Cable modem advice

Hello all
I am trying to chase down a consistent problem. My download speed degrades after a short while (this seems to be getting worse, a matter of hours rather than days). If I reboot the cable modem, the speed immediately is back to full speed. This definitely seems to be an issue with my equipment rather than the ISP or time of day. Normal good speed is around 4500 but drops to 700-900. Upload speeds remain consistent at 400+.
Here is the setup:
2002 Quicksilver G4 Dual 1G
OSX 10.3.8
Terayon TJ715X cable modem
Linksys BEFSR41 Ethernet Cable/DSL Router
Adelphia HSI
only this computer connected
System Network Preferences set to Built-in Ethernet / Using DHCP and Configure IPv6 is set to Automatic
The computer is almost 4 years old and the cable modem and router are about 2 years old
Two questions:
1. Any thoughts or advice on what I should check to trouble shoot the problem? I have tried different cables, etc. Rebooting the computer makes no difference, but rebooting the modem does. I believe I have tried different ports on the router with no change. Modem and computer only have one ethernet port each.
2. It has been suggested that the cable modem is dying. If so, can anyone recommend a good one?
Thanks,
John

Hey Charlie
Thanks for the great post.
You might be able to check the diagnostics page for your modem and see if there's a problem. This page lists the values you should see for Adelphia.
I just checked and the numbers look okay.
But if it originally took days for the speed to degrade, and now it's just hours, it sounds to me like it could be the cable modem going bad. Just to make sure it's not the router, I'd suggest connecting the computer straight to the cable modem and see if you get the same degradation in speed.
That's next on my list :').
As for a replacement cable modem, I got a Motorola SB5120 in August to replace an older Motorola SB3100. If you look around, you might be able to find some good rebates. This page lists other modems they support.
I'll check it out.
However, I'd also suggest you look at either Comcast or Time Warner, since Adelphia is selling off more or less all of their assets to one or the other of these companies. So, if you already know who's taking over your system, you'd want to see what modems they support as well.
Yeah, I've been anticipating (welcoming/dreading?) that.
Thanks again Charlie, just the stuff I was looking for.

  • Need expert cable modem airport extreme advice

I have been on hold with Comcast for an hour and so far no end in site. So I thought maybe someone here might be able to help me.
Because of Comcast's recent decision to cap bandwidth to 250GB a month I moved up to their Business Class high speed internet service that have NO bandwidth cap. I also get 16MB Down and 2MB Up for just $20 a month more, but the no limit on bandwidth sold me.
Anyway, they installed the new modem today while I was away, and when I returned home I saw that my Airport Utility was reporting a "Double NAT" error. Airport recommended changing the unit to "Bridge mode" (I also have two other base stations in the house), which corrected the Amber light, Double NAT error, but while I can connect to the net I am getting slower speeds.
Speakeasy.net is showing me that IF I use Bridge Mode I will average 8-10MB Down, and 1-1.5MB Up, but if I allow the Double NAT error by using "sharing a single IP" address I get an average of 15-20MB Down and 2-2.5MB Up.
Bridge Mode doesn't affect the other two units on my network, and while 8-10MB Down is still quite fast, the 15-20MB is a quite a bit faster.
So my question is this: Does the Business Class modem serve its own DHCP/NAT and if I set my Airport to "Share a single IP" it is redundant? Are both the cable modem and the Airport attempting to use DHCP/NAT and that is what causes the error? Lastly, is there a real reason for using Bridge Mode instead of "share a single IP", with respect to security, stability, or anything else? Does it really matter which one I use as long as I am able to use the net on my computers?
Thanks in advance for any insight you can provide. And yes, I am STILL on hold

  • WRT54GS with Mac OS 10.6.8 and RCN cable modem not working

    Hello,
I have a Linksys WRT54GS, version 6 with Mac OS X (version 10.6.8) hooked up to a Scientific Atlantic cable modem, with RCN as the ISP.
Recently, RCN had some network issues, and so I had to power down and reset my modem. The modem is working fine now -- no problems at all when the Mac is connected direclty to the modem.
The router's network is OK in that I can connect the Mac wirelessly to the network, but I can't connect to the internet through the router (through neither the wireless or wired connection).
I have downloaded the latest firmware update for the router, following the Linksys site instructions, but this has not helped me solve the problem.
Does anyone have any advice as to what I should do? I did call Linksys tech support on the advice of RCN, and they said that the router does appear to be working (power, WLAN, and Internet lights are on), but they would be charging me nearly the cost of a new router to fix the problem.
    Any advice would be appreciated!

Since you upgraded the Router WRT54GS with the latest firmware so once reset the Router and power cycle the whole network… Then connect the Modem with Linksys Router on the Internet Port and then connect any one computer to any one of the Ethernet port on the Router [Numbered – 1, 2, 3 and 4]… Let me know the RCN connection is a DSL connection or cable connection…
So if you have a DSL connection you can refer to this link:
    http://www6.nohold.net/Cisco2/ukp.aspx?pid=93&login=1&vw=1&app=search&articleid=4020&userrole=Linksy...
So if you have a Cable Internet Connection you can refer to this link:
    http://www6.nohold.net/Cisco2/ukp.aspx?pid=93&vw=1&articleid=3686
As far as the wireless is concern:
    # Open up the browser and on the address bar type 192.168.1.1 that will open up the Router setup page…
    # Then Click on wireless Tab create the Wireless Network Name SSID and select the channel to 6, 9, and 11… Click Save Settings...
    # Then Click on Wireless Security sub tab and select the security mode and provide the password as per the requirement… Click Save Settings...
After doing the settings try to connect the preferred network on the wireless devices and check the connectivity….

  • SurfBoard Cable Modems and OS X

I just wanted to post a message about my findings and my solution to the Mototrola SurfBoard 5101 Cable modem. I use comcast as my ISP. I was using an old COM21 modem. I was getting around 4300 KBPS on a broadband test from Speakeasy. Since Comcast was starting this PowerBoost, I needed a DOCSIS 1.1 compliant modem and the COM21 modem wasn't. I went to my localComcast office to switch it out since I was leasing one. They gave me a SurfBoard 5101. I already saw the postings and the articles on Macfixit.com. I tried the modem and was getting 2700 Kbps. I tried everything to get the speed better. Connecting my iMac directly to the modem. Tweaking TCP settings.
I called Comcast and they said they never heard of the issue. I explained of all the postings I saw and the artiles also. She said she believed me but didn't know of the problem. I found one article talking about using other modems. The newer Surfboard 5120 modem said was better but had issues with Comcast's network and would disconnect. They said the linksys cable modem wasn't any better. The one they said was the best was the DLINK DCM-202. It was 49.95 on sale at Best Buy. I thought, what the ****, I'll try it. If it didn't work I can return it. I got it home. Installed it. Provisioned it and ran the Speakeasy tests. I was blown away. I got a speed of 9049 Kbps. Just ran the test while typing this.
So if anyone else having this issue, I would return the cable modem back to Comcast and ask for a non Motorola modem. That's the advice the Comcast rep told me. Or just buy the DLINK modem. I can now return the 5101 modem and stop leasing it and finally I get my full speed.
    Thanks!!!

I used telewest's 10 megabit cable service here in the London UK for about a year. they issued me with a motorola surboard SB 5100i and this worked perfectly. I could get the max download speed of 1.2 megabytes per second and an upload speed of 400k.
I used the cable modem with a linksys wrt54gs router and has not bandwidth issues at all.
I did not have to tweak any network settings on my Macs.

I did some more research into this and see what anyone out there thinks. The Dlink modem uses a TI chipset with a method of controlling ACKS called Turbodox. It does ACK filtering. I also have read the the newer Motorola Sufboard modem (5120) works fine with Macs. This modem also uses TurboDox.
If you run a tweak test from DSLREPORTS.COM, it states to turn on selective ACKS. Selective ACKS is an option in OS X. Delayed ACKS are. I have tried the delayed ACKS on my iMac with the 5101 but didn't have any luck. I noticed also a person mentioned in the macfixit.com article said he thought the delayed acks setting helped his issue.
I am wondering if the TurboDox is taking care of this "selective acks" setting at the modem level instead of the machine level. Since the Macs can't do this the modem does and the connection is much faster.
I found a white paper on the TurboDox implementation and what it does with ACKS:

  • Reliability of Motorola SB5101N Surfboard cable modem

    Hello,
Can anyone comment on the reliability of the Motorola SB5101N Surfboard cable modem versus other cable modems (Thompson DCM 475, Cisco DPC 3825).  I have the Motorola SB5101N for about 3 weeks and it appears to be having intermittent connectivity problems.  Can anyone comment on a similar experience?

I used a very similar model to that for about a year and seems to notice the same thing.
I switched to a Zoom brand and haven't had the issue since. I would trust anything Cisco, just due to their high reputation though.
If you like my post, or solution to your issue/question, go ahead and click on the little star by my name and/or accept the post as the Solution. It makes me happy.
I'm NOT an employee of Best Buy, or Geek Squad, though I did work as an Agent for a year 5 years ago. None of my posts are to be taken as the official stance that Best Buy will take on your situation. My advice is just that, advice.
Unfortunately, that's the bad luck of any electronic, there's going to be bad Apples... wait that's a horrible pun.

  • Cable Modem, Static IP and AE

    Hello, first post here.
Last sunday, I helped a friend install a new airport extreme card in his 1.8 GHz PPC G5 and we tried to create a wireless network between his mac and and a Toshiba laptop using a refurbished AE. The installation of the card went smoothly but we were unable to set the internet connection for both machines.
He has a cable modem and his ISP assigned a static IP to his main machine, the G5. After we plugged the router's ethernet cable to the airport, there was simply no way we could connect to the internet. I read a lot of posts here regarding the subject and I really don't know what went wrong. If I got it right, in this specific case, the "Distribute IP Addresses" option should be disable since the AE would act only as a wireless access point. So, we disabled that option and it didn't work. All we got was an amber blinking light. After fiddling around with the AirPort Admin Utility, we changed the option "Connect using", under the Internet tab, from PPPoE to Ethernet. The AE was updated but the amber light was still blinking. Under the same tab, we changed "Configure" from "Using DHCP" to "Manually" and I filled out all the info I had received from the ISP. The AE was updated and finally we got the green light. But no connection whatsoever. We tried changing the settings several times but to no avail.
I brought the AE home, tested it and it worked perfectly here, where I have a broadband ADSL connection with dynamic IP (I had to turn on the "Distribute IP Addresses" option and change the connection from Ethernet to PPPoE). So I ruled out the possibility of a broken AE. Then, today, I read this post here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1114375&#1114375
Where Henry B. answers a question by saying:
"What I suggest you do is disable the router built into the Airport Express by unchecking the option to "distribute IP addresses" found under the Network tab of the Airport Admin Utility. Whether or not you manually assign an IP address to your Airport Express is up to you (but if you do, make sure it is above the range used by the D-Link router's own DHCP server). Restart all wireless computers. From this point on, ALL computers on your network including those connecting via the Airport Express will obtain an IP address from the D-Link router's DHCP server"
My question is: the whole installation should have worked if we only had restarted the computers? What about the amber blinking light when the "Using DHCP" option is enabled?
We'll probably try again later this week but it would be nice if someone could shed some light on the problem.
Thanks in advance for any help.
    Dual 1.25 GHz PowerPC G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Hello,
I've been searching forever but no one at my isp nor any of the "geniuses" have been able to help me solve my network issues. Any advice is appreciated. If you want to avoid reading the history of what I've tried - just tell me how to set up a network to allow -
    1. 5 devices using the static ips assigned by my DSL isp.
    2. 5-10 devices using Dynamic ips assigned by an Airport Extreme, including both wireless and wired.
    3. my ethernet connected airport express (connected to my whole house speaker) to also provide wireless access to the network for that side of the house.
Maybe you don't need to know my frustrating history. Here's the short version
Despite every configuration imaginable, using 2 different hubs, 1 main hub, modem to Airport, modem to hub... the list goes on - I haven't been able to get both my static and dynamic wired devices networking at the same time.
    1. Modem to Airport WAN, hub to Airport LAN - allows wired and wireless devices but only with Airport assigned addresses. (I need to use my isp addresses too)
    2. Modem to Hub, Airport WAN to hub, wired static devices to hub - allows use of my isp static addresses & Airport assigned dynamic but only for wireless devices.
    3. Modem to Hub1, Airport WAN to hub1, wired static devices to hub1, Airport LAN to hub2, wired dynamic devices to hub2 - give the error message "no dchp server found".
    Second Part:
AExpress- WDS extended the signal but ruined the music transfer. Songs skipping etc. Ethernet connection is great for airtunes but wireless signal disappears if I uncheck "distribute ips". Since Extreme already distributes - why won't the express grab some of them? Roaming needs static ips & I need my isp statics for other WAN devices. I just need the Express to bridge to our local LAN & operate AirTunes simultaneously.
    whew! thanks for any advice

  • Switching From DSL to Cable Modem

I am about to switch from a DSL service to a faster Cable Modem service using my local provider's (Time Warner Roadrunner) self install kit. I was hoping that you experts could give me some advice before I begin the conversion.
Currently, my DSL modem connects to Airport Extreme, then Airport Extreme to my iMAC.
My question is whether to first plug in the ethernet cable from the new cable modem directly into the iMAC and make sure that the internet is accessible. Then power off all devices, hook up Airport Extreme back into the chain and try again.
Or right from the start, should I just plug the new cable modem into Airport Extreme and see if the iMAC sees the internet automatically?
Any step by step advise would be appreciated.
    Kranepool

My question is whether to first plug in the ethernet cable from the new cable modem directly into the iMAC and make sure that the internet is accessible. Then power off all devices, hook up Airport Extreme back into the chain and try again.
You pretty much summed it up.
I would do the following in order:
o Power down the DSL modem, AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS), and iMac. Order is not critical.
o Install the new cable modem and connect the iMac directly to it using an Ethernet cable.
o Power-on the cable modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes.
o Power-on the iMac, and then, check for Internet connectivity.
o Power down the iMac, and then, the cable modem.
o Disconnect the iMac from the modem; connect an Ethernet cable between the modem and the WAN port of the AEBS; connect another Ethernet cable between the LAN port of the AEBS and the iMac.
o Power-on the cable modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes.
o Power-on the AEBS; wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the iMac, and then, check for Internet connectivity.

  • AirPort Extreme/Router/Arris Cable Modem

I have Cable internet, and I'm using an Arris Cable Modem. I got a router a while back, and it was working great between my PC and PowerBookG4, when one day it stopped working. I eventually through the router out. Yesterday, I tried connecting the Arris Cable Modem wire to my AirPort Extreme. I turned on my Powerbook, and in the little AirPort icon I had 4 bars, so I assumed I had a connection. I opened up Safari, but I couldn't get anything. I tried restarting, reconnecting, and anything else I figured would effect the connection. The lights on the AirPort express, when I connect the wire, are...1st one is blinking, but slowly, 2nd is steady, 3rd blinks. I'm wondering if theres something preventing me from using the Cable Modem w/ Airport Express.
    - Thanks in advance.

Connect the cable modem to the Airport Base Station's WAN port (that's the port labelled with the "circle of dots" icon). Then pull both the modem and the Airport Base Station from power for at least five minutes. Then plug the modem into power and wait a minute. Then plug the Base Station into power and wait a minute. Then try internet access via the Base Station again.
That's my only bit of advice. No other suggestions if that fails to work.

  • When I connect Time Capsule to Time Warner Cable Modem, amber light flashes

I want to use Time Capsule as my primary wireless network base. When I connect my Time Capsule directly to my Time Warner Cable Modem, the amber light flashes and Time Capsule won't appear in AirPort Utility on my MacBookPro. I've tried unplugging everything and waiting to reset cable modem and Time Capsule.
Before I got the Time Capsule, I used a wireless router. The only way I can get Time Capsule to work is as a guest on my old wireless router network. I can't get the Time Capsule to configure itself directly with my Time Warner Cable Modem.
Any advice would be most appreciated.

This situation is pretty common now and it has nothing to do with the any of the routers but rather how cable modems are configured to work. They seem to latch on to the first device connected to them whether it be a router or a computer and will not allow any other device to access their network. The solution is to power off the cable modem and wait a minute. While you're waiting disconnect the old connection from the cable modem. Power up the cable modem and then connect the new device, router or computer, to the cable modem. Give it a few seconds to complete the connection and you should be ready to go. You have to do this every time you switch connections to the cable modem. This is also why you should set your router to serve addresses so that you don't have to do the cable modem samba when you want to connect a new device to the network.

  • Help setting up Webstar Cable Modem internet connection

Okay, i FINALLY have cable internet...and i just realized I don't know how to set it up....i've never been in the situation before...can any of you give me some resources?
    .:title edited by dibblethewrecker:.

Okay, I'm using an onboard ethernet NIC.  I tried using the ubuntu live cd, but it won't automagically set up my network either.
I figured out my LAN card isn't even detected by my router so I'm using onboard NIC for the time being...my router detects that one.
By the way I got a router....it is a LinkSys Wireless-G Broadband Router--model WRT54G.  But I'm not using the wireless portion on it.  My girlfriends computer is hooked up to it with windows, and it connects fine.
I'm still not having much luck.  I went to that cable-modem howto in wiki, followed it to tdlp's DHCP mini-howto...it makes reference to a script called /etc/rc.d/inet...I don't have that one...should I?
I would still appreciate any advice from you guys...thank you in advance.

  • Purchasing a modem advice needed

I currently have Performance internet. with a leased modem from Comcast.  I would like to purchase my own modem instead of leasing.  I can see the list of approved modems, but they seem to vary in price.  What is the best modem for me?  Do I need an expensive one or will a cheap one work just the same?  Does Comcast sell these modems or should i go to Amazon/Best Buy to purchase a modem?  Any advice on the best (most economical) options?  Thank you!

That said if you want to save some coin and get a excellent 8x4 modem then the Zoom 5341J is highly recommended by many users and has been rock solid on the comcast network for years.  Only purcahse a modem that is BRAN new no refurbs and make sure its from a retailer you trust such as Amazon or your local brick and mortar stores such as Best Buy. And also keep in mind if you have there phone service none of the above suggested modems will work.  http://www.amazon.com/ARRIS-Motorola-SurfBoard-SB6183-DOCSIS/dp/B00MA5U1FW/ref=sr_1_1/179-2362125-9703333?ie=UTF8&qid=1437341876&sr=8-1&keywords=motorola+sb6183 http://www.amazon.com/Zoom-DOCSIS-Cable-Modem-5341J/dp/B0063K4NN6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1437341985&sr=8-1&keywords=Zoom+5341J&pebp=1437341988596&perid=0RZ62WQ73RESXKKH544B

  • Time Capsule does not wirelessly connect to wireless cable modem gateway

I am trying to get Time capsule to act as what I think is supposed to be a wireless bridge (Apple retail employee's advice) to enable an old G4 iMac upstairs to have wireless ("Airport") online access from the wifi cable modem downstairs. I can get everything to work when I run ethernet cable down the stairs but avoiding that is exactly why I bought the Time Capsule.
I thought time capsule was a wireless device! how do I get it to  speak to the gateway?? Right now it is blinking amber slowly.
Havent tried yet but I would ideally like to run time machine back up of my Macbook pro, from wherever I am, upstairs or downstairs.

Thanks everyone. My understanding is that the time capsule needs to be hard wired to the gateway , not what apple retail store "genius" told me. I really wanted to wifi-enable the stranded G4 (and thus access the laserwriter 8500 cabled to it) upstairs.
-- now I'm re-reading bob timmons' remark, and wondering: i don't think I need time capsule to be a router, do I? I just need it to connect to the G4 with a cable, and receive wifi from the gateway ( ... and do time machine backups). I really only need one ethernet port, and the wifi connectivity.
so on a whim I had also ordered a airport express, thinking it would be fun to get iTunes on an old stereo system. Now I think I need it to do the job of wifi-enabling the upstairs G4 instead. Just came this afternoon. We'll see if this allows me to get rid of the ethernet cable mess.
But first I will try to (restore factory defaults, and then) reconfigure to "join" an existing wifi network (which so far is just the macbook pro and the cable modem gateway). My confidence level that this will work: poor.
