  • Windows 7 freezes / hangs when playing video or audio on any media player

    I've had this issue since installing Windows 7 (32 bit) over 2 months ago and have been actively seeking a fix for the majority of those two months. In windows XP pro (32 bit), I had no issues whatsoever. The problem manifests itself as a complete hang of all system functions and inability to interact with my computer aside from moving the pointer around.
    This only occurs when I am playing some sort of media (mp3, avi, mp4, mkv, etc) on any media player that I had installed at the current time of testing (WMP12, VLC, Realplayer). The initial response is a hang of the system which then can become a freeze if I click around too much during the hang. After approximately 3-5 minutes the problem is alleviated and the system plays catchup with the video/audio sync.
    Below is a complete rundown on my system and fixes floating from other threads that I have attempted.
    My System Spec:
    Windows: Windows 7 Ultimate (32 Bit) Version 6.1 Build 7600
    Motherboard: Gigabyte Ds4-X48 Crossfire Ready
    GPU: ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB 256Bit DDR5
    CPU: E8500 Wolfdale (3.16) Core2Duo
    Ram: 4GB ( 2x 2GB OCZ Reapers @ PC8500 1066MHZ )
    PSU: 600W OCZ GameXStream
    HDD - Primary - 1.5TB Seagate
    HDD - STORAGE - 1.5TB Seagate + 500GB Western Digital
    Audio - Integrated Realtek
    Drive Bays: SATA Combo Drive (Samsung) + IDE Lightscribe DVD-MultiRecorder RW
    As you can see, my system is more than capable of running Windows 7 and probably just as qualified to captain a space shuttle.
    Things I have tried to no avail
    - Changing the Power Plan
    - Adjusting the overclock of my GPU to factory defaults
    - disabling Media Player Network Sharing in services.msc
    - Only having WMP12 installed
    - Shark007 Codec Pack
    -Not having Shark007 Codec Pack
    - Undergrading WMP12 to WMP11
    - CLEAN BOOT - Freezes/hangs still occured regardless.
    - Registry optimization and cleaning
    - Playing video after fresh install still causes freezes
    - SQMClient/MachineThrottling IS NOT THERE TO BE DISABLED OR DELETED
    - Adjusting RAM timing,frequency and voltage in BIOS
    - Use Display driver provided by Windows Update for ATI Radeon HD 4870
    - Tested several other Catalyst and Display drivers
    - Updated Chipset , Audio Driver, Network Driver
    - Clean installed 4+ times ( I clean installed inbetween all of the previous attempts listed above)
    - Uninstalling programs such as AIM, MSN Messenger, Adobe products, Daemon Tools Lite, Adobe Flash Player 10 ActiveX
    -My computer is not eligible for the Intel Matrix Storage update
    -Disabling aero
    I am now starting to suspect maybe Company of Heroes may be an issue as it is Divx endorsed.
    I froze once while typing this up due to wmp12 playing a mp4 music video in the background.
    Can anyone recommend a good skin and theme that will make Windows XP look like 7? I'm starting to think that it's my only solution.

    Hi,
    Thank you for your posting.
    As for this system freezing issue, we generally need to analyze the performance monitor logs and memory dump files to locate the root cause. Unfortunately, debugging is beyond what we can do in the forum because of the nature of forum support. A support call to our product service team is needed for the debugging service. I'd like to recommend that you contact Microsoft Customer Support Service (CSS) for assistance so that this problem can be resolved efficiently. To obtain the phone numbers for specific technology request please take a look at the web site listed below:
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;EN-US;PHONENUMBERS
    If you are outside the US please see http://support.microsoft.com for regional support phone numbers.
    Having said that, I'd still like to provide the following general troubleshooting steps to see if we can eliminate this problem:
    Note: Please perform a complete system backup first. If any unexpected issue occurs, we can quickly restore the system to the current status.
    1.    Scan your system to make sure that the system is virus free. Temporarily disable your anti-virus software to see if this problem is gone.
    2.    If you have recently installed any software, hardware or drivers, please remove them.
    3.    Run Process Explorer to check which processes are using a lot of memories or cause high CPU utilization:
    Process Explorer
    4.    If the process is a service, you can use these steps to find out what applications are using most of the CPU: Open Task Manager, click on the Processes tab, look for the process that is using the CPU and note its PID (Process ID). Note that you may need to go to the View/Select Columns menu and make sure that PID (Process Identifier) is checked.
    Once you have the PID run the following from a command prompt:
    tasklist /svc
    This should give you the application associated with the PID you identified in the previous step.
    However, if the issue still persists, please contact Microsoft Customer Support Service (CSS) for further troubleshooting. I hope the problem will be resolved soon. Thanks!

  • What is the proper way to fix the Flash Plug-in issue that causes Firefox to hang when playing Flash videos

    This is annoying and causing me to set my default to Chrome. Firefox hangs when playing Flash. I have tirelessly tried everything I could. Uninstalling Flash via the Adobe download. Uninstalling FF and every single one of it's folders. I've done it all, multiple times....and continue to have the exact same problem, any Flash video hangs. Please help, I have read countless articles about others having this same problem, yet nobody offers a real solution.

  • ITunes freezes when playing video.

    I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. Let me start by saying I've seen many others complain about this with mostly no resolution.
    To elaborate, when initiating any video in iTunes (be it a movie, TV show, music video, or iTunes Store preview), the application immediately hangs. No errors -- iTunes just stops responding and can only be closed by killing its process. I've tried all the solutions people hash out time and again to no avail. This has been happening since iTunes 10, and ever since I've been playing all its videos through QuickTime (which works perfectly).
    In Safe Mode, however, a black box appears briefly (as if the video's about to play), before a Windows "iTunes has stopped responding" prompt comes up. Not only that, but I also get two error logs in Event Viewer:
    Application Error:

    I don't know how helpful these logs are, but I've never seen anyone post anything similar when reporting this issue. Microsoft's link in the second one's header tells you to install a "newer" version of iTunes 64-bit even if you have the newest one (and I've done it with no improvement). In one post, iTunes wouldn't play video for somebody until they were told to uninstall Klite Codec Pack. This was the only time I came across this suggestion, and, having Klite, did it too, but with no improvement. iTunes still hangs when trying to play video, it crashes "properly" with a Windows prompt when trying to play video in Safe Mode, and QuickTime works fine (which I guess is my only solution).
    Some insight from Apple would be appreciated. This has been happening since iTunes 10, so I consider the problem to be on iTunes' end rather than my system's, which has by and large been a constant the whole time.

    Codec packs are notorious for causing iTunes problems.
    Try searching c:\windows\SysWOW64 for files with Quicktime in the name.
    There should be just two:
    Quicktime.qts
    QuicktimeVR.qtx
    If there are any other files or folders, try dragging them to the desktop ot any temporary folder.
    Does that make any difference.
    After doing that, do you have the latest Quicktime installed, if not update it.
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/win.html
    Earlier versions of Quicktime can upset iTunes.

  • ITunes 10.6.1 STILL won't play videos on Win7 64-bit

    This has been a problem ever since iTunes was "enhanced" to eliminate the need for QuickTime - instead of no longer requiring same, I can't play videos in anything BUT.
    I've been complaining about this for six months or more. When you start a video in iTunes, the audio starts but the video hangs and the progress bar at the bottom of the screen shows the '% complete' marker pinned to the RH side of the bar and the time is counting down on the RIGHT, not the left.
    Is anyone else having this problem??

    Bingo - your persistence is greatly appreciated. I wasn't even aware I had any plug-ins installed.
    Now ... where do I find them? The iTunes help mentioned visual effects, but making changes to the visualizer settings once I restarted iTunes in normal mode made no difference.
    Your next suggestion is eagerly anticipated.
    Update - the article suggestion looking for plug-ins in the following locations:
    C:\Users\username\App Data\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunes Plug-ins\
    C:\Program Files\iTunes\Plug-ins
    The first folder is empty (even with hidden files revealed); the second doesn't exist. I did find some plug-ins at C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes\Mozilla Plug-ins, but deleting those had no effect.
    Can iTunes be started in safe mode from the command line/a shortcut?

    Very great point, so after exhausting all other options (repair disk permissions and booting up with install disc and repairing the disk) with no success, I did just what you recommended and erased the whole hard drive and re-installed the OS.
    Ran into this problem a few times while attempting to erase the hard drive: the erasing/formatting would fail when the hard drive would randomly disappear from the list of drives!!!!
    And as you can suspect - even with a freshly wiped hard drive, it STILL is freezing!! It's not a hard freeze like everything stops working, or I get the grey screen of death...the beach ball just keeps on spinning, Command+Tab doesn't allow me to switch between apps, but I can move the cursor around, adjust window positions, etc.
    So here's what I'm suspecting - there is a hardware problem with the hard drive in that it will suddenly shut off, but leaving the OS still displaying, but of course not allowing the user to do anything. If this is the case, I'm assuming a replacement hard drive would be in order.
    Is this likely a hard drive problem, logic board problem, over-heating problem, or what? Any insight would be extremely helpful.
    Thanks again!!!

  • Mplayer or kmplayer won't play videos (solved)

    Mplayer hangs after video select and cannot be exited in Kde.
    Kernel 2.6.13.4-1.
    Must reboot to eliminate mplayer from kde display.
    Kmplayer does not play video either but can be deselected.
    Videos OK in kaboodle and noatun displays.
    Error message during shutdown..... for mplayer says....error in a02 init....

        As I understand the situation, runtime detection is built in to the mplayer pkg to permit all types of processors to respond to the options that are available for mplayer.
    It seems that my system can no longer perform under those runtime arrangements.
    Perhaps a later version?   mplayer-1.0pre7-1.pkg.tar.gz is the version downloaded from arch via pacman.

  • Firefox is slow and hangs watching Youtube videos. Safari is OK. What's the word, Developers?

    Since late Oct 2011, my Firefox had been hanging while watching videos on Youtube. Any mouse action while a video is playing causes Firefox to hang (spinning wheel).
    It turns out that I had caught the beta release of the new Gray Youtube interface - where the backgrounds of all youtube pages are gray.
    I got myself back to the old interface by deleting all Youtube cookies.
    I no longer have hangs. Page transitions are also much quicker, as was before.
    Is there anyone else who has experienced the "new" interface, and problems?
    If you do have the new youtube interface, but no problems, then I have more digging to do.
    Update Dec 2, 2011:
    I have the problem again now that Youtube has released their "new look" interface to everyone.
    The problem is generally slow Firefox responses to mouse actions while watching Youtube videos. Firefox will hang completely 2-4 minutes into any Youtube video. (The video does continue to play a-ok.) FF becomes responsive again when the video ends playing.
    Problem doesn't occur when I watch a youtube video right after starting FF after having "quit" it. Problem begins occur after FF has been running for a while (visiting other websites?) Is this a symptom of FF collecting some kind of crud in memory or disk?
    My old Safari (3.2.1) doesn't have any problems.
    As far as I can see, both Firefox and Safari on my system use the same Adobe Flash Player.
    So, this isn't a problem with Youtube, Flash Player, or my system, but a problem with Firefox (3.6.24) !?
    Anybody (FF developers) have any ideas? I want to keep using FF!

    Thanks Cor-el.
    The problem existed in safe mode as well.
    Changing Flash Player hardware acceleration had no effect.
    The problem is gone now, after getting the standard youtube interface back.
    What I'd like to know is whether any others who are unwitting testers of the new Youtube interface are experiencing problems, and, if not, what is their system? Which versions of Firefox and Flash Player are they using?

  • Iphoto won't play videos in slide show

    I've transferred a slideshow from an old macbook to a new macbook pro and for some reason the movie clips in the slideshow will no longer play.  Anyone else have this problem?  Anyone know of a solution?

    I have the exact same problem.  I upgraded from an old Core 2 Duo Macbook Pro to a new intel i7 Macbook Pro.  I did a migration using Time Machine and until now, everything seems to have transferred flawlessly.  However, any iPhoto slideshows with video clips now hang at the video clip and lock up the machine.  The slide shows still run fine on the old macbook prog.
    As far as the videos on the new mac, they will run fine using finder/quicktime.  They will run individually when selected in iPhoto.  However, they will cause the mac to freeze if I try and run a slide show or export the slideshow whenever it reaches the first video clip.
    I'm guessing its some kind of directory issue but I would like to recover the slide shows and be able to run them on this new, more powerful machine rather than created exported videos on the old mac or attempt to recreate the slideshows from scratch on the new machine.
    Any help would be appreciated and I'll try and use more than one syllable.

  • Are iMacs good for playing video games like Skyrim?

    I'm most likely to be getting a baseline iMac and I wanted to know if these computers are good for playing video games such as Skyrim before I get rid of my current PC. Also, are these games even compatable with a Mac. I've heard rumors that you can't play these kind of games on a Mac.

    So, I can interchange between the Mac OS and Windows at any time I want or did I understand that wrong? Is it a one or the other kind of deal?
    Yes, please read the Boot Camp FAQ for additional information.  You will need to buy a license of Windows 7 and once your get the iMac run an App called Boot Camp Assistant and follow the on-screen instructions to install Windows. Once you have you completed you will have both OS X and Windows 7 installed. BTW there is a Boot Camp forum if you have more detailed questions, that is where the Boot Camp and Windows guys hang out.
    Note: Whenever you load MS Windows on your Mac it then becomes a  native Windows machine when running Windows. This means like any Windows box it is susceptible to ALL the other issues Windows users have to put up with including viruses and other malware. The good news is even if your Windows partition becomes totally diseased that in no way affects the OS X partition or OS X.

  • Scene setRoot Play video

    In my JavaFx2.0 application I define a lot of groups with different videos. When I want to change the scene's group I use setRoot and then play video. But sometimes one video hangs up, is always the same video and it has the the cycleCountProperty set to MediaPlayer.INDEFINITE.
    My question is: Is it ok to play video after setRoot or I have to do it different?
    Here is the definition of the group:
    gPozos = new Group();
    mPozos = new Media(VIDEOPOZOS_PATH);
    mpPozos = new MediaPlayer(mPozos);
    mpPozos.setCycleCount(MediaPlayer.INDEFINITE);
    mvPozos = new MediaView(mpPozos);
    gPozos.getChildren().add(mvPozos);Here is the part that I change de scene group and play video (after playing another videos):
    scene.setRoot(gPozos);
    mpPozos.play();Thanks!
    Noelia

    It isn't the same video. I have different groups with different MediaViews.
    I want to change my answer because my problem is that I have 9 groups with 9 MediaViews with 9 MediaPlayers with 9 different videos (Media).
    At first I create all these because I couldn't change the Media of each MediaPlayer but now I think this is ridiculous.
    My videos hangs up and when I add logging I discovered that there were errors, for example:
    mLogo.setOnError(new Runnable() {
       public void run() {
          logger.severe(mLogo.getError().getMessage());
    });This print:
    [com.sun.media.jfxmediaimpl.NativeMediaPlayer@12f7431] "Error: medio corrupto": "Error: medio corrupto"
    So I was thinking that it would be better that I use only one MediaPlayer for the entire application, but I couldn't do this because JAVAFX 2.0 don't let you change the Media of one MediaPlayer!
    I was trying to change the Media of my MediaPlayer using Builders, but I couldn't.
    For example I tried this:
    mediaplayer = mediaplayerbuilder.media(media).build();
    mediaplayer.play();or this:
    mediaplayerbuilder.media(media).applyTo(mediaplayer);
    mediaplayer.play();or this:
    mediaplayerbuilder.media(media);
    mediaplayer.play();Sometimes the video doesn't start and sometimes start the video that I use for create the MediaPlayer.
    So...
    How can I play 9 different videos with only one MediaPlayer?

  • When trying to play videos I get the message "requested URL is not supported on this network" how do I fix this?

    I receive the error "requested URL is not supported on this network" when trying to play videos on my iPhone. Can you please advise how to fix this problem?

    Hi,
    You will need to re-instal iCal as an optional install from your OSX installer DVDs. Then run the Mac OS X 10.5.8 Combo Update.
    Best wishes
