Many times my computer takes too long to connect to new website. I have wireless internet (time capsule) and I am running a pretty powerful real time financial work program at same time, what is the best solution? Upgrading speed from cable network? is it a hard drive issue? do I only need to "clean out" the computer? Or all of the above...not to computer saavy.  It is a Macbook Pro  osx 10.6.8 (late 2010).

Almost certainly none of the above!  Try each of the following in this order:
Select 'Reset Safari' from the Safari menu.
Close down Safari;  move <home>/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db to the trash; restart Safari.
Change the DNS servers in your network settings to use the OpenDNS servers: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220
Turn off DNS pre-fetching by entering the following command in Terminal and restarting Safari:
defaults write com.apple.safari WebKitDNSPrefetchingEnabled -boolean false

No eSATA to USB. Just a SATA/IDE to USB adapter. Google SATA/IDE to USB adapter and you will get tons of links to buy them. Most likely your local computer electronics store has them, although they might be more expensive buying locally than online.
I have several. You can get either USB 2, which what I recommend, or USB 3. USB is backward compatible so a USB 3 adapter will work on a USB 2 port and a USB 2 adapter will work on a USB 3 port. Backward compatible in both directions.
I suggest a USB 2 type because there have been some problems with certain USB 3 devices, the USB 3 interface used isn't all that good in those certain devices. USB 3 is still fairly new where as USB 2 has been around for over 10 years.

  • How will an external Hard drive designed for the macbook Pro work with my White Macbook?  My  white macbook has a Firewire 400 and the G-Tech HD has a 800 to 400 compatible cable for the firewire.

I am asking this because I want the G-Tech Hard drive  says that it is designed for the macbook pro.  Yet, I want to back up faster with by using my firewire 400 which is not an option on the one designed for the white macbook that does not have a firewire (only a USB port.)  The G-Tech Hard drive comes with the 800 to 400 compatible cable and has 5400 RPM with 750 GB.  Also, I've heard that laptops with low battery (mine all the time)  won't have the power for a bus powered Hard drive (as in no ac plug in adaptor.)  Can I just plug in my laptop?  Any one know the answers from experience with this hard drive?

As far as I know, if a harddrive works with a Macpro, it should work with the Macbook: if your Macbook is low on power, plug in the AC adapter
If your Macbook has a firewire port, then it should be fine. BUt i would do somemore research first.

    Hi,
For many 17" (or 17.3") machines such as Envy 17, dv,  Pavilion 17 .... you can add a second HDD (my old loan dv7 has two HDD's and my current loan Envy 17 also has 2 HDD's). You would need the following kit:

  • Hard drive not recognized - cable?

When I try to boot up my computer, I get a flashing folder with a question mark on it. However, when I move the hard drive to another computer and then boot up, there are no problems at all. Would I be correct in guessing that it's the hard drive cable at fault here? Has anyone had this problem, and if so, how did you fix it?
    Nathan

has any one resolve this issue or know what is the fault.
this seems like a manufactory fault. as a few people has the same fault,
as I treat my macbook like a new born baby. I take good care of it.
I have the same problem with 13 macbook pro unibody . late 2009. no apple care. lil bit over a year old
My wife has the same specs macbook not the pro,
so i swap out harddrive and memory. the drive from the faulty macbook pro worked fine in my wife macbook so is the memory cards.
I took the macbook to apple store today. the apple agent was really helpful as usual. Nothing beats apple good customer service.
I was told it looks like the the cable that connects from the drive to the logic board is the fault. so he placed an order for the cable. was told as a good will gesture they will only charge me for parts. which is about £12 for cable.
So fingers cross I hope the cable is the fault. as i forgot to buy the apple care before the year was up.
but then again for a lil bit over a year macbook pro with this fault should not me my fault.

There is another option if the Macbook will start up in Target Disk Mode.
Restart the computer while holding down the T key. If you see the firewire symbol moving around on the screen you can connect this one to another one in TDM. You will need a suitable cable to connect the two Macs.

  • Hard drive data cable issues

I have a 2010 13" Macbook pro. It was refurbished when bought in 2011, and I've had it since May of 2011. The first time I had the flashing folder with a question mark was about a year after it was bought in summer 2012, and the data cable connecting the hard drive and motherboard was replaced. I have now had the issue two more times, once in March 2013 and again March 2014. All three times I had the flashing folder with a question mark, and all three times the data cable was the issue. While I am glad the issue has not been the hard drive itself, I am really peeved that I keep having this issue, and have to be without a computer for at least a week while it's being diagnosed and repaired.
I read some other forums and the cable seems to be a fairly common issue, but I am wondering why I have had this issue 3 times in the last year and a half. I keep my computer on a cooling pad because I thought the heat caused the problem the first time, and I take very good care of it. Does any one have any ideas what could cause the data cable to have issues? Could it be something I am doing, or have I just been unlucky and gotten faulty cables? I don't want to have to replace this every year, it's getting a little ridiculous.

you guys can tell if that is true?
i did a search and i found that ones: i am not sure if is original ones and if will works on my mac book, can you guys help me with that? they said that foxconn is apple original and will solve my problem.

  • SATA cable - cause hard drive errors?

    Hi,
Apologies for yet another post...I've been inundating you with questions in the past week!
My iMac is in for repair, after having the flashing question mark appear and not being able to see the drive in disk utility. Tech Tools scan also showed about 30 errors on the surface scan of the drive. The repair place has just called and left a message that the problem was the SATA cable, and that they've fixed it with a new cable. My question is - would a faulty SATA cable cause errors on the drive? I'm guessing they haven't even checked that, they've just got the drive communicating again....I have very little faith in this place, I must admit.... but just thought I'd ask the question here..
    Thanks in advance.

If you already replaced the hard drive you should know where the cables are and where they go. One is the SATA power cable that goes directly to the power supply and the other is the SATA data cable that goes to the motherboard.
So disconnect the data cable from the HDD and from the motherboard and buy the same length cable at any PC shop or web site. SATA data cables are standard and nothing unique. Just remember where the motherboard connector is.
Freezes can be caused by lots of different things and I'd investigate those before replacing the data cable.
Have you run the diagnostics on the RAM, which is a frequent cause of freezes? Have you reseated the RAM modules in their slots? Do you have the latest drivers, eg video driver, for your hardware?
Are there any updates to your apps and software?
Do the freezes happen when you're running a specific app? Since this seems to happen on the Linux partition is something not fully compatible with Linux..?

  • Is a hard drive faster on a shorter IDE cable?

    Hello,
I am considering connecting my main hard drive with a 24" IDE cable rather than using my 18" cable which I used previously. (The IDE cable therefore will be 6" longer.) Will this slow down the performance of the hard drive? My hard drive is a 40 GIG, 7200 RPM hard drive.
Also, if you configure a hard drive as a "slave" (rather than "master") does this reduce the performance of a harddrive?
    Thanks,
PS: Both my 18" IDE cable and my 24" IDE cable are 40 pin IDE cables with 80 conductor wires rated for ATA/133. The difference is in the length only.

I have a shocking one for you. I just measured the
ribbon which used to be in my Beige G3/300MT and it
is about 140 cms long (For the normal people here, that's 52 inches) (purchased in a PC store),
and not only. It is a 40-wire cable, not an 80.
I used this to be able to connect and disconnect
everything with the case completely open (I hate
    short wires.....).
This was connecting my "burner" and my storage hard
drive (master & slave) to one of the channels.
My emergency startup drive connected to the second
IDE channel and installed inside the case (near the
motherboard), and my main startup drive is a SCSI.
I haven't noticed any particular problems with speed.
Note that my storage drive was only accessed to copy
files onto it, not as a working directory, and
therefore mounted in that position as a slave on
    purpose.
The IDE startup drive had a much shorter ribbon, also
    a 40-wire cable.
The Sony burner used to clock just slightly over a
minute to burn an audio CD at 52x (yes, I know....it
is a little suicidal, but I like it), and got stuck
every now and then, but hey, what's life without a
    few coasters?
The performance was excellent, and I think the flaws
were due mostly to the Beige, rather than the drive
(the drive still lived in my B&W until I got a DVD
burner), and now sits in a drawer awaiting new
    assignments).
I also tried using the same ribbon in my B&W, just to
connect an extra drive (I didn't have any other
ribbons left), and it worked flawlessly.
    cheers

  • Using Time Capsule as an external hard drive with ethernet cable, disabling airport, using wifi from laptop

Okay, first of all, I admit right off the bat that I should have bought an external hard drive.  Now I am stuck with a 3TB Time Capsule that I want to tie to my laptop via ethernet cable, without having the Time Capsule disable my laptop's current wifi.  So, I want to be able to back up my laptop (using the ethernet cable and Time Machine) to my Time Capsule drive and still be able to be surfing the internet as if I didn't have Time Capsule at all.
My MacBook Pro is OS 10.7.5.
    Any thoughts are much appreciated.

    This is not difficult.
You need to work out one issue beforehand..
What IP address range does the computer get from the wifi router.. ?
If you get 10.0.x.x then you will need to adjust the settings on the TC to a different IP range.. eg 192.168.1.1 for the TC.
Tell me what IP you get on wireless. I will assume for now you are getting 192.168.x.x
In the ethernet setup on the laptop, choose configure IPv4 Manually.
Give the computer an IP address say 10.0.1.10 with 255.255.255.0 subnet. Do not fill in router or dns values.
You can now find the ethernet linked TC and get internet via the airport.
On the TC itself, just leave it in router mode.. and ignore all the errors.. turn off the wireless.
