of the Core Duo CPUs. I believe that's still basically true with the Core 2 Duos. There may have been more complaints about the MBPs, one reason perhaps being that the MBP aluminum case feels hotter than the MB plastic case. And the fan management policy has evolved with SMC firmware updates.
It appears that CoreDuoTemp gives wonky CPU frequency readings with OS 10.4.8. I use Hardware Monitor, and it shows believable CPU stepping, mostly at the low end of the 1-2 GHz range.
My machine runs a bit cooler than the OP's, but I also would not think that the reported temperatures are cause for concern. At high CPU load, the fan does ramp up to max speed.

Built this system last week when i install core center I get no 3.3 v readings. cpu temp plays between 18c to 60c and the fan speed from 800 t0 6000rpm. Check in the bios all voltage readings are fine but cpu temp and fan readins can be way off. Also installed lastest versions of mbm and get the same results. Flashed bios to latest version also. • CPU Temp and Fan Speed

    Hi
According to SMC Fan Control and iStat my CPU is running at 74C currently and often 90C under light load with associated fan speed of 6200 rpm. I have checked activity monitor and very little load on CPU jsut safari and Activity Monitor have any significant usage ( 10% ish). Is this a 'normal' CPU temp and if not are there any ways to check cooling or in crease cooling, ultimately to keep the fan low and noise down, battery life up??
    many thanks

    thanks for the response.
'All processes' is selected - showing 50-70% CPU idle. MacBook has good ventilation, sitting on a hard table. I upgraded the HD a while ago, to a 7200 rpm 320GB unit, would this make a difference?

  • AMD Athlon 64 3000 Idle temp and Fan Speed needed.

Does anybody out there know what the CPU idle temp and fan speed should be? My Core Center shows 28C and 3308 rpm. Not sure if this is correct.

  • Satellite P750-10R idle temp and fan speed

I have just received a P750-10R and I am wondering if the idle temp and fan speed is normal. I do not have it on eco mode and the processor is at around 50 on core 1 and 47on core 2. According to the Health Monitor the fan runs at 71% speed which is rather loud in my opinion.
The ambient temp here is not very high, maybe 21-23 celcius.
Does anyone have a similar model that behaves the same way?
    Regards,
    Danel

    Small update on the issue.
Switching to eco mode will shut off the fan for a short time. Switching back from eco mode puts the fan immediately at approx. 67% speed, no matter what is running at the time. Fan doesn't seem to run at any speed under 67% but can go higher.
Could it possibly be the recent bios update? I didn't run the computer for very long on the bios it shipped with, so I haven't got a comparison base between the two versions.

  • Y730 Game Zone Temp and Fan Speed Display

I've got a Y730 that I'm having issues troubleshooting.  Currently the fan runs full speed and the display for Fan Speed and CPU temp on the Game Zone don't register anything.  I've tried running some apps that are suppose to read and display fan information and they also don't pick anything up.
I'm a little confused about what is going on because both the temp and the fan speed aren't displayed. Does all this information come from the fan or could there be something else that is causing the issue?

USB operations involves quite a bit of CPU action, Elphidieus.
Firewire places less demand on the CPU but, in a situation like the one you describe can involve both increases in power usage and in HD temperatures.
The fan speeds on Macs are not simply responsive to CPU usage. Both HD temps and power usage can also play a part in the equation that ultimately produces the fan speed. As HDs have much lower heat tolerance than CPUs you will find that it is quite common to see the fans ramp up when doing a large file transfer over FW (or USB, for that matter) , especially if the internal HD temp gets to over about 50-55º Celsius.

  • USB/FireWire usage increases CPU temp and fan speed

    Hi,
I'm curious, does the usage of USB and FireWire ports increase CPU temperature and fan speed...?
I have an M-Audio Fast Track USB interface plugged in and whenever I play any songs from iTunes using that interface as an output, my CPU temp increased and fan speed jumped from 2000 to 3300 rpm. And on separate occasion, an 8GB of file transfer from an external FireWire-based HDD had both fans speed up to 4,400 rpm.
Is this normal...? All these were done with an external display plugged onto the MBP with "clamshell" mode.

  • Opinions on Speed fan to montior temps and stuff in PC?

Since Windows 7 doenst seem to have a utility like this, what are folks thoughts on Speedfan as a way to monitor PC temps and such?

    >do not change any system settings
I no longer use it since I prefer the HWMonitor information screen, but I have SpeedFan 4.40 installed (reminder to self... uninstall SF)
When I click the CLOCK tab at the top, the following message pops up
    This is an advanced feature.
By setting the wrong motherboard or the wrong clock, you might hurt your system.
Use it at your own risk and only if you really know what you are doing :-)
I have never DONE anything on that screen, but that "looks" to me as if SpeedFan will, in fact, allow you to change settings
But, since I have never tried to change anything... that could be a wrong reading of the message

  • How can i get temp and such on core install

I know this has been asked a million times but i can't find an answer (maybe i am just that noob). I am trying to get the temp and fan speeds etc from the computer running windows server 2012 r2 core. here are the specs of my computer:
    mobo - ASUS M5A99FX pro r2
    CPU - AMD 8320
    RAM - 16G
The mobo comes with AI Suite which shows me this info but i can't install it on a core OS. It will also allow for tweaking of the settings. I would like like to be able to watch what is happening in the box as far as temps and such. I manage the server with
either windows 8.1 or windows 10 but i see nothing on how to get this info. Any help would be great but i really need it to be a free solution. Thank you in advance for any and all replies.

For you to be able to do that from a Microsoft-only solution, the manufacturer has to expose that information, most likely via WMI.  The fact that ASUS has a program to show the information may imply that they have not exposed it.  A quick way
to check is to go to a PowerShell window running as administrator and issue this PowerShell cmdlet.
    gwmi MSAcpi_ThermalZoneTemperature -Namespace "root/wmi"
If that returns an error, it could be that ASUS has not exposed it.  So, that means you need to contact ASUS to ask them to see if they have exposed it via WMI.  If so, may they expose it differently, so get the details from them as to how to access
it via WMI.  If they have not, then you would have to rely on their program, which from your description, does not work on core installations.

  • Java Audio Metronome | Timing and Speed Problems

    Hi all,
I’m starting to work on a music/metronome application in Java and I’m running into some problems with the timing and speed.
For testing purposes I’m trying to play two sine wave tones at the same time at regular intervals, but instead they play in sync for a few beats and then slightly out of sync for a few beats and then back in sync again for a few beats.
From researching good metronome programming, I found that Thread.sleep() is horrible for timing, so I completely avoided that and went with checking System.nanoTime() to determine when the sounds should play.
I’m using AudioSystem’s SourceDataLine for my audio player and I’m using a thread for each tone that constantly polls System.nanoTime() in order to determine when the sound should play. I create a new SourceDataLine and delete the previous one each time a sound plays, because the volume fluctuates if I leave the line open and keep playing sounds on the same line. I create the player before polling nanoTime() so that the player is already created and all it has to do is play the sound when it is time.
In theory this seemed like a good method for getting each sound to play on time, but it’s not working correctly.
At the moment this is just a simple test in Java, but my goal is to create my app on mobile devices (Android, iOS, Windows Phone, etc)...however my current method isn’t even keeping perfect time on a PC, so I’m worried that certain mobile devices with limited resources will have even more timing problems. I will also be adding more sounds to it to create more complex rhythms, so it needs to be able to handle multiple sounds going simultaneously without sounds lagging.
Another problem I’m having is that the max tempo is controlled by the length of the tone since the tones don’t overlap each other. I tried adding additional threads so that every tone that played would get its own thread...but that really screwed up the timing, so I took it out. I would like to have a way to overlap the previous sound to allow for much higher tempos.
I posted this question on StackOverflow where I got one reply and my response back explains why I went this direction instead of preloading a larger buffer (which is what they recommended). In short, I did try the buffer method first, but I want to also update a “beat counter” visual display and there was no way to know when the hardware was actually playing the sounds from the buffer. I mentioned that on StackOverflow and I also asked a couple more questions regarding the buffer method, but I haven’t received any more responses.

Any help getting these timing and speed issues straightened out would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

  • MBP cpu temps and fanspeed help

So I have a MBP intle core i5 2.5GHz with 4 GB of ram, I thinkits either a 2008 model or 2010, I bought it new in 2010.
It has always gotten pretty hot, but thats what MBPs are supposed to do, I get it, but lately I have been testing temps and RPM with istat pro and rmcfancontrol and I think there may be a problem.
my temps all seem fine exceptmy CPU temp, which is regularly above 70 degrees. when doing semi extensive things like watching videos, streaming netflix or menial photoshop tasks, it is generally 80-85, with the fans around 3.5k RPM to 5K RPM. If I plug in my new 21 inch monitor (1920x1028 resolution) and play online poker, watch videos, or any design tasks involving adobe programs, ive seen it jump as high as 94 degrees, and im sure RPM atleast 6k, these may both go even higher as I have not tested the max yet.
this is usually when I have say an online poker lobby with tables going, a tracking software db running, skype on and firefox on. one question I have is, will tthere be less strain on the cpu if I drop the resolution of my new monitor? I dont want to drop it past 1600x1000 (not sure of the exact dimensions) because then it is defeating the purpose of why I bought a new larger screen with a high res.
second, I already run a desk sized fan on my MBP while it sits on an elevated pad (0.25 in approx) with 2 build in fans, left and right. The cpu is located just above the ESC button and that is where the heat is obviously centered so i place my cooling efforts as much as I can on that area.
my next question is, with fancontrol, how high can i force the fans to run and for how long while doing these kind of tasks on dual monitors? Can I set the left side fan to run at 5-6k as a default when playing a session of online poker (this is my part time job so its an important question) while leaving the right fan at 2k? or would it be better to keep them balanced? how long can they run at high rpm before it could cause problems? how long can my mbp run at constant temps of 80-95 degrees before it is dangerous for it? like I said it is mostly common for it to be between 75-85 at most times.
and last but not least, could this be a defect that it runs at such high temps? could it be my fans that are just plugged up and need a cleaning or replacing?
all suggestions are welcome, thank you

Of course. A smaller resolution will require less performance to your dedicated graphic card. Note that your Mac has got two graphic cards (an Intel card and a NVIDIA GeForce one), and your computer switches to the dedicated graphic when it requires more graphic performance.

We don't recommend smcFanControl because your Mac knows what's the correct fan speed and because this application modifies the SMC.
It's not good that your fans run at maximum speed for a long time (5000 rpm is too high). Now, the best you can do is to reset the SMC > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964 If you have problems with the fan speed, this should solve the problem.

If the SMC reset doesn't work, I suspect two things: the first, that you have a hardware problem, and the second, that there's a process eating CPU and memory when you are using the computer, because those temperatures are not normal. Also, at that fan speed, they may fail
