Okay, I'm using an onboard ethernet NIC. I tried using the ubuntu live cd, but it won't automagically set up my network either.
I figured out my LAN card isn't even detected by my router so I'm using onboard NIC for the time being...my router detects that one.
By the way I got a router....it is a LinkSys Wireless-G Broadband Router--model WRT54G. But I'm not using the wireless portion on it. My girlfriends computer is hooked up to it with windows, and it connects fine.
I'm still not having much luck. I went to that cable-modem howto in wiki, followed it to tdlp's DHCP mini-howto...it makes reference to a script called /etc/rc.d/inet...I don't have that one...should I?
I would still appreciate any advice from you guys...thank you in advance.

You need to power off the modem for 15-30 seconds, then power back up and then connect. The modem is remembering the last connection (your friend).

EA6300 and TWC Cable Modem-no connection for internet

I bought an EA6300 router and it is not connecting to the Time Warner Cable Modem box, Arris TM502G.
I have verified that my computer (obviously by this post), that if I connect directly to the Cable Modem box, I can get onto the internet. Did I buy a too grandious router?
I talked with TMC and they said that the Dynamic Connection DACP would have to be configured on the router.
Okay now I am confused.

Did you encounter an error message when going through the setup of the router? Before going through the setup again, reset the router first by pushing and holding the reset button using a pin until the power light will flash. Wait for the power light to go solid. On the computer that’s directly connected to the router, open up a browser and it should prompt you to setup the router. Just follow the onscreen instructions and it should let you setup the router. If the setup will fail, refer to the link provided by sabretooth on how to setup the router with a cable connection.

My airport Express is not recognizing Ethernet cables, therefore not allowing my cable modem to connect to it. This is resulting in no Internet connection. I upgraded the firmware to 7.5.2 and it attempts to connect but just keeps flashing. Any thoughts?

I've tried other routers in place of the airport and they work fine, but I really want to use the airport instead due to the wireless speaker addition.

I assumed that you have already tried using different "known good" Ethernet cables, just in case the one you have now is faulty ... correct?
Assuming the answer is "yes," the other option would be to perform a complete power recycle of your networking gear. This is something that should be performed whenever making network equipment changes.
Please try the following:
I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref: Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes.
Power-up the base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes.
Power-up your computer(s).
In this basic configuration, computers connected to the base station, either by wire or wireless (as appropriate for the base station type), should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options.

No Connection to the cable modem/Internet with APX

My Apple Airport Express BaseStation worked properly for some weeks - but from one day to the other, the ethernet connection to the cable modem doesn't work anymore. The cable modem is working properly, there is NO problem. I can connec to the internet vial LAN card of the computer without problems. But my APX has no connection to the cable modem. The flashlight is blinking orange.
I tried everything - hard reset, soft reset,..... but no change, there is no connectin to the cable modem.
Does anybody know what to do? Can the APX be defect?

I found the solution: somehow an old and inactive dhcp-server and dns-server setting messed around with the settings. Once I deleted these settings everything started working normally again

Sharing a modem internet connection through Time Capsule...?

Hi there, everyone. I'm hoping some of you can help me out with a networking issue. At my house, my only high-speed internet option is an Aircard of some sort (Sprint Sierra 595u, specifically), which (up until yesterday) i was sharing rather successfully in a wireless ad-hoc network consisting of my macbook pro, and 3 other windows machines. The computer with the modem is a Windows XP Home laptop.
Now, i realize the card cannot plug into the Time Capsule, and yes, i do know there are routers made specifically for this, but the Time Capsule would be great so i can have a backup device without hogging a USB port on my macbook.
at any rate, having done some research, it seems that the issue with using XP's Internet Sharing in addition to a separate router is that both are basically DNS servers (correct me please if i'm using incorrect terminology). I have read that i can do two things to bypass this problem: 1) disable DHCP on the Time Capsule, thereby making it an access point; or 2) put the "main" computer (with the modem on it) in a different subnet mask than the router and client computers.
I've been attempting option #2, but have had some troubles in the Airport Utility... one is that i cannot seem to find an option to set the Internet connection to a Static IP... also, when choosing a different subnet mask, what should i change it to? does it matter?
so, i realize this relies heavily on XP... sorry about that. any comments, recommendations, or words of wisdom would be most welcome.

At the moment.. we have no info.. none.. nothing. Sorry but we cannot help remotely when the info is .. it don't work.
So.. what broadband do you have?
How is the TC setup? Router or bridge?
Is the pc connected by ethernet or wireless? If wireless please test with ethernet. Wireless is too problematic to be relied on.. at least to figure out the problem.
When you open a command window and type ipconfig /all please copy and paste the results here.
Then ping the TC address from command window. Does it respond?
Ping 8.8.8.8 Does it respond?

Old Mac OS 8.5 configuring to use cable as internet connection

I gave my sister a old imac OS 8.5 and she is on Road Runner Cable we tried to hook it up to her internet connection and it siad she needed a 8.6. What do we do now? MAke it simple cause we are not computor smart. I installed extra memory on the imac and does that mean I can install Juager or Panther now?

Internet Connection Setup

I am trying to create a wireless network by connecting the airport extreme with my internet modem/router. Should I choose Bridge Mode or Sharing A Public IP Address?

Sorry, by "downstream" I mean the router would not be the first (upstream) router connected to the Internet.
Somewhat graphically: Internet modem > Upstream Router > Downstream Router > Network Client.
In this example, the upstream router would provide NAT & DHCP services and the downstream one would be configured as a bridge. This will allow network clients connected to the downstream router to get the same NAT & DHCP services as those connected to the upstream router.

My system crashed 15 times on this USB modem internet connection called MTS blaze.My observation is that it happens only when downloading something from the net.What's the Problem???

Please clarify "USB Modem."
Is this a dial-up connection modem?
Is this a wired cable or DSL modem that sits on the desk with a wire running to a USB port on your computer?
Is it a wireless USB adaptor that plugs directly into the USB port?
If a wired cable or DSL modem, a USB connection to a modem seldom plays well with Macs; usually very slow at best. Freestanding modems should have an ethernet port. Use it. Fast and reliable. If your ISP left you a modem with only a USB port, get them to exchange it for one with an ethernet port. Don't take no for an answer.

Can't establish internet connection with Time Capsule

I currently have a wireless Linksys router and have switch over to TC. I've connected my cable modem internet connection to the internet connection of the Time Capsule, however, with the Airport Utility it states that I do not have a valid IP Address. I've check under the Manual setting for Internet and ensured that the connection says "share a public IP address", but that does not work. Any ideas?

Did you remember to completely reset your cable modem and power cycle the network?
Push the reset button on the modem (if present)
Power the modem down
Pull the batttery (if easily accessible)
Power down every device on the network....order is not important
Wait at least 15-20 minutes
Make sure that you have the Ethernet cable from the modem connected to the WAN port (world icon) on the Time Capsule, and re-install the battery if it was pulled in the steps above
Power up the modem and let it run for 4-5 minutes by itself
Power up the Time Capsule the same way
Continue powering up devices one at a time about a minute apart until the network is powered back up
Check network operation

10.5.6 setup on mini with USB nic, not receiving DHCP from WAN (cable modem

Hello,
I'm probably in a little over my head thinking I could configure MacOS X Server without much IT knowledge. But I started, so I'm not giving up yet.
Here's my setup:
— cable modem ethernet connects to USB nic (the apple macbook air one) plugged into mac mini running 10.5.6 Server
— ethernet on mac mini connects to switch
— switch connects to airport base station set-up as bridge
— in the future other computers will connect over ethernet to the switch (that's why mac mini isn't plugged into base station directly)
Here's the issue:
— cable modem uses DHCP (no fixed IP).
— when first installing 10.5.6 Server, modem was connected directly to ethernet on mac mini, and picked up everything from DHCP, worked fine. Ran all the system updates (started with a 10.5 initial install)
— after everything was installed, I switched the modem to the USB ethernet adapter and ran NAT setup assistant. configured the USB Ethernet as the WAN, Ethernet as the LAN, turned on VPN.
— now the USB Ethernet won't pick up the DHCP of the WAN anymore. It did it once, and then never again.
— I've run the NAT setup assistant to switch the WAN and LAN nics to see if the USB Ethernet was the issue, but with the same results.
— This setup used to work although not quite stable on 10.5.4 server.
My initial questions:
— is the firewall blocking the DHCP?
— is the LAN DHCP messing with the WAN?
— in the previous version I had to set the replythresholdseconds from 10 to 0 in the bootpd.plist for it to hand out DHCP on the LAN, but there is no such entry in the pootpd.plist anylonger, and the keynet_address entry that was missing from the previous version of bootpd.plist is now present, so it seems the bootpd.plist has been fixed by apple.
— what am I doing wrong? Why doesn't this just work as advertised...
I know there are several of you out there that have the same setup working (I found posts from hirstey and DigiAngel with the same setup) so it must be possible. All your help is much appreciated!!

DSL modems differ from cable modems as far as I understand. Where DSL modems are actually routers capable of NAT/DHCP, cable modems are just a network interface/brigde and can't do any of that. So it should pass the external IP to the computer. I'm writing on a laptop with the cable modem directly plugged into it, and it picked up the external IP etc. near instantly. The mac mini did the same before I ran the NAT setup assistant. I believe it picked it up once after that, but never since.
I had done a clean install, had the ethernet plugged into its internal ethernet port (en0) and was able to download all the system updates. Then plugged in the USB ethernet, I'm pretty sure it still picked up the IP there. Ran the NAT setup assistant and can't get anything to work anymore. Even with all services switched off.
So the modem is doing its job, but when I connect it to the USB nic the connection gets a self-assigned IP in about 3 seconds after seeing the cable is connected. The one time I've seen it get the right IP, it got a self-assigned IP first and then about 5 seconds later picked up on the correct IP. (And it picked up everything, including DNS server and search domains, which this laptop I'm writing on does not, although it works just the same).
Unfortunately, this laptop runs 10.4.11 which doesn't recognize the USB nic, so I can't test the adapter outside of the server environment. But I've had the genius bar test the adapter previously and it worked fine then, plus I've run the NAT setup assistant with the connections inverted (WAN over built-in ethernet, LAN over USB ethernet) with the same results: WAN gets self-assigned IP.
I've also tried configuring manual IP for the WAN from what I saw was given to this laptop (it kept the same IP even after being disconnected/reconnected, so I guess the IP for my modem won't change IP unless I reset it. Although I'm not sure if it's correct logic to assume the mac mini would pick up the same IP as well since I think that's actually tied to the MAC address and the IP doesn't belong to the modem but to the computer behind it).
Anyway, I'm not sure what to try next...
Hm. Wait, this might have something to do with it: the firewall logs the following:

Looking up 73.227.220.1 gives me dns1.inflow.pa.bo.comcast.net, clearly my provider's DNS server. Trying to get me an IP that my wirewall is denying? Turning off the firewall doesn't make it pick up the correct IP though... I have turned off all services and still just got a self-assigned IP.

Airport express won't connect to cable modem

We recently moved to a new residence and just had internet service installed by a technician. Unfortunately, I didn't have my Airport Express handy while he was here, so he simply connected my Macbook Pro directly to the cable modem via ethernet cable. When I found my Airport Express, I disconnected the Macbook Pro from the cable modem and connected the Airport Express to the modem via the same ethernet cable and powered up. The Airport Express began flashing yellow but the flashing yellow never did turn the steady green that indicates the Airport Express is receiving the signal. I called my internet provider but they don't deal with router issues. What can I do?

Cable modems "remember" the device that is connected. Your modem is "remembering" your computer and looking for it when you connect the AirPort Express, so it will not connect to the AirPort Express.
You need to push the reset button on the modem and then power off the modem
Power off everything else on the network...all computers and devices
Wait 15 minutes
Make sure that the ethernet cable from the modem is connected to the AirPort Express
Power up the modem only and let it run 3-4 minutes by itself
Power up the AirPort Express and let it run a few moments
Power up each computer and device one at a time
Check for proper operation.
If...you are switching from a previous DSL service to cable, you may need to reconfigure the AirPort Express. Post back for more info on this.

Wired home net, 5x router - 4 to computers, 1 to new cable modem: connect?

I have an in-home Ethernet, cat-5 wired, network to which are connected 2 Macs and 1-2 Windoz boxes. I just subscribed to cable high speed internet service (Comcast nee Adelphia) and want direct access from each computer to the cable modem. Supplier sez this should work - however, their tech support doesn't have wired net solutions in their 3 ring binders (you'll have to consult the router mfgr - well, the router, GFE EZ500-S, is no longer made but all seems to be working fine - I can ping the working machines from this Mac, all given a common subnet IP address of 10.10.10.nn, nn=1/2/3/4. My g4 mdd nn=2.
The cable modem is broadcasting just fine - a Motorola 5100 model. All lights are green that should be. I understand that if I directly hooked it to one (probably Windoz) box I would should see the default webbrowser displaying the Adelphia signin screen by which I initiate my account name and email identity. I know from the Compaq box with XP home on it and the Help file that Billy Gates recommends AGAINST what I want to do and wants me to put a router on my router through which every other (than the 1st) box must go to get to the cable. The cable modem is connected directly to the 5th RJ45 port on the wired router.
My question is, what must I do on the Mac to process the cable modem signals on the Mac? I have it on the authority of an Adelphia geek I chatted with at their local office where I went for face time with them that I need to be walked through Mac connection but that what I want in respect to direct access from each computer to the cable modem should work just fine AS SOON AS I PROPERLY INITIATE SERVICE by interacting with their signup web page on some box. I have not properly configured the Compaq because I am not getting the defaut web browser (Firefox) displaying the Adelphia sign-in. I apparently need to add/activate some XP code to detect the cable modem signal on the Ethernet connection. I haven't done that yet because I'm afraid Billy Gates will compel me to install their router-on-a-router solution.
I am in an unresolved circle here. When I spent 45 minutes on their support line I essentially was told they don't do wired routers/home networks. Tell me, doctor, what should I do?

Duane is correct, the EZ500-S is an Ethernet switch, not a router.
If you want to use your switch to connect your systems to your ISP, then all of your systems must be configured to obtain their IP-addresses automatically*, and you must arrange with your ISP to lease enough IP addresses for all of them. When each system boots, it will use DHCP to request an IP-address from your ISP.
If you don't want to pay your ISP for more than one IP-address, then you must get a router. This isn't Billy Gates' rule, it's the Internet's. If you do this, you can continue to statically assign IP-addresses (10.10.10.nn) to your systems if you want; the router will get its own WAN IP-address from your ISP using DHCP, and you can configure your router to do whatever you need on your LAN. Most routers come with built-in DHCP servers for the LAN, so you could also configure your systems to obtain their IP-addresses automatically -- it's up to you. The router will use NAT to substitute its own WAN IP-address on packets going out to the WAN, and to route incoming packets to the proper system on your LAN.
*unless you contract with your ISP for one or more static IP-address, which is typically a lot more expensive!

Lost connection to my cable modem

Ok people I am hoping that you can help me out here. Yesterday my Time Capsule stop connecting to the internet through the cable modem. Called Comcast assuming it was there service. After an extensive check process we determined that service and the cable modem were working correctly. So then i proceeded to call Apple Support. Again through the check process of all the peices that are connected to finally determine that the TC was the culprit. I took the TC back to the Apple Store and they graciously exchanged it out. I took it back home hooked it up and it we are back to where I started, the new TC is responding exactly like the old unit. So my cable modem is a Motorala SB6141 and I have sevice through Comcast. The cable modem and TC have been working together for 6 months before this happened, with no new hardware added in the last three months. The cable modem when connected to the computer (Mac or Windows) directly can connect to the internet. I even tried connecting the cable modem to a AirPort Express and it had the same effect as the TC. So does anybody have any suggestions?

The SB6141 is problematic with the Airport routers.
There is some issue of compatibility.. it is hard to figure out.
If you replace the cable modem with a different one it will be more likely to work. I am not in the US so just look at posts about the more compatible models. Or simply use another brand router, and set the TC in bridge and use it as wireless and backup target.
I do think you can get some improvement in some cases using a crossover cable. I have made that recommendation and it has worked for people.
Or a small 10/100 switch between the two .. cable modem and TC.

You need to power cycle the modem whenever you change router.. I am guessing you are doing that.. but just to be sure.. at least 15-30min is required with some ISP.. 5min for others.. some are much longer..
The ISP must drop your previously connected equipment to pick up the new one.
