Cable Modem Selection

I have Mediacom as my isp.  I am about to purchase a cable modem.  I recently purchase an iMac with and i7 processor.
I am a recent Apple convert ..... and, not a techie.  However, I still have an old windows system in the house which I will still be using from time to time.
I have narrowed the modem selection down to either a Motorola SB5101 or SB5120 at the 2.0 docsis level.  At the 3.0 level, we have narrowed down the selection to either a SB6120 or SB6141.  However, I am not tied to any of them ..... I just want them to work fast and reliably with my computer systems.
Can anyone provide input on which modem will work well with apple and which one will work well with windows (maybe the wrong forum for this part of the question).  Also, I more than welcome other suggestions.
Mediacom says that their system will work with any docsis 2.0 modem.  As to 3.0, they want it to be either Cisco or Motorola (except the SB6121).

Your iMac will work with almost any cable modem. Most ISP's provide a modem at no charge or a very small rental fee, therefore I'd recommend contacting your ISP and using their recommended modem.

  • WRT54GS with Mac OS 10.6.8 and RCN cable modem not working

    Hello,
    I have a Linksys WRT54GS, version 6 with Mac OS X (version 10.6.8) hooked up to a Scientific Atlantic cable modem, with RCN as the ISP.
    Recently, RCN had some network issues, and so I had to power down and reset my modem. The modem is working fine now -- no problems at all when the Mac is connected direclty to the modem.
    The router's network is OK in that I can connect the Mac wirelessly to the network, but I can't connect to the internet through the router (through neither the wireless or wired connection).
    I have downloaded the latest firmware update for the router, following the Linksys site instructions, but this has not helped me solve the problem.
    Does anyone have any advice as to what I should do? I did call Linksys tech support on the advice of RCN, and they said that the router does appear to be working (power, WLAN, and Internet lights are on), but they would be charging me nearly the cost of a new router to fix the problem.
    Any advice would be appreciated!

    Since you upgraded the Router WRT54GS with the latest firmware so once reset the Router and power cycle the whole network… Then connect the Modem with Linksys Router on the Internet Port and then connect any one computer to any one of the Ethernet port on the Router [Numbered – 1, 2, 3 and 4]… Let me know the RCN connection is a DSL connection or cable connection…

    As far as the wireless is concern:
    # Open up the browser and on the address bar type 192.168.1.1 that will open up the Router setup page…
    # Then Click on wireless Tab create the Wireless Network Name SSID and select the channel to 6, 9, and 11… Click Save Settings...

    I am in Australia and the ISP... I think both the main ones would fit your description to a T.. big T in particular.
    Your router is really unsuitable.. if it is only wireless and no ethernet.. just buy an ethernet one.
    Do a search on ebay.. 3g router.
    But you can get the TC to join a wireless network.
    It is a non-standard setup that Apple will not support.. the option is hidden.
    If you are on Lion download the 5.6 utility. Go to the wireless set up page and hold down the option key whilst selecting wireless mode.. a new option, join will appear. You can then put in the ssid and passkey of the 3g router.
    But please note the end result of this setup..
    very slow speed. The TC is now a second wireless hop from your clients.. this will halve the speed.
    In this mode the ethernet are deactived.. for reasons only Apple know, they decided you should not use ethernet when doing this.

  • How do I use AE to allow more than one device with my cable modem?

    I connected by AE to my cable modem at my house in Japan and it works fine on "bridge mode," but only for one device at a time (this laptop, but not my iPod Touch, or vice versa). As soon as I connect a new device, it will kick the other one off. It seems that my cable modem here will only allow one device. Is there a way that I can use my Airport Extreme to allow more than one device and not have to pay the Internet provider extra for multiple IP addresses? How do I go about this? Do I select "share a public IP address" or do I select "distribute a range of IP addresses?" I tried these options but obviously wasn't doing it correctly, because then I lost the connection for everything... Thanks!

    It would be best if you "hard reset" the Airport Extreme to clear out the old and conflicting settings and then reconfigure it again.
    Hold in the reset button until you see the amber light begin to blink more quickly. Keep holding for another 3-4 seconds when you see this and then release the reset button. That will get the Extreme back to the original starting point.
    After you have powered the modem back up after the full reset, you will need to reconfigure the AirPort Extreme again. If you are using he guided setup in AirPort Utility, you will choose the option to "create a wireless network" during the setup.
    If you are using the Manual Setup, the Wireless Mode will be "Create a wireless network" and the setting for Connection Sharing would be "Share a public IP address". Adjusting the Connection Sharing setting would be the last thing that you do before you click Update to save settings.
    Here, I am assuming that you have a simple cable modem (it will have only one ethernet port), correct?

    I have 3 computers and a media server on a Linksys router with a Comcast cable modem. Everything AOK. 3 weeks ago my Lenovo 3000H shut down and rebooted for no reason. Then I began getting popups while I was on the internet saying that I needed to click on a button to make a dial-up connection. I would hit X or Cancel to make it go away. It happend more frequently and other related popups started, but I could close them and continue normally. Last weekend It happened again but I lost my connection to the internet and it would not reconnect. Now I get a big error message "Connecting through Wan Miniport(PPPOE)... Error 815: The broadband netowrk connection could not be established on your computer because the remote server is not responding. This could be caused by and invalid value for the "Service Name" field for this connection. Please contact your ISP and inquire about the correct value for this field and update it in the Connection Properties..
    I called Comcast. They don't have a clue what Error 815 is. I have changed every cable, rebooted the modem, router and all computers countless times, and reset the modem per Comcast. I have taken the router out and connected directly into the Lenovo. I have gone through every screen related to broadband connection to no avail although, being a beginner, I see screens that I have no clue what they do.I have a couple of friends and a Comcast fellow who tried to walk me through the steps they thought would restore my connectio. No luck.
    Can anyone walk me through the necessary steps to get me back to ground zero and then through the steps to reestablish my broadband connection?

    In Safari, press on the Bookmarks icon and select History.  Then press on Clear History at the top of that menu, and see it there is any improvement.
    If not, try unplugging your WiFi router for a few seconds.  Then reset the iPad's network.  Go to Settings-General-Reset-Reset Network Settings.  You will need to reconnect the iPad to WiFi.

    Hi again Jen,
    Most internet providers utilize "dhcp" -- you might want to check to see if your extreme is set to that function.
    If you want to try, you need to go into airport utility and select MANUAL setup/ then click NETWORK button on top of the window. /select TCP/IP -- make sure that you see "Using DHCP" not MANUAL in the configuration window.  If you do see using  dhcp, click the renew dhcp lease button.  Then you'd have to do the power down/up cycle again.  If all this doesn't work, you can do a hard reset on your Extreme, which will bring it back to the way it came out of the box, then go through the same proccess that was used to set it up originally.

    How do I change the channel for my cable modem?  My broadband speed slows down during peak hours, and I was advised to change the channel from 11 to 6 for example, but that I would have to do it through my airport extreme.

    You can change the radio channel on your AirPort Extreme using the AirPort Utility, as follows:
    Run the AirPort Utility.
    Select the AirPort Extreme, and then, select Edit.
    Select the Wireless tab.
    Select Wireless Options.
    By default, the channels for both the 2.4 & 5 GHz radios are set to "Automatic." You would first change this to "Manual," and then, select the desired channel.

  • WRT54G2 w/ cable modem problems

    After configuring a cable modem (motorola) with the
    router everything worked perfectly.  (I used the MAC clone setting, DHCP.)  My friend rebooted the wireless laptop with Vista several times and the internet worked perfectly.
    That night, when she went to use the internet, it didn't work.  Power cycling resolved the issue.  A few hours later, same problem, power cycling resolved.  The next day, even power cycling didn't resolve the issue.  Any thoughts?
    How can I fix this problem?  Any ideas?  How can I resolve power cycling issues, and is there a more advanced setting I can change?

    If you have to power cycle your wireless router continuously then you should upgrade your router's firmware...

    Follow these steps to upgrade the firmware on the device : -
    Open an Internet Explorer browser page on a computer hard wired to the router...
    In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1...Leave the Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
    Click on the 'Administration' tab- Then click on the 'Firmware Upgrade' sub tab- Here click on 'Browse' and browse the .bin firmware file and click on "Upgrade"...
    Wait for few seconds until it shows that "Upgrade is successful"  After the firmware upgrade, click on "Reboot" and you will be returned back to the same page OR it will say Page cannot be displayed".
    Now reset your router :
    Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router...

    Under WEP Key 1 type in any 10 numbers please(numbers only and no letters eg: your 10 digit phone number) and click on save settings...
    Please make a note of WEP Key 1 as this is the Security Key for the Wireless Network...
    Click on Advanced Wireless Settings
    Change the Beacon Interval to 75 >>Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304, Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 >>Click on "Save Settings"...
    Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...
    If you keep loosing the wireless signals, then you should download and upgdate the drivers for your wireless adapter...

  • OfficeJet J6450 - Printer connects wirelessly but doesn't print post cable modem replacment

    Equipment: My printer is an OfficeJet J6450. I run Windows Vista, current update.
    Likely triggering event: I replaced my docsis 3.0 modem with a doscis 2.0 modem. The ISP remained the same. All other computer software and firewall remained the same.
    Malfunction: After the cable modem replacement, I found that I could no longer print to my HP OfficeJet 6450. I would get an error in the printer window "Error - printing."  After restarting after the initial error appeared, I would get the error "Error - sent to printer."
    What I did:
    At first I uninstalled and re-installed the HP software for the printer (complete package with exceptions of PhotoSmart and HP customer monitoring program).
    Using the printer's network connection wizard, I entered the wireless router password to the printer. At first I didn't get a connection. Then I restarted both the computer and the printer. I also returned to the network default setting on the printer, and repeated the configuring the network. The connection finally succeeded.
    The network self-test page and the printer's network wizard confirm the connection. The printer's digital display and the HP diagnostic utility also confirmed the connection. But the diagnostic utility can't print a test page and throws up an error - "Test print failed."
    The disappointing result:  I still cannot get anything to print wirelessly.

    Go to Start > Control Panel > Printers and delete all instances of the printer.
    Next, re-add the printer:
    1. Make sure the printer is turned on and connected to your network. Verify that you can access the printer's internal web page by browsing to its IP address before continuing.  Get the IP address from a Wireless Netowork Test on the front of the printer (usually in the Network menu).
    2. Click >> Start >> Control panel >> Printers.
    3. Click the Add a printer
    4. Select Local printer
    5. Select Create a new port and select Standard TCP/IP Port and click Next button.
    6. Under Device type, select TCP/IP Device. Under Hostname or IP address, enter the printer's IP address. Click Next.
    7. Select Hewlett-Packard from the list of manufacturers and select and select your printer model. Click Next.
    If your printer model was not listed, then select Have Disk, browse the HP CD that came with your printer and select the first file that starts with hp and ends with inf. Click Open then OK. Select your printer model. Click Next.
    8. If you are asked, use the currently installed driver.
    9. It will ask for the Printer name -- enter a new name or use the existing one. This will be the name of the printer that you select from other applications.
    10. You may be asked to share the printer. Choose NO.
    11. The Print Test Page box appears. Go ahead and print it.
    12. Click Finish.

    We had a cable modem installed last week and were promised a download rate of 16 Mbs.
    When you go on to the SpeakEasy website, you are simply asked to select a city to begin the test. There is no indication that you are supposed to pick any one city over another for the test which I would assume that any pick should yield the same result. Yet when I do New York I get 6 Mbs and selecting Seattle gives me 9 Mbs. Questions -
    why are the rates different
    why am I miles away from the promised rate of 16 Mbs

    Select the city you reside in. Cable modem download/upload speeds very depending on location.

    If that's the case, assuming your ISP provided you with the cable modem, you need to contact them.
    If you are running 10.5.5 as your forum profile indicates, updating your system software may help.
    Go to your Apple Menu/Software Updates.

  • Motorola Surfboard 5101 Cable Modem

    I just wanted to post a message about my findings and my solution to the Mototrola SurfBoard 5101 Cable modem. I use comcast as my ISP. I was using an old COM21 modem. I was getting around 4300 KBPS on a broadband test from Speakeasy. Since Comcast was starting this PowerBoost, I needed a DOCSIS 1.1 compliant modem and the COM21 modem wasn't. I went to my localComcast office to switch it out since I was leasing one. They gave me a SurfBoard 5101. I already saw the postings and the articles on Macfixit.com. I tried the modem and was getting 2700 Kbps. I tried everything to get the speed better. Connecting my iMac directly to the modem. Tweaking TCP settings.
    I called Comcast and they said they never heard of the issue. I explained of all the postings I saw and the artiles also. She said she believed me but didn't know of the problem. I found one article talking about using other modems. The newer Surfboard 5120 modem said was better but had issues with Comcast's network and would disconnect. They said the linksys cable modem wasn't any better. The one they said was the best was the DLINK DCM-202. It was 49.95 on sale at Best Buy. I thought, what the **, I'll try it. If it didn't work I can return it. I got it home. Installed it. Provisioned it and ran the Speakeasy tests. I was blown away. I got a speed of 9049 Kbps. Just ran the test while typing this.
    So if anyone else having this issue, I would return the cable modem back to Comcast and ask for a non Motorola modem. That's the advice the Comcast rep told me. Or just buy the DLINK modem. I can now return the 5101 modem and stop leasing it and finally I get my full speed.

    I did some more research into this and see what anyone out there thinks. The Dlink modem uses a TI chipset with a method of controlling ACKS called Turbodox. It does ACK filtering. I also have read the the newer Motorola Sufboard modem (5120) works fine with Macs. This modem also uses TurboDox.
    If you run a tweak test from DSLREPORTS.COM, it states to turn on selective ACKS. Selective ACKS is an option in OS X. Delayed ACKS are. I have tried the delayed ACKS on my iMac with the 5101 but didn't have any luck. I noticed also a person mentioned in the macfixit.com article said he thought the delayed acks setting helped his issue.
    I am wondering if the TurboDox is taking care of this "selective acks" setting at the modem level instead of the machine level. Since the Macs can't do this the modem does and the connection is much faster.

  • Trouble connecting Cisco router with cable modem for Internet purposes

    So I am requesting help from the Cisco community on this issue as the cable company states there equipment is working fine.  At all my facilities I have a guest Internet service setup through a local Internet provide to provide Internet services to the residents and guests.  I have the cable modem usually a Motorola SBG6580 or a SMC 8014 (both provided by cable company) connected to my router on a FE or GE interface.  I am using static IPs and using the cable modem just as a modem (bridge mode).  Over the past several months these connections have just stopped working.  I have not made any drastic changes to my router configs; however, the cable company has updated the firmware on these modems.  I am wondering if that could affected how the modem and router talk.  I was told by the cable company that the modem sees the Cisco router but that the port is inactive.  My router shows the port is active and traffic passing.  Does anyone have any ideas that could point where the problem lies?  I will post a basic config to one that currently does not work.  I am using a VRF to route a certain group out, using NAT.  Please let me know if I need to post additional info.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Connecting Motorola SB6121 Cable Modem and AirPort Extreme

    I moved into a new house a couple of days ago so of course the first thing that I needed to do was get the home wireless up and running. My ISP is through Comcast. I purchased my own cable modem (Motorola SB6121) instead of renting and used my own AirPort Extreme as the wireless router.
    First, if you're purchasing your own cable modem, you will need to contact your ISP and provide them with the HFC MAC ID on the cable modem. Once you've gone through the motions, you will be able to connect your Mac (in my case Macbook) directly to the modem via ethernet cable and access the internet.
    Issue:
    When I connected the SB6121 to the AE, I could connect wirelessly to the AE, but I did not have access to the internet. So, basically the SB6121 and the AE were not talking to each other despite being physically connected via ethernet cable.
    Solution:
    After days of searching for online answers and forums (and trying different solutions) I was able to successfully get everything up and running. Make sure that you have 2 ethernet cables available.
    Here are the steps.
    I restored my AE to factory settings just to keep everything simple. Here are instructions: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3728 Once you've restored your AE, make sure that both the AE and the cable modem are unplugged from their power sources.
    Plug in the power to the SB6121.
    Connect your SB6121 directly to your laptop via Ethernet cable. Test to ensure that you have internet accessibility by going to any website.
    Remove the ethernet cable from your laptop and plug it into the "internet in" jack in the back of the AE.
    Power up the AE.
    Connect your laptop to the back of the AE using ethernet cable #2.
    Launch a browser. You should now be able to successfully connect to any website.
    Assuming that you reset your AE to factory settings, it should just be broadcasting the generic "Airport Extreme" SSID. Disconnect the ethernet cable and connect using wireless to the SSID. Launch a browser and you should be able to connect to the internet.
    You can now use the AirPort Utility to configure the AirPort settings.
    I assume that this solution would work with any of the base stations.

    I was having the exact same issue tonight.  Just purchased the AE Model A1408 and haven't been able to maintain an internet connection on my iMac whenever I tried hooking it up via the Airport Utility application.  So after I had the SB6121 connected to the AE and the AE connected to my PC with no luck, I then went to the Network icon in System Preferences.  Clicked on "Assist me...".  Then clicked on "Diagnostics..." and followed the directions which basically had me first power down the SB6121 modem and power it back up.  Then I powered down the AE router and powered it back up.  At that point I was now getting an internet connection.  I then took my ipad 2 and went to the Wi-Fi settings and noticed it was asking me to setup a network through my AE.  I selected that and went through the simple steps to set up the network and password and now it all works.  I am a novice so don't ask me why but I now get a green solid light on my AE.  I can connect other devices wirelessly. I can still access the internet on my iMac.  For whatever reason, using the Airport Utility on the iMac doesn't work in my case and using my ipad to set up the wireless network did the job.

  • Trying to connect iBook to internet via Airport, iMac G5, and cable modem

    The iBook says it's connected to the G5's local Airport network, but Safari says it's not connected to the internet. I must be missing a setup step, but have no idea what.
    This is my first use of Airport other than using the iBook at Wi-Fi spots.

    Do I need an Air Port Base station or a router? After I set up everything on my mac mini, what steps do I need to follow on the iBook to get Internet access?
    The AirPort base station is a router. You are not limited to AirPort base stations as non-Apple 802.11g routers (like those from Belkin, D-Link, or Linksys) will work just as well. Using a router, your network configuration would be something like the following:
    Cable modem > (Ethernet cable) > [WAN] router > (wireless) > wireless computers.
    The set up for both computers, to access the router, would basically be the same.
    To setup AirPort for High-Speed Cable Internet connectivity:
    System Preferences > Network > Show > Network Port Configurations
    - Verify that an AirPort option exists. If it does not, click "New" to create one. (Note: If you are unable to create an AirPort configuration, the AirPort card in your computer either doesn't exist or it is not recognized.)
    - Verify that AirPort is "On" (checked)
    - Verify that AirPort is at the top of the list. If it isn't, you can drag it to the top.
    Systems Preferences > Network > Show > AirPort
    AirPort tab
    - By default, join: Automatic
    TCP/IP tab
    - Configure IPv4: Using DHCP
    - Configure IPv6: Automatically or Off
    Proxies tab
    - Configure Proxies: Manually
