  • Apple mail won't save outgoing server port...? Odd symptom.

Each time I close Mail, the SMTP port reverts to 25. I can enter a new port, but Mail won't save that port info. I have to re-enter after opening Mail each time.
    Symptom goes like this:
Open Mail, then when sending 1st message after opening app an error "cannot send mail using selected server" appears. I need to go into the settings & switch the port from the default port that is displayed (25), to 3535. After doing that & clicking ok, closing the window, the password dialog box appears & mail sends just fine. Every other message from that point will send.
Close Mail, then reopen. Have to repeat same process again.

Two weeks later (after post, above)
I Solved the Problem - I reinstalled Mac OSX 10.6.6 (It was rather painless)
My Mail is working again. Safari now also again remembers passwords.
Also, my Aperture's Mail export also works. (Mail is no longer grayed out).

  • Mail won't save info in Subject field in Drafts folder

    Hi,
For some reason, Mail won't save what I type into the Subject field for messages in the Drafts folder.
    Why?
I can save in any other field for any message in the Drafts folder... This has been going on for awhile, both with Mavericks and Yosemite though it worked earlier with Mavericks.
    Cheers,

(Apple hasn't updated the list of OS's yet so it says 10.10 below...)

Sounds like a limit of your ISP, as it's trying to put it back on the mailserver, which may not accept such a large file.

  • Mail won't save sent messages

I just got this computer- a hand me down from my boyfriend- and I am having trouble adjusting to Mail. It does not save the mail that I write, and in fact tells me so every time I start writing a new mail message. The preferences are enabled to save sent mail-- but the computer also tells me there's an error every time i start up the computer.
Can anyone tell me what I can do to remedy this? What is going on?

    iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

This whole thing is very confusing to me and I'm sorry if I seem vague. This new computer is fabulous- but I'm used to my ancient blue G3 and Entourage.
I believe that my account is an IMAP account. I followed your directions, substituting "IMAP" for "POP." I sent a sample email, and a pop down menu did not appear and warn me that my mail could not be saved. However, it is not in the saved messages folder.
Just to clarify, on the left of the Mail screen there is an Inbox, with smaller subfolders: Drafts, Sent & Trash. These folders mirror what is on my account online. Under this is a little paper airplane icon that says Sent. This continues to be empty, no matter what I do. The preferences are set to Never delete sent messages. Also, if I hit "save as draft," I get a message that says, "The message could not be saved."
Would trashing the Norton stuff help? I'm not sure if that is related to this question.
    Thanks!

  • Apple Mail won't save "Use Autodiscover service" with Exchange

Apple Mail is discovering the wrong servers when connecting to Exchange. I want to set it manually so I uncheck "Use Autodiscover service" and put in the correct servers. But when I quit and restart Mail, it automatically rechecks "Use Autodiscover service" and automatically picks up the wrong servers again. Can some one suggest why it won't save my setting and how to make the unchecked setting stay unchecked?

Well first, I'd recommend your IT folks configure Autodiscover to return the correct results ;-)

  • Sent Mail, Won't Read

When I'm online and try to access my sent emails this is the message that appeares where the sent email body should be:
The message from XXX <[email protected]> concerning XXX has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it.
The thing is, is I am already online. This issue has gradually developed. I used to be able to access my sent mail no problem. Then I started getting this message. At first I could resolve it by rebooting mac mail. When That no longer worked I would resolve it by rebooting the computer. Now nothing works. All other functions in mac mail seem to work fine. I currently have 61 messages in the sent file.
I recently ran fsck and it said everything seemed to be OK.
    I'm running a 1.8 gig single processor G5 with OS 10.3.9, and mail 1.3.11 (V622/624).
    Thank you,

Since the account's Sent mailbox is well over the recommended mailbox size limit for Panther Mail and remains 1.7 GB in size, the messages remain in the mailbox.
Quit the Mail.app first and using the Finder go to Home > Library > Mail > this POP account named folder (named by the user name and incoming mail server for the account) > Sent Messages.mbox.
Move the Sent Messages.mbox to the Desktop.
Launch Mail and a new Sent Messages.mbox will be created automatically by Mail within the account named folder when sending the next message with the account.
This will allow the Mail.app to function properly again and not risk losing any new messages sent with this account while trying to recover the existing messages in the old Sent Messages.mbox moved to the Desktop.
Send me an email and I'll forward you an mbox breaker script that splits such a mailbox into smaller sections. There is no guarantee with this script but it has worked well for others. If this doesn't work, the messages will be lost.

  • Sent Mail won't stay on IMAP server

I have Apple Mail set up as the default client for my IMAP account. All incoming email remains on the server, but sent mail goes directly to the local folders on my Macs but does not remain on the server. Email sent from Thunderbird remains on the server, which suggests that it is an Apple Mail issue.
Can someone offer a suggestion about how this might be addressed?
    Thanks much in advance.

When you have more than one account, there is a small black triangle beside the Sent Icon -- click it, and the separate Sent mailbox for each account will be revealed. Then employ the Use This Mailbox For command.

  • Mail won't save drafts or sent messages.

Mail wont save any of my sent messages or drafts anymore, even though I have the setting set to store them in preferences. Am I missing something?

  • Mail won't save large sent messages in the "sent" folder

I have just sent an 8MB e-mail that I confirmed was received - but it simply doesn't appear in the sent messages. Not even in the "recovered messages" folder.
Has anyone had the same experience and could fix it?
    Thanks,

  • Mail Won't Save Incoming or Deleted Emails

I just started using Mail 1.3.11 on OS 10.3.9 (after the warrenty expired, of course).
Mail deletes (or otherwise loses) incoming mail that's more than about 5 days old. I can't find it anywhere. And, regardless of how much I delete, it shows just about nothing in the trash meaning I can't recover deleted mail. For the same address, it saves some sent items under "Sent" and some inside that address' folder under "Sent Items", even for the same day.
My preferences are set to store everything on the computer rather than the server.
This is totally screwed up, nothing like I expect from Apple.
    Can anyone help?

    eMac   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Sadly though, they didn't answer the problem.
Which problem? Moving/Copying your messages to custom
“On My Mac” mailboxes does certainly solve the
problem of those messages being lost as a result of
AOL purging them from the server...
You're right. Is moving incoming mail the only way to keep it for more than a couple days after it's read?
The problem happens on both AOL and Adelphia.net
accounts, in other words, on all types of accounts.
This doesn’t happen with all types of
accounts. Actually, Mail has absolutely no bearing on
this. You would experience the same issues if you
accessed your AOL account with any other IMAP mail
    client.
As to your Adelphia.net account, please describe what
the issues really are there. I find it hard to
believe the problems with that account are exactly
the same as with the AOL account.
The problem is exactly the same on AOL and Adelphia. Incoming mail disappears in about 3 days after it's read. I haven't left unread mail that long to see what happens.
That time appears to be 27 days when the messages I
have disappear much quicker, in about 3 days.
Where are you getting this information from?
It's in the AOL link you sent above.
Read messages are purged much sooner.
Now that sounds like the problem I'm having. How can I research and manage that 'purge' in Mail?
AOL (using AOL software) won't purge unless you set the preferences that way. Mail's preferences don't address managing the inbox - no choices on purging, etc.
    Thanks again!

  • Mail won't Save As

While I can save a sent email as a text file to my chosen location, I don't seem to be able to do the same with a message I have just composed. Can it be that I must first send an email before I am allowed to save it outside the Mail app? My first thought was that maybe I had to use Save on a new message before I could Save As but this was not the case. Save As just doesn't appear to work unless a message has been sent - which forces me to make an extra couple of mouse clicks than I should surely need to...
I'm new to Mail (from Eudora) and a bit baffled by its non-Apple klunkiness. So many clicks to do the most straightforward tasks...
    Simon

Thanks but that's the same number of steps as Send then Save As - I was hoping for the facility to save a new message straight to a text file before sending it... I guess I've been spoilt by Eudora 3!

  • Lion mail won't save my SMTP port

My mail setup requires SMTP to use 1025 for the port. I change this under the preferences but if I restart the mail program, it does not appear to save this setting. Is this a bug or can I set this manually behind the scenes to avoid having to change this each time I restart the program?

Try deleting the server from the smtp list, save the changes and quit Mail. Then open up Keychain and remove the smtp server for that account from the password list plus any smtp duplicates for that account.
Open mail and see if the server deletion held. If so, recreate the smtp server for that account.

  • Apple Mail won't save to iPhoto

On snowLeopard, with a 'last year's' version of iPhoto...Mail will not send photo to iPhoto.
I have the button to send to iPhoto, and iPhoto dock icon does a little bounce, but picture doesn't show up in iPhoto.
Even from QuickLook, I can press that "Send to iphoto"...but the picture never appears in iPhoto.
    We did repair permissions.
This OSX was recently clean install.
User was migrated from iBook g4 (Tiger, I think).
    Help?
    Thanks,
    rickvv

    Greetings Rick,
    Questions:
What version of iPhoto are you running?
Do you have a backup of your iPhoto Library?
When was the last time you did this process and it worked and what has changed between then and now?
    As a test:
    Quit iPhoto
Hold down the option key and launch iPhoto
Click to create a new test iPhoto Library
    Quit iPhoto
Open Mail and attempt to save and image to the new test iPhoto Library
    Cheers.

  • Mail won't save MobileMe Settings

After .mac changed to MobileMe, I changed the settings in OS X Mail so that it worked with servers using the "me.com" domain name rather than "mac.com." However, whenever I change settings, the changes to not seem to stay. Despite telling Mail to save the settings prior to closing the settings window, if I go back into settings, the "me.com" settings have been changed to "mac.com."
Has anyone else noticed this? Is there a fix?

Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.
Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
Try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear and again when you log in. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don’t do them all at once.

  • Mail won't save rules

I've upgraded to Mountain Lion and now all my mail.app rules are missing. Worse, I can add a new rule, close and then reopen the app,  and the newly created rule is gone. Any ideas?
    Mark Allison

    Hi Mark and others,
I may have a solution to your problem as the following fix worked for me.
    Close Mail.
    Go to… System Preferences > iCloud…
    Uncheck "Documents & Data".
Open Mail and create a new rule. Quit Mail and re-open to confirm you new rule is still there.
You can then turn "Documents & Data" back on.
Everything seems to be working for me correctly since I did this.
    Hope this helps,
    ∞ matt
