C7 Text-To-Speech switches language during message...

2 problems actually;
1. Translates text message body to Spanish.
The 'You Have xxx Text Message(s)' Intro is spoken in English (US). Then the message body is spoken in Spanish ES (MX)
The language indicator on the play screen says ES (MX) while the select language option has English (US) selected.
2. I cannot change the ES (MX) language setting via the phone. The language selection menu does not even show a listing for ES (MX).
Tried a reset and problem remains. Nokia USA has nothing i can find on the subject/problem.
Thanks

Well,
Now learning more about this - this can be about a missing launguage package and the voice packet "Kimmo".
Interesting thing that you cannot download such packets in anywhere in the Nokia support pages...

Strange. This means that if I get these files again, for next the E71 upgrade I will save these two files in a secure place. Just in case those are not anymore for easy download in the Nokia web site.
Others - if someone else happens to have those sis-files, I would appreciate you could share those with me.

  • Can I switch language to english, in a Spanish Leopard version?

I am intending to upgrade to Leopad finally, but i have an issue before do it so. The only copy I can get is a spanish version, and my powerbook comes with english version Tiger. Would I be able to switch language during installation, and keep english in the OS?

As Niel pointed out already, yes you can select the language you want during initial setup.
It's important to note also that you can change the language at any time you want afterwards, as well, using the language settings located in System Preferences > International. I routinely switch back and forth between Finnish and English with my OS X installations.

  • I have created PDF from hardcopy by using my scanner. After I run OCR option for my PDF by using Acrobat Pro 9. But "Text-to-speech" functionality of the PDF says that an error message comes up that says the page is empty when I turns on the read out loud

I have created PDF from hardcopy by using my scanner. After I run OCR option for my PDF by using Acrobat Pro 9. But "Text-to-speech" functionality of the PDF says that an error message comes up that says the page is empty when I turns on the read out loud option in Acrobat. Kindly help me to sortout this problems?

So I tried generating the same PDFs on two other computers that have Acrobat 9 Pro.  Results were reproduced.  The verdict is:
    - complex PDF files (that is, containing cross-references, tables of contents, and bookmarks) generated by Acrobat 9.x Pro are roughly 2-5x larger than the identical file generated with Acrobat 8.x Pro.
    - different PDF conversion settings make a negligable difference (less than 10% rather than 70-80%).
    - using the "Reduce File Size" or "Optimize PDF" option cuts the file size roughly in half, almost always resulting in a "image downsampling mask" warning message, which requires acknowledgement (that is a problem for batch processing or automation).
    - adding an Acrobat watermark to the file cuts the file size roughly in half.
    - just using Save As to another filename has no effect on file size.
    - generating the PDF in Acrobat 9 with links but no PDF bookmarks still results in the inflated file size.
    - generating the PDF in Acrobat 9 without any links or bookmarks results in approximately the same file size as the Acrobat 8 PDF with full links and bookmarks.
It appears that Acrobat 9's manner of adding links is what's bloating  the files, and in my case it's probably not related to images or image resolution/print quality.  It's a shame, because Acrobat 9 seems to have made some  improvements to the Review Tracker interface, and a few other bells and  whistles which I haven't really gotten around to exporing yet.  But  unless I find a way to keep my links and the PDF file sizes comparable to what I was  getting with Acrobat 8 Pro, it looks like I'm going to stay with Acrobat 8.

I don't think so, you have to change it in the system preferences.  You can ask Apple to add this via

That's weird, it doesn't seem that anybody else has reported an error like that (that search finds, anyway). Usually a bus error means a connection to an external device - do you have speakers or headphones connected via a USB connection by any chance? Try swapping out other speakers, or using another USB port if it is a USB connection. Otherwise, try switching from the headphone port to the line out port or vice versa and using the other instead to see if it helps.
Aside from that, I'd just suggest calling Apple. If your Mini is new then you should be covered to call support and get their help - there's a small chance there's a hardware fault in the Mini and if that's the case you want to know about it sooner rather than later.
Sorry I couldn't be more helpful than this.

  • What's wrong with Text to Speech

I just discovered strange behavior of Text to Speech under 10.5.7. No matter which System Voice is used it reads "Y" or "y" as {:i} and not as {waɪ}. In the International setting System language is set to "English" and Formats to "United States".
Even stranger is that when it reads "Y Y", it reads correctly +{waɪ waɪ}+, but "y Y" or "Y y" it reads +{:i :i}+. So, just the uppercase and lowercase makes a difference?
It can be tested easily in the Terminal by the command *say "Y"*...
Do somebody know what causes this behavior? I've tried this on all my 3 machines (10.5.7) and it's the same everywhere.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions:
Good catch! It sure looks (sounds) like a bug.
I just tested it on my 10.5.7 box and
    Y, y and e
    all sound identical.
And yes, "YY" comes out correct.
You can file a bug report here:
    https://bugreport.apple.com/
However, "y" is pronounced properly in words, hence the YY being correct.
It might be considered that the singular "y" is pronounced "E" but I would argue against that.
    Check here for MW's pronunciation:
    http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/y
Which agrees with what we both consider the correct English pronunciation of "y"
Playing devil's advocate, however, while "y" is pronounced "why" as in "supply" it is also correctly pronounced "e" in words such as "happy" and most words beginning with "y" so there is a counter argument.
Still, on 10.5.6, "y" is always pronounced as in the MW example.

    ok then,
thanks everyone for your answers. i'll drop my ubuntu as soon as i get enough spare time.
@peart : i'm confident most hardware should be functional, as it is already using other distros. Except for my nvidia graphics… (it seems to be unstable lately, maybe because of nvidia drivers and/or recent kernels… it can't be worse anyhow.)

  • Nokia 5530 text to speech feature help

Its mentioned in the specifications for 5530 that it has a text to speech feature. Can anybody tell me how to use it..???

    emailed Nokia and here is their reply;
Thank you for emailing Nokia Care.
It is true that the technical specifications does list the Text to speech as one of the applications installed on the Nokia 5530XM. You may refer to your user guide under the term 'Message reader' as well. Please open your applications folder and browse for your Text to speech folder.
Settings are required prior to using the feature as in the language, voice and the voice settings. Upon completing these settings, you can simply pick up a message from your inbox, select Options and Read.
Should you not have the software in your phone, please download it from the following link. If the Nokia 5530XM is not listed, you can select any of the other XM phones but series 60 like the 5800XM
    http://europe.nokia.com/get-support-and-software/download-software/text-to-speech#
so downloaded software and voice package but still no joy-nothing in the extended user guide on the Nokia web  site
the key appears to be the 'text to speech' icon in the applications folder which I don't have on my 5530 phone ( very helpful chap at CFW cant find it either)
Come on Nokia help us out here

  • Using text-to-speech technology in my web app

    Hi all,
I work for a small web development company and we're curently in the process
of building a web app for foreign language learners. One of the features
we'd like to have is speech synthesis. We immediately thought about
incorporating the technology developed by Apple into our app, but
I want to make sure we're allowed to do that in the first place.
Basically, here's what we want to do: we have a simple application
where users can learn new vocabulary. Every word saved by a user
can have a few example sentences (also posted by our users).
We could then generate audio files from these sentences using
"say" command (which is built into the Mac OS) and put
    them on our website.
If you're familiar with Apple's policy on such uses of their text-to-speech
synthesis, I'd be grateful if you could clarify it for me.
    Thanks.
PS: it's my first post here, so if I chose the wrong forum, please let me know where
    I should post it.

  • Text-to-speech no longer working in any PDF apps in Mac 10.8.5.

Text-to-speech is no longer working in any PDF apps in Mac 10.8.4/5.  Does anyone know the software component that passes highlight text over to the speech synthesiser?   How is this process different in PDF's compared to any other text format?
So far I have tried Preview, Skim, PDFView, Safari, Evernote and Adobe Reader with the result: silence.  The only defference being Adobe Reader which speaks the name of the document and not the highlighted text.  I've re-applied the Mac OS10.8.5 como-update, fixed prefs, ran FSCheck and changed user.  I've tried every method of triggering the text-to-speech function (including custom scripts). Text-to-speech works perfectly in every other respect exept when working with PDF's. When Maveriks arrives I will do a clean install and rebuild my data manually which I'm pretty certain will fix the problem but it would be extremely rewarding to find an actual solution and learn something in the process.

Rawr! I got it to work, sort of. I think I tried so hard because I hated the thought of using alsa-oss. And I discovered a couple bugs in spd-conf! Does anyone care? lol
Basically, I redid my TTS-related configs & put them under ~/ instead of /usr/share, and ran "festival --server" & "speech-dispatcher -s" as a normal user. I also added myself to the "audio" group somewhere along the line, but I don't think that was the issue.
I'm almost afraid to reboot, because, although speech-dispatcher can be started at boot-time through rc.conf's DAEMONS array, I don't think festival can---at least, not in the same way as it can on distros that have the script /etc/default/festival. I'm about to see if I can track down that file, and hope I don't break everything somehow.
KTTSMgr still doesn't see any synthesizers, but I got past the "dummy module" message. Now I'm hoping I'll get some help from someone who actually knows what to do (as opposed to me).
    Take care, all
    H
P.S One small complaint: Although my speechd.conf specified port 6561, speech-dispatcher's tests showed that it was looking for a connection on port 6560 first, before scanning to find the real port. I had to change to port 6560 to stop the behaviour, even though I never customized the port number in the first place.
