C655D-S5200: Resource Monitor says Percent Memory Used never exceeds 50%.

Planning to add memory to 3 GB installed. Resource Monitor says Percent Memory Used never exceeds 50%. Is this normal?  If so, why?  If not, what should I do?

If it's telling the truth, you don't need more physical RAM. We don't see anything else unusual in the measurements.
But that does seem suspicious. What happens to Hard Faults/sec as you increase the memory usage?
Can't hurt to read up on this. Maybe it will give you another idea on how to determine if there's something fishy in the measurement.
Here's an article on using Resource Monitor to measure memory from Tech Republic.

Mark Russinovich (of Microsoft now) blogged a bit on how Windows 7 uses memory.

As Mark suggests, you might want to set up Performance Monitor (perfmon -sys) to graph available memory using the Available Bytes counter.

  • All agentless monitored servers showing same percent memory used

I have 13 servers that are managed agentless via a proxy agent on the gateway server. I do this as when I had them set up to use the agent, the agent was consuming too much CPU on the servers. So, all appears to be fine, it is pulling in the percent CPU
usage and such, and recognizes the OS version and what not. The issue I have, is I set up a dashboard with a performance widget to track the percent memory used. All of my agentless monitored servers show the same percentage, and the percentage is also much
higher than what I see on the actual servers. So, it appears that there may be some form of roll up or something on the agentless servers, or it's taking the highest from the group, or I'm not drilling into the right counter or something. I have two widgets,
one that is performance and one that is performance object. The performance one grabs the object "Memory", counter of "PercentMemoryUsed", with no performance instance selected (although I have also tried "all"). The performance
object widget selects the same performance counter (Memory / PercentMemoryUsed /) and again have also tried "all" there as well. This allows the performance widget to graph/show the last value and maximum value, while the performance object shows
me the average sorted from highest to lowest. I have another server that is agent managed in the same list, that shows what appears to be accurate information...and there is also a performance counter for cpu usage that appears to have accurate data for all
of the above (agent and agentless). So, why am I seeing this issue with my agentless servers?

  • Why dose my activity monitor say I'm using more in tasks then in total?

Why dose my activity monitor say I'm using more in tasks then in total?
see how Guild Wars 2 uses 92.8% yet the total use is 12.03%, 86.54% is idle and the system is using 1.4% why is this?

    Cortess,
they’re two orthogonal percentage measurements. For the “% CPU” column in Activity Monitor, the total percent available depends upon your hardware: a single-core CPU has 100% available, a dual-core CPU has 200% available, and a quad-core CPU has 400% available. (The column might have been better labeled “% Cores”.) For the System/User/Idle at the bottom of the window, those represent a total of 100% of whatever your hardware comprises. For example, if you have a quad-core CPU, then your total System usage would be 400% of 1.43%, or a total of 5.72% in the “% CPU” column. Similarly, your total User usage would be 400% of 12.03%, or a total of 48.12% in the “% CPU” column. The percentage value for Guild Wars 2  might have been magnified because of its dependence upon your MacBook Pro’s discrete GPU.

  • Resource monitor says my hard drive is at 100% active time

According to the resource monitor my HP Vista desktop HD often goes to 100% active time. When this happens my computer grinds to a halt.  I have had the resource monitor open and saw this.  I have researched this on the net and i see that many people have this problem but i did not see any workable solutions. One answer was that it was a page fault problem and that i needed to change the word size, i did and it did not help.  Anybody have any ideas?

    Hi Ralph,
Have you isolated the offending process using Task Manager?
You could also try this MS Technet program to isolate the rogue process. This link has disk monitoring utilities that may help to isolate the culprit.

Hi, my MacBook Pro is running very slow. My activity monitor says high CPU usage by crash report. When i look at the system log MediaTek.winmax appears repeatedly with the word bug close by. I am not so good with computers (got this far by searching the Internet) and I am unsure what to do now. I've tried searching for it on the computer but cannot find it. • Activity Monitor - Java Virtual Memory Use is 16,333.00 TB.  How is this possible?

Activity Monitor:   Virtual Memory column -
Java Real Memory @ 330 MB
Java Virtual Memory was 16,333 TB.
    How could this be?
    Running:
    Safari
    Mail
    Pages
    Activity Monitor open
Safari was incredibly slow today, as it has been a lot lately, but inconsistently.  The other computers in the house had normal speed.  I'm not a tech person.  I attached a copy of the activity monitor - how it looks right now.  I appreciate your thoughts and suggestions.  Thank you.
    bottom half

As Kappy says, the virtual memory information is mostly meaningless except to developers, and most of them do not really care.
In this case the Java VM usage is most likely a math error on the part of either the operating system, or Activity Monitor (when a 64-bit number goes negative, but is then displayed as an unsigned value, it can look like what you are seeing; ignore it).
What you ARE interested in is "Real Memory" usage, and who is using it.  Look at those numbers in Activity Monitor.
If you want to see if pageout activity is affecting your performance, then start Applicaitons -> Utilities -> Terminal and run the command "sar -g 60 100" which will report pageout numbers once a minute for 100 minutes (adjust the numbers to suit your tastes).   Mostly zero means no pages outs.  Occassional spikes generally occur when starting an app or switching to an app which has been idle for awhile.  Sustained pageouts starts to indicate a problem.  High sustained pageouts means you could benefit from either having more RAM or running fewer concurrent applications.

  • I don't have many files, or many large applications on my MacBook Pro. 13'' with a 320 gb hard drive. However, Activity Monitor says I'm using almost half of it. What can I do to clean out the hard drive and keep only the files that I actually use?

I'm curious if there's a "defragging" or "cleaning" service available from Apple that I can use to take back some of my hard drive space.

  • How to increase Disk usage reported in Resource Monitor

    Hi,
As I understand, you want to increase the size of the root partition (where you installed Solaris) which resides in c1t0d0s0. I think it can be done using Concatenations from Solaris Volume Manager (SVM).
I have tried it in non root partition like /export/home and it is very easy.
    metainit -f d0 2 1 c1t0d0s7 1 c2t0d0s7 //this will create volume d0 as a concatenation
    growfs -M /export/home /dev/md/rdsk/d0 //this will grow the /export/home partition

  • What causes memory use of my program increase? (Write to Spreadsheet? Running in LV environment? External dlls? Waveform graphs?)

    Hi
I have attached a plot for the discussion here..
I am monitoring the memory usage by my VI thru calling a window's dll to keep checking that (Many thanks to Matt).
I saw raising slopes and flat (wow! First time I catch this, that's what I am expecting)
I am thinking where could there be a reason for memory growing up!
    What I did:-
    1. Mostly use queues (all limited # of elements) for parameters delivery between loops and between subVIs
    2. I close Obtained queue ref. every time I finish with it (only leaving a few keeping alive so they won't be killed)
    3. For all arrays I initialized with a fixed size array constant and do all jobs with Replace subset, Index Array and that In-place block.
Above are measures I intended to use to save memory.
However for a few points I think there might cause a memory grows, and I wish that someone can share with me your experience or give me an answer...
    1. Write to spread file:-- I keep using this to log data, events into harddisk, in my use I always append new logs/data to the existing file, however I keep doing it all the time throughout the run-time.
    2. Running my program in LV.exe -- I havn't compiled it yet. However when I was taking the plot's data, my PC is left with no one using it.
    3. There is a couple of external dlls running -- however it sounds to me from other's view point, external dll's resource doesn't count into Labview.exe. Since I am monitoring Labview's memory use, that couldn't be a source of the raising I see from this plot, right?
    4. Waveform graphs -- I am not sure whether this can be a problem. Everytime I feed data into a waveform control, I initialized a constant array and then replace elements into it, I don't think my data source is casuing any problem.
Can someone comment on my above descriptions of my program?

Write to spreadsheet file is a high level VI that opens and closes the file with every call. I would recommend to open the file once at the start of the programs, then append using lowlevel functions. Close the file after the program is done.
Have you done any profiling to see which subVIs shows the bulk of the memory use?
You might also turn off debugging to see if it makes a difference. Don't open the front panel of subVIs (and avoid functions that force the front panel to be in memory) unless they need to show something important to the user.
It would really help if we could see some actual code. Can you strip it down to the essentials that still show the problem?

Activity monitor says I have 1 -3% of System Memory free, yet CPU usage shows less than 10% total of all processes

I think you should review what you wrote. There is no question, hence, my reply. I can't tell by the AM listing what applications are using memory. You need to click on the Real Mem column once or twice to display in descending order.
Aside from what you see in AM, what exactly is your problem or perceived problem. You are very low on Free Mem at the moment the screen shot was taken. Those displays are not depicting your computer's instantaneous memory usage.

Understanding top output in the Terminal
The amount of available RAM for applications is the sum of Free RAM and Inactive RAM. This will change as applications are opened and closed or change from active to inactive status. The Swap figure represents an estimate of the total amount of swap space required for VM if used, but does not necessarily indicate the actual size of the existing swap file. If you are really in need of more RAM that would be indicated by how frequently the system uses VM. If you open the Terminal and run the top command at the prompt you will find information reported on Pageins () and Pageouts (). Pageouts () is the important figure. If the value in the parentheses is 0 (zero) then OS X is not making instantaneous use of VM which means you have adequate physical RAM for the system with the applications you have loaded. If the figure in parentheses is running positive and your hard drive is constantly being used (thrashing) then you need more physical RAM.
Adding RAM only makes it possible to run more programs concurrently.  It doesn't speed up the computer nor make games run faster.  What it can do is prevent the system from having to use disk-based VM when it runs out of RAM because you are trying to run too many applications concurrently or using applications that are extremely RAM dependent.  It will improve the performance of applications that run mostly in RAM or when loading programs.

  • Resource monitoring - memory usage

I typically use the system monitor on our SLES11 SP2 server (OES11 SP1). The server has 48 GB of memory as our backup software, Arkeia, loves memory. When monitoring resource usage during an Arkeia backup job, I notice that my memory usage remains around 9.4 GB. However, if I look at the process table, my Arkeia job is using well over 16 GB alone.
So the questions are : Why the difference? And is this a bug?
The one thing that comes to mind is the resource monitor is only looking at OS memory usage and is not adding "user process" memory. Any thoughts on this? Chris.

What exact tool(s) are you using to monitor Arkeia's memory usage, and the overall memory usage? Can we see their output please? I'd guess they're really looking at different things.

  • How do you interpret the graphs in resource monitor in Server 2012?

I cannot find what the green area verses the blue line mean in the resource monitor.  I have search the internet for quite some time and only find what the definition of terms are.  At first I though the blue line was peak measurements and the
green was average.  However, some times the blue is lower than the green.
So what does blue Vs green mean?

Not sure what you are asking.  What is being displayed is labeled in Resource Monitor. If you went into Perfmon you would be able to monitor the exact same things, only you could actually select the color. As with Perfmon, the values reflect an average
over the sample period. By default, Resource Monitor has a sample period of 1 second. You will also notice that the labels by the green and blue are different, indicating they are measuring different counters. For example, on the networking, the green is measuring
network IO rate and the blue is measuring percent of network utilized.

    Hi everyone,
I have WINEC7 running on the EVM ,i need to know how can i include my system resource monitor in the OS design and how can i capture it and see as a log file of CPU performance.

    Hi Mishab,
With the help of you code we can get the system memory status. Here I want to know two things.
1- how to know the memory status of my application.
2- how to know the CPU utilization (please give me example

  • Windows Resource Monitor update speed

Is it possible to change the update speed of Windows Resource Monitor (ie. the rate at which resource monitor re-draws the screen with the new sampled data, similar to what we have in Task Manager since ages)?
If the answer is yes, how?
If no, why there is no way? Currently it re-draws the screen every 0.5 seconds, so its extremely difficult to observe data if it keeps changing so frequently.

No, that's not what I am saying.
The performance monitoring tool uses a protocol to request data from all kinds of sources, including remote sources. This protocol is not a streaming protocol. I don't know the exact implementation, but from what I can tell it is a query / answer protocol.
There is a network layer in between, there is a service on the other computer communicating, that service is gather all kinds of health / process data.
Having to speed up the data logging frequency will produce a performance overhead on the other computer. That is probably one of the reasons that they never updated the protocol and the software to e.g allow you data acquisition frequencies in the 10s
    of milliseconds.
To make an analogy: suppose you have a family car, with the standard engine, gearbox, and supporting parts that go with it. If you want to make that car go a lot faster, a lot more is needed than allowing you to push the pedal down further. The engine needs
to be able to deliver more power, the gearbox must be able to transfer the pwoer, etc.
The windows infrastructure underpinning the performance monitor is not designed to transfer and collect data in millisecond speeds. There is no 'easy' way to make it go faster because it was never meant to do that, just like my family car was not designed
to drive a formula 1 lap. the great flexibility and variety of the data it can collect is one of the reasons it is not meant to do this.
