Cable cutting

Hi i like to know when is Verizon fios going to let those customer that have data only still have the great service of fios like those that have a stb box. Most people are using there Smart TV as a way to watch TV but do not like to paid for the cost of cable TV. Comcast is in the process of letting there customer us the Internet to enjoy service like the use of streampix at a small price like that of netfliex. Will Verizon have any plan to move to that forum.

It's something Verizon has been known to be working on for some time, as a provider agnostic, over the top service. So far nothing has really materialized of any significance.

have u used the CD that came with the iPod because that does a lot for helping with reconization of the iPod.
but your biggest problem is that your using a Pentium not mention Windows and Acer! are you that cheap???
I'm going to get an iBook G4 buy December because their cooler processors(don't say a thing about speed because that would make you technologically challenged) and their wonderful OS that doesn't crash unless you find a way to make it and reliable software.

  • Fios installed but now cable is now fuzzy

Have FIOS internet and phone, but the cable is with a separate company. FIOS internet, after an initial problem, is working but the cable is now fuzzy and the picture separates into little pieces. The cable guy came out and added a booster, causing the FIOS internet to go out. When we removed the cable booster, the internet was up again. We realized that the FIOS installer used a splitter for the FIOS router and for the cable, cutting into the cable line and using its juice. The result: the cable is now notworking right. Verizon is giving me the run around. Any suggestions? I am very upset at the shoddy work Verizon performed by using the equipment of another utility to get their system operating. Since we need our cable, I am seriously considering going phone, internet, and cable all with the cable company and dumping Verizon. My daughter warned me about the problems they had with Verizon FIOS (they couldn't use their phone and internet at the same time), but I unfortunately didn't listen.

If it's an easy run then you could just go and get a length of RG6 coax and connect it between the ONT and the router after removing the connection from the ONT to the splitter and the cuurent connection that's going to the router.

  • Cutting ribbon from 8600 Mac/ will it still work?

    Hi all
I can I cut a long SCSI ribbon in half for use on another Mac? All I need is a long enough piece of ribbon with connectors to attach my SCSI drive to a SCSI PCI card.
    Thanks
    Jim

I've cut ribbon cables to shorten them. You must get a clean cut that goes straight through and doesn't bend the wire tips at an angle, making them prone to shorting (as Grant pointed out). A utility knife with a new blade will slice right through the insulation and wires. Stand the connector vertically and carefully move the blade (top to bottom) through the cable, cutting it flush with the edge of the plastic.

  • Megaworks 550 Remote Control Extension Cable??

Hi , does anyone know where i can get an extension cable for the remote control of Megaworks 550..it must be a 9-pin Mini Din but after hours of internet searching did not find anything..most are up to 8-pin.
I Live in UK but if i can get one from abroad no problem.
    Thanks..
P.S Wired remote!!! come on... :smileyindifferent:

    ello Vatman,
I have just registered + saw your request 4 the extn cable,I am
looking 4 the same thing. I thought of having the cable cut +
a new cable soldered or joined inbetween but did not really want to
do that until I got another wired remote but they wont supply them (yet?).
    I rang Keene Electronics 0870 990 9000 &
they asked for an email [email protected] or a
letter giving as much info as pos preferable with a
photo and measurements. I have not got round to doing that as
yet.Hope this is of some use,let me no if u have got the

  • Analog multichannel shielded cable

We need to connect a multichannel sensor to our intermediate board (before NI xseries digitizer). The intermediate board will be custom designed, it can have virtually any connector.
Sensor has 32 channel connector (mating is MS3116F20-41S). We could not find a good cable for it (see signal description below), so we need to make a custom connection.
Our idea is to take a good cable, cut it and solder a connector for the sensor on free end.
Signal from the sensor: 0.5 us, pulses 30uV -  5 mV amplitude with ~1 V bias offset, up to 10 kHz rate.
Sensor is a ~100 Ohm resistance, so current is 10 mA average on each channel.
Signal is AC coupled, amplified, integrated on our board, so pulse shape change is not important. Distance is up to 1 m (3 feet). We can not place ac coupling and amplifier closer to the sensor.
Pulses on all channels happen at the same moment, cable should not allow cross-talk at least up to 1/1000.
    Surrounding environment is pretty noisy.
The questions are: what type of shielding is recommended, should each channel be individually shielded?
    What cable would you recommend?
    Thanks in advance!

    Alexander_Sobolev,
Sounds like a challenging measurement problem!
I would probably use a multi-pair twisted cable with each pair individually shielded.  Something like Alpha Wire 6019C.  Since your cable is short and the currents are small, you could probably use a cable with smaller wires than that example.  Apparently the sensor outputs share a common or ground since the connector does not have enough contacts for a pair of conductors per channel.  I would probably ground one wire of each pair  at both ends and ground the shields only at one end.  If ground loops are a possibility, build some isolation into the intermediate board.
At the intermediate board I might use a DB-50 connector with a metal shell.  Ground as many of the pins as you can and connect the shell to the shields.  Put good mechanical supports on the connector on the board and use jack screws to hold the cable to the board.

  • Re: Mifi and Charging - does this work for charging the iPad?

I found the following post on here - but it is too old for me to reply directly to it - however, this was a very good post and it worked for me and I would really like to get in touch with mikebob to see if the same thing would work for charging the iPad - his ideas really work. And does he or anyone know how to charge the iPad from batteries?
    thanks a lot

I finally managed to figure out the proper cabling to get the Verizon Mifi 2200 to charge using a generic USB charger. To recap the problem... The mifi device will only charge when using the supplied micro usb charger, or when connected to a computer USB port using the supplied micro USB cable. When connected to a computer, the device reverts to it's connected data mode, which turns off the wifi ssid broadcast and requires the Verizon access manager application to be launched. Most third party chargers will not work... including most 12V lighter to USB adapters, and most backup battery solutions.
Here is what is going on... Per the USB specification, Pins 1 and 4 are 5V power and ground respectively. Pins 2 and 3 are data+ and data-. In most chargers, pins two and three are tied via a pullup resistor to the 5V line. If you measure the voltage on 2 and 3 you will see around 3V, equivalent to a logic high state. This has something to do with allowing the device being charged to identify whether it should be in a fast or slow charging mode. More importantly, it is what the Apple iPod expects to see . So, anyone wanting to build generic USB chargers will probably implement this way in order to tap into the single largest device market around. Unfortunately, the mifi does not like the logic high on pins 2 and 3. I haven't yet sorted out why, but when it sees logic high on pins two and three, it refuses to go into charging mode.
The solution is to use a cable where pins 1 and 4 (5V and GND) are carried straight through. Pins 2 and 3 need to be disconnected from the charging source and shorted together at the Mifi end. If this was a miniUSB instead of a microUSB, it would be what is called a "charge only" cable. I have not found any vendors yet for a charge only microUSB cable so I went ahead and performed surgery on a standard microUSB cable. I took a standard USB cable, cut it and then connected it to a microUSB connector from an old Motorola bluetooth headset charger.   Interestingly, the microUSB connector from the Moto charger  already has pins 2 and 3 shorted together internally so all I had to do was connect 5V and ground and heat shrink tube the whole thing. With this cable I can charge the mifi from any generic USB port, including those on 12V lighter adapters, and rechargeable backup batteries. In addition, I can also connect the Mifi to my laptop to charge while continuing to access the Mifi via wifi.
Only word of caution...  You really need to connect the Mifi to your computer using the standard data cable on occasion, say once per month.  The reason is that it is only in this mode that you will receive notifications of S/W updates and/or the need to update your PRL. (preferred roaming list).

Connect to iTunes on the computer you usually Sync with and “ Check for Updates “...
If an Update Appears Install it... if not... you are up to date for your particular Device...

  • AddressBookManag 100% CPU after 10.5.8 update

After I installed I noticed that this process was consuming nearly 100% of CPU capacity.
Restarting and logging into a "clean" admin user did not show this but logging in under my own user showed the activity appearing after a few minutes.
Address Book is set to open at login and I use MobileMe with automatic syncing.
Turning off mobile me automatic synchronisation did not do anything however if I unplugged my ethernet cable (cutting off my network connection) the AddressBookManag stopped.
Setting it too manual stops it recurring but do a manual sync creates the problem again.
I am currently behind a corporate proxy however and the interaction between this and Mobileme I think this is the problem but I don't recall this occurring with 10.5.7. Essentially AddressBookManag should recognise it is failing to connect and not simply run wild will it fails to connect.
If I disconnect my macbook from the company network and use my iphone for internet tethering there is no problem.

    Hi, Roger.
I've noticed this behaviour as well and it goes back to before 10.5.8. Generally it goes away after a bit. My guess is that AddressBookManager is actually busy doing some housekeeping.
You could try deleting ~/Library/Application Support/Address Book/ABPerson.index which should result in a rebuilding of the Address Book database the next time you search for an entry.

  • G5 Dual 2.0 with 17" CRT Apple monitor

    Hi guys,
I just got a G5 Dual 2.0 and I realised that it can't be connected directly to a 17" Apple CRT Monitor. I hence purchased a DVI - ADC adaptor. Upon installing this gadget, when I pressed the power switch on the CRT monitor, it lights up, but the display remains off. When I released the button, the light goes off too. I don't really understand it. I am using two monitors at the same time. When I switched on the system preferences, I can see 2 displays active, I just can't get the other display to "light up"
    Please advise. Thank you.

A normal CRT connects via a DVI to VGA adapter. The Apple CRT uses ADC.
The Apple and Dr. Botts DVI to ADC adapters do not provide the RGB analog signals needed for a CRT monitor. The Gefen adapter does provide these signals but its power supply is not designed for the extra power a CRT display needs. See <http://www.applefritter.com/node/4008>
In the link, one person was using the Gefen adapter, but the power supply was getting VERY hot. Buying the Gefen adapter and a new, bigger, power supply, would be the easiest way to get things to work. The only cable cutting would be moving the cable from the Gefen power supply to the new power supply. That would just be a two wire cable. If you can find the matching plug for the Gefen power supply, you wouldn't have to use the Gefen power cable, but make your own, which is probably better because Gefen might be using wires too small for the extra current.
It would be easier to get another display. A used 17" CRT with a VGA connector should be cheap.

  • HDHomerun Won't Connect Wirelessly

I bought the HDHomerun Network Dual Tuner for HDTV to broadcast TV on my MacBook Pro.  For some reason I cannot get the MacBook to connect to the device using my AirPort Express Router.  It works if I hook up the HDHomeRun via an ethernet cable. Firewall is off.  Help!!

I just opened a HDHOMERUN. My set up here is a Mac Mini (2012) and XBMC GOTHAM running on it for the media center. My hope is that I will eventually integrate the tuner into XBMC and have one nifty interface for everything media oriented. I forked out some cash for the EyeTV software (Tunes in the channels, gives a gorgeous EPG/DVR for the HDHOMERUN. It's excellent, by the way. However I have the HDHOMERUN setup across a long room, 25 feet from the Mac. It flawlessly, wirelessly transmits the cable signal over my home network to the EyeTV software. Viewing this way is flawless, so far. I have now caused my eyes to glaze over - caused from reading blogs and forum tips an how to EXACTLY integrate the HDHOMERUN into XBMC. Scripts, Python, .STRM files, and holy crap, what are these people talking about? So for now, my cable cutting route has been a little less than perfect, but I am still enjoying the endeavor and the cost savings. More specifically to your question, The HDHOMERUN MUST BE CONNECTED VIA ETHERNET. It says so in the quick start guide mine came with. I have the HDHR4.

  • Replacing Internal DVD Drive with HDD in Mac Mini?

Has anyone tried replacing the internal DVD drive with a hard drive, giving you TWO internal hard drives? I think you need a cable to match up the SATA connectors. Then you could use a USB external enclosure for the DVD.
    Thanks.

Very interesting, thanks el Duque. Too bad MCE doesn't make a carrier for the Mac Mini. I wonder if one for a Macbook Pro can be easily modified to fit?
I have just learned that the SATA connector on the logic board for the optical drive in Macbooks and the Mini is called a "Slim-SATA" connector. Instead of the power side of the connector having 15 pins, it only has 6, with both types of connectors having a standard 7-pin data side. Both power and data hook-ups are achieved in a single connector -- a power side and data side.
Since the ports on 2.5" hard drives are "standard" SATA connectors, AND they don't match up to the logic board's connector location (like with the connector location on the optical drive), a cable is needed to run between the HDD and the logic board connector.
Unfortunately, such a cable is not available -- yet. Instead, one has to be fabricated out of two types of SATA cables -- a Molex 4-pin to SATA 15-pin power cable and a combination cable that looks like this:
    http://www.byteccusa.com/product/SATA/SATA-XP118/SATA-XP118.htm
The fabrication involves replacing the molex 4-pin power end of the combi-cable with the SATA power end of the molex 4-pin to SATA power cable (cutting and soldering). The BIG question now is whether a HDD will work with just the two-wire power cable (of the combi-Sata cable) that an optical drive normally uses? Anyone know if it will? Thanks.

  • Could my current mac with the Mini DisplayPort use thunderbolt displays? Even any other thunderbolt technology?

i am in the market for a new desktop computer, iMac or new Macpro if coming soon and priced right. i want two displays and I want my current Macbook Pro end 2008 with the Mini DisplayPort to be able to us a hunderbolt display. is this possible?
    thanks

It will work, but only as a display – obviously you will not have access to the hub and daisychain functions.
I don't see that would work... Plus, if it were possible, I would think a company would utilize that for marketing leverage to appeal to more users with only the older mDP cpu's.  In this case, that's not what is happening.  So I don't believe it will work like that.  Typically, a company wouldn't make specific statements (ex "attaching to any Thunderbolt enabled device"), if it was Not a requirement to work.
Then... on the technical side of it...
The TB cable / signal is a (new technology) Muxed signal of both PCIe and DP data.  Without the TB chipset / hardware on the host machine, it can Not communicate properly down the Thunderbolt cable and to any TB device.
As you can see in the cable cut-away... it's NOT just a matter of adding individual DP lines along with some individual PCIe lines and wrap it up in a single cable.... where you can choose just to use only the DP lines.  Nope... this is highly improbable and suggests that using an OLD (non-TB) computer will NOT work at ALL, if connecting to a TB display or any TB device.

  • NBA League Pass

So im trying to watch the nba league pass on my apple tv and it seems to be buggy. 1st off why is it when I try to switch between games that it starts back at the beginning of the game. Why doesnt it either pick back up where I left off or back to live action. 2nd, how come there isnt a option to view more then one game at a time like it is on the computer? 3rd, maybe this is a nba decision but why is some games audio only? Who the **** wants to listen to a game when you can watch it. I dont want to hear about Kobe or Lebron scoring 30 points, I want to see him do it!!! 3rd how come there isnt a option to view more then one game at a time.

NBA blackout rules may be the problem or at least I consider them a major problem. The rules apply to all versions: Apple TV, computer version, and mobile for iOS devices. The NBA should make this much clearer!
This appears to be the case: they will demand your location and use it to blackout any games that are being televised locally including cable (espn, tnt, etc.). This pretty much does away with the possible use to "cable cut".
I'd like to use my iPad to watch games while also watching tv with the wife (she doesn't watch sports). Would pay for this but most of the games I'm interested in would be blacked out: local team and one other team that is often on national cable channels.
Believe most folks assume "blackout" applies to the home team that doesn't sell out that game. This has been the rule for over the air broad casts of nfl games. NBA expands on that significantly.

  • Dual Core Power PC G5 and the ADC 17" Clear Display

Anyone know of any incompatibilities between the two? I am using the Apple DVI to ADC Adaptor and when I turn it on I see nothing on the display. Ideas anyone? The display is the 17" Clear see through CRT Display.

The Apple and Dr. Botts DVI to ADC adapters do not provide the RGB analog signals needed for a CRT monitor. The Gefen adapter
