C655D-S5041 Will Play CDs But Not DVDs

I'm running Win7x 64bit Home Premium, the CD/DVD drive is a TSScorp TS-L633Y ATA.  It plays CDs just fine, but when I load a DVD, it spins a bit and / or does nothing.  I've tried Windows Media Player / Classic and VLC, but it won't play DVDs. I checked the CD/DVD driver via my device manager, it is recognized (no yellow exclamation icons) and it says that the driver (6.1.7601.17514) is up today, even though it is dated 6/21/06.  I have tried uninstalling / reinstalling the device, but I always get the same driver coming back.  I checked the Toshiba website to see if there were any specific CD/DVD drivers that I could update to, but there doesn't appear to be anything else. I typically watch DVDs via home player, not my computer, but this is annoying. If anyone has worked through this issue, I'd sure like to hear from you.  My laptop has been rock solid otherwise, but this is really making me crazy...(!).  Thanks! -

Just as a follow-up to anyone else having this problem, I ended up going to https://tsstodd.com/eng/firmware/faq/ and running the firmware LiveUpdate utility.  It worked.  I can play CDs / DVDs without any problems now(!).

Not necessarily, the drive uses a different laser to read DVDs.

  • DVD Drive issues, plays CDs but not DVD data or regular - Satellite (unknown series type)

I tried to update the firmware but ran into some strange issues. First of all according to google, the drive is manufactured by Panasonic. Toshiba doesn't make their own drives? For this reason I wonder if it is improperly detecting the drive make/model.
Anyways I downloaded the firmware update for it, version 1.03. It is a MAT**bleep**A UJDA760 (going from memory, model may be slightly diff like UDJA). When I run the firmware update it doesn't detect the drive at all and says it is for a THINKPAD?? Weird...
Also, if you have a link to a guide for removing this drive I would appreciate it. I want to verify that windows is detecting the model/maker correctly. It is not one of the simple hotswap types, it looks like I have to remove at least the entire bottom of the laptop.
I am working on this for a client, I do tech repair on craigslist but my laptop hardware expertise is limited most of my experience is with desktops.

Typically if the optical drive can read CDs but not DVDs (or vice versa), there has been a hardware failure of the DVD or CD circuitry.  Drivers/firmware aren't going to solve the problem, only replacement of the drive.

  • Blu Ray CD/DVD+/-/RW Will burn CDs but not DVDs

    To whom it may concern:
I just purchased a pavillion dv7T laptop no more than 5 days ago and it will not burn DVDs. I've been able to burn CDs without a problem, both music and date. I've been able to play CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray discs without a problem. I've also been able to copy/rip DVDs on to my hard drive. However, when i try to burn DVDs it keeps giving me a failed/error message with both Windows Media and the Cyberlink software that came with the computer.
Does anyone know what the problem could be? I've talked to customer service (who's located in the middle east) twice and they've yet to help me fix the problem.

Try a different brand of media and if you are trying to burn DVD -R try +R or vice versa. Slow down the burn speed a notch. Make sure all other programs are closed before you try to burn.

  • Can burn CDs but not DVDs

My CD/DVD drive worked fine until 3 weeks ago.  I tried to burn home movies to DVD using Nero and it stopped burning.  I restored my computer to factory condition and reinstalled Nero.  No help.  I bought a newer version of Nero and switched from Sony DVDs to Verbatim.  No help.  Then I discovered that I can send files to my Drive E: and burn CDs but not DVDs.
I downloaded all the Microsoft updates.  I have recovery discs but that is a lot of work all over again when I'm not even sure it will help.  I have 2 external drives where I keep my files and backup but I would still need to setup email and reinstall my programs.
I was about ready to buy a new drive for the computer when I saw on the internet that other people have this problem too.  I would really rather get the drive I have working.

    Hi,
Sounds like hardware problem, not software. Please clean the lens first, please try:

  • After updating iOS on my iPod touch 4th gen my Philips speaker dock DC290B/37 no longer charges the iPod.  It will play music but not charge, is there anyway to find out if Apple is working on an update/fix?

after updating iOS on my iPod touch 4th gen my Philips speaker dock DC290B/37 no longer charges the iPod.  It will play music but not charge, is there anyway to find out if Apple is working on an update/fix?

    Try:
    - Reset the dock
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
Otherwise you are out of luck. Apple is not making any more update for the 4G.
Also check with Phillips. Maybe they have an firmware update available

  • USB super drive for a MacPro retina. It recognizes CDs but not DVDs.

I bought a new USB super drive for a MacPro retina. It recognizes CDs but not DVDs. I am in region 1 and my DVDs are all region 1. This is the second drive so the problem seems to be in the computer. The problem is the same with battery power or AC adaptor. I  downloaded Adobe flash before I bought the USD super drive. Could this be the problem? Any suggestions? Thanks.

  • DVD drive reads CDs but not DVDs

My DVD drive, CDDVDW TS-L633R, will read CDs, both music and data e.g. Epsom installation disc, but it will not read DVDs, videos or data e.g. MS Office installation disc.  I ran the CD/ DVD diagnosis software - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060/?wa=wsignin1.0 and the final message said that the disc (DVD) was not readable.

Means most likely the laser DVD is dead and the drive needs to be replaced.

  • 10.5.2 iTunes on Windows 7 x64 bit laptop - Quick Time will play videos but not iTunes

I'm hoping you can help, I've looked for a solution to this for a while now.
I store my itunes library on an external hard drive. I completed a clean install of x64 bit Windows 7 on my laptop - all went perfectly. Downloaded and installed the 64 bit version of 10.5.2 iTunes and located my library...the music plays fine but no videos. I opened iTunes in safe mode and it said that I needed the up to date version of Quick Time. Downloaded and installed that...no problems. Now my vidoes will play in the Quick Player but still not in iTunes! They apprear in the "Now Playing" pane but the timer doesn't move - even after pressing pause and play. Can anyone help me please? Do I need to open iTunes in 32 bit mode? If so, how do I do that in Windows 7? i can only find solutions for Mac's....
    Thanks in advance

I should have posted this earlier, but anyway. I restored my laptop to factory version after backing up any useful data, and the first thing I the laptop was restored was connect to the internet, download and install the latest version of iTunes. And Bingo! It worked.

    I'm writing from turkiye.
I've a problem about dvd rom. My dvd-rom can open CD but not open DVD.
What can be problem? Can you help me please?
    Thank you from now..

Sorry but your posting does not give us enough info for better problem understanding. Which DVDs you mean? Are you writing about original DVD movies or some self created movies, copies or what?
Please test it with different content (movies, saved files and so on) and let us know what happen exactly.

  • IMac plays commercial DVD/CDs, but not DVD-Rs

My iMac has been exuding random acts of weirdness over the last couple of months.
Today I find that my Superdrive won't accept DVD-Rs, blank or otherwise. Yes, I have the Matshita UJ-846 and I tried the usual fixes (safeboot, reset PRAM, changed DVD/CD settings to ignore, reset PMU, ran the diagnostic cd and even repaired the HD permissions.)
    Anyone got any ideas?

I don't think this has anything to do with brand. I could see a few disks not working, but dozens?
But to test your theory I tried some movies burned on Fujifilm and Maxell DVD-Rs and none of them worked.

  • Slow to import CDs but not DVDs

    Hi,
My Intel 20" 2.16Ghz is having trouble importing Cds at the normal speed.
For eg: a cd with 670mb of info took 19 mins to import. Dvds take very little time to import.
I called apple support: we reset the P ram etc. Booted into safe mode with all the peripherals unplugged, emptied the cache in my user account. Nothing helped.
The burner is a Pioneer DVR-K06. So I'm turning to the apple user community, if anybody can sort out this problem for me.
I will add, that on occasion the first import of a cd with take the "normal" amount of time. With subsequent ones taking forever. But this is not always the case.
    Anybody with any ideas?
    thanks Andrew.

Spoke to Apple Care and it turned out the burner was about to die. It was replaced under warranty, just before it ran out.

  • Reads CDs, but not DVDs

I just bought iLife '09 for my iMac G5. When I went to put the disc in, it sat in the computer, spinning for a few minutes, until it spit it out. I tried putting in DVD movies too, and it did the same thing, but it always recognizes CD's and blank CD's. What can I do to install my new program?

Try the follow, since the drive seems to be working to some extent.
Go to System Preferences +CDs & DVDs+ pane. Change something. In this case, a good one may be +When you insert a video DVD+; change it to Ignore. Then insert a movie DVD and note if it mounts but is otherwise ignored. As long as it is not ejected, you may have fixed the issue. You can set it back to *Open DVD Player* or whatever you want, and it should perform that action. Hopefully, it will also now mount the data DVD with iLife.
Please post back, if that does not help.

  • My CD/DVD drive reads CDs but not DVDs

    Hi All
I have a TSSTcorp CDDVDW TS-L633M DVD drive in my laptop and after about 6 months of use, the drive stopped reading/writing DVDs. It still reads CDs fine and occasionally will read a DVD (completely unprovoked and without warning...!) but is very temperamental and will randomly just stop reading a DVD. Often, the drive will eject and give an error message telling me to insert a disc. I'm not sure what to do.
I'm running Windows Vista 32-bit. I have tried running the Microsoft Fixit application, which recognises that the drive is failing to read DVDs but offers nothing more helpful than that and doesn't fix anything (despite its name...). I have been reading through a number of different forums and have found a range of advice: replacing the drive, uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers or editing the registry. What should I be doing to fix this problem? Naturally, I'd prefer not to have to replace the drive itself, but if that's the only way...
    Thanks in advance!
    Mangi
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

The registry thing only works if the drive is completely AWOL from the system so that it does not appear as a drive in "My Computer"....not your issue. The DVD and the CD use different lasers and it is not uncommon for one to go bad and the other not. You can check the function of the DVD by trying to boot from a bootable DVD. If you cannot the drive is bad and needs to be replaced. If it works sometimes and not others it could just need a good cleaning with a DVD lens cleaner.
